The gang and I prepare for the upcoming holidays. Peace. Belle.
This tale starts after Veteran's Day.
It was Saturday. Wild Bill had a meeting planned for us in the Irish
before he opened for the day. Three of the waitresses came in to set up
the bar. Bill had us in the Mile High Club Section. Bobbie, Barry, Jo,
Larry, Hedi, and Herman were there. Nicole was on patrol. Helga was on a
call. Hilda was baby sitting and Henery was coaching the Salem High
Wizards at the State Semi Finals. I knew Herman would fill in his wife
Hilda. Larry said he would tell Nicole, Helga, and Henery at dinner that
night.
For the sake of some of the newer readers, Larry Sargento is the Head
BrewMiester at the local brewery and is married to Helga Hessman. Helga is
the local horse doctor. That is right a Veterinaran or D. V. M..
Nicole is Larry's sister who has Jo Friday as a housemate. Hedi Hessman is
a lawyer along Henery Hessman are brother and sister to Helga. Herman and
Hilda are the parents of the Hessman children.
Herman Hessman runs the Bavarian Steak house and is co-owner of the local
brewery. Hilda is his wife.
Nicole was married to Howard Hessman. She is his widow. (See the story One
Strange Week). Larry tells me she still cries out for Howard at nights
when Jo is not there and some times when Jo is there.
Wild Bill owns the Ye Old Irish Inn and is the other co- owner of the
brewery. He is also my boss at the Wellman Clinic.
Bobbie is my niece and Barry is her Husband.
Bill said, "Good morning everyone. The purpose of this meeting is simple.
We are going to help the local holiday food drive. The drop off stations
have been set up. We donot have a storage or an assembly area yet."
Larry said, "We could use the new number seven warehouse. It is not heated
so the it will be the air tempture that it is at the time. It also has the
big keg chillers inside so frozen foods willnot thaw out. Add a few tables
and you could pack the food in beer cases and set up the delivery drivers
from there. It also answers a question from the Head Union Steward Vance
DeGeneres."
Bill said, "Now what can Old Sluggo be thinking of?"
Larry said, "It is about the use of venison. The D. E. C. is promoting the
guys who go for the trophys to give the meat to the area food banks."
Bill said, "Good thinking. I will make sure that is allowed. I hate to
kill any animal unless you will eat it or have to put one out of its
misery."
Herman said, "The local supermarkets are willing give out turkeys this
year. So between any venison and the the turkeys, the main course is taken
care of. We need the people to add the trimmings."
Jo asked, "The trimmings?"
Larry said, "You know the potatoes, stuffing, dressings, and other side
dishes. I know through Helga, that the Farm Wives are willing to do a big
bake day to make pies for this. I can attest to the skill of their pies.
There is three that if I taught on how to make beer and ale, I would out
of a job or you could set up another brewery in the state."
I said, "Larry, you can't be serious on that?"
Larry smiled and said, "Sorry Belle. But cooking and brewing do have some
things in common. They both have a process of having ingedrents in the
proper amount and added at the right time and the right way. Too much of
one thing or too little of another and your product comes out bad. Even if
you add the right amounts, if not added right, you can mess up the end
product. Even time if it is not used right can screw it up."
Herman said, "I will keep that in mind if Swanson cannot bring his skills
up to par. Both his wife and sister work the line and made some excellent
strudle and soups for October Fest. His sister can make some good
sauerkraut from scratch and it goes well with the bratwurst."
Larry said, "Would you fire him?"
Bill said, "No we won't. It will be easier and faster to have him work the
line and to get either his wife or sister to try their hand at brewing."
Larry said, "Good. I hate to see anyone lose a job, even more so at this
time of the year. A person might do something drastic if meant to keep his
family fed."
Bill said, "That is why we are doing this drive and why I don't fire
anyone unless I have to. I rather see a person learn from their errors
than lose everything for the most part."
Larry asked" What are your exceptions?"
Bill said with a look I knew too well" You don't want to know Larry. You
don't want to know."
I knew Bill's exceptions. If someone crossed that line, Bill would do
anything to stop that person. And woe to be that person. Bill when fired
up could be only stopped by killing him or killing the person who crossed
that line.
Well time went on. It was shortly after Thanksgiving. The first round of
the food drive was passed out. We had the points set up the Christmas
drive. It was at the December 10th drive time when trouble broke out.
Larry, Ziller, Bill, Nicole, and I were working a collection point. Nicole
was dressed like an elf, and I was dressed as Mrs. Clause. A ten year old
girlcame running by yelling, "Mommy Daddy. Mommy Daddy."
Ziller was growling up a strom. I knew what that meant. But with both
Bobbie and Jo at work, I would have a hard time confirmering my thoughts.
Nicole had the pull,but her costume did not incude room for a cell phone
or her off duty weapon. It only allowed room for her badge and ID. Larry,
Bill, and Ziller went into action.
Ziller, as I knew from Nicole, had thing for childeren. Ziller would
protect all childeren from harm no matter what. A child could pull
Ziller's ears, tail, and steal his food and not be harmed by Ziller. Let a
someone try to harm that child, and Ziller would go protect the child from
harm at all cost. Ziller wold abandon Larry to protect the child. Ziller
would die to protect Larry.
Well on to other things. Both Larry and Bill did see a pedophile try to
harm a child. I knew Larry from his past would do everything for that
child. Bill's actions did surprise me. He knocked the creep for a loop.
All Bill did was to slap with the back of his hand to the pedophile across
the face. Bill has hands the size of a dinner plate. Yet he can be
gentle as the morning mist on a meadow. Bill was ready to pound the
creep. The creep tried to run, but Ziller pinned him. Nicole said, "Good
dog. Now you creep. Who are you ? I am Sgt. Sargento. Salem Sheriff's
Department."
The creep could not say a word. He was knocked out. He also had his jaw
broken.
Larry asked" Uh, Nicole. Do you want me to call Bobbie or Jo for this ?"
Nicole said, "Thanks Larry. Just pass me your cell phone. The child was
not harmed and Belle is here. The perp will need to see a doctor. You got
one of your collectors items?"
Larry said, "Yes I do Nicole, but why?"
Nicole said, "If he moves without permisson, shoot his dick off."
I was holding the child. He was mumbling. None of what he said made sense.
I knew the staff at the Wellman Clinic could help him.
Just then the E. M. T.s showed up along with both Bobbie and Jo. I guessed
that Nicole called her office and the info was passed through channels.
Along with Jo, came Officers Donna Pringle and Sam Addams.
Very shortly, the child's mother showed up. She was Sarah Phil. She said,
"I just let Megan take her brother David to the bathroom. She just told me
of this creep, who wanted to.. to.. to."
Nicole broke in and said, "I understand Maam. We got the jerk. I am Sgt.
Nicole Sargento of the Salem County Sheriff's Department. Right now the
Salem Police have the jerk and will I. D. him in a very short period of
time. Ms. Belle Starr from the Wellman clinic is holding your son. She
will make sure he is alright and arrange any help for him if you want it."
Just then David said, "Mommy. Hagird and Harry got the BadMan. Fluffy
helped."
Sarah asked" What are you talking about David ?"
David said, "Hagird, Harry, and Fluffy got the BadMan."
As David spoke, he pointed to Bill, Larry, and Ziller.
Sarah said, "David must be tramatized. He thinks he is seeing people out
that J. K. Rowling series."
I had to shoot both Bill and Larry a look that said Be quiet and don't let
it go to your heads.
The EMT's had just revied the creep. Jo said, "Hey now. I know this
turkey. He is James Brown. His parents liked R & B and Soul music. They
named him after one of their favorite artists. Unlike the artist, this guy
can't carry a tune or sing a note. He is also the first one in this area
to be listed in a new special sex offender level. Donna take this pervert
in and book him."
I said, "Thanks Jo. Please bring David to the Wellman on Monday. I can
have the staff there help your children. Please tell your husband."
Sarah said, "I cannot do that."
I could see she was holding back the tears when she said that. I did ask,
"What happened ? I can understand if you donot want to talk about it."
Sarah said, "I lost my husband. He died overseas as a soldier. It happened
late this summer. It still hurts."
Nicole said, "My husband died about the same time. If you need to talk or
have a friend, please call me. Here is my card."
I said, "I know this will be hard for you Sarah. But please be at the
Wellman on Monday. There is somethere there who can help your children
better than I can."
Sarah said, "I will. And thank you again."
After that she left. I could see concern in Larry's eyes. I said, "Larry
are you worried that David might think you are Harry Potter for real if
you help him ? Are you worried that you might further harm David by doing
this ?"
Lary said, "Yes Belle. Iam. I did take the Hippocratic Oath. I want
children to enjoy fantasy, but be able set it aside for real life. Fantasy
is fun, but reality is better despite its set backs."
Bill asked" What set backs are there ?"
Larry said, "The fact is in fantasy, I can aways have the right answer. I
can always win. Well, you can get the picture. In real life, I can be
wrong and lose. I have learned more by my losses than my wins at times. I
like the fact that I can't always get the biggest fish or fastest car. I
did get the best gal. But that is what makes life more fun."
Bill said, "There are some who might agree to most of what you said. They
also might say they got the best gal."
Nicole said, "It works both ways Larry. I don't know if I can find anyone
to take the place of Howie. Jo is fun for now, but I feel we both will
need someone on a full time level. As much as I like Jo, she is not it."
I said, "Let us hold this discussion for later. Larry can you help David
by being Laurie on Monday. Dr. Twain is on vaction. Do you want any other
doctor or take one at random ?"
Larry said, "Let's try Dr. Bryant. She is new to the staff and she will
only see me as Laurie. I know you and another doctor will monitor the
whole session, so it will give her a test ride so to speak."
Well Monday came and Nicole dropped Larry as Laurie off. Both were
dressed the same way with one small exception. While both had on Salem
Stae Sweat shirts, jeans, and running shoes, Larry had on the Salem Stae
Hockey shirt and Nicole had the Salem State Football shirt. The only
difference was how the Salem State Skunk was dressed. Nicole was on the
way to her job on the Sheriff's Department. I said, "Nicole, please wait
up. The Salem Police have not seen David yet. Can you stay and record any
legal information ?"
Nicole said, "I think so Belle. I will just check in with Bobbie or Andy
first."
As Nicole went to the desk to use the phone, I said to Larry" Dr.Bryant is
on a case at the Salem General Hospital. However Nurse Heather Ortiz is
here and can be used."
Larry said, "No problem. The sooner David gets help, the better he can
be."
I said, "I see you have Kong with you today, how will Jose take to Kong
being here ?"
Larry said, "Jose will like it. If I had Ziller here, the two cats would
tag team Ziller. It does not effect Ziller. He would usally tree Jose and
put his paw on Kong. Then after that, they all will go and allow any of
the kids or other clients to pet them." (Pet Therapy is used at many
places. It does work.)
Just then we came to the room where Larry was going to talk with David.
Nicole was with us and said, "Andy said 'Take the time you need. I talked
with Major Domo of the Salem P.D. Just send them copies of your notes and
reports of this case.'"
About this time, I could hear some of the guards getting yelled at by
Heather. She screamed" Get rid of that mangy beast or I will have you all
fired."
The first one, who was Jim Bowie said to his one of partners Bill Travis"
Hey take old Davy Crocket here for a shave, a hair cut, and bowl of soup."
Davy came back with, "You need a flea bath Jim as well as a new flea
collar." (None of them needed anything. They all looked top notch. Jose
was kept well groomed and flea dipped monthly.)
Heather was now fully mad. She yelled, "Iam not talking about you three
simpletons. However all of you could use the things you just said. Iam
talking about that filthy cat."
Nicole stepped in and said, "I do not know who you are, but I do know two
things. One you all of these three guards an apology. You also owe one to
that cat. That is Jose Curevo and is on staff here and not some alleycat.
Laurie, please take both Jose and Kong with you."
Heather then said, "I willnot work with that Freak. Also, I will not
follow what you say. You don't work here and you don't know anyone here
you ElStupido."
Nicole who had Sicilian Blood in her said, "Listen you little no account
FlavinMooshBagger. Laurie is on staff here. She works mostly with the
small children. She has more understanding of them then you do now or ever
will. Jim is a former cop from the Salem P.D.. He left as a Captian. Dave
was an M. P. in the Marines for more years than you lived. Bill was a
Sergeant from the Salem Sheriff's Department. So that alone makes you
wrong on all counts you dumb bitch." (Nicole did say a few words in
Sicilian. I have enough problems with English. I am not about to try any
other language. I do know the terms meant cheap whore who will do it with
donkeys.)
Before this broke into an old Fashion Cat-Fight, I said, "Nicole take Jim
and Bill to the lunchroom and grab some coffee. Dave stay here for about a
half hour. Heather you be in my office in five minutes." (I would have
bet on Nicole and gave any takers 9 to 2 odds.)
I stopped by the nearest phone. I called my office. I said, "Josie this
Belle. Please get me Heather Ortiz's file and some disciplinary forms.
Also a large glass of water, some asprin, and some Alka Seltzer."
Before I went to my office, Larry said, "I am glad Nicole is not in her
uniform right now Belle. I don't want to see her get in trouble. I will
thank her tonight. I know she will love some good home made Lassanga from
scratch. I can do everything except the sauce from scratch on short
notice. You want to come along as well ? I will let you get first shots at
the leftovers."
I said, "Sounds good. Please plan for Bill, Barry, and Bobbie as well. I
must make an off the record call to Bobbie. While I agree with Nicole,
Heather might try to hurt Nicole or the Wellman."
Larry said, "Sure thing Belle. You do look like you just went ten rounds
with Mike Tyson and must go another ten with George Forman. You want some
Hot Chocolate ?"
I thought about how Larry likes to do Hot Chocolate. Then I said, "Later.
Maybe after dinner in your living room with some Jazz or R & B in front of
the fireplace."
Larry said, "That sounds good Belle. I see that Dr. Giesel and Nurse
Chapel are here. I will see if either one of them could fill in."
I said, "That is good thinking Larry. Now please take care of David."
Larry said, "Alright Belle."
I went to my office. Josie said, "I have yet to see Heather Ortiz Belle.
What will you do ?"
I said, "She is off the clock until further review. She must understand
that this a medical place. Our Clients can need care at any time. All our
people must be willing to give that care at anytime and with anyone."
I then went to my desk. I called Jim Brigders. Jim is the Head of Security
at the Wellman Clinic. I said, "Say Jim. Can you do a favor for me and
find Heather Ortiz and escort her to my office please."
Jim came back with, "She is in my office right now writing out a staement
against three of my guards."
I said, "Tell her to finish her staement in my office. If you must, drag
her but here." Jim asked" Do you know something I donot Ms. Starr?"
I said, "Yes I do. She was abussive to at least five Wellman employees
and one law enforcement person. I will ask Human Resorce to suspend her
until she sees the light or quits or finds another job."
Jim said, "Yes Maam. Is there anything else?"
I said, "Yes there is. After I am done with her in here, escort her out
the door and lock out her access codes."
Jim said, "Okey Dokey Maam."
Two minutes later, Heather was in my office and swearing at Jim in
Spanish. Jim was holding back all his laughter. After he dropped her off,
he said something in Korean" Here is Miss Ortiz Belle. She is actting
real nuts" Jim also used a term that meant a cheap whore in Korean.
Heather not knowing the trap that Jim set up said, "What did you call me
you child a diseased whore who does pigs?"
Jim was laughing as he said, "I did not know you spoke fluent Korean."
Heather said, "I do not know that language."
Then Jim dropped the sack on her. He asked" Then how do you know what call
me in English on what I said word for word in Korean ?"
Heather went pale. I said, "Heather you are now suspended until further
notice. If the Board of Directors wants to keep you here, then you will
work at any time and with anyone you are told to work with. If that person
screws up, you will tell your supervisor. If you stay with your current
ways after this, I sign your removal notice myself. Do you read me ?"
Heather had no choice but to say" Yes Maam."
I also said, "The next time I say be in my office by a given time, the
breeze of the door should be cooling me off as I enter or you will be
removed. Is that clear ?"
Heather said, "Yes Maam."
After that, Jim escorted Heather out. Nicole came in and said, "Sorry
Belle for losing my cool today. I just could not let that person hurt my
brother or my fellow LawDogs with out notice. I called Bobbie and filled
her in. I know my conduct wasnot right."
I said, "Don't worry Nicole. I do not blame you. Just keep a handle on
your temper. I have did a lot worse in a fit of anger."
Larry still as Laurie came in then. He said, "Belle, David is on his way.
Dr. Giesel was there, and I helped David. Donna Pringle came in for some
paper work and talked with David with Jose there. She also had a Teddy
Bear for David. She used the Bear for David to show her the abuse his
attacker did to him. Bobbie did call me and said to take Nicole home and
have write out a full report and bring it in on Tuesday. She also told me
she wants Nicole to keep me out of trouble."
Both Nicole and I said, "Thanks Larry." (I knew Larry really meant for him
to keep Nicole out of trouble.)
Nicole said, "Uh Larry, what were you planning for supper tonight? I know
it is your turn to cook, but I want to do it. Cooking helps me relax."
Larry thought for a moment and the said, "I was planning on some good home
made Lassanga from scratch. OK I will have to buy the wine and sauce."
Nicole said with glee, "Not the sauce. I have some homemade sauce. I
combined both Mom's and GrandMom's recipes. Together they are great
combo."
Larry was all smiles. He said, "Alright Nikkie. I will do the salad and
you can make the garlic bread."
I said, "Larry ,you have a great dinner planned. Do you mind if I bring a
Black Forrest Chocolate and Cherry Cheese Cake for dessert ?"
Larry said, "Please do. I could not think of a better way to top off the
night."
Sure enough that is what we did. Larry changed back to Larry. Bobbie
borrowed Larry's den to talk with Nicole for a short time. After dinner
both Jo and Barry helped with the dishes. And for some crazy reason, we
watched Charlie Brown and his Christmas show along with a Claymation
Christmas. After that cuddled and listened to the local Jazz Station
playing seasonal tunes in candle light.
