Primary Asset remains unaware of the nature of the experiment (Doctor
Green has expressed misgivings supporting her colleague's concern
regarding the necessity of not reading PA into the project - still

Subject's "cocoon" collapsed today, causing panic among the doctors.
After some confusion, they cut the "cocoon" open and retrieved the
subject. Having seen subject on infection, I would have been hard
pressed to believe that this was the same person. What had been a man
in early middle age was now a healthy ten-year-old girl. Doctors
cleaned her and dressed her in a hospital gown, then lay her on a clean
bed.
Doctor White inserted nasal breathers and oral gastric tubes, "just to
play it safe" with Dr. Green's concordance. Subject is now out of
danger but remains unconscious. Dr Green predicts she will stay that
way for perhaps two more weeks.
Asset codenamed Mr Washington is more compliant to the needs of the
project than his predecessor, although he is less skilled in the
technology. Drs. White and Green continue to question the disinclusion
of Primary Asset from informed status.

Initial examination of subject Rapunzel completed and behavioral
modification therapies begun. As previously noted by Brown, several
anomalous personality artifacts are present, but they are unlikely to
hinder, and may help, the overall program. Rapinzel displays a marked
attachment to Prince Charming, which may need to be mitigated in order
to achieve final product status.
Raponzel appears to currently be in "denial" stage of Kubler-Ross cycle.
I believe that, by intensifying the environmental factors of the
modification program, and openly enforcing behaviors and steroetypical
expectations, I may provide her with a target for entering the second
stage (anger), thereby accelerating the grief process, so the real work

Subject Rapunzel's behavior has begun to show signs of slight
depression. In particular, her time sense is slightly disrupted, and
she occasionally has trouble remembering the day. This is within
parameters, as non-chronic depression also presents with an altered and
unpredictable time sense, and Kubler-Ross allows for a certain
flexibility in progression. Environmental immersion was successful on
the one hand, as artifact personality resisted blatant attempts at
overlaying stereotypical patterns and behaviors, thus allowing an
accelerated resolution of the early grief pattern.
It was less successful in secondary parameters. Unconscious behavior
patterns have not significantly altered to expected levels. Whether
this is due to Rapunzel's resistance to the immersion therapy, extended
difficulty with her remedial physical therapy, or a general failure of
the theory is, at present, unclear.
Rapunzel has expressed a desire to see/contact a childhood friend
(Sharon Randle; designated nonparticipant A-9 in original report).
Official advisement requested, as on-site agents are not in agreement.
Dr. Green and Mrs. Brown believe that her introduction as a non-
participating civilian will be detrimental to the project. Dr. White,
believes, as do I , that her reactions at the time of meeting may be
instrumental in breaking down remaining resistance by the artifact
personality. All have agreed to abide by the decision of superior
authority.
Prince Charming continues to visit Rapunzel on a regular schedule,
although their relationship seems to be forming around a parent-child
dynamic, rather than the dynamic that was considered ideal in the
original project strategy. It may be necessary to arrange some sort of
distraction for Prince Charming until the nanites enter Phase Two of the
overall program.

Subject Rapunzel entered an abbreviated Bargaining phase yesterday after
her visit from subject Sharon Randle (hereafter, Fairy God Mother, or
FGM). Exposure to FGM can be reported as a qualified success. On the
one hand, FGM's presence reinforced the artifact personality, as Green
and Brown surmised. On the other hand, FGM actively promoted certain
parameters of the current stage of the overall mission, including
accelerated acceptance of Rapunzel's new reality and relaxation of
resistance to necessary protocols. Shortly after FGM left the campus,
Rapunzel expressed a desire to discuss her position and her place.
All of her demands were well within expected and easily attainable
limits, but were answered with counter-demands aimed at promoting the
overall success of the project, including acceptance of training and
costuming to better fit her new role.
Prince Charming is expected to contact his handler to arrange creation
and delivery of establishing documentation for Rapunzel. Expected cover
is to be that artifact personality was killed in some heroic way,
leaving heretofore unknown daughter behind. All of artifact's property
and incomes are to be assigned to Rapunzel as well as a government
pension. Prince Charming has offered Rapunzel permanent employment
after Phase 2 completes.
An unexpected benefit of FGM's introduction into the project is that she
has provided Rapunzel with an alternate parental focus, allowing
separation from her focus on Prince Charming. It is understood that the
personality artifact viewed FGM as a sort of unrelated big sister, so
the transition to mother-figure should be an easy one.

As advised, token resistance to naming of FGM as Rapunzel's ad litem
guardian resulted in expected responses. Prince Charming's move to
support FGM reinforced Rapunzel's feelings of gratitude and devotion.
Mr. Adams performed admirably at the "funeral," and Rapunzel's automatic
attempt at self-sacrifice to preserve Prince Charming's life was well
within expected parameters. An interesting side effect: Rapunzel's
nanites appear to be reinforcing her bones and skin with carbon
filaments. Dr. White reports that this is well within their
programming, as the nanites themselves are constructed of carbon
filaments, and they are designed to rapidly reproduce in the early
stages of infection.
Dr. Green is concerned about his ability to acquire data for assessing
Rapunzel's physical state, but he has been assured that the introduced
reinforcement is primarily effective against traumatic injury and should
not interfere with medical testing procedures.
If the reinforcement response is an unexpected product of the nanite
maintenance program, and not simply an anomalous response to the bullet
trauma, then it is likely that the effect will be reproducible in future
projects, and Project SoftShield will be effective beyond our wildest
dreams.

EXCERPTS FROM THE PERSONAL JOURNAL OF DR. SARA REED, MD, PHD
June 1, 2015
I was flown from Gitmo to the P this morning, and read into a new
project entitled "SoftShield." The gist that I can get is that we are
using some insanely high tech and some mildly sketchy theories to
produce a corps of superhuman body guards for at-risk assets. The test
run is set up to create a prototype unit for the owner of the company
that produces most of the technology used in the project.
The test began with the "accidental" release of one of the technologies:
miniature robots designated B.U.G.'s. They disseminated over a broad
stretch of the Texas Gulf Coast with variable results. The exact
numbers were redacted in the report I was shown, but I can guess that
only a few were successful in acquiring a target, and most of the
targets died.
One subject is still alive, however. NSA has codenamed that subject
Rapunzel for reasons that are not clear to me. The subject is in a coma
at present, but is expected to recover. When he awakens, I will be
given the opportunity to test my theories regarding behavioral
modification, or, more accurately in this case, behavioral introduction,
without the need for chemical therapy or physical hardship conditioning.

After repeated requests for intel, I've finally been fully read into the
project. I don't understand all of the technical language, but the
project seems to rest on Prince Charming's status as a single man and
his physical preferences for romance opportunities. A second phase of
the nanites (nanites! I should have read more sci-fi when I was a kid;
they had to explain to me what those even were) programming will
accelerate Rapunzel's aging to a point in early adulthood, then should
hold it there for who the hell knows how long?
On full reassignment, I'm expected to take the lead agent position. My
primary purpose will be to use b-mod to provide Rapunzel with some sort
of personality and ability to operate within the parameters set for the
project. Really just reinforcing...

Well, so much for an easy job reinforcing preprogrammed mental states
created by the nanites' maintenance program. Brown reports that
Rapunzel has a surprising number of personality artifacts remaining from
the initial subject, something that White's abstract says shouldn't
happen. Home office wants me to revise my plans to include finding a
way to erase the artifacts so the original program plan can be
implemented.

What a stupid day. Brown wasn't informed that I was to be lead on the
project from this point on, and Green and White were making stupid
noises about decisions that are well above their pay grade. Then Prince
Charming took me aside and made it clear that I was being forced on him
and his patient, and that he wouldn't appreciate any of the monkey-
business he'd heard I was up to in Gitmo. Actually, I may be able to
use that to my advantage: he is already expressing a proprietary and
protective attitude toward Rapunzel, so a couple of pushes in the right
direction may be all that are needed to place her in the correct
position for maximum utility.
As far as Rapunzel...artifact my ass. She presents the fully actualized
personality of 35 year-old Kyle Hobson. Not only that, but his
reactions to his current situation suggest that he's fully engaged in a
Kubler-Ross cycle, which further supports my belief that he isn't an
"artifact" at all, but that Kyle Hobson is still living inside the body
of that ten-year-old girl.
I don't know what the home office expects me to do, but I sure as hell
can't continue with the original program. His conscious and unconscious
reactions to the initial interview pretty much put the kibosh on any
therapy that would erase the "artifact" and replace it with the
functional program. At least, I'll be able to push him through the
cycle more quickly. He's already focusing on me as a point for the
anger phase, and I have some ideas that elements of the original program
will accelerate that.
The problem is, he's very much a fully actualized personality. Even
ignoring the ethical questions of causing an identity death (and I
don't), so little is known about how personality develops and self-
maintains, that it would be impossible to continue the original program
with any degree of certainty. On the other hand, a fully actualized
adult personality might be helpful in accomplishing most, if not all, of
the secondary goals of the program. I was always concerned with the
dangers of creating a new personality from scratch, especially the
pitfalls of trying to tailor one to the supposed specifications of
another person.
Since it's apparent that the nanites have at least done their job in
creating Rapunzel's initial attraction to Prince Charming and reaction
to his pheromones, then the existing personality, with proper
modification, will have all of the tools already at hand to ensure that
the attraction is mutual, and to maintain the relationship.
If I relate what I know, home office may consider the project to be a
failure without considering the alternate options available, so I think
I'll have to refer to Kyle as the "artifact: in my official
communications. Once the project is proved a success...

We finally had a breakthrough, today. Rapunzel had been requesting a
visit to or from her childhood friend, Sharon Randle (now Fairy
Godmother), and we discussed the pros and cons of the possibility.
Brown and Green believed that her reaction would reinforce the existence
of the "artifact". White believed that her nanite programming would
eventually win out, and that FGM's appearance would have a minimal
effect. I knew that they were both wrong--that Kyle was no more an
artifact than he was an automatic dishwasher, and that White's
programming had failed on almost every level (except for providing
Rapunzel with a doglike loyalty and devotion to Prince Charming).
When the Home Office replied in the affirmative, we arranged the
meeting. It went better than I had hoped. FGM simultaneously
reinforced Kyle's self-actualization and realigned his perspectives
regarding his current situation. During their conversations, she
assisted him in dealing with his loss and in preparing him to move on
within the new paradigm.
After she left, I visited Rapunzel, and was confronted by a new person.
I'm proud to say that she (I can call Kyle--no, Kyrie--"she" now) stood
her ground and negotiated like a pro. Not only did she get what she
wanted (all of her demands were things that were non-issues to the
program), but she accepted very few counter-demands. Whatever else Kyle
Hobson may have been, he was clearly a strategic thinker--or maybe that
was the nanites' influence.

SUCCESS!!! We staged an attempted assassination on Prince Charming,
today, and Rapunzel performed perfectly. Despite being still in phase
one of the body morphology program, she selflessly leaped into harm's
way to protect her primary. Not only that, but she maintained presence
of mind to identify the location of the shot (using her nanites' GPS
functions, no less). There's some weirdness with the nanites producing
reinforced defenses for her body, but overall, this bodes well for the
future of the project.
