Bunk Beds - Chapter 4

"I bombed my interview," I said. "I'm pretty sure he thought I was on
drugs - he mentioned my eyes being bloodshot, and I was really out of it.
I forgot the PS Vita existed at one point and when he asked me about
games coming out next month I couldn't think, so I told him 'Half Life
3.' Which is wrong. That game is never, ever, ever going to be made."
Cindy flipped her hair in an irritated manner. "I'm sorry you didn't get
the job, but does that really call for a group meeting?"
Before Jenna or Beth could scold Cindy, I continued on. "I'm calling a
group meeting because I can't go on like this. I need to sleep. I know
nobody wants to try the bunk-beds out again. I understand; I really don't
want to use them either. But I have to sleep. I can't keep blowing job
interviews like this, and I'm pretty sure this is bad for my health."
"Well," Jenna said thoughtfully, "maybe one of us could sleep on the
couch."
"Those are our rooms, "Karen said. "Why should we have to give up our
beds?"
"Loren was a last minute addition to our apartment," Cindy added.
I sighed. "Those are all good points. If I were in your situation I might
have said them myself. But I have to sleep, okay? People die or go crazy
if they don't get enough sleep. You girls have to work with me here."
"Uh, not to be rude here or anything," Karen said with as much tact as
she could muster. "But is there any chance you could just move back in
with your parents? Four of us could probably absorb the costs of one
person's rent."
I thought about it. I'd told my other roommates that I was 'down on my
luck', but the only person who really knew the whole story was Beth. My
family life really wasn't the best.
"My dad kicked me out because he said a 'real man' would be living on
their own at this age. I think my mom would probably let me move back in,
but as long as dad's around - well, he's stubborn and old fashioned. Even
if he did let me come back he'd make my life hell until I moved out
again."
I think it was obvious from how strained my voice was that this wasn't
really an option. I know my roommates and I are all friends, and they
care about me, but when you threaten to take a person's bed away people
get defensive.
"You know, I think this is something that can be solved with some basic
problem-solving," Jenna said in fairly cheerful tone. "Let me go get a
planner real quick."
Jenna dashed back into her room and then boomeranged back with a big and
heavy planner as well as some lined paper.
"See, what we'll do is we'll each write down our basic weekly schedules.
On days when people either don't have classes or work, or a weekend with
no plans, we'll write that they're 'free' on that day. We can keep this
master planner in a neutral area where we all have quick access to it,
and so we can update it on the fly!"
"Can we really keep track of all of that?" I asked.
"Sure," Jenna said. "Or at least, I can. Organizing information is my
specialty. I'm not sure where it'll take me in the business world yet,
but I know it's my best asset, besides my singing voice."
"If we're looking for a compromise, this is probably the best solution,"
Beth said with a brave but weary look on her face.
"It's going to be complicated as hell," Cindy sighed.
Jenna started handing out blank sheets of paper to all of us. I started
to look for a pencil but then, embarrassingly, realized that I actually
didn't even have a schedule - my schedule was going to be everyone else's
left-over days.
"What about periods?" Karen asked, looking up from her paper.
"What about them?" Cindy asked.
Jenna nodded, deep in thought. "Yes, I suppose we'll have to put our
menstrual cycles on here, in addition to our work life and social events.
I wouldn't want to share that aspect of my life with Loren unless it was
a dire emergency."
"I was thinking of it the other way. I'd love to pass a few off to
somebody else," Karen said.
"I see," Jenna said. "What about you two? Are you willing to share your
bodies during your periods?"
"No," Cindy said, flatly.
"No," Beth said.
"Alright. Only Karen's body is available during that special time," Jenna
said, as she made a note.
"Perhaps," Beth said, "While we're at it, we should make some ground
rules. Like rule one: We promise not to intentionally screw up anyone's
life. Like as a prank, or something."
"Rule two," Jenna said. "Let's not do any body-swaps more complicated
than A to B and B back to A transfers. This stuff might be dangerous and
that gets too complicated."
"Rule three," Cindy said. "If you have sex, use protection."
"Wait," Beth said, getting upset. "I didn't say anyone could have sex in
my body."
"Rule three-a," Cindy continued. "If you're in Beth's body then you live
like a nun."
"We should take a vote one whether or not we can have sex in other
people's bodies," Beth said, hotly.
So we did. Beth and I voted no, while the other three girls voted yes.
"It's just too much of an opportunity to pass up. I think we need a rule
three-b, though: No romance in somebody else's body. Make it clear with
your partner that this is just a casual, one-time thing," Jenna said.
"I highly recommend that everyone jack off when you get Loren's body,"
Cindy said. "It's a lot of fun."
Karen was intrigued. "What does it feel like?"
Cindy thought about it. "Pretty much the same thing, but different. The

And that little aside killed the conversation. Beth hurriedly handed her
paper to Jenna and then ran into her room. The other two took a little
bit longer to get their schedules together, and then it took it Jenna a
couple of hours to compile everything. But by nine o'clock, there it was
- our master schedule. It was a thing of beauty, or perhaps horror,
depending on how you wanted to look at it. Jenna certainly was good at
organizing information.
The book lay open showing the next month's plans; it seems that I would
be sleeping in Karen's room tonight. I have to admit, the thought
intrigued me. Karen worked out regularly and she was so tall - in a lot
of ways, her body was more masculine than mine. When I got in her body I
was going to be taller than most of the girls around me, and even taller
than some guys. And I was going to have muscles! It was a strange notion.
But the important thing was, I could finally get some sleep, and it
looked like I was going to have a normal sleep schedule in the future. So
I went into Karen's room and she was sitting at her desk, texting her
friends on her smartphone.
"I'm going right to bed," I said to her.
"Sure," Karen said. "We're getting up at 5:00 AM tomorrow, though. "
"Are we?" I asked.
"Yup. We're going to hit the gym. Even if we switch bodies, I still need
to keep mine in shape."
"I've never actually been in a gym before. Well, you know. A gym-gym. Not
like a school gym. I don't know how any of the machines work."
"There's a track. So just run a couple miles. I've been meaning to get
ready for a marathon, anyway."
"More than one mile?"
"My body isn't like yours. I run like the wind, baby. You'll see."
"I guess," I said, still doubting myself.
I started to climb up the ladder to the top bunk but she gave me a push.
"Bottom bunk, little sister."
I sighed, and lay down in the bottom bunk. I was going into the freaky
dream world, but I didn't care. It was going to be nice to finally rest.

So there I was. I would say I was standing, but I might have been falling
- there wasn't a floor per se. Just that bright white light coming from
everywhere. Karen was standing in front of me at her full height and I
felt my neck crane up to look at her without my command.

I woke up panting and sweating. I closed my eyes again, and just laid

up at 5 to go to the gym. I nosed around in Karen's closet and found some

I looked down at my breasts. They were certainly bigger than Cindy's or

As I continued getting dressed I mused on how just a few days ago this
sort of thing would have been un-thinkable to me. Everything was still a
little surreal, but I guess at this point I've accepted that I have a

enough money to get out of here.
The only thing I had left to do was to put my hair into braids, like
Karen usually does, but it occurred to me I had no idea how to do that.
My hair had never been long enough and I probably never would have felt
the urge to try something like that, anyway. I figured I could ask either
Karen or Beth after I had breakfast for some help in the hair department.
My thoughts drifted back to the bunk beds, and the conversation Beth and
I had about them not so long ago. If the 'dream-world' that we went into
wasn't really a dream, but rather an alien spaceship or a netherworld,
then there was a possibility the things we did in there were 'real'. It's
entirely possibility that I just lost my virginity to Karen, of all
people. I never would have seen that coming - Karen's body is nice enough
but I've never really desired it in that way.
I looked down at my hands and my long slender fingers, then at my arms. I
had muscles now. That was an interesting development. Between my asthma
and my overall wimpy-ness I'd never really been all that invested in
athletics. But with this body I wouldn't be the laughingstock of a
kickball game or a P.E. room. I started to wonder what this body was
