When Billy dropped me off, part of me was hoping that Mother would be
asleep, but I should have realized there was no way that Mother wasn't
going to be waiting up for me. In the end, I was glad she did, because
I felt like a girl coming home from a date to share the gossip with her
big sister. Was it weird that the relationship of Mother and Son felt
like two sisters? I suppose so, but then, there were lots of other
weird things going on in my life. Like wearing a dress and going out
with a boy, even though I was a boy and I liked girls!
Mother had been keeping herself company with a bottle of wine while she
waited up for me, and by the time I got home, she was a little tipsy.
She sat me down on the couch and said, "OK, tell me everything! Do not
leave a THING Out!" Then, before I could even start talking, she said,
"I see your lipstick is smeared!"
I giggled and said, "Mother, if you want me to tell you about my
evening, you are going to have to be quiet!" She poured herself another
glass (finishing off the bottle) and said, "OK, OK!"
I said, "Well, the movie was really good..."
She put her wine on the cocktail table, grabbed me and started tickling
me. I am very ticklish and Mother knows just where to get me. Of
course I was laughing uncontrollably. She said, "You know that is NOT
what I want to hear about! Now spill, or I will keep tickling you till
you have an accident! And we wouldn't want you to ruin those pretty
panties of yours!"
She stopped long enough for me to catch my breath, and I continued. I
said, "Ok, OK, I was just playing with you. He was a perfect gentleman.
He opened the car door for me and everything. And he did ask me what
movie I wanted to see, which I thought was nice. And I chose The Fault
In Our Stars, which is definitely a chick flick, but he was ok with it.
Anyway, I KNOW what you want to hear. About halfway through the movie,
my hand was on the arm rest. I don't want to encourage you, Mother, but
to be honest, I was admiring my nails. I have to admit that I loved the
way my hands look with my nails painted a pretty pink. So, thank you
for that." And I leaned forward and gave her a kiss on her cheek. I
continued. "I kept looking at them like they were someone else's,
thinking, 'Oh my God, I have the hands of a pretty girl.'"
Mother was smiling. She said, "And to think you were giving me a hard
time about me doing your nails!"
I said, "Well, I wasn't really, I was just nervous, and it's all so new
for me. Anyway, all of a sudden I felt his hand on top of mine, and
then he kind of intertwined his fingers with mine."
Mother said, "Oh, Honey, that's sweet!"
And I said, "I know, Mommy, but really, I have to be honest, I didn't
feel anything. I mean, I wasn't grossed out or anything, but I didn't
feel, well, excited. I mean, I think he is an awesome guy. I really
like him. But..."
Mother said, "OK, go on."
I said, "Well, after the movie, we went to a diner. I think we were
both hoping we wouldn't see anyone we knew, and we didn't. The
conversation felt pretty normal. We talked about just about
everything. His younger sister is in my grade. She's really pretty and
popular. Of course, she's a cheerleader. Wait til she finds out the
nerdy boy in her class went on a date with her big brother the football
star!"
Mother said, "I have a feeling he's not going to be broadcasting that
news any time soon."
I said, "Yes, I guess you're right. But little sisters do have a way of
finding things out."
There was a pause in the conversation, and then Mother said, "What did
you eat?"
I smiled and said, "I know you have been telling me to watch what I eat,
so I had a salad!"
This was true, but Mother knows me too well to know that it was not the
whole truth! "What else," she demanded.
I quietly said, "A chocolate shake."
She shook her head a little and said, "Sandy, you have to try harder
than other girls to keep a cute figure. You know that."
I let her comment about "other girls," as if I were one also, go.
Mother continued. "Did you use the ladies room after you ate?"
I said, "Yes, Mother. I will admit it was a weird experience. I have
never been in one before! And I know what you are waiting for, and yes!
I reapplied my lipstick!!"
I was actually kind of proud of that. Then Mother giggled a little and
said, "Well, if you reapplied your lipstick after you ate, and when you
walked in, it looked like you weren't wearing any..."
I said, "I know this is what you have been waiting for! So, yes,
Mother, I kissed him! On the lips! And yes, it felt totally weird! And
I did it because of what you said to me before I left. And he really
was a nice boy, and a gentleman. But I did not enjoy it at all."
Mother said, "Well, I don't want to get TOO nosy..."
I interrupted with a snort and said, "Oh, please!"
And she continued, "But umm, what kind of kiss was it?"
I said, "Oh, Mother! OK, my lips were closed. I felt him pressing a
little but to be honest, I really couldn't bear the thought of opening
my mouth. I'll say it again, Mother, I am not attracted to boys. If
there was any doubt about that, now there isn't."
Well, that shut her up! Mother was finally speechless. Finally she
said, "OK, Honey. Well, I guess, I thought that you are so feminine,
that you might find yourself attracted to a boy. And I think it was
worth finding out. And I think you did the right thing by giving him a
kiss. But I also think you did the right thing by keeping your mouth
closed. Because you want to reward him for being a gentleman, but you
also don't want to give him the wrong idea." We sat there quietly for a
moment, and then Mother said, "So, what do you think HE thought of the
evening?"
I inhaled and slowly let out my breath. I said, "Oh, Mother, I think I
have one very confused boy on my hands. I mean, here's this boy who has
dated the prettiest girls in the school. Everyone thinks he's this big
stud. And I know you think he thinks of me as a girl, and maybe that's
true, but he KNOWS I'm a boy. Yes, I was wearing a dress, and using the
ladies' room and wearing lipstick, but still." I paused for a moment,
and then continued. "Anyway, Mother, the goodnight kiss was not in the
car. Mr. Perfect Gentleman walked me to the door. So, I was kissing
him standing up. And um, he was kind of pressed up against me. And
umm, well, let's just say, I could feel that he was um, very excited to
be kissing me."
Mother looked a little stunned. I was laughing inside a little,
thinking, "Be careful what you wish for! You wanted to know ALL the
details, right?!"
Mother said, "Oh, my! So, Sandy, I know that you say you are not
attracted to boys, I get that, but how did it feel to know that he was
so attracted to you? I mean, it's a little bit of a separate question,
right? I mean, there's a certain power in that, right?"
I said, "No, Mommy, I didn't feel a sense of power. I felt sad.
Because I like him and I know I can't be what he wants me to be. Which
is, attracted to him. I almost wish I could be."
Mother said, "So, if I am hearing you right, you are saying that, you
would be HAPPY to be attracted to him, but you're just not?"
I said, "Well, not happy in the sense that I want to like boys. But
happy in the sense that I like HIM. You know, people think he's this
macho guy, but he's not. I couldn't help talking about some girlish
things, and he seemed interested. He wanted to know how I felt about
being girlish, did I like wearing lipstick and stuff. He was really
interested to know how I first started wearing girlish things. I told
him about Cousin Chrissie's hand me downs, and how you first pushed me
to start wearing her things. And he told him this was the first time I
ever wore a dress out, and he was kind of amazed at that. I told him he
should be honored! And he was really interested in your and my
relationship. He said, 'Gee, I wish I was as close to my mom as you are
to yours. Even my sister Susie isn't as close to my mom as you are to
yours.' I was pretty surprised at how interested he was in that stuff.
I actually kidded him a little and said, "Well, if you let your mom
dress you in panties and bras, like my mom does to me, maybe you two
would be closer!"
Mother said, "What did he say to that?"
I said, "Well, he turned bright red. It was almost as if I struck a
nerve."
A light bulb seemed to go off over Mother's head. She said, "Honey, is
it possible that part of the reason he likes you is that he has a
girlish side too? And you know, maybe he doesn't have a mom who
encouraged that side of him, like you do, and maybe it's harder for him
because he isn't slim and pretty, but is a football player. It is
possible that part of the reason he is attracted to you is that you are
what he secretly wants to be?"
Now it was my turn to be quiet. I said to her, "Well, I hadn't thought
about it til you said that, but maybe." And then I almost started
crying and said, "Oh, Mommy, that makes me like him even more! Maybe
that poor boy wants to have pretty nails just like me, but he's trapped
in this big football player's body!"
Mother giggled and said, "Well, there's only one way to find out!" Then
she got serious and said. "Look, Honey, obviously you need to be honest
with him. All girls go through this at one time or another. You like a
boy, but are not attracted to him. I know you can let him down gently.
And who knows, maybe you two really can be friends; you can be a way
for him to let his girlish side out."
It was an interesting idea. Who would have thought that Sandy the
feminine, nerdy boy, and Billy, the tough jock, might end up being
essentially girl friends?
She started laughing. I said, "What's so funny?" and she said, "You
were just telling me how cute Billy's sister is. Oh, my, wouldn't it
kill him if you ended up having a crush on his sister?!"
I said, "Oh, Mother, that's not funny! The poor boy! Although, she is
super cute, and to be honest, she wears makeup better than any girl in
our grade! I'm always checking her out to see if I can learn anything!
She is the only girl in the whole grade who really knows how to wear eye
shadow. Anyway, it might be fun to have a partner in crime! Oh,
Mommy, how about a slumber party with you, me, Billy and his sister! We
could all try on makeup and different hairstyles and stuff!"
Now Mother was giggling. "You do have an active imagination, young
lady. Because Billy showed a polite interest in things that were a bit
girlish, you already have him getting a makeover at a slumber party!"
I got serious for a moment and said, "Mother, if anyone knows when a boy
is reacting in a certain way to feminine things, it's me. And trust me,
there was definitely something there."
We sat there for a few minutes. I thought that maybe the conversation
had reached a natural conclusion, but Mother wasn't quite finished. She
said, "I have always wanted you to be true to yourself. I honestly
believe that is the only way you will be happy. I know you think I
pushed you into femininity, and it's true, I did, but only because it
was always so obvious to me how innately girlish you are. I just
thought you needed a little bit of a shove to find out who you were.
Because after all, society conspires against boy being girlish. I was
afraid you would not discover who you really were on your own. As for
Billy, well, I guess I had the same logic. To me, part of being
feminine is how a man makes me feel. Being with a man makes me feel
MORE feminine. And I am going to have a grownup conversation with you.
There is nothing that makes a woman feel more like a woman than when she
makes love to a man. And I mean that in the literal sense. When a man
is inside you, filling you up, it is the most exquisitely feminine
feeling. I am telling you this for a reason. You may not know for sure
whether you are attracted to boys until, well until you have had that
feeling I have just described. "
Wow! I was a little embarrassed! But Mother was treating me like a
grownup, and I tried to respond that way. I said, "Well, Mother, of
course you know there are lots of feminine girls who like other girls.
I don't think they feel like less of a woman because they like other
women. Maybe I'm like one of them." I giggled a little and said,
"Maybe I'm a boy who's really a lesbian!"
Mother said, "Maybe. I guess what I am saying is, until you have had
that feeling, you might not know for sure." She paused and then said,
"Are you curious?"
I said, "Well, maybe a little. But not to state the obvious, but I
don't have a vagina! How would I get that feeling, even if I wanted to?
And anyway, even if I could, you can't be suggesting that I sleep with a
guy just to find out if I like boys?"
Mother paused and quietly said, "Well, Honey, you don't need a vagina to
have that feeling. And you don't have to sleep with someone, either."
I had a completely blank look on my face. I had no idea what she was
talking about!
Mother said, "Why don't we have a little girls night in tomorrow night.
You just leave everything to me, ok? Now run upstairs and put on one of
your new nighties. And don't forget to take off your makeup like I
showed you. I will be up in a few minutes to kiss you goodnight."
