As his footsteps fade, the sound of the buzzer signals the end of the period. I try to recall what Dr. Zhang talked about in class but my mind was as blank as the chalkboards. Dr. Zhang was the type of teacher who talked a lot but seldom wrote anything.
"Not again, John. Not again." The smirking face of Arnold interrupts my field of vision as he approaches me. "You don't have a girlfriend, so what's keeping you up late at night?" We were classmates with Arnold since senior high school, and his taunts haven't changed even now that we're in college.
I ignore him as I pick up my backpack and head out the door. "Maybe he's having a date with his left hand," chimes in the voice of Ashley who is Arnold's current girlfriend. Ashley is dressed in a black gothic tee that is tight enough to outline the shape of her boobs, and a burgundy corduroy mini. She joined the Business Administration program just last year and immediately hit it off with Arnold as they were both into music. I increase my pace as I head for Dr. Zhang's office at the far end of the building, trying to get beyond the range of their voices. On second thought, maybe I should avoid Dr. Zhang's office altogether.
I change direction and follow the corridor to the left instead. Soon I can hear the bouncy strides of someone trying to catch up. I slow down and glance to my right. I stop when I see Jennifer hurriedly moving towards me. Her camel crop sweater fails to dampen the juggling of her breasts as she attempts large strides despite the restriction provided by her white pencil skirt. She was not a business major but chose the Entrepreneurship courses to be her electives. {if GM==1}"It's not what you think it is, John," she says reassuringly as she nears me, her voice showing no sign of panting. My furrowed eyebrows make her grin slightly. "I'm referring to why Dr. Zhang called you into his office," she adds.
"You know why?"
"I don't," she replies truthfully, "but I'm good at making guesses . . . and I think you should not avoid him."
"I'm okay on my own," I say, as I resume my walk along the corridor. Jennifer was that type of person who easily noticed when someone was being insulted or being put down by someone else, and she was quick to soothe whoever she thought was the victim. This was probably why she majored in social work.
"I know what you think when I say those things, but I'm not saying them to make you feel better." Jennifer says as she walks beside me. "I'm even willing to bet that he's going to give you an opportunity you can't refuse!"
