CHAPTER 8
I woke up Tuesday morning. This time, feeling sick for real. But I don't
think I have a cold or anything like that. I think I just cried so much
and stressed my body out so much the night before that I feel kind of
ill.
I was about to get up out of bed when there was a knock on my door.
"Honey, are you up?" Vanessa asked and she walked into the room. "I
wanted to see how my boy was feeling today!" she said as she made her
way over to his bed with breakfast in hand. "I made you something to
start your day, sonny boy."
"I'm better, mom. Just feel a little out of it," I said trying to not
cry again, since all I can think about was yesterday still.
"So, are you going to go to school today?" she asked.
"Yeah. I think I should be fine," I said, even though I really didn't
want to leave the house.
"That's great son. If you start to feel sick, just see the nurse. She
will call me," Vanessa said as she kissed Charlie's forehead.
She got up and walked to the door to leave his room. "Oh, I got a
schedule change at work for the rest of the week. I will be starting
work at 5 and will be home in the very early morning. So I will leave
you some money for dinners. And I know you were going to the game
tomorrow night," Vanessa said as Charlie's mouth hit the floor.
Oh shit she knows I been pretending to be her. She caught me. But why is
she not yelling? "The game?" was all I could say trying to play dumb.
"Yes, the Phillies game, silly boy. You said last week that your friends
and you were going to the game. Have plans changed?" she asked.
"Oh, um, no. Plans didn't change," I said in relief.
"Well, I know that game is late, so I made arrangements for Neil to
sleep over Ronnie's house so you can go to the game and not worry about
him."
She didn't know about her double going around town. A huge sigh of
relief on my side.
"You're lucky your such a great student and I have faith and trust in
you. Not every parent will let their 16 year old son go to a game on a
school night. I'll see you later. Love ya," she said as she left the
room.
"Love you too mom!" I said as she closed the door.
I don't know if my mind was still playing tricks on me or if it was
reality but mom sure did point out that I was a boy a lot in that
conversation. My ego is in pain thinking about putting on makeup again.
I finished the breakfast mom left for me and was about to get up and get
dressed when there was another knock on the door.
"Charlie, it's Neil, can I come in, are you decent?" Neil asked.
When the hell did he ever ask like that? "Yes, asshole!" I said.
Neil walked in and closed the door behind him. "Hey Charlie," he said.
"What do you fucking want you bastard?" I said still angry.
"I wanted to apologize. I feel so bad. I don't know what came over me
yesterday. I'm so so sorry!! I didn't mean to hurt you like that," Neil
said sounding as if he meant it.
"You don't know how bad I feel! My mind is playing games with me and you
didn't help at all," I said with anger in my voice.
"I know," he said as he walked over to my bed and handed me the camera
from the day before. "Here are the pictures. If you want to call the
date with Mr. Avery off I will understand and I won't say anything to
anyone. I didn't mean to hurt you or let this get out of hand," Neil
said as he walked to the door.
"Thanks Neil," was all I said as he left the room.
I was still completely angry and confused but I was happy that my
brother stepped up and showed he wasn't a complete ass. I can tell
Jackson to go to hell now! I want to tell him no, right? YES! I'm a guy,
dammit! I'm calling the date off!
I finally got up to get dressed for school. I grabbed my boxers. Much
looser than those women's panties. Then grabbed some jeans. I think the
more covered my legs are the more manly I would feel. If you get what I
mean. Then I just grabbed a top out the draw to wear. Funny choice to
pull. It was a black t shirt I had, on it was Spider-Man, Hulk and
Captain America. But this one didn't have any sayings on it... thank god.
My hair was a total mess. I wet it and combed it down and threw wrapped
the back in a rubber band to give it a somewhat manly look. It was still
curly so I had to keep it tied up. Off to school. This day is going to
suck, I can just feel it.
I drove to school and made my way to homeroom. I sat down in my normal
set which was next to my two friends Michael and Heather. Michael was
about 6'1". Brown hair, blue eyes. Was one of the star athletes of the
school. Heather was 5'5". Redhead, green eyes. She worked for the school
paper writing a fashion column.
"Hey dude, where the hell were you yesterday?" Michael asked.
"Yo," I said. "I think I had food poisoning or something. Just didn't
feel good"
"Well you didn't miss anything," heather said.
"Good I guess," I said still feeling out of it. I just can't shake this
feeling.
The whole day was pretty normal. Nothing happen. Just a normal day. Till
the last period, which was gym class. We were in the locker room
changing into our gym clothes. All the guys were getting changed. Shirts
coming off, Jeans coming off. No idea why my mind was thinking the way
it was. But for the first time ever, I started to notice things. Things
I should never notice. I saw Calvin remove his top and all I could
notice was his abs. I looked away as fast as I could since I felt like I
was starting to stare. As I turned my head my eyes landed on Frank. Look
at his arms. They are like three times the size of mine. He looks so
strong. I bet girls love to be wrapped up in those. Ahhh!! I looked away
again and saw Greg standing in his boxer briefs. What the hell is he
packing in his shorts? He had a bulge that looked like another arm was
in his pants. AHHH!!! What the fuck is wrong with me. I hurried and
changed and left to go in the hallway to the water fountain.
As I had my head down, drinking from the fountain, some of my hair came
loose from the rubber band in the back. I removed it and was in the
process of fixing my hair when I got a tap on my shoulder.
"Excuse me. I saw you standing over here and I wanted to come over and
say hi," was what I heard before I even turned.
I stopped trying to fix my hair and turned around. To my surprise, it
was Michael.
"What?" was all I said.
"Oh, hey...um Charlie. Charlie? What the hell happen to your hair?"
Michael said very very confused.
"Oh, my mom got a new thing for her hair and wanted to test it out, and
asked me to help. I didn't mind since I can wear a hat or whatever." I
thought that sounded better then I curled it so it would help me look
more female to impress a guy.
"Oh. Dude! From behind with you hair like that and your height....and even
your legs, I totally thought you were a chick," Michael was able to spit
out after he finally picked up his jaw from dropping.
"Really? Just great. Just want a guy loves to hear," I said.
"You better fix your hair. Others might start making fun of you. Not
much you can do about those sexy legs of yours," Michael said laughing.
"Thanks buttmunch," I said punching him in the arm. And yes, I did
realize right after I did that, that it seems very girl like. Shit.
I fixed my hair and went to gym class. The rest was fine. Not a word
said to me or anything. Since Gym was the last glass of the day and I
had my own car, when the final bell rang I took my time. I figured I
would stay out of the locker room as long as I could so I could avoid
these weird feeling I was having in there.
So instead I helped one of the gym teachers and another student clean up
and gather all the sports gear.
While I was bending over to pick up a basketball, my hair came loose
again.
"Ahhh," the other student said. "I knew it," she said.
She was Kimberly. She was 5'6", black hiar, green eyes. This was the
only class we shared.
"Knew what?" I asked as I picked up my rubber band off the floor.
"Oh nothing," she said.
"No, you knew what?" I asked again.
"Don't be mad. I just didn't know if you were a boy or a girl. But after
I saw you hair out of the band, I could tell that was the hair of a
girl," she said smiling.
"What?" I said surprised. Even though I shouldn't have been.
"Well everytime I have seen you, you dress kind of tomboyish. And you
never wear makeup or heels," she said, but she had no idea. "But I never
really seen you in the locker room now that I think about it."
"Well that's because I'm not a girl," I said as I walked to the locker
room.
Great. So it seems just a little bit of messing with my hair makes me
appear very girl like. Just super. By the time I got into the locker
room only Michael and two other kids where in there.
"Yo dude," Michael said. "You coming to the game tomorrow night with
us?"
"No, I can't. I got a date with a really handsome guy," is the truth,
but what I really said was, "No, I can't. My mom said I can't go."
"That sucks dude!! Maybe you can make the next game," he said, "See you
tomorrow in class."
I finished changing and made my way home. Closed the door. Flopped on
the sofa. And just laid there. I was mistaken by two different people
for a girl today. And not only is that bad news and off putting, but I
had those strange thoughts in the locker room. Before all this happen I
only thought about the Phillies and girls. Now my thoughts are more
Phillies and what girls like. I have never felt anything for guys
before. But ever since I put on my mom's clothes, new thoughts are
coming alive....and it scares me.
Neil walked in the front door about 15 minutes later and found me lying
face down on the sofa.
"You ok dude?" Neil asked.
"What the fuck do you think?" I said back.
"Did you call the date off yet?" Neil asked scared of the answer.
"Not yet. I just got home from school."
"Are you going to call the date off?" was his follow up question.
"Neil, my brain is crying out in pain. Will you just leave me the fuck
alone, I had a long day," I said.
I went to my bedroom and laid down. I was trying to gather all my
thoughts together. All the different things running through my mind.
What to do, what to do? I need to stop putting on mom's clothes. I need
to stop thinking about Jackson. I don't want to go on a date to the
game. But yet I want to try on my mom's clothes again. I want to think
about Jackson. I want to go to the game. AHHHHHH!!!
I thought about it for hours. I saw the mailman pull next door so I went
outside to get the mail. Just to take a break from my brain exploding. I
got to the mail box as the mailman was pulling up. He smiled at me and
started getting all our mail together. He handed it to me. "Thanks," I
said as I turned away to walk back the house.
"Wait miss, this is yours too. I think you would not want to forget this
one," he said as he held out a Victoria's Secret catalog.
"Thanks," I said as I took it and ran back to the house. I'm still
wearing my boy clothes, my hair is still up in the band, yet the mailman
still called me 'miss'.
I went back to my bedroom and made up my mind. I need to see what this
shit it all about. I need to work it all out in my mind. I want to go to
that baseball game. I have decided that I would dress as Vanessa one
last time. I will let Jackson, even though I still find the blackmailing
wrong, I will let him take me to the game. I will see what happens. And
maybe by the end of the night I can put this all behind me. See it all
as just an experiment and continue from there.
As if the world heard me, right after I thought to myself that I would
go, the phone rang. "Hello," I said.
"Hi, is this Vanessa?" the man on the other line asked.
"Who's speaking?" I asked not saying who it was they were talking too.
"This is Jackson. Neil's teacher," he said.
"Hi Jackson. Vanessa speaking," I said.
"Hi. I just wanted to double check and see if we were still on for
tomorrow night?" Jackson asked.
"Jackson I want to tell you that I find this blackmailing extremely
wrong, but for Neil's sake, I'll go," I said not saying it for Neil's
sake but for my own peace of mind.
"Great. Six still good for you?"
"Yes. Six. No sooner," I said.
"Ok, see you then beautiful," Jackson said. "Bye"
"Bye," I said as I huge up the phone.
I just love digging this hole deeper.
