TRANS-ATLANTIC: PART 2 - MONTE CARLO The next morning the ship entered the harbor at Monte Carlo. At 7am Veronika, Max, Mark, Anne, Jean and Jack met for breakfast. The first tender for Monte Carlo would leave at 8 am and everyone wanted to be ready. "Jean, have you been to Monte Carlo?" Veronika asked. "No, but I've heard about it," replied Jean. "Playground of the rich and famous." "That's true, and so beautiful too. My uncle will spend the day in the Casino, so I am free to shop. Come with me and I will show you all the best boutiques," enticed Veronika. Jean hesitated. She wanted to hang out with the gorgeous Veronika, but didn't know if she was ready for a girls' shopping trip. "Go ahead, Jean," Anne prodded her. "You'll have fun." Jean swallowed and tried to be brave. It was time to jump into this girl thing with both feet. She smiled at Veronika, "Okay, Veronika. That sounds great." Mark handed his daughter a credit card. "Try not to melt it. I hear these Monaco boutiques are pricey." "What about you, Jack?" Veronika asked. "Care to join us? Photos of Jean in Monte Carlo would be good for your article, no?" Jack certainly wouldn't turn down a chance to spend time with the beautiful Veronika. He happily agreed to her suggestion. "Yes, I'd like to tag along and get some shots. That is if Jean doesn't mind." Jean blushed. "I don't mind." Actually the thought made her queasy but she didn't want to chicken out in front of Veronika and Jack. The threesome got on the first tender and spent a little while walking around taking general photos of Monaco. The setting between mountain and the sea was wonderful. Jack posed Jean for photos on the streets. The girl was stiff and too self-conscious, but improved after Veronika gave her some tips and told a few funny stories from her modeling days. Jean wore gray tweed trousers and a simple white shirt. It wasn't chic, but her remarkably good looks made it work. "Are all your clothes this boring?" Veronika asked Jean. She was appalled the girl's lack of style. Veronika herself wore a leopard print tunic-style mini dress with a wide belt. The billowing bodice narrowed to a form-fitting straight skirt that barely covered her ass. Brown mid-calf boots finished the outfit. Jack wished she would agree to model for him, or do lots of other things for him. Jean frowned and hung her head. "My mom buys all my clothes." Veronika's eyes boggled. "Your mother buys your clothes? What kind of girl are you?" "Not a very good one I guess," fretted Jean. "I don't like to think about clothes and stuff." She fought back tears. She was blowing it. Veronika took Jean's hand. "Come along, darling. It's time to introduce you to the 'Golden Circle.'" She explained that the 'Golden Circle' is a famous exclusive shopping area, framed by avenue Monte Carlo, avenue des Beaux-Arts and allees Lumieres. All the famous luxury boutiques were there. Jack followed along quietly. A little while later they were in Gucci. Veronika convinced Jean to try some things on, but Jean didn't consider actually making a purchase. There were no price tags on anything but Jean knew it all must be sky- high. First Veronika put the redhead in a intarsia tank top and leather pants. Jack snapped a couple pics and subtly adjusted his pants -- his cock was swelling. The girl looked hot and it was effecting him, which made him uneasy. "I want to see you in dresses," commanded Veronika. They tried a silver long-sleeve mini dress with all over embroidered paillettes, skinny pants in stripe visage pattern, and high-heel open toe booties. Again Jack thought it was hot and told Jean, "You really do look good in that Jean. Very sophisticated." The girl beamed but Veronika didn't like the silver top with Jean's red hair. The next outfit was a winner. Black sleeveless shift dress and tall high-heel black leather platform boots. The boots were so high that they disappeared under the short skirt of the dress. Jean's excellent legs encased in leather made Jack's heart race. She was the epitome of sexy European chic. "Look no further, ladies," Jack told them as he snapped a few pictures of Jean posing in the store. "That outfit is the one." "I agree," said Veronika. She told the salesgirl, "We'll take it all -- the dress and the boots." "Veronika!" Jean exclaimed. "I .. I don't think I can afford this." "Don't worry dear, I'm buying." Veronika gave the salesgirl a credit card, then hugged Jean and kissed her on the cheek. "What is money for if you can't buy gifts for your friends? Don't refuse this Jean. I want you to have it." Jean was flustered by the lavish gift and by Veronika's embrace. "Okay, Veronika. Thank you very much. It's very generous." Veronika hugged Jean tighter and kissed her gently on the lips. "Consider this the first step in your education, darling." Jack wiped sweat from his brow. Veronika was too much. "Here you are Ms. Zenova," the sales girl said as she returned Veronika's card. "Please sign here." Jack caught a glimpse of the total on the charge card receipt: $5200. Wow, he thought. That's a hell of a gift. "She'll wear it now," Veronika told the salesgirl. "Please dispose of her other clothes." "Yes Ma'am," the shop girl replied. "Please come back soon." Outside the Gucci store Veronika stopped Jean. "No, Jean. You cannot slouch in a Gucci dress! You are one of the beautiful people now. Stand up straight! Imagine you have a steel plate in the top of your head and there's a powerful magnet in the sky. It pulls you up straight. Straighter! Feel it lengthen you. Good. That's better." Veronika continued, "Now, chin up! We do not look at the dirt on the road." She put a finger under Jean's chin and lifted it. "Up, Jean. Better. Shoulders back and chest out. Be proud to be a woman. Good. Now put one foot in front of the other and take a few steps down the sidewalk. One foot in front of the other! A little swing to the hips. More! Good. Turn and walk back to me." Jack snapped a few more pics as Jean walked back. The shy girl was a quick study. She looked like a confident model or starlet. Veronika put an arm around Jean and kissed her on the edge of the lips. "Good girl." Then she took Jean's hand and led her away. She called back to Jack, "We're going the Casino to check on Max. You can't get in without a suit, so we'll see you back onboard. Dinner at 7?" She didn't wait for Jack to answer. He'd been dismissed and could only watch the two beautiful girls stride away. Veronika and Jean stood behind Max as he played blackjack. They brought him luck and he was up a few hundred dollars. Veronika had an arm around the younger girl's waist and enjoyed the feel of Jean's body where their sides touched. Veronika liked girls and this innocent redhead excited her more than any girl in a long time. Jean saw the men in the Casino watching her and Veronika. She felt like a real woman in her sexy Gucci outfit, and the warmth of Veronika's body made her confident. She didn't blush or hide her eyes from the gaze of the men watching her. That evening, Jack entered the dining room at 7 pm. Mark and Anne were there, but Jean, Veronika and Max were missing. "Where's Jean?" Jack asked Mark. "We thought she was with you," Mark replied. "They went to the Casino to check on Max, but I couldn't get in because of the dress code. Jean must still be with Veronika," he reassured the girl's parents. "How was she today?" Mark asked Jack. He was concerned about Jean and her transition to living as a girl. "Is she okay?" "She seems fine," Jack reported. "I was afraid the photo shoot or the shopping would knock her for a loop, but she took it all in stride. I'm really surprised considering what you told me about her resistance to the change." Anne agreed, "We're surprised too, Jack. I can't begin to tell you how relieved I am. I was so afraid that Jean would continue to resist." "Veronika is probably a big part of the reason why Jean is doing well," Jack explained. "Jean gets along with her, and Veronika is teaching Jean the advantages of being a woman." "How are you getting along with Veronika, Jack?" Mark asked. Jack shrugged. "Well enough I suppose. I'm going to ask her out dancing tonight." "That's the way," Mark encouraged him. "Don't let her break your heart," Anne warned with a frown. "A woman like that probably has more boyfriends than she can count." At 7:30, fashionably late, the missing three table companions made an entrance. Max was in a nice dark suit and on either side of him was a gorgeous girl. Veronika wore a Herve Leger foil-printed sleeveless dress. Shimmering bands of gold circled the dress and hugged all of her curves. Jean still had on her Gucci outfit and her hair was styled in soft red waves that spilled over her shoulders. The difference between the two women was striking -- the shining gold dress and bare legs of Veronika contrasted completely with the black dress and black leather- encased legs of Jean. Jack didn't know who looked better, which was a great compliment to Jean. She had made a huge move up in class. The girls' entrance turned every head in the room. Jean kept her back straight, chin up and shoulders back as Veronika had taught her. One foot fell precisely in front of the other and the sway of her butt was mesmerizing. Jean smiled at all the attention she was getting. After the last few hours she was getting used to it. Veronika said beautiful women drew power from their admirers, and she was right. Jean felt the energy coursing through her. It made her giddy. They arrived at the table and Jack pulled out the chair for Jean while Max did the same for Veronika. "Honey, you look amazing!" Anne said. "So sophisticated!" Jean grinned and the innocent girl look returned to her face for a moment. "Thanks, mom. Veronika bought it for me. It's Gucci." "Gucci!" Anne blurted. "We can't accept ..." Veronika cut her off. "Jean has already gracefully accepted my gift, Anne. I'm proud that she wears it so well." "That she does," Jack interjected to cut off any argument about money. "Let me say, Jean -- you look absolutely stunning in those boots. And the dress isn't half bad either." "Jack!" Anne complained and Jean playfully punched him in the shoulder. "What?" Jack laughed. "I guess I'm a legs-in-leather man. You learn something new every day." Mark and Max chuckled and the women rolled their eyes. Jack spent a lot of time during that meal talking with Jean, and he enjoyed it. Now that she was out of her shell, the girl was smart and witty as well as pretty. After they finished dessert, Jean whispered in Jack's ear, "We dock in Barcelona tomorrow. Want to go boot shopping with me?" And she giggled. She felt the power of being an attractive girl and wanted to have some fun with it. Jack was flustered. She was flirting with him! "Umm, maybe you should ask Veronika," Jack whispered back to her. "She'd be a lot more help than me." "Probably," Jean smirked. "I just thought you might want to go because you like boots so much." "Don't tease your elders, Jean," Jack admonished her. "It's not polite." But he smiled as he said it. He liked Jean's spunk. She was adjusting to life as a girl very quickly. Veronika invited Jean to go up to the Crow's Nest, a lounge at the top of the ship that was the hot spot at night. Jean quickly accepted, but also asked, "You'll come too, won't you Jack?" Jack wouldn't miss it for the world. He'd planned to ask Veronika out dancing anyway, and didn't mind if Jean was there. The three left and the others at their table went their separate ways. The Crow's Nest is a stunning nightclub perched at the top of the ms Rotterdam, decorated in luxurious golds and purples. A wide expanse of windows provides a panoramic view of the rest of the ship and the sea. When the ship is within sight of land, the lights of coastal towns and cities are beautiful at night. There was only a small crowd in the Crow's Nest when Veronika, Jean and Jack arrived. Most people wouldn't arrive until 10pm or later. Jack went to get drinks and Veronika took the opportunity to speak with Jean. "You and Jack talked a lot tonight at dinner," Veronika observed. "Do you like him?" Jean blushed. I don't like guys that way, Jean thought! "He's okay. He's fun to talk to," she explained. "Do you like me?" Veronika asked. She put a hand on Jean's leg. The hand felt burning hot to Jean and the look she saw in Veronika's eyes was smoldering too. It made Jean's mouth go dry but her nipples got hard. "I like you a lot," Jean said, nearly panting with desire. "Good," Veronika said as she brushed Jean's nose with a finger. "We're on the same page." Jack returned with the drinks to find Veronika cozied up to Jean. The former model had the girl's complete attention, maybe because her hand was stroking Jean's leather-wrapped thigh. Damn, Jack thought. It appeared that the woman he'd idolized for so many years was a lesbian. After a little while, Veronika led Jean onto the dance floor. Jack watched them and wondered what would happen if Veronika learned Jean's secret. He hoped that Veronika wouldn't humiliate Jean. He briefly considered saying something to Mark about his daughter and Veronika, but decided that he shouldn't butt into Jean's life. Hours passed and the crowd grew. Jack got a few dances with both Jean and Veronika, but most of the time he was stuck at their table alone. Around midnight he decided to call it a night and left. At the same time that Jack left the Crow's Nest, Veronika and Jean were dancing a slow dance. They'd danced close all night and now their bodies molded together like one. Their movements were slow and sensuous. Veronika worked a knee between Jean's legs and the girl automatically humped it in a gentle rocking motion. Veronika was delighted. Jean followed her every lead like the silly little puppy that she was. Veronika could do great things with a girl as pliant as this. She put a hand behind Jean's head and gently kissed the girl. Jean tried to pull her head back, but only for a moment. Then she relaxed as the sensation of the kiss washed over her. Hesitantly at first, then eagerly she returned the kiss. The song ended and the girls broke their lip lock. They found several man nearby watching them, and now the guys were cheering. "Woo!" "That was hot!" "Let's see more of that lez action!" Jean was mortified. She blushed and hung her head as Veronika hustled her off the dance floor. Neanderthals, Veronika thought. "It's getting late," she softly said to Jean. "Let's get out of here." Jean wanted to escape so she instantly agreed. Veronika held Jean's hand but didn't say anything as she let the girl guide her the way through the ship. This wasn't the time to talk. The girl was upset and confused, but some hugs and kisses in her cabin would cure that. They reached Jean's cabin, an outside stateroom with a balcony. Luckily it was not right next to her parents' cabin. Once inside, Veronika put her arms around Jean and held her close. "Are you alright?" She could feel the girl trembling. "Those guys ..." Jean began then started to cry. Veronika held her tighter and the girl returned the embrace. "Girls kissing is an exciting thing," Veronika explained calmly. "Those men responded to the excitement in a rude way, but their feelings are natural." She put a finger under Jean's chin and stared into her eyes. "I was excited by our kiss. Were you?" Jean gave a little nod yes. She was calming down and the joy of being with Veronika was returning. They kissed for a few minutes and Jean slowly relaxed. She came up for air and confessed, "That was my first kiss. Tonight on the dance floor ... I never kissed anyone before." Veronika's jaw dropped. Her first kiss had been at age 12 and she lost her virginity at 13. This girl was a true innocent! A blank slate for Veronika to write on. "I'm glad I got to you first," Veronika said. "And you are very good for a beginner." Jean giggled and they kissed some more. Veronika decided not to push the virginal girl any further tonight. She broke the kiss and breathed, "Sweet dreams, dear. I'll see you tomorrow." Jean sighed, "Can we go shopping again tomorrow?" Veronika grinned. "Of course, darling. We'll get you more sexy clothes." Jean blushed. "I'd like that," she admitted. She couldn't believe that the beautiful and sexy Veronika liked her! Being a girl was a lot better than she thought it'd be!

Nancy meets Monte

Nancy meets Monte By sub_nancy_cd Looking in the mirror of the ladies washroom at the airport, I fix my hair and make-up, I was glad I decided to wear my hair up in a ponytail, it made me look cuter. I wore my black mini skirt a white blouse with smart lace surrounding my breasts. I wore white pantyhose and my three inch black heels. I turned back and forth in the mirror, thinking to myself, its been 4 years since I met Monte on- line. He knew I was a crossdresser on hormones and...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 77 Haidee

Scarcely had the count's horses cleared the angle of the boulevard, than Albert, turning towards the count, burst into a loud fit of laughter--much too loud in fact not to give the idea of its being rather forced and unnatural. "Well," said he, "I will ask you the same question which Charles IX. put to Catherine de Medicis, after the massacre of Saint Bartholomew, 'How have I played my little part?'" "To what do you allude?" asked Monte Cristo. "To the installation of my rival at...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 105 The Cemetery of PerelaChaise

M. de Boville had indeed met the funeral procession which was taking Valentine to her last home on earth. The weather was dull and stormy, a cold wind shook the few remaining yellow leaves from the boughs of the trees, and scattered them among the crowd which filled the boulevards. M. de Villefort, a true Parisian, considered the cemetery of Pere-la-Chaise alone worthy of receiving the mortal remains of a Parisian family; there alone the corpses belonging to him would be surrounded by worthy...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 41 The Presentation

When Albert found himself alone with Monte Cristo, "My dear count," said he, "allow me to commence my services as cicerone by showing you a specimen of a bachelor's apartment. You, who are accustomed to the palaces of Italy, can amuse yourself by calculating in how many square feet a young man who is not the worst lodged in Paris can live. As we pass from one room to another, I will open the windows to let you breathe." Monte Cristo had already seen the breakfast-room and the salon on...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 82 The Burglary

The day following that on which the conversation we have related took place, the Count of Monte Cristo set out for Auteuil, accompanied by Ali and several attendants, and also taking with him some horses whose qualities he was desirous of ascertaining. He was induced to undertake this journey, of which the day before he had not even thought and which had not occurred to Andrea either, by the arrival of Bertuccio from Normandy with intelligence respecting the house and sloop. The house was...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 92 The Suicide

Meanwhile Monte Cristo had also returned to town with Emmanuel and Maximilian. Their return was cheerful. Emmanuel did not conceal his joy at the peaceful termination of the affair, and was loud in his expressions of delight. Morrel, in a corner of the carriage, allowed his brother-in-law's gayety to expend itself in words, while he felt equal inward joy, which, however, betrayed itself only in his countenance. At the Barriere du Trone they met Bertuccio, who was waiting there, motionless as...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 94 Maximilians Avowal

At the same moment M. de Villefort's voice was heard calling from his study, "What is the matter?" Morrel looked at Noirtier who had recovered his self-command, and with a glance indicated the closet where once before under somewhat similar circumstances, he had taken refuge. He had only time to get his hat and throw himself breathless into the closet when the procureur's footstep was heard in the passage. Villefort sprang into the room, ran to Valentine, and took her in his arms. "A...

Uncle Carlo

When I woke up, I'd received an email from the dean that announced that we would switch to remote learning as of Monday. It went on to say that to comply with social distancing regulations, the dorms would be closed indefinitely. They would leave one building open for those who had nowhere to go or who couldn't fly home. I considered my options. Did I really want to head back home to be isolated with my parents, grandma, and siblings? Not to mention the ten-hour drive to get there. No...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 55 Major Cavalcanti

Both the count and Baptistin had told the truth when they announced to Morcerf the proposed visit of the major, which had served Monte Cristo as a pretext for declining Albert's invitation. Seven o'clock had just struck, and M. Bertuccio, according to the command which had been given him, had two hours before left for Auteuil, when a cab stopped at the door, and after depositing its occupant at the gate, immediately hurried away, as if ashamed of its employment. The visitor was about...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 76 Progress of Cavalcanti the Younger

Meanwhile M. Cavalcanti the elder had returned to his service, not in the army of his majesty the Emperor of Austria, but at the gaming-table of the baths of Lucca, of which he was one of the most assiduous courtiers. He had spent every farthing that had been allowed for his journey as a reward for the majestic and solemn manner in which he had maintained his assumed character of father. M. Andrea at his departure inherited all the papers which proved that he had indeed the honor of being the...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 113 The Past

The count departed with a sad heart from the house in which he had left Mercedes, probably never to behold her again. Since the death of little Edward a great change had taken place in Monte Cristo. Having reached the summit of his vengeance by a long and tortuous path, he saw an abyss of doubt yawning before him. More than this, the conversation which had just taken place between Mercedes and himself had awakened so many recollections in his heart that he felt it necessary to combat with...

Carlo

On the first night of my visit a gang of old friends went out drinking and got ourselves really pissed. At the end of the night, friends dropped Andy and I off at the house and I was to sleep on the big couch in the living room. As we got to his home Andy initially went to his room to get me a pillow and blanket but when he came back, Carlo followed him out to the living room and immediately wanted to play. Andy asked me if I wanted to put Carlo in the garage for the night but I said, “No” and...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 46 Unlimited Credit

About two o'clock the following day a calash, drawn by a pair of magnificent English horses, stopped at the door of Monte Cristo and a person, dressed in a blue coat, with buttons of a similar color, a white waistcoat, over which was displayed a massive gold chain, brown trousers, and a quantity of black hair descending so low over his eyebrows as to leave it doubtful whether it were not artificial so little did its jetty glossiness assimilate with the deep wrinkles stamped on his...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 47 The Dappled Grays

The baron, followed by the count, traversed a long series of apartments, in which the prevailing characteristics were heavy magnificence and the gaudiness of ostentatious wealth, until he reached the boudoir of Madame Danglars--a small octagonal-shaped room, hung with pink satin, covered with white Indian muslin. The chairs were of ancient workmanship and materials; over the doors were painted sketches of shepherds and shepherdesses, after the style and manner of Boucher; and at each side...

"And what sort of persons do you expect to breakfast?" said Beauchamp. "A gentleman, and a diplomatist." "Then we shall have to wait two hours for the gentleman, and three for the diplomatist. I shall come back to dessert; keep me some strawberries, coffee, and cigars. I shall take a cutlet on my way to the Chamber." "Do not do anything of the sort; for were the gentleman a Montmorency, and the diplomatist a Metternich, we will breakfast at eleven; in the meantime, follow Debray's...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 60 The Telegraph

M. and Madame de Villefort found on their return that the Count of Monte Cristo, who had come to visit them in their absence, had been ushered into the drawing-room, and was still awaiting them there. Madame de Villefort, who had not yet sufficiently recovered from her late emotion to allow of her entertaining visitors so immediately, retired to her bedroom, while the procureur, who could better depend upon himself, proceeded at once to the salon. Although M. de Villefort flattered himself...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 61 How a Gardener May Get Rid of the Dormice that Eat His Peaches

Not on the same night, as he had intended, but the next morning, the Count of Monte Cristo went out by the Barrier d'Enfer, taking the road to Orleans. Leaving the village of Linas, without stopping at the telegraph, which flourished its great bony arms as he passed, the count reached the tower of Montlhery, situated, as every one knows, upon the highest point of the plain of that name. At the foot of the hill the count dismounted and began to ascend by a little winding path, about eighteen...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 63 The Dinner

It was evident that one sentiment affected all the guests on entering the dining-room. Each one asked what strange influence had brought them to this house, and yet astonished, even uneasy though they were, they still felt that they would not like to be absent. The recent events, the solitary and eccentric position of the count, his enormous, nay, almost incredible fortune, should have made men cautious, and have altogether prevented ladies visiting a house where there was no one of their own...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 85 The Journey

Monte Cristo uttered a joyful exclamation on seeing the young men together. "Ah, ha!" said he, "I hope all is over, explained and settled." "Yes," said Beauchamp; "the absurd reports have died away, and should they be renewed, I would be the first to oppose them; so let us speak no more of it." "Albert will tell you," replied the count "that I gave him the same advice. Look," added he. "I am finishing the most execrable morning's work." "What is it?" said Albert;...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 96 The Contract

Three days after the scene we have just described, namely towards five o'clock in the afternoon of the day fixed for the signature of the contract between Mademoiselle Eugenie Danglars and Andrea Cavalcanti, --whom the banker persisted in calling prince, --a fresh breeze was stirring the leaves in the little garden in front of the Count of Monte Cristo's house, and the count was preparing to go out. While his horses were impatiently pawing the ground, --held in by the coachman, who had been...

The Count of Monte Cristo entered the adjoining room, which Baptistin had designated as the drawing-room, and found there a young man, of graceful demeanor and elegant appearance, who had arrived in a cab about half an hour previously. He was certainly the tall young man with light hair, red beard, black eyes, and brilliant complexion, whom his master had so particularly...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 89 A Nocturnal Interview

Monte Cristo waited, according to his usual custom, until Duprez had sung his famous "Suivez-moi;" then he rose and went out. Morrel took leave of him at the door, renewing his promise to be with him the next morning at seven o'clock, and to bring Emmanuel. Then he stepped into his coupe, calm and smiling, and was at home in five minutes. No one who knew the count could mistake his expression when, on entering, he said, "Ali, bring me my pistols with the ivory cross." Ali brought the...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 90 The Meeting

After Mercedes had left Monte Cristo, he fell into profound gloom. Around him and within him the flight of thought seemed to have stopped; his energetic mind slumbered, as the body does after extreme fatigue. "What?" said he to himself, while the lamp and the wax lights were nearly burnt out, and the servants were waiting impatiently in the anteroom; "what? this edifice which I have been so long preparing, which I have reared with so much care and toil, is to be crushed by a single touch,...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 31 Italy Sinbad the Sailor

Towards the beginning of the year 1838, two young men belonging to the first society of Paris, the Vicomte Albert de Morcerf and the Baron Franz d'Epinay, were at Florence. They had agreed to see the Carnival at Rome that year, and that Franz, who for the last three or four years had inhabited Italy, should act as cicerone to Albert. As it is no inconsiderable affair to spend the Carnival at Rome, especially when you have no great desire to sleep on the Piazza del Popolo, or the Campo...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 43 The House at Auteuil

Monte Cristo noticed, as they descended the staircase, that Bertuccio signed himself in the Corsican manner; that is, had formed the sign of the cross in the air with his thumb, and as he seated himself in the carriage, muttered a short prayer. Any one but a man of exhaustless thirst for knowledge would have had pity on seeing the steward's extraordinary repugnance for the count's projected drive without the walls; but the Count was too curious to let Bertuccio off from this little journey....

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 48 Ideology

If the Count of Monte Cristo had been for a long time familiar with the ways of Parisian society, he would have appreciated better the significance of the step which M. de Villefort had taken. Standing well at court, whether the king regnant was of the older or younger branch, whether the government was doctrinaire liberal, or conservative; looked upon by all as a man of talent, since those who have never experienced a political check are generally so regarded; hated by many, but warmly...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 54 A Flurry in Stocks

Some days after this meeting, Albert de Morcerf visited the Count of Monte Cristo at his house in the Champs Elysees, which had already assumed that palace-like appearance which the count's princely fortune enabled him to give even to his most temporary residences. He came to renew the thanks of Madame Danglars which had been already conveyed to the count through the medium of a letter, signed "Baronne Danglars, nee Hermine de Servieux." Albert was accompanied by Lucien Debray, who,...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 52 Toxicology

It was really the Count of Monte Cristo who had just arrived at Madame de Villefort's for the purpose of returning the procureur's visit, and at his name, as may be easily imagined, the whole house was in confusion. Madame de Villefort, who was alone in her drawing-room when the count was announced, desired that her son might be brought thither instantly to renew his thanks to the count; and Edward, who heard this great personage talked of for two whole days, made all possible haste to come...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 66 Matrimonial Projects

The day following this scene, at the hour the banker usually chose to pay a visit to Madame Danglars on his way to his office, his coupe did not appear. At this time, that is, about half-past twelve, Madame Danglars ordered her carriage, and went out. Danglars, hidden behind a curtain, watched the departure he had been waiting for. He gave orders that he should be informed as soon as Madame Danglars appeared; but at two o'clock she had not returned. He then called for his horses, drove to...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 68 A Summer Ball

The same day during the interview between Madame Danglars and the procureur, a travelling-carriage entered the Rue du Helder, passed through the gateway of No. 27, and stopped in the yard. In a moment the door was opened, and Madame de Morcerf alighted, leaning on her son's arm. Albert soon left her, ordered his horses, and having arranged his toilet, drove to the Champs Elysees, to the house of Monte Cristo. The count received him with his habitual smile. It was a strange thing that no one...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 88 The Insult

At the banker's door Beauchamp stopped Morcerf. "Listen," said he; "just now I told you it was of M. de Monte Cristo you must demand an explanation." "Yes; and we are going to his house." "Reflect, Morcerf, one moment before you go." "On what shall I reflect?" "On the importance of the step you are taking." "Is it more serious than going to M. Danglars?" "Yes; M. Danglars is a money-lover, and those who love money, you know, think too much of what they risk to be easily...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 104 Danglars Signature

The next morning dawned dull and cloudy. During the night the undertakers had executed their melancholy office, and wrapped the corpse in the winding-sheet, which, whatever may be said about the equality of death, is at least a last proof of the luxury so pleasing in life. This winding-sheet was nothing more than a beautiful piece of cambric, which the young girl had bought a fortnight before. During the evening two men, engaged for the purpose, had carried Noirtier from Valentine's room...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 62 Ghosts

At first sight, the exterior of the house at Auteuil gave no indications of splendor, nothing one would expect from the destined residence of the magnificent Count of Monte Cristo; but this simplicity was according to the will of its master, who positively ordered nothing to be altered outside. The splendor was within. Indeed, almost before the door opened, the scene changed. M. Bertuccio had outdone himself in the taste displayed in furnishing, and in the rapidity with which it was executed....

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 36 The Carnival at Rome

When Franz recovered his senses, he saw Albert drinking a glass of water, of which, to judge from his pallor, he stood in great need; and the count, who was assuming his masquerade costume. He glanced mechanically towards the square--the scene was wholly changed; scaffold, executioners, victims, all had disappeared; only the people remained, full of noise and excitement. The bell of Monte Citorio, which only sounds on the pope's decease and the opening of the Carnival, was ringing a joyous...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 42 Monsieur Bertuccio

Meanwhile the count had arrived at his house; it had taken him six minutes to perform the distance, but these six minutes were sufficient to induce twenty young men who knew the price of the equipage they had been unable to purchase themselves, to put their horses in a gallop in order to see the rich foreigner who could afford to give 20,000 francs apiece for his horses. The house Ali had chosen, and which was to serve as a town residence to Monte Cristo, was situated on the right hand as you...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 50 The Morrel Family

In a very few minutes the count reached No. 7 in the Rue Meslay. The house was of white stone, and in a small court before it were two small beds full of beautiful flowers. In the concierge that opened the gate the count recognized Cocles; but as he had but one eye, and that eye had become somewhat dim in the course of nine years, Cocles did not recognize the count. The carriages that drove up to the door were compelled to turn, to avoid a fountain that played in a basin of rockwork, --an...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 69 The Inquiry

M. de Villefort kept the promise he had made to Madame Danglars, to endeavor to find out how the Count of Monte Cristo had discovered the history of the house at Auteuil. He wrote the same day for the required information to M. de Boville, who, from having been an inspector of prisons, was promoted to a high office in the police; and the latter begged for two days time to ascertain exactly who would be most likely to give him full particulars. At the end of the second day M. de Villefort...

Caderousse continued to call piteously, "Help, reverend sir, help!" "What is the matter?" asked Monte Cristo. "Help," cried Caderousse; "I am murdered!" "We are here;--take courage." "Ah, it's all over! You are come too late--you are come to see me die. What blows, what blood!" He fainted. Ali and his master conveyed the wounded man into a room. Monte Cristo motioned to Ali to undress him, and he then examined his dreadful wounds. "My God!" he exclaimed, "thy vengeance is...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 117 The Fifth of October

It was about six o'clock in the evening; an opal-colored light, through which an autumnal sun shed its golden rays, descended on the blue ocean. The heat of the day had gradually decreased, and a light breeze arose, seeming like the respiration of nature on awakening from the burning siesta of the south. A delicious zephyr played along the coasts of the Mediterranean, and wafted from shore to shore the sweet perfume of plants, mingled with the fresh smell of the sea. A light yacht, chaste...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 49 Haidee

It will be recollected that the new, or rather old, acquaintances of the Count of Monte Cristo, residing in the Rue Meslay, were no other than Maximilian, Julie, and Emmanuel. The very anticipations of delight to be enjoyed in his forthcoming visits--the bright, pure gleam of heavenly happiness it diffused over the almost deadly warfare in which he had voluntarily engaged, illumined his whole countenance with a look of ineffable joy and calmness, as, immediately after Villefort's departure,...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 70 The Ball

It was in the warmest days of July, when in due course of time the Saturday arrived upon which the ball was to take place at M. de Morcerf's. It was ten o'clock at night; the branches of the great trees in the garden of the count's house stood out boldly against the azure canopy of heaven, which was studded with golden stars, but where the last fleeting clouds of a vanishing storm yet lingered. From the apartments on the ground-floor might be heard the sound of music, with the whirl of the...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 71 Bread and Salt

Madame de Morcerf entered an archway of trees with her companion. It led through a grove of lindens to a conservatory. "It was too warm in the room, was it not, count?" she asked. "Yes, madame; and it was an excellent idea of yours to open the doors and the blinds." As he ceased speaking, the count felt the hand of Mercedes tremble. "But you," he said, "with that light dress, and without anything to cover you but that gauze scarf, perhaps you feel cold?" "Do you know where I am...

Margos Own Story 2 Carlo

After a few moments of moaning and heavy breathing he suggested, “Let’s get in the back,” which we did. I don’t know why but I looked at the other cars to see if anyone saw us open the doors and change seats. Carlo quickly took off my top and undid my bra. I was a 34B back then but he didn’t seem to mind my petite boobs. In fact, he started by kissing my ears and then my neck – a kiss on the neck fires everything up in me all the way down to my love organs – and then the tops of my breasts. Oh...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 23 The Island of Monte Cristo

Thus, at length, by one of the unexpected strokes of fortune which sometimes befall those who have for a long time been the victims of an evil destiny, Dantes was about to secure the opportunity he wished for, by simple and natural means, and land on the island without incurring any suspicion. One night more and he would be on his way. The night was one of feverish distraction, and in its progress visions good and evil passed through Dantes' mind. If he closed his eyes, he saw Cardinal...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 25 The Unknown

Day, for which Dantes had so eagerly and impatiently waited with open eyes, again dawned. With the first light Dantes resumed his search. Again he climbed the rocky height he had ascended the previous evening, and strained his view to catch every peculiarity of the landscape; but it wore the same wild, barren aspect when seen by the rays of the morning sun which it had done when surveyed by the fading glimmer of eve. Descending into the grotto, he lifted the stone, filled his pockets with...

Dont Sleep on the Subway Book ThreeChapter 40 Mar 1944 Heavy Fighting at Monte Cassino

“One of the things I cannot grasp, though I have often written about them, trying to get them into some kind of bearable perspective,” Steiner writes, “is the time relation.” Steiner has just quoted descriptions of the brutal deaths of two Jews at the Treblinka extermination camp. “Precisely at the same hour in which Mehring and Langner were being done to death, the overwhelming plurality of human beings, two miles away on the Polish farms, five thousand miles away in New York, were sleeping...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 34 The Colosseum

Franz had so managed his route, that during the ride to the Colosseum they passed not a single ancient ruin, so that no preliminary impression interfered to mitigate the colossal proportions of the gigantic building they came to admire. The road selected was a continuation of the Via Sistina; then by cutting off the right angle of the street in which stands Santa Maria Maggiore and proceeding by the Via Urbana and San Pietro in Vincoli, the travellers would find themselves directly opposite...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 78 We hear From Yanina

If Valentine could have seen the trembling step and agitated countenance of Franz when he quitted the chamber of M. Noirtier, even she would have been constrained to pity him. Villefort had only just given utterance to a few incoherent sentences, and then retired to his study, where he received about two hours afterwards the following letter:-- "After all the disclosures which were made this morning, M. Noirtier de Villefort must see the utter impossibility of any alliance being formed...

As the procureur had told Madame Danglars, Valentine was not yet recovered. Bowed down with fatigue, she was indeed confined to her bed; and it was in her own room, and from the lips of Madame de Villefort, that she heard all the strange events we have related, --we mean the flight of Eugenie and the arrest of Andrea Cavalcanti, or rather Benedetto, together with the accusation of murder pronounced against him. But Valentine was so weak that this recital scarcely produced the same effect it...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 19 The Third Attack

Now that this treasure, which had so long been the object of the abbe's meditations, could insure the future happiness of him whom Faria really loved as a son, it had doubled its value in his eyes, and every day he expatiated on the amount, explaining to Dantes all the good which, with thirteen or fourteen millions of francs, a man could do in these days to his friends; and then Dantes' countenance became gloomy, for the oath of vengeance he had taken recurred to his memory, and he...

The pretext of an opera engagement was so much the more feasible, as there chanced to be on that very night a more than ordinary attraction at the Academie Royale. Levasseur, who had been suffering under severe illness, made his reappearance in the character of Bertrand, and, as usual, the announcement of the most admired production of the favorite composer of the day had attracted a brilliant and fashionable audience. Morcerf, like most other young men of rank and fortune, had his orchestra...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 73 The Promise

It was, indeed, Maximilian Morrel, who had passed a wretched existence since the previous day. With the instinct peculiar to lovers he had anticipated after the return of Madame de Saint-Meran and the death of the marquis, that something would occur at M. de Villefort's in connection with his attachment for Valentine. His presentiments were realized, as we shall see, and his uneasy forebodings had goaded him pale and trembling to the gate under the chestnut-trees. Valentine was ignorant of...

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 91 Mother and Son

The Count of Monte Cristo bowed to the five young men with a melancholy and dignified smile, and got into his carriage with Maximilian and Emmanuel. Albert, Beauchamp, and Chateau-Renaud remained alone. Albert looked at his two friends, not timidly, but in a way that appeared to ask their opinion of what he had just done. "Indeed, my dear friend," said Beauchamp first, who had either the most feeling or the least dissimulation, "allow me to congratulate you; this is a very unhoped-for...

We may easily conceive where Morrel's appointment was. On leaving Monte Cristo he walked slowly towards Villefort's; we say slowly, for Morrel had more than half an hour to spare to go five hundred steps, but he had hastened to take leave of Monte Cristo because he wished to be alone with his thoughts. He knew his time well--the hour when Valentine was giving Noirtier his breakfast, and was sure not to be disturbed in the performance of this pious duty. Noirtier and Valentine had given him...

Valentine was alone; two other clocks, slower than that of Saint-Philippe du Roule, struck the hour of midnight from different directions, and excepting the rumbling of a few carriages all was silent. Then Valentine's attention was engrossed by the clock in her room, which marked the seconds. She began counting them, remarking that they were much slower than the beatings of her heart; and still she doubted, --the inoffensive Valentine could not imagine that any one should desire her death....

The Count of Monte CristoChapter 97 The Departure for Belgium

A few minutes after the scene of confusion produced in the salons of M. Danglars by the unexpected appearance of the brigade of soldiers, and by the disclosure which had followed, the mansion was deserted with as much rapidity as if a case of plague or of cholera morbus had broken out among the guests. In a few minutes, through all the doors, down all the staircases, by every exit, every one hastened to retire, or rather to fly; for it was a situation where the ordinary condolences, --which...
