From then on, her brother spent most of his time away from her, as did her parents. Once a year Winter would return with stories and tokens almost in the same manner as her parents did. These moments were special because they always coincided with her parents returning from their own adventures. The family would spend a week or two together before they departed again.
Two years later during one of their reunions her parents talked about their brand new quest, where they planned on entering the forbidden Dragon's Circle. It would be the greatest adventure they had ever been on. The Circle was a place far into the eastern ocean, where ships never came back should they stray into it. After decades of loosing ships, they had been able to pinpoint the dreaded location and made sure that all navel captains had its coordinates on their map, so they could avoid a watery grave.
Kyle had tried to talk the couple out of it, but the seasoned adventures would hear none of his complaints, adamant to do this one last grand adventure. That year she said goodbye to her family and watched them go. Never to see her parents again.
The next year when her brother came to visit, the reunion was somewhat marred, as her parents had yet to return, and were now believed lost forever in that wicked place. When his time was up Winter left to rejoin the military in what would be his last campaign, and she was left alone, seventeen, a year from reaching majority.
Her uncle Kyle had began discussing what she wanted to do when she became an adult. Ash felt the desire to see the world, but Kyle would always try to show her that the tamer life he led was worthwhile, and much safer. Kyle had once been an adventurer much like his brother and in fact the two had been on many adventures before Richard had met his beautiful elven bride Sarr.
The day of her brother's birthday had come and gone, and Ashley was concerned that he wasn't coming. With his parents not their to celebrate maybe it wasn't worth it to him anymore. As the sun rose, bringing dawn to a new day, it was now her birthday, and Ash was finally eighteen, and an adult.

“No! I didn't have some magical revelation while I was sleeping.” Ash giggled. “I think I'm going to wonder around town today, see if I can find any help wanted signs. At least I can earn my keep, till I figure it out.”
Kyle beamed with pride, at the responsible young woman's attitude. He had worked very hard to raise his children right, both for himself, for them, and for his brother and sister in law. He hoped where ever they were, they were proud of the job he had done.
The butcher pointed his silver fork at the lass, who was busy pouring her own cup of milk. “You be careful out there. Now that you're of age, all the horn dogs are going to want a piece of you.” Kyle teased her.

When the young woman had finished breakfast, she tried to help clean up, but was ushered off by her uncle, who said she didn't have to clean on her birthday. Heading outside, she walked down to the main road, leading into the downtown section of Fairbanks. Suddenly she heard a commotion from the western road that led into town.
Glancing to her left she saw a large group of mounted men coming into town. They were dressed like mercenaries or soldiers, and looked to be hardened men of action. At the lead was a huge specimen of a warrior, dressed in large interlocking black plates of armor. His pauldrons had faces of the doomed crying out in despair, shaped into the metal, and gave him a demonic look. A large red cloak covered most of him, and the cowl hung low, leaving his face in shadows. On his back was a huge zweihander with a thick blade, tucked into a black leather sheath.
Ashley and a couple of men stood watching in awe, as the riders drew closer to them. The leader pulled his horse to the side of the road in front of the small group, while his men continued deeper into town. The large imposing figure glanced at the woman, a glint of blue eyes barely visible in the deep shadows of the cowl.
While the other men backed away intimidated by the dark knight, Ashley put her hands on her hips and stared defiantly up at him. “Can I help you?” She asked without the slightest quiver of fear in her voice.
“I heard it was someone's birthday.” A soft voice, contrasting the demonic appearance replied. Lifting his cowl, her brother smiled down at her.

The young woman turned on her heel and waved her hand in a grand gesture, back toward their front door. “There you go.” She giggled.
“What? You're not going to help me? You have any idea how hard this thing is to take off?” Winter feigned a suffered look.
Ashley threw her hands up in mock disgust. “Fine!”
Giggling the two walked into their house, and was greeted by Kyle. After Winter and her uncle hugged, and exchanged pleasantries, he walked up toward his old room with his doting sister following behind.
“So,” Ashley smiled as she started helping the knight divest himself of the buckles and straps, and large chucks of protective metal. “how long are you sticking around brother mine?”
“A week or two, with my career in the military at an end, I figured I would pester you for awhile before moving on.” The large pale man smiled as his chiseled chest was slowly revealed.
She recognized some of the scars from previous times he had come home, but found a few new ones as well. “Yeah, where is your next big adventure?” She mused as she traced the new lines on his beautiful skin.
“Dragon's Circle.” The half-elf smiled down at his sister.
Ashley stared up into his enthralling eyes for what seemed like forever. “Mom and dad?” She choked a little.
“I'm going to go find them, and bring them back.” He nodded softly.
“What if, you don't come back?” She asked swallowing hard.
“I will.” The handsome man smiled pulling her into a hug.
“And if I want to go?” She murmured embracing her brother.
“Kyle wouldn't allow it.” He murmured back.
“I know.” she nodded, knowing full well her protective uncle would try to keep her from making that reckless decision.
“Besides,” Winter smiled pulling back. “it's dangerous for a girl like you to be out there.”
