Rajesh kissed Riya goodbye, then picked up his bag and headed out the door. ‘Bye mom, see you Shreyas, see you at school on Monday.’
‘Bye honey, take care.’
Riya was thoughtful as she watched him make his way to the gate and out into the busy street. His shoulders seemed to sag a little, and his head was low, his eyes downcast. She knew him well enough to know that something was troubling him.
He hadn’t quite seemed himself this weekend, but they had been busy and she hadn’t the time to think about it too much, or to ask him was was troubling him. She went inside with the intention of asking Shreyas if he knew what was up but he had disappeared into his bedroom.
She thought she would ask him later, and became involved in the home routines, but the thought of Rajesh was nagging her. Varun had gone away for work again, and she knew she would have time with Shreyas later. After dinner Shreyas was up in his room doing some study and Riya was able to relax.
Rajesh’s mood was gnawing away at her, and she went over and over what could be worrying him. In the end she concluded it must be trouble with some girl, and her heart went out for him. His would be easily broken she thought, underneath his bravado he was soft and kind.
He was driven by his hormones and his rampant sexual drive at the moment, but she knew him like he was her own son. All during that week Riya had her thoughts of Rajesh on her mind. Shreyas seemed happy enough, studies kept him busy at night, cricket training. He stopped off to watch the district team practise one evening.
He would hang around the nets, hoping to be asked to bowl down a few overs to the batsmen. She asked him a couple of times during the week how Rajesh was, but he seemed non-committal, just saying ‘ok’. On Friday afternoon as usual the two boys arrived, excited for the end of the weekend together and with Riya, and looking forward to their computer games and cricket.
After dinner, Shreyas went upstairs with his phone to download a new game, and Riya had the chance to talk with Rajesh. She called him into the kitchen and threw a tea towel towards him. ‘Can you dry some dishes please honey.’
‘Sure mom,’ he replied and got to work.
‘So, how has the week been, Rajesh?’
‘Yep, it’s been ok thanks, mom.’
‘How are your studies? You have exams soon?’
‘Yes soon, its always stressful,’ he said with a sigh.
She turned to face him. ‘Rajesh, last week when you left here, you seemed down, is everything ok.’
He stopped drying the dishes, turned so he was side on to her and his head dropped.
‘What is it, honey? You can always tell me,, I may even be able to help.’
He leaned on the bench on his forearms and stared at the tea towel in his hands.
‘Rajesh, what’s wrong? Now come and sit down and talk to me.’
She held a chair out for him and he sat, she settled into the chair next to him.
‘Well mom, there is this guy at the orphanage, Rahul is his name. He has been sick now for a few months. Anyway he has been diagnosed with a cancer, its kinda incurable…’.
She put her hand over his and rubbed his wrist with her finger.
‘I’m so sorry honey, I know how hard that must be for you.’
‘Yeah…’
‘Are you close with him, is he a good friend of yours?
‘Yep, he is my other real friend apart from Shreyas, my friend at the orphanage.’
His voice had softened, and his head was dropped. She squeezed his hand.
‘I know you will be a good friend to him Rajesh, you are loyal and reliable. Sometimes in these situations we don’t know what to say or do for a friend. You know sometimes you just need to be there for him.’
He acknowledged her advice with a nod. She stood, taking his hand and standing him, and then she embraced him. She held him close to her, feeling his heartbeat against her chest.
‘You are a good boy my sweet Rajesh, you have a loyal and loving heart. Tell Rahul I am thinking of him and let me know if there’s anything I can do for him.’
He tightened his arms around her, and she held him close.
‘Thanks, mom,’ he whispered. She watched him as he walked to the door and upstairs to find Shreyas.
For the next week she often thought of Rajesh and Rahul. She asked Shreyas how is Rajesh at school and he answered that he seems ok. When the two boys came in the door on Friday Riya looked closely at Rajesh. He seemed to be his usual self, although there were dark rings around his eyes.
It wasn’t until Saturday afternoon that she had the chance to talk with him. She was sitting outside under the shade of the flame tree reading when he approached her.
‘Rajesh honey, sit here and talk with me. How are you this week?’
‘Yep, fine thanks, mom.’
‘How is Rahul?’
‘He has struggled a bit this week, but he is ok.’
‘I’m sure honey you are a good friend to him. Can I ask, what is his condition?’
‘Well I don’t know a lot about it, but he has a terminal disease…they aren’t sure how long he has, it could be two weeks, two months, two years. Apparently, when he goes into terminal decline it will be over soon.’
They sat in silence, then Riya took his hand and squeezed it. He leaned towards her and settled against her as they sat. She put her arm around him and cuddled him to her.
‘Mom… I have to ask you something…’ Rajesh broke the silence eventually.
‘Of course honey, you know you can ask me anything. What is it?’
‘Well…Rahul… he wants you to do something for him.’
‘What is it Rajesh? I will help with anything I can, you know I will do anything for you and Shreyas.’
‘Well, mom… Rahul is…you know…a virgin. He doesn’t want to die a virgin…’
Riya’s body stiffened. ‘Oh?’
Rajesh was struggling to find the words. “Yes, he has never, you know, touched a girl, or had a girl touch him…’
‘Rajesh, I don’t know what you are asking me here.’ Her voice had hardened, and although she still held him in her arm, she had withdrawn from him.
‘Rahul wants to experience to be with a girl, you know, before its too late.’
‘What does this have to do with me?’ she asked coldly.
‘Well mom, you said you can help any way you can.’
‘Rajesh! Not like this, I didn’t mean anything like this when I said I can help. Anyway, why me, what have you told Rahul about me?’
Rajesh was quick to reassure her, ‘Oh no nothing like that, I haven’t told him anything, I promise.’
Riya was reluctant to accept this, but he continued to reassure her.
‘No, really mom, I haven’t told him anything. Before he was sick he and I used to talk about girls a lot. We used to have bets about who would be the first to lose our virginity. He was always boasting about some of the girls at school, how he was going to have sex with them. What he would do with them, you know, all that sort of thing.’
‘And you never mentioned me?’
‘Oh no! Honest! I swear! Not a thing.’
‘Hmmmmm ok, I will believe you, honey.’
She settled back and he relaxed against her again, his hand lazily stroking her calf up to her knee. Riya’s mind was whirling. Her heart went out to Rahul, his position. Of course, a young man facing his eternity would want to experience a woman. No doubt he had been wondering since he was a teenager what it would be like to touch a girl, and now he may never experience that.
Her heart went out to her Rajesh too, for all his bravado and cockiness he was soft-hearted and full of empathy. She didn’t know what to do, what her role was.
‘So what have you said to Rahul, Rajesh?’
‘Well, I kinda made him a promise that I would find a girl for him. We went over all the girls we knew and he told me which ones he would like to be the first with.’
‘That’s quite a promise, honey…’
‘Yes I know, but what else could I do? And now, how do I approach one of the girls at the orphanage, what do I say?’
‘Yes, I understand your predicament.’
He sat up and looked at her. ‘That’s why I have come to you… you’ll understand. You’ll know what to do.’
‘Well I can tell you one thing I won’t do – and that is, have sex with him!’
He sat back and played with the grass with his fingers.
‘I know Riyamom, I understand that. Its just I don’t know where else to go.’
‘Hmmmmmm let me think about it. We’ll talk about it next weekend.’
‘Ok mom, thanks so much, you are the best, I love you so much, mom.’
‘I love you too honey, you are a good person, and a good friend. Now relax, let’s enjoy this time before you have to go.’
Dinner was fun, Rajesh and Shreyas entertaining Riya with imitations of some of the habits of their lecturers and tutors. She was glad to see him back to his usual funny self. As she said good bye to him at the door he hugged her close to him, and she felt his strength in his arms around her, yet she remembered his vulnerability.
‘Take care Rajesh honey, I love you.’
‘Love you too mom.’
The week was taken up with busy tasks including sorting out some documentation for a business proposal she was looking into. The lawyer had given her a list of requirements that she needed to chase up, and that plus Shreyas having a meltdown just about every night over a Mathematics exam coming up kept her busy.
She had thought about what Rajesh asked her, going over and over in her head what she should do. He arrived as usual on Friday evening, and after dinner, he and Shreyas went to the bedroom to play online games. She was able to relax with her youngest, reading to her and after feeding her, putting her to bed.
On Saturday morning they went to the markets to buy some provisions. While Rajesh and Shreyas browsed in a games store, she shopped. It wasn’t until later in the afternoon that Rajesh had some time with her. She was on the sofa reading when he knocked on the door and entered the room.
‘Hey, mom.’
Riya out her tablet aside and smiled at him. ‘Hi, honey, how has the week been?’
‘Yeah, it’s been ok thanks, mom.’
‘Come, sit with me, honey.’
As he sat, Shreyas appeared at the door, and went to the couch and sat on the other side of her. She looked at Rajesh, indicating with raised eyebrows and a subtle movement of her head with Shreyas on the other side of her. Rajesh nodded back to her, and she knew that it was ok to talk in front of both of them.
‘Rajesh honey, I really admire what you are doing for your friend Rahul. I can’t imagine what it would be like to face… well, face an uncertain future. And if it was me, there is no one else I would rather have as a friend than either of you boys. Both of you have huge hearts and you truly care about others.’
She said, ‘Now Shreyas, here is what I am going to do. I will visit Rahul with you both but I can’t promise anything. I want to meet him, and get to know him but I can’t promise anything will happen.’
‘But his time is running out mom,’ Rajesh quietly argued. ‘He needs someone…like you.’
‘I understand that Rajesh, but you have to trust me on this.’ She put her hand over his. ‘If you put yourself in my situation you will understand I can’t commit to anything with your friend.’
He looked down at her hand covering his and played lightly with her fingers. ‘Yes mom, I understand,’ he said quietly. She lifted her arm around his shoulders and pulled him towards her, and he nestled against her.
‘You are both my boys and I love you very much. This will be a difficult time for you, you need each other to be strong, and you need to keep talking to each other.’
She kissed the top of Rajesh’ head as he nestled against her, and turned towards Shreyas. She kissed his forehead, and he turned his face up towards her, then kissed her lips softly. She started to move her head back but he followed her and his lips touched hers again.
She held the kiss, and he pressed his lips harder. She hesitated a minute, then surrendered to his kiss. He felt her relax, then her lips pressed harder against his. His tongue flicked and touched her lips, and she opened her mouth slightly, feeling his tongue searching. Their lips and mouths pressed against each other.
His arm tightened across her middle, then he caressed her hip. She felt him harden against her thigh, and he moved his hip, rubbing against her. His hand moved up and she felt the pressure under her breast.
This was not the time she thought to herself and pulled away from him. Sensing this he put his head against her upper arm and relaxed against her.
‘Now Rajesh and Shreyas, you must promise me one thing.’
Both boys sat up together and looked at her.
‘This is really important. I will go and visit Rahul, but he is not to know anything about what you have told me. I don’t want him thinking that anything is going to happen in case it doesn’t. All he knows is that you are bringing me to see him. You understand?’
‘Yes mom,’ Shreyas replied.
She turned to Rajesh. ‘Rajesh?’
‘Yes, of course, mom.’
The three of them sat in relaxed silence for some minutes, then Shreyas broke the silence.
‘Mom, have you ever heard that some cancers can be cured by breast milk? Did you know that?’
‘Oh? Where did you hear that?’
‘We read it on the internet.’
‘We?’
She looked across at Rajesh. ‘Is that right?’
‘Yeah,’ he replied. ‘We found it mom, real evidence that drinking breast milk can help cure cancer.’
‘Really?’ Riya’s tone was skeptical. ‘You shouldn’t believe everything you read on the internet.’
‘No mom, its true, there is a whole lot of research to back it up, research from America and Europe too. Isn’t that true Rajesh.’
Rajesh nodded earnestly. ‘Yes, mom its true, and we think it may help Rahul.’
‘Well… I don’t know about that honey, it might just be one of those internet conspiracies. There are plenty of non-truths going around.’
Rajesh looked at her, his eyes burning with an intensity that drew her in. ‘But Mom, what if its true? What if it could help Rahul, save him, give him a chance…?’
She pulled him to her and wrapped him her embrace.
‘Yes honey, that’s true, its easy to disbelieve, sometimes we just have to have hope. And I admire your desire to help Rahul.’ She looked from one to the other. ‘But remember, I’m making no promises. I’ll visit Rahul, bring him some treats we’ll make in the kitchen here, but there are no promises.’
