‘A shipment of wood from Indonesia...Remember that...late last year?’ Sir asked.
Gina nodded. ‘Yes, I remember that, sir. Why?’
He smiled and said, ‘Well, Gina, the figures just don’t add up, according to Mr Gomez.’
‘Of course they do, sir,’ Gina argued. ‘I checked all the bills of lading myself.’
Sir nodded his head. ‘That’s exactly Mr Gomez’s point, Gina. D’you think he’s an idiot, do ya?’
‘No, sir,’ Gina replied, ‘of course I don’t.’
Sir said, ‘Then tell me why you’re lying about this particular shipment?’
‘I’m not lying, sir,’ protested Gina, ‘I’m really not.’
b**st stepped forward and violently slapped Gina’s across her right cheek. She fell sideways on the bed, clutching her throbbing face, yelling ‘Ow!’ and then crying her eyes out. Sir smiled and said, ‘Look, Gina, you’ve got one more chance. We know the truth. We got it out of your partner in crime; that little shit, Carlos Hernandez. Gina glanced up, the horror rising. ‘What’s happened to Carlos, sir?’ she asked; her reddened face frozen in terror.

Gina went rigid with shock. She thought her veins would explode with the adrenalin pumping through them. Her mind flashed back to the year before and the planning of the seemingly full-proof invoice-fraud was hatched, where a lot more cargo than Mr Gomez knew about was imported using a false manifest. She recalled the amazing lengths Carlos and she went to, in order to cover up the financial deficit using clever computer trickery. She truly thought they’d gotten away with it. So did Carlos. Now she knew better and was almost out of her mind with fear.
She decided to confess. ‘Okay, I admit it, sir,’ Gina said. ‘Yeah, alright, we pulled a con on Mr Gomez. What does he want from us?’
Sir gave Gina a broad smile. ‘Mr Gomez knows you spent the money you ripped-off from him on that neat holiday condo you bought in San Diego,’ he told her.
