Hello everyone. This is Bobbie. This is the tale of Nicole's almost
wedding and her brother's love and faith for her. I can never repay
Larry for what he did.
Nicole's wedding was drawing near. I was planning her shower and
Larry was planning Howie's Bachelor party. Nicole had to meet the
local dress maker for her wedding gown. I was happy. I also learned
that Morgan Earp, Billie Claton, and Molly Maquire had escaped
prison and killed four guards. I knew of their claim to get back at
Nicole and I. I warned my ' Aunt ' and ' Uncle ' as well as
Barry. Nicole warned Hedi and her family.
Larry had primed three shotguns. One was modern. The other two
were collector's items from his Grandfather. A double barreled
Greener and an old punt gun. The Greener could take modern ammo,
but the punt gun had to be muzzle loaded. The new model was a
Mossbereg Persuader. He also kept his pets on alert. Larry was not
taking any risks . Ziller and Kong were well mannered. Both Little
Bill and Little Belle could take food from their dishes and not get
bit. Any time Ziller or Kong growled at a person, I did a quick
check on that person. That person usually was a registered sex
offender. Ziller and Kong could sense creeps. One moved next to
Nicole. He only went out to get food and to the movies. He told
Nicole or me when and where he went 100 %. Ziller would follow him
at all times and Ziller would give a warning growl if a child was
nearby. The offender would obey Ziller or Kong.
Scotty was told and he moved in with me. He brought Georgia with
him. I was not worried about Scotty. But I knew he needed a heads
up.
Both Nicole and I were looking for spots that the escaped prisoners
could hide without being spotted. Their homes and family were under
surveillance.
This kept us busy. Nicole was missing appointments with her dress
maker. She never called her on that and I wondered why. I later
found out that Larry deliberately shed thirty five pounds and two
inches off his frame. He made sure of his measurements as Laurie
matched Nicole. He acted as a human dress dummy. In truth, he made
Nicole look even better in the gown than she did. He even posed for
the newspaper wedding shot. He would go to the shop in a simple
sweater and skirt combo. He also bought a wig that matched her hair
style and color. I will admit when I saw him look like Nicole, he
looked her twin sister. It also hurt him. I will tell that later.
Nicole had talked to her mom. She told me that Howie was more
distant lately. I had told her it was pre wedding jitters. I was
wrong, but that no longer matters. Larry had made the last fitting
for Nicole's gown. Nicole was still the dark about it until I
dropped her off at the dress shop after work. Nicole put on her
gown for the first time in two months. It fit perfectly. We were
both amazed. I said "Wow, you did it with only one fitting Nicole.
You're lucky."
Jane the shop's owner said "Nicole was in here earlier today. I see
her friends were able to help her."
I motioned for Nicole to be silent. I asked Jane "What happened?"
Jane said "Oh not much. Nicole slipped and three of her friends
gave her a ride home. That walking must help her keep her shape."
I asked Jane "Does your store have a video system?"
Jane said "Yes it does. Do you need to see it?"
I said "Yes we do. It may show us something."
Nicole and I looked at the tape and saw Larry as Laurie and as
Nicole's twin. Well that explained the gown fitting so well. We
also saw Larry stumble and three figures appear to help Larry. They
were Billie, Molly and Morgan. Larry, in his bid to help Nicole,
was now in trouble. They grabbed Larry thinking he was Nicole.
We went to Larry's place. We told Helga. I also called our boss and
informed him. Every off duty cop in the area went into a search for
Larry. Helga just went to her laundry and came back with a sweater.
It was the one Larry like to sing in as Laurie. Helga said in a
very tired voice "Ziller. Kong. Come. "
They both went to her. She showed them Larry's sweater. She made
them sniff it. Then she said "Find Larry. "
Helga grabbed the punt gun as she followed Ziller and Kong out the
door. Billie, Molly and Morgan just bought a ton of trouble. I
radioed into the office and told them what was up. I also told them
we would call when we had some info.
Some of the following was gotten off a DVD Recorder that Billie had
running. She meant to sell it on the porn market. Meanwhile back
at an old warehouse, Larry was on his belly and bound to a
table. Molly was saying "Just shoot her and be done with it."
Morgan said "Come on Billie. Lets waste her and go after that dyke
Winston."
Billie had other thoughts. Billie said "Nikkie. if you show us a
good time we let you live. It is a pity we could have not have
gotten you in uniform. It would have boosted sales by twenty
percent. "Somehow Larry sensed that was a lie about being allowed
to live. He was determined to prevent harm to Nicole and me.
All the while Larry was bound, he was being raped and sodomized by
Billie, Molly and Morgan. They all had strap on dildos.
Billie was saying "See how much she likes this. Let's try two at a
time."
Larry felt his organs breaking down. He knew he was meant to die.
He deliberately being silent. Somehow he knew by being silent he
could keep Nicole or me alive. He also started to relax all his
muscles. Billie said "Wow. This girl really must be into it. Let's
do her all at once. She really wants it. Hey maybe we should get
her brother and make them do each other. Both in her uniforms."
Larry felt more of his insides break down as his vision dimmed. He
also heard Ziller baying. Nicole told me that Ziller was a mutt.
Ziller had Doberman pinscher, Bull Mastiff, Bull Dog and Coon
Hound. Ziller had found Larry. Nicole and I were about fifty yards
behind Helga. I radioed in the address. Ziller hit the door and
rushed in. Helga was right behind. Nicole and I were there 10
seconds later. Helga opened up with the punt gun and decapitated
Morgan. Ziller and Kong both hit Molly. Ziller bit Molly in the
jugular vein and the neckbone. Kong hit the carotid artery. The
punt gun had only one shot, but Helga hit Billie in the chest with
all her weight and Helga kept hitting Billie. Helga had broke
Billie's ribs and punctured Billie's lungs and heart. Helga had
beat Billie to death. I heard on the radio that back up was on the
way and I said "Send Medical and Evidence teams."
We entered. Nicole went to Larry and cut him free, leaving the
bindings tied to the table and the knots that were on Larry intact.
Nicole was saying "Hang in there Larry. I know what you did and
why. Just hang in there for me. Bobbie and Helga is here. Hang in
there for all of us. We are with you ."Nicole was trying to keep
Larry fighting to live. I could hear the banshee wail of the
ambulances.
Then there was a shot. Nicole took a hit in the head from a 9mm
auto. She died immediately.
Larry died right after. I remember his last words. He said "Mom
forgive me. I failed you again." Larry died not of his wounds but
of a broken heart. I knew of Larry's promise to his mother. Larry
did not fail his mother. What happened was Rigor Mortis. Molly
still had her hand on her gun. Rigor Mortis had started in her
hands. It was not much, but it was enough to pull the trigger.
Ziller let out an unearthly howl. Ziller was warning the afterlife
of two good warrior souls were coming. I felt the same way and
wanted to tie one on. Nicole was to me a partner and a friend. I
spent almost as much time with her as I did Barry.
Nola, who was both Larry's and Nicole's mother was flying in with
her parents. I met them at the airport. I told them that they were
free to stay with me or Helga. No charges were filed on Helga.
On the day of the funeral, Both Wild Bill and Herman were closed.
Herman provided the food and drink and Wild Bill gave the space.
Scotty at graveside surprised me.
The Salem County Sheriff's Department had laid both Larry and
Nicole out in full uniform. They felt since Larry was willing to
protect two of their own, he was full family. Larry did tell me he
would never wear the uniform unless he earned the right. He would
wear Nicole's clothing, but not the uniform. He said "It is out of
respect to Nicole and your job."
Both Larry and Nicole were in flag draped coffins. Father Patrick
Francis Kelly read the sermon and the rites. After a twenty one gun
salute and taps, Scotty blew his pipes. To Amazing Grace he said
goodbye to both Larry and Nicole. I could sense his grief in his
playing of the pipes.
Later Scotty said to me "Buck up lass. I know how you feel. I liked
Nicole as well. It was a fluke accident and you could not do
anything against it. You had to follow your rules of evidence. It
still sucks, but you were doing the right thing. "
I asked "But what do we do now?"
Scotty said "That is easy. Go on with life and toast the souls of
our friends." Then he handed me a beer.
I said "Grab four more. I am going to Helga and Nicole's and
Larry's folks."
Scotty said "In that case, I am bringing a case. We won't have to
bug the barmaids that way, and we can talk a long time."
I knew Scotty was on the level. I also knew what he wanted on their
marker. It was simple and sweet. "Brother and Sister in life.
Together in death. Rest in peace." After that their birth dates and
the day of their deaths. Larry and Nicole were laid to rest side by
side.
Howie told me why Nicole felt he felt distant. Howie was gay and
could not commit to Nicole fully. He also felt he was giving her
marriage under false pretense. He wanted a woman to be his wife as
a beard. Howie could not do that to Nicole. To this date, there no
NFL player who is an open gay player.
My Aunt Belle had told me why Larry did not cry out. She said
"According to St. Joan, Larry felt by being silent he could atone
for all the abuse he gave Nicole. He was trading his life for both
you and Nicole. If he hung on long enough, he would have been sent
here and helped. He did do what he set out to do, to protect his
sister and you. He made a complete change. St. Joan would have let
him live to enjoy life."
Now the hard part was to come, telling Nola and dealing with a new
partner. The new partner is easy. Dealing with Nola Ricotta
Sargento will be hard for me. Like Larry, I feel that I failed her,
despite what I know. I saw both her children die on my watch. I
also know that Helga is with child. Her child will want for nothing
and has a scholarship set up for it.
