After about an hour, I decided to check my phone. Surprise, surprise. It was filled with voicemails, texts and even a few emails. I wanted to see if there were any from work and there was only one from my secretary to let me know my wife called several times throughout the day. The rest of the voicemails were from Gail. As soon as I heard her voice, I deleted them. Same for the texts and emails. I shut the phone off again.
A few days later. I received a letter at work from some lawyer's office. I didn't bother to read whatever was in it, I just dropped it off at Helen's office on my lunch break. Any communication to me would go through her. A week later we had a meeting with Gail and her lawyer. Gail wanted half the value of the condo, $1,000.00/month support and, of course half the joint chequing account. I very calmly responded that she wasn't going to get anything other than half the joint chequing account. I then asked Helen to show them why. She opened her laptop and inserted the compilation disc and hit "play". Gail's face lost all colour except for a red spot on each cheekbone. Her lawyer looked totally surprised. I then told them that this was only 20 minutes taken from many hours of similar footage. Helen the spoke up and told them that in return for the disc, Gail would sign an affidavit admitting to adultery (no names necessary), drop the request for the support and sign a quit claim for half the condo. I pointed out that the alternative was for us to present the video evidence in court. With a smug expression, her lawyer said that the video wasn't admissible since none of the parties gave their consent and it was an invasion of privacy. I was ready for that one. I told him that regardless, everyone in that court room including the judge would know it existed and it was quite possible it might even make its way to the internet or appear on social media. That got their full attention. After a hasty whispered conference, they agreed but wanted assurances that was the only copy of the disc. I gave them that since it really was. It was agreed. All the necessary paper work was drawn up, signed witnessed, sealed and delivered. When we got to court, it was all over in less than 10 minutes. On the way out, I handed over the disc. The divorce would be final in 31 days. Outside the court room, both lawyers left for other case appearances. Gail came over to me looking very contrite. She handed me an envelope with my name on it. I asked her what it was and she told me that she felt that she owed me an apology and an explanation. I took it, tore it up and dropped it at her feet. Then I walked away. That should have been the end of it . . .
