The Summer Dress - What really happened
Chapter 1
Synopsis: When I was about ten, I remember playing with one of the
neighbours kids Joanne in her upstairs bedroom. Her mother came into the
room and asked her what she wanted to do with a summery type dress she
took out of the wardrobe. Joanne said to bin it and I asked her why she
wanted to when it was a nice dress. She said if I liked it, then I could
have, to try it on. I told her not to be silly, but then wanted to try it
on but didn't know why. This is the TRUE story of what happened.
All the characters names remain unchanged except the main character of me
(Stephen). I really don't like to use my birth name anymore.
Chapter 1
Joanne and I we're playing in her room. There wasn't much to do outside,
and it wasn't the nicest of days to do anything anyway. We we're busy
using her toy typewriter putting together a comic we'd been working on
for a week or so. I was typing and she was dictating.
We we're really bored and the comic wasn't going anywhere, when Joanne's
mother came in the room and went to the wardrobe and picked out a yellow
summer dress of Joanne's.
"Joanne, what do you want to do with this dress?"
Joanne looked up from the book she was reading and said, "Oh, just bin
it."
Joanne's mother put the dress back in the wardrobe and left the room.
"Why do you want to throw that dress out?" I enquired, "It's a nice
dress."
"If you like it then, you can have it, try it on if you like."
This didn't so much shock as surprise me and I spoke before really
thinking.
"Don't be silly, dresses are for girls," I said, but as I did, I suddenly
felt like I wanted to try the dress. Why? I was a boy, not a girl, but
still, I wanted to try this dress. The thought was playing on my mind all
afternoon, and was making me really uncomfortable, thinking about it.
Should I say something or not? What would Joanne think of me if I said I
wanted to try it? I decided it would be best if I said nothing more about
it.
I went home for tea, still thinking about that dress and how I would look
wearing it. What did this mean about me? I'd seen men on TV wearing
women's clothing, but they we're comedians (some of my favourite ones at
that) playing a part to make people laugh, I wasn't wanting to make
people laugh.
Chapter 2 - The next day
I hadn't stopped thinking about what had happened the previous day with
Joanne. What if I had took her up on her offer and tried the dress on?
That was a simple enough question to answer, she would have either
laughed out loud at me then and told everyone I know, or she would have
gotten me all dressed up, built up my confidence telling me how good I
looked, and then tell everyone I know. She was a friend but she could be
a right nasty little cow at the same time.
I tried not to think any more about it, but when you try not thinking
about something, nine times out of ten, that's all you can think about.
Later that day, the family we're going out somewhere. They'd started
leaving me on my own in the house if I didn't want to go with them. The
only thing I had to do was not answer the door to anyone or leave the
house. Since I didn't have the keys to the house, going out wasn't an
option. I can't remember where they we're going, but they we're going to
be out for a good few hours. This was as good a chance as any to do
something about what I'd been thinking about almost non-stop since
yesterday.
I waited a good five to ten minutes after the rest of the family had left
the house, and then I went in to my parents' bedroom. I opened the
mirrored doors of their wardrobe's and first saw my dad's clothes and got
this feeling of "ugh no!" My mother's clothes we're next, and I gently
looked through them, not wanting to disturb anything giving away my
secret that I was rifling through their belongings. I came to a summer-
type dress similar to what Joanne had had. It was a different colour,
not the same kind of "girl" dress that Joanne would have, and I picked it
out and laid it in on my parents' bed.
It smelt really nice, like it was perfumed, and as quick as I could, I
got undressed, not worrying about my own clothes. I'd already closed the
curtains so didn't have to worry about anyone peaking in, and I picked up
the dress above my head, put my arms through the openings, and pulled the
dress down over myself. The feelings I experienced just felt so right.
It felt as though these clothes, this dress, had been made personally for
me and I was in heaven. I pranced about the place like I thought girls
did or would, and although it had only been five or ten minutes since I'd
put the dress on, it felt like if I didn't hurry up and put everything
back to where it should be, I'd end up being caught.
So, as carefully as I'd selected and put the dress on, I took if off and
put it back in it's place, making sure that everything looked exactly as
it did before I disturbed it all, got dressed and went downstairs to
watch TV, with the slow feeling of guilt welling over me. Why I felt
guilt I don't know, but it would be something that would make me swear
not to do it again.
