As I turned the corner the girl ran out into the road. I slammed on the
brakes and hit her a glancing blow. As if in slow motion she span and
then fell to the ground her head hitting a concrete post as she did. I
looked through the side window of the car and saw the prone figure of
the teenager. Slowly I opened the car door and got out and walked to
the girl. I felt for a pulse, there wasn't one. She was dead. From the
same trees that the girl had ran from came two adults, the mother and
father of the girl that lay dead before me. I knew them by sight but
had never spoken to them socially or in my capacity as the local
policeman. The woman's eyes widened as she saw her daughter and
screamed as she ran to her. I stood and move back slightly.
'You've killed her!' screamed the female.
The woman cried as she cradled the girl in her arms. Time seemed to
stop as I watched them. The girl had given me no chance of avoiding her
but even if I had been to blame it would not have mattered. I was the
Law in this part of the country; the local cop and no one messed with
me. The woman's wailing became louder. The man, her husband stood along
side his wife and daughter. His gaze turned to me.
'George, we must do something, we must be able to do something.'
screamed the woman.
I walked to them and knelt down trying to offer sympathy but the
woman's stare could have turned me to stone.
'Maybe Erin can help us Wanda.' said the man.
His wife looked at him and hope seemed to fill her eyes. I looked at
him and then her before speaking.
'That Gypsy woman will not be able to do anything.' I said, my tone
low, trying not to seem heartless.
The woman's stare was filled with hate.
Still kneeling beside her I said, 'I can't allow you to take the girl
to the Gypsy camp, she will have to be taken to the hospital.'
'It's to late for that.' screamed Wanda. 'Erin is our only chance and
you won't stop us.'
I started to get up and as I did I saw just a flash of the thing that
George was holding as it came down and hit me on the back of my head.
My head spun and then darkness.
I came to and I was in darkness. I tried to move but found that my
hands had been cuffed behind me. My ankles were also shackled. I was in
the boot of a car, which was moving fast bumping me around. I shouted
out but the driver either didn't hear me or chose to ignore me.
It was George Simons that had hit me and I could feel the lump on the
back of my head. His daughter was dead and when I got free from this I
was going to make him suffer even more. The car slid to a halt, I
rolled to the back of the boot hitting my face on the carpeted surface.
The doors opened and I heard George and Wanda talking as I imagined
them lifting their daughter from the back seat. I shouted out but again
there was no reply.
I heard the crunch of their feet on a gravel type surface. I knew were
I was. It was the parking area by the Gypsy encampment. I lay there
wriggling, trying to get my hands free from the cuffs. I knew it was a
waste of time as over the years I had used these cuffs, I knew they
were mine, on many a culprit. Not one had got free of them. Only a
couple of weeks ago I had used them on the Ryan twins. They were early
teens but a real handful. Tommy and Bobby Ryan. I had even shackled
their ankles and made them walk through town to disgrace them. They
spat and tried to kick. A night in the cells quietened them down. They
were orphans and had lived with the Gypsies for quite a few years. If
we had lived in a more caring community I am sure that this would not
have occurred but no one was interested. There was another orphan in
the camp, a little girl called Eve. I had scared her shitless when I
threatened to arrest her for begging. I had generally made their lives
a misery just for being in the town that I controlled.
Footsteps on the gravel. The boot opened, it was George.
'Get these cuffs off me now George, you are in real trouble.'
'Shut up Sergeant and get out.'
His tone surprised me but I lifted my legs over the sill of the boot
and he pulled me by my shoulders until I was sitting on it. The
shackles on my feet had about a foot of chain and he told me to walk.
'Kidnapping is a serious offence George, let me go before you make it
worse for yourself.' I said sternly.
His fist hit me in the stomach. I fell to the floor panting for breath.
'Kidnapping is not as serious as killing my daughter, now get up and
walk.'
I got to my knees and he pulled me up, his strength for a fairly small
man surprising me. He pointed towards a caravan and followed as I
hobbled the thirty yards to it. As we reached it he reached past me and
opened the door. With difficulty I lifted my feet and climbs the two
steps and into the mobile home. The first thing that I saw was Amy, the
Simons daughter lying on the settee. She looked so peaceful in death;
the only sign of her injury was a small bruise on her left temple. Erin
sat by her stroking the girl's hair. Tommy and Bobby stood near her.
Wanda was not crying now but her eyes were red and watery.
Erin was an ageless woman. She had been at the Gypsy camp for as long
as I could remember and had always looked old. She looked like your
typical grandmother, grey hair and always seemed to be smiling. But no
smile now, a scowl replacing grinning teeth as she stared at me.
'So Billy Barnes, you have killed this girl.' Erin had said this,
almost spitting it at me.
Wanda started to cry again. I looked at Amy. She was a pretty thing,
about 14 with long blond hair. I looked up again and Erin was still
staring at me.
'Look, it was an accident, Amy ran out in front of me, I didn't have
time to stop.' I pleaded, suddenly feeling so exposed, feeling as if I
were on trial.
'It just surprises me that it hasn't happened before the way that you
speed that police car around, you are so self opinionated, so self-
important nobody else matters.' she responded.
I found it hard to answer her and before I could she spoke again, 'You
have abused your position of power, always using it to get yourself out
of any problem you found yourself in, but that is not going to happen
this time.'
I wanted to smile but didn't, did she really think that anyone was
going to believe her and the Simons against me. I could see through the
window that it was starting to get dark and I didn't want to be here
after nightfall. Not because I was scared of the dark, but tonight I
was meeting with Adele and she had promised to cook me a meal and she
was going to be the dessert. I looked again at Amy and felt like
cursing her. Thinking of Adele had made my cock harden slightly but
Erin's voice changed that.
'Poor Amy is dead, but not gone, there is still time to make the Simons
family complete again.'
The woman was talking about raising the dead. I looked at her trying to
see into her, trying to see the madness that must surely possess her.
'Go and get the Smith child.' she said to Tommy.
The boy did not argue but quietly left the caravan. A silent pause set
over the mobile home as each person looked at each other. That was
except for Wanda who just looked at the body of her daughter.
The door opened and Tommy came in followed by Eve. She was about 10
years old and looked scared. Erin motioned her over. The girl silently
walked to her. She wore a red dress that was definitely a hand me down.
I wondered how many owners it had had since it was new. In fact, all
the times that I had seen her over the last few months that was the
only dress I had seen her in. On her feet as usual was a pair of black
Wellington boots. The gap between the hem of her dress and the boots
showed dirty scuffed knees. She was the fruit of a liaison between a
drifter and one of the local women. The woman had died in childbirth
and the Gypsies had taken her in. Although poorly dressed and not
particularly clean she appeared to be well fed and looked after.
'Is there something wrong with Amy?' the girl said to Erin.
'Nothing that can't be righted.' said the woman confidently.
Eve looked at Wanda and her tear stained face and said, 'Amy is a nice
girl, she is always nice to me, not like the others.'
Wanda sobbed as she heard this and called the girl to her. Eve walked
slowly over to her and the dead girls mother hugged her.
They parted and Wanda said to Erin, 'Do it, do it now, I know that Amy
would have wanted this.'
I listened to the conversation feeling confused and concerned. Erin
called the girl back to her and gave her a pair of scissors.
'Cut a lock of hair from Amy's head and then the same from his head.'
she said looking at me scornfully.
I watched silently as Eve cut a small curl from the side of Amy's head
and past it to the old woman. Hesitating she walked to me and stood in
front of me. I towered over her and she nervously looked around her.
'Kneel down Sergeant.' demanded Wanda.
I shook my head. I wanted out of here, this was getting spooky and I
did not like it. I tried to turn and make a move for the door, but my
shackled feet prevented much movement and I tumbled to the floor. In a
flash Tommy and Bobby leapt onto me, holding me to the floor. I
struggled but my cuffed hands and shackled feet gave them an advantage
that I could not overcome.
Eve walked to me and cut some hair from my head. The boys remained
sitting on me as Eve gave the hair to Erin. They moved so that they
were sitting astride me, their grinning faces showing the joy that they
felt in having the upper hand over me. I started to shout out saying
that when I got out of here they were all going to regret this; I said
that I was going to make their lives a misery. I tried vainly to get up
but the combined weight of the boys held me down.
'Shut that fool up.' said Erin sternly standing up and walking to a
small cupboard.
I still kept shouting that I was going to get them all locked up form
years as she handed Tommy a roll of duct tape. The boy's eyes were
glinting as he unwound some of the tape from the roll.
'No, don't you dare Tommy, I'll make you suffmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...' was the
last thing that came from my mouth as the boy wound the tape around my
head gagging me.
Erin was still standing by me and I was looking up at her, her face
upside down as she started to talk.
'Billy Barnes you are for once in your self righteous life going to do
the right thing, you killed that girl by your carelessness or were you
being just downright callous and now to allow Amy to be reunited with
her parents you must be sacrificed.'
I heard her words and struggled more. I was sweating profusely and my
hands were hurting were they were trapped under me with the weight of
the boy on top of me.
Erin stopped talking and cleared her throat and then continued, 'Amy
has gone but her body still remains and with the help of Eve and
yourself George and Wanda will have their beautiful daughter back.'
I was confused and my confusion grew with her next statement.
'Eve has done no wrong and it is not right for her body to die, that
should be your punishment, but shortly I think that you will wish that
you were dead.'
The woman was talking in riddles and it made no sense to me at all.
'You look confused Sergeant Barnes, but soon it will all become clear
and you will see Amy smiling and happy.' As she finished her statement
she sat down.
I twisted my head so that I could see her. Erin used the scissors to
cut a small curl from Eve's head and she placed this on the table
beside her chair with the other two samples. Amy's and Eve's were fair;
mine was the dark brown, verging on black colour. She picked up the
lighter locks and looked at them and started to intertwine them. She
started to chant something, speaking in a foreign tongue. Eve who was
standing beside her seemed to go into some kind of trance. Erin placed
the now intertwined hair back on the table and picked up the sample of
my hair.
I wanted to scream out but the gag prevented me. I was becoming scared;
the hocus-pocus witchcraft was really getting to me. What was the old
hag doing? Amy was dead and... Amy moved, I could not believe, I had
checked her pulse myself she was dead... but she was moving... sitting
up. Wanda screamed, not a scream of fear but of joy and wrapped her
arms around the girl.
Now the girl was sitting and she spoke, 'Thank you for letting this
happen, I know that I am not the same person as Amy but I will make you
proud of me just like you were of her.'
Wanda wept and so did George and it was he that spoke next, 'You are
now Amy, we are your parents and we will always love you.'
The three of them huddled together tears flowing freely. I stared at
what was happening stunned in disbelief. I looked at Tommy and Bobby
and they to sat open mouthed.
Tommy looked across at Eve and said, 'What's wrong with Eve, she looks
like a statue.'
The girl was standing rigid, eyes closed and not moving.
'Don't you fear for that girl, she is now living inside Amy and
temporarily the dead soul of Amy is in her body.'
I watched as Erin picked up the dark lock of hair. She stared at me and
smiled.
'So Sergeant Barnes have you guessed what is about to happen.'
I had no idea and shook my head, my breathing coming in short gasps
through my nose.
'Well as you see Amy is now fit and well, except that it is little Eve
that now inhabits that body, Wanda and George will never forget the
soul that has departed their daughters body but now she has another
soul they will love her just the same and their daughter will love them
as only a daughter can do.'
She held the hair from my head in her fingers and twisted it before
picking up the other fairer locks and intertwining them. Again she
started to chant and I knew that something was going to happen to me
but I was helpless to do anything about it.
It was if I was drifting, the sound of Erin's voice got louder and
louder and darkness descended over me. I felt strange, felt different,
what was the evil hags curse doing to me. My hands were no longer
behind me but hanging beside me. I could feel that the shackles were no
longer on my feet. I wanted to run and get away, but could still not
move even though the steel cuffs and shackles that had restrained me
were now gone. Erin's voice was loud filling my head. The taste in my
mouth was different; the smells in my nose were not the same. I was
starting to panic when Erin's chanting stopped.
She resumed her normal voice and said, 'Open your eyes Eve.'
My eyes opened and I was looking directly at Erin. She looked huge. I
turned slightly and saw a prone figure with Tommy and Bobby sitting
astride it. It was me lying on the floor still secured with the cuffs
and shackles. But that could not be I was standing here looking down. I
lifted my hand as if that would bring me back to reality. I gasped, it
wasn't my hand and it wasn't my voice that made the gasping sound. I
looked down, my uniform was gone, I was attired in red, I was attired
in a red dress, the same dirty scruffy dress that Eve had been wearing.
On my feet were the black Wellington boots that she had been wearing.
What was happening? Tommy stood up; he was taller than me, no that was
ridiculous he was only about thirteen.
He spoke in a soft tone that said that he was scared. 'I think that the
Sergeant is dead.'
'No he is not dead, just moved into little Eve's body, that is his new
home now.' said Erin. She continued, 'The poor dead soul of Amy is now
at rest in that body.'
I listened to this not wanting to believe what I was hearing but
knowing that it was the truth. I looked around the room. Erin, Wanda,
George, Amy, Tommy, Bobby and the still body that had been me. Eve was
the only one I couldn't see. I knew that was because I was looking
through her eyes. As Eve was now inside Amy, Erin had put me inside the
body of the ten-year-old orphan girl. I looked at her and she saw the
look on my face that said that I now realised what had happened.
'You are now a ten year old girl and not the all important Sergeant,
things will be different for you.' she said.
I dropped to my knees, 'Please, please, please change me back I don't
want to be like this, I promise that I will change and be good, please
don't leave me like this.' Although it was my words that emitted from
my mouth it was the voice of Eve that said them.
Erin tutted, 'To late I'm afraid, your body is dead and George will
arrange for your car to crash and be burnt out and Sergeant Billy
Barnes will be nothing more than ashes inside it, the victim of an
unfortunate accident.'
I sobbed as I heard this. Bobby looked over and started to speak, 'So
now Eve is Amy and the Sergeant is Eve.' He looked quizzical and then
smiled. He looked at Tommy and said, 'I think this is going to be fun.'
I stared at him feeling so small and helpless.
Amy walked over to me. I stared open mouthed as she spoke, 'Look after
my old body Sergeant, you will find life hard, being a little girl and
an orphan at that is not easy, I know that and certain nasty people
like to take advantage, but you will find out all about that soon
enough and you will now be sharing a caravan with Tommy and Bobby.'
She re-joined Wanda and George. They all thanked Erin and left the
caravan. George with help from one of the other men from the Gypsy camp
took my body, carried it out, to place it in the car and destroy it. I
watched helplessly as the shell that had been mine took its last
journey. I looked at Erin and again pleaded with her for mercy. Her
words chilled me.
'You are being given another chance in life, you will never be a male
again so except that fact and it will be easier for you, your new life
begins now and everyone that sees you will know that you are Eve the
little orphan girl.'
I knew that she was not going to relent. I was a twenty eight year old
male that was now in the body of a ten year old girl. I was an adult
but would now have to except being treated as a child. In 6 to 8 years
I would again be treated as an adult, but not as a male. My destiny now
was to be a female. My mind shuddered. I would have to be a lesbian.
Never could I imagine being the plaything for a male in the way that I
had used females in the past. Erin's voice broke me from my daydream.
'It's late and I think that it is beyond your bedtime Eve' said Erin
and then continued to the boys, 'Why don't you take Eve and put her to
bed.' They both smiled and nodded.
Between them, their hands holding my arms I left the caravan and as we
crossed the gravel frontage towards the mobile home that was the home
of Tommy, Bobby and Eve the orphans Tommy gripped my arm tightly
causing me to cry out.
'I know that you are in there Sergeant Barnes and you have spent the
last year fucking us, guess what going to happen to you now... ha ha ha
ha.'
