CINDERELLA: The Real Story

He came to our town, a Prince from afar,
Seeking a bride, her station no bar.
Charming by name, he's giving a ball,
He's invited our nobles, the townsfolk and all.
My step-sisters have gone there, but sadly not me,
Their hopes are quite high, though they're very ugly.
Being a boy, I can't be his bride,
But attending that ball would have got me outside;
Cinder's my name, though I once had another,
Taken away by my step- sisters-and-mother;
For too many years I've served at their whim,
Hoping for change though the chances are slim.
"Cheer up, young Cinder," said a voice suddenly,
"you'll go to the ball if you leave things to me."
A mysterious woman, she'd just now appeared,
Was she a friend, or a foe to be feared?
"Your fairy godmother am I," she then said
"a friend to be sure, not a person to dread."
We stood in the garden I had always tended,
As waving her wand my old life she then ended.
First from a pumpkin a grand coach did spring,
Next rats turned to horses - a wonderful thing!
When mice became footmen in fine livery,
The woman then switched her attention to me.
"You too need to change," she said quite calmly,
As the light from her wand transformed my body.
I shrank rapidly with the spell gathering pace,
Giving me breasts and a prettier face,
My hips became broader, and my hair it grew long
And nothing about this felt in any way wrong.
My fairy godmother waved her wand up and down,
To magically give me a fabulous gown,
"The boy known as Cinder no more shall you be,
But Cinderella, a wondrous beauty.
This spell only lasts until midnight has come
Then everything magical will be undone."
Thus in my coach did I head for the ball,
My arrival well noted by one and by all,
Though knowing me not, my sisters did glare,,
Not guessing their brother was this maiden fair,
What happened next I've thought often of since,
For over he came, so handsome, the Prince.
"May I have this dance?" he asked with a smile,
So we took to the floor and we danced for a while,
The Prince he was smitten, that I could tell,
And all evening long he was under my spell,
Until much too soon, midnight did chime,
And I suddenly knew I was all out of time.
Fleeing the party as my changing got started,
>From one of my shoes I was clumsily parted.
In my coach all alone as I fled from the scene,
I sadly reflected on what almost had been.
The Prince had come from afar, seeking a bride,
And I was the one who should be at his side.
Feeling thus for him I thought to be wrong,
But could not deny the attraction was strong,
Cinderella he'd seek out with my lost shoe,
But if he found me what was I to do?
There was only one way to be his bride,
By freeing the woman I was now inside.
When to our house with the shoe he soon came,
My heart knew that this was no longer a game.
Ignoring my sisters, he came straight to me,
Dropping before me onto bended knee.
Taking my foot, he slid on the glass shoe,
And there was nothing my sisters could do.
As I transformed, they watched from the door,
Seeing me become Cinderella once more.
My fairy godmother chose then to appear,
Causing my sisters surprise and great fear.
"I set things in train, and now it is done,"
"You'll be just the wife I would wish for my son"
I listened in awe of the tale she did tell,
Of a daughter transformed by a powerful spell.
A girl become boy, now seeking a wife,
Someone just like me to share his new life.
"I'll be that woman," I laughed out with pride,
"His lover and wife, his best-friend and bride!"
He'd come to our town, a Prince so lonely,
Seeking a bride, and now I was she;
Thus it came to pass that we were soon wed,
The perfect couple, as most everyone said,
And thus ends my story as it had to be
With us living ever after so happily.

This one has been sitting on my hard-drive semi-complete
for over a year, so this afternoon I decided it was past
time I finished it. As usual, my approach to scansion is
more about reading aloud and amending the lines until
their rhythm sounds 'right' to me rather than counting
syllables and the like.
