Sitting in his den, Darren Wynn blinked as he disconnected from the cyber
slipstream, taking a moment to readjust to reality. He decoupled the data
jack from the wetware implant behind his ear and closed his eyes,
verifying the data integrity of the software he'd downloaded, safe and
sound in his secondary memory implant.
His wife Miko had objected to the expense of the secondary implant,
calling it an "extravagance," but Darren had bluntly reminded her of her
own expensive tastes, which shut her up. Besides, he'd told her, he
needed it for his work.
In truth, his need for the additional wetware wasn't because of working
for her father at the Saito-Maddox Conglomerate, but rather his
underground moonlighting in cyberlarceny. His offenses, which had started
as simple embezzlement--unnecessary if they had simply paid him what he
was WORTH--soon escalated into SecurCode hacking and corporate espionage.
It was good money, and like Miko he had a taste for the finer things.
And he was good at what he did. He was very, very good. Yan
Multinational, ExaSoft Global, even the Tao Corporation job. All his
work. Or rather, the work of his hacker alter ego, "Cortex." They had no
idea.
This latest software he'd swiped was called M-IdAS, short for "Meta-
Identity Algedonic Stimulation," some new software-to-wetware control.
Darren didn't care what it did, but he smiled at the irony that M-IdAS
was going to make him very rich.
He scratched an itch around his wetware implant as he headed downstairs.
His wife and daughter were out of town on a ski trip, and he was in the
mood for some female companionship. Using his private line, he perused
the available "talent" and was about to order a young Russian escort when
his itching got worse. And it was spreading.
Suddenly his whole body felt like it was covered with a sunburn, and as
he peeled off his shirt, he saw that he was covered in hives! His mind
raced at what could have caused it. Some allergic reaction, or--
He froze, thinking about the itching around his wetware implant. "No," he
decided. "That's impossible." The cyberworld didn't--couldn't--affect the
real world like this.
And yet...
He closed his eyes, running a diagnostic on his implants. Everything
seemed fine, but...M-IdAS was gone! Darren shook his head. "That's
impossible," he repeated. Programs don't just delete themselves, not
unless they're--
He checked again. M-IdAS wasn't gone, it had transferred itself into his
primary wetware implant! "Technosapien," he whispered in alarm.
He ran to his terminal.
::ONE (1) PRIORITY message waiting for user 'Cortex'::
He opened the message, and his jaw dropped in shock. It was a recording
from his wife's father, Mr. Kimura.
"Hello, Mister 'Cortex.' By now you have discovered the little surprise I
planted for you. I've been keeping my eye on you for a while now...Yan
Multinational, ExaSoft Global, even the Tao Corporation job. I know
you've stolen from me. I also know that you work for me. I know you're
male and you work in the Saito-Maddox headquarters. Given enough time I
could deduce your identity, but I think it would be better if you came to
me."
Not likely, Darren thought to himself.
Kimura continued. "By now M-IdAS has co-opted your wetware implants and
tied into the pleasure and pain centers of your brain. The discomfort
you're experiencing is the lowest setting. You see, M-IdAS is designed to
monitor your senses, process input, and provide biofeedback 'incentives'
to encourage you to adopt a given meta-identity that's been selected for
you." He smiled. "I look forward to meeting you in person."
Darren was stunned, but didn't have much time to reflect on his situation
before the touch of his clothes started to scratch against his skin like
metal filings. "Aah!" he cried, yanking them off.
Even naked, the cool air felt like sandpaper on his sensitive skin.
He tried to jack in to his terminal but M-IdAS gave him a sharp jolt of
pain for his trouble. This was quickly followed by a rush of pleasure
when he laid eyes on the virtual marketplace. Soon, guided by M-IdAS, he
found himself purchasing several humiliating items and was rewarded with
an orgasmic feeling of euphoria as he requested Priority Rush Delivery.
A few hours later, the hoverdrone delivered his purchases and he quickly
dragged the box inside, not wanting to be seen naked by his neighbors.
His hands trembled as he opened the contents.
He hesitated, and the itching started again.
The TransGen box was the largest, boasting the latest GelFlesh
prosthetics. The nanoskin blended seamlessly with his flesh, giving him a
warm, jiggling woman's chest above and bulging hips and ass below. As he
buttoned up his blouse over his protruding bosom, M-IdAS gave him an
electric shiver of delight.
In the Cosmetix box, Darren pulled out the cartridge titled "Harajuku
Glam" and inserted it into his wife's makeup machine. Putting his chin on
the chinrest, he activated the machine and felt as it applied its
preprogrammed look to his face, turning away in shame as his fluttery
eyelashes framed his vision. The ManiCyure nail kit did similar wonders
for his fingernails. Instead of a wig, his wife's Coiffeuse styling
machine was programmed to style his short hair and give him pink
highlights and cute little extensions that framed his face.
"There is no fucking way I'm going anywhere like this," he muttered to
himself as he put on his earrings.
To his credit, he put up with the pain that M-IdAS inflicted on him for
almost a full ten seconds before he tearfully picked up his purse.
As he walked out the front door, Darren received a Saito-Maddox internal
news alert that the position for Mr. Kimura's receptionist had been
filled, and that "she" was reportedly excited to rejoin the workforce as
an honest woman.
