Fictionmania: The case of the missing story.

This story is dedicated to fearless FM volunteer Alyssa
who helped me with this story.
Author?s note- This all started because of a missing FM
story. I had a wild idea and I am using some of the FM
volunteers and Authors for this story.

The names have been left the same to protect the
innocent.
My Name is Joe Friday. I carry a badge.
I was working out of Robbery/Burglary division when I
was summoned to Fictionmania. There seems to have
been a story that was posted to the website and it had
mysteriously disappeared. I arrived at the premises where
all the FM volunteers and authors worked. I soon
discovered there were other detectives summoned to work
on the case. Seeing most of the volunteers and authors
being interviewed, I walked to a young very attractive
woman seated in a chair by one of the desks at the back
of the room.
? What is your name?? Sgt. Friday inquired.
? Elrod? replied the strange woman.
? OK Elrod,? Sgt. Friday said, thinking Elrod was a
strange name for a woman. ? What can you tell me about
this missing story.?
? Not much. I just arrived here,? Elrod explained. ?A
story named ?Go Figure? was posted to the website on
March 26th and then mysteriously disappeared the next
day. I don?t really know very much. I was spending a
day at the local water park.?
?Can anyone confirm your alibi?? Sgt. Friday asked,
while he was writing notes.
? The park owner, her granddaughter Anya, oh, many
people. It?s a great park.? Elrod explained. ?Sgt. you
ought to visit, it?s a great place to relieve stress.?
? Just the facts ma?am,? Sgt. Friday said, as he
continued to ask questions of Elrod.
In another corner of the room, a detective in a raincoat
was questioning another FM author.
? Now one more question sir,? Lt. Columbo said. ?Now
you say you were visiting your friend?s shop in the mall.?
?Yes lieutenant,? said Bill Hart. ? I was working on
some future story ideas and was visiting a shop named
Spells R Us.?
? I can confirm that lieutenant,? said an old man in a
bathrobe. ? Bill spent much of the day with me talking
about various story ideas he had.?
? Sir, I will need your name,? Lt. Columbo said, as he
started reaching into his pockets, feeling around for a
pencil. ?You know, my captain needs all these details for
my report. One of you wouldn?t happen to have a pencil
you could loan me??
? Sure Lt.,? said the wizard. ?You can have this one.?
The wizard handed a bright colored pencil with the name
Spells R Us on it to Lt.Columbo.
In another part of the room a bald detective with a
lollipop in his mouth was questioning another FM
volunteer.
? Officer, I loaded the story yesterday,? said Annie Mal.
? I just don?t know what happened to it.?
?And what were you doing today?? Kojak asked Annie
Mal.
?Working on editing some stories,? Annie Mal replied.
? I also had this story I am working on.?
?From what I see, you have great difficulty finishing
stories,? Kojak replied.
"I have so many wonderful story ideas," Annie Mal tried
to explain, "it's just difficult to finish them sometimes."
Kojak smiled at Annie Mal. "Don't worry lady, we love
ya baby."
In another part of the room an elderly lady was just
finishing an interview.
"Oh, I try my best to help new FM authors with their
editing and formatting," said Elaine.
"I heard about that," said Miss Marple. "The authors
really appreciate your help."
Elaine said thank you.
"Now if you excuse me, I must sit down. My arthritis is
flaring up."
Miss Marple walked over to a nearby chair and slowly sat
herself down. There was a table next to her and a chair
on the other side. In the chair was a woman drinking a
cup of tea. Miss Marple started to reach for the teapot.
"Let me help you," Mindy said, pouring a cup of tea for
Miss Marple.
She removed a tea bag from the container on the table
carefully avoiding the ones marked Spells R US.
"Why thank you dear," Miss Marple said. "You work
here or write here?"
"No, not anymore," Mindy said.
A Basset hound was running around the room. Miss
Marple saw some dog biscuits on the table and took one
and gave it to the dog. Mindy smiled when she saw the
words Spells R Us on the biscuit.
"I gave up to the other volunteers a few months back. I
still check in once in a while and loan some expertise
when needed."
While Mindy and Miss Marple chatted, another FM
author was being interviewed. The detective had a very
noticeable mustache and spoke with a French or was it a
Belgian accent.
?I was busy today at work,? Deane Christopher explained
to Hercule Poirot. ?I only just arrived a few minutes
ago.?
?Ah, you are the author of those very verbose stories,?
Hercule Poirot observed.
?I consider myself a wordsmith,? Deane Christopher
tried to explain. ?I?m flattered that you noticed.?
?Hercule Poirot uses his little gray cells to observe many
things mon ami,? Hercule Poirot said, going on with the
interview.
In another part of the room, a Chinese gentleman, and
who appeared to be his son, were interviewing a woman.
?Mr. Chan, I am not very good with computers, really,?
explained Danielle J to Charlie Chan. ?I was home all
day, but I could never have done it.?
?My humblest apologies. Yes, but I must ask these
questions,? Charlie Chan said. ?My number one son will
keep notes for me. I noticed you write many stories
involving Orientals. May I inquire why??
?I traveled there many times,? Danielle J explained
?My wife is also Filipino, and I get some ideas that way.?
?Ah, most interesting,? said Charlie Chan, as he
continued his interview.
Perry Mason had just entered the building with his
secretary, Della Street.
? Perry, I think these detectives may be talking to the
wrong person,? Della Street said.
?Leave that to me,? Perry said. ?I may represent whoever
they arrest.?
Men! Della thought to herself. She was so frustrated that
Perry often took credit for solving a crime that was really
her idea. I wish he knew how frustrating that this was to
Della. Men were always stealing ideas from women.
In another part of the room another interview was
progressing.
?I really didn?t do it,? Melissa Virus tried to explain to
Steve McGarrett.
?But, you caused that disturbance last year,? McGarrett
said, ?with your story, The Way of the Manga.?
?It was a prank, a parody,? Melissa stuttered?she was so
nervous, ?I really don?t know why everyone is so upset.?
?Steve, I just got something you need to see,? Danny
Williams said, handing a piece of paper to Steve
McGarrett. McGarrett read the paper carefully then
spoke.
?It seems, Ms. Virus, you were the last one to visit the
website before the story disappeared. Now explain how
that can be a coincidence?? McGarrett said, knowing he
had the culprit right in front of him.
?Uh?.? Melissa tried to say something but didn?t know
what to do.
?Book her, Danno,? McGarrett said, motioning towards
Melissa Virus, stating the various offenses he planned on
charging Melissa Virus with. Danno had Ms. Virus stand
up and had her put her hands behind her back before
handcuffing her.
Case solved, ladies and gentleman,? Steve McGarrett
said to the crowded room. Paula Jutras and Raven
cheered, not that they wanted Ms Virus arrested, but
because they wanted to get back to their story writing.
All the FM authors and volunteers watched as Danny
Williams and Steve McGarrett led Miss Virus to their car
and had her get into the back seat, before they drive off.
?Oh Miss Street,? said Jennifer Adams. ?I got
something for you?you must wear this.? Jennifer
displayed a necklace with a cheap medallion on it.
? Why thank you, Jennifer.? Della gave Jennifer a hug,
being careful not to let the medallion touch either of
them. ?I know exactly how I will use this tonight.?
?Hurry up, Della,? Perry said, ?I want to be Ms. Virus?
attorney. I?m sure she is not the one responsible.?
Della and Perry walked off to their car together. Della
thinking about the medallion of Zulo and how she
planned to show Perry how it worked.
?Come here, Dog,? said Lt. Columbo to her dog, whose
name was Dog. Dog had just been mounted by a French
poodle. ? We really got to get you fixed if you keep this
up.? Paul 1954 noted how much Lt. Columbo resembled
Captain Janeway of Star Trek Voyager.
Elrod had just said goodbye to his favorite detective
Charlie Chan and his son. Before they left, he gave them
a coupon for Bikini Beach. The coupon said Lifetime
passes, Buy one, get one free.
All the FM authors and volunteers went back inside
except the wizard. He was just about ready to leave when
someone spoke up.
?I really know who did it,? said FM volunteer Alyssa to
the wizard. ?You can?t fool me, and I love your sense of
humor.?
?Really Alyssa,? the wizard said with a smile. ?I enjoy
having some fun occasionally. Just had to get even with
Ms. Virus for that story last year. No harm, Ms. Street
will get her off.?
?I?m sure she will,? Alyssa replied.
?Alyssa, it?s been nice talking. Come by Spells R US
someday, I could really help you,? the wizard said,
giving Alyssa a kiss on the cheek. ?Now, I must get back
to my shop. That temp I have working, with Danny on
vacation, might have changed another boy scout troop by
the time I get there.? Alyssa watched the wizard walk off
into the distance and then fade away.
