It was the summer of 1961 where my life took a drastic turn of events.
My name is Robert. I was 11 at the time and lived with my brother
Charles and my mother. My father had deserted us and had moved to
Detroit. This forced my mom to have to go to work. She worked at one
of the local plastic companies. She worked the third shift so she could
be home with us during the evening.
During this time my brother Charles had joined a gang. He was 16 and
didn't like staying home. Somehow on his night or evening excursions he
managed to join this gang of about 6 boys. Well he did get into trouble
and started breaking the law. After a few minor infractions he managed
to commit a major felony. It seems he and a couple of other boys had
broken into the New Car Barns. he Barns were the auto dealers kept
their new cars stored. They had caused a lot of damage, close to almost
$75,000 to be exact. The cars had keys in some of them and the boys had
smashed them into each other. Charles and two other boys had been
caught inside the Barns and were arrested. Mom and he had to go to
court and he was convicted as a juvenile. He was sentence to the Boy's
Industrial Farm until he turned 21. To say the least mom was extremely
upset. I only knew of this because mom had told me what had happened.
School had let out for the Summer on June 9th that year. Before I
continue I guess I should let you know more about me. Like I said I was
11 at the time. I was small in stature and extremely underweight. More
appropriately you could call me skinny. Although I ate everything mom
fixed (even veggies), I never seemed to put on weight. I had auburn
hair, light eyebrows and long eyelashes. Even though I had somewhat
short hair people sometimes thought I was a girl. I mean I was never
ever what would be called a boy's boy. I hated sports or rough housing,
had a fear of heights. I preferred music, art and dance. I also read
poetry. I also refused to wear jeans or cordoroy pants.
Mom was really fearful that I too would wind up joining a gang. She
knew that I wasn't like the other boys in the neighborhood. I did hang
around with a few boys but was with mostly girls. One day I came home
from visiting the girl across the street. She was carrying a few bags
from the local discount store.

and there is talk we may be going to 12 hour shifts. Here is the
problem. I cannot quit my job because I don't get any support from your
father, nor can I leave you to your own either. I don't have anyone to
watch you either. So I need you to stay in the house while I am at
work.
"I also can't leave you to be at the mercy of the gangs that are around
the neighborhood. I don't want you to wind up like your brother Charles
either. If I lost you, life would have no meaning for me anymore. Do
you understand? I nodded that I did. She continued., Well I talked to
Mrs. Johnson and she suggested a way for me to keep you in the house.
It is not a punishment, but to keep you safe. I want you to wear what I
have in the bag here next to me, then you can dressed how you want to on
my days off." At this time she started pulling things out of the bag.
To my shock it was four dresses. One being like a dress a girl would
wear to a party or for Easter. The others were the dresses girls would
wear to go play in. I had seen Cathy from across the street wearing
similar dresses."
"But Mom I'm A boy!" I exclaimed.
"I know honey," she said. "It is for just when I am at work so I know
you are safe in the house," she continued. "Only Mrs. Johnson would
know besides me and she promised not to tell anyone. She will come over
to fix your dinner and lunch. Can we at least try this for a bit or
until I can find another job." Mom looked as if she was about to cry.
I looked at her and said Okay as long as no one knows. "I promise
Bobby" she said. Lets try one on you to see if they fit first. I was
kind of nervous
about wearing the dress. Mom told me to just strip down the my
underwear. This I wasn't concerned about as she had seen me many times
dressed only in my undies. I was soon undressed while mom got the dress
ready. She slipped it over my head, having me raise my arms so the
sleeves went over my arms. She pulled it down into place then had me
turn around to button up the back. She turned me back around and pulled
me towards her wrapping her arms around me to hug me. "I love you," she
said. I love you too mom. I replied. At this she stood and told me to
go play in my room for now. I went on up to my room. It felt strange
to dressed so. I also liked the way it felt. I noticed right off when
I sat down to play with my trains that unlike the pants I wore my legs
felt free, not in a bind like pants did. I could move more freely in a
dress. I wondered if this was why girls like to play in their dresses.
I was up in my room for almost an hour when I heard mom calling to come
down for dinner. I came running down the steps in such a rush I didn't
see Mrs Johnson in the kitchen with mom. I also failed to see that
Cathy from across the street was also at my house. "My aren't we such a
cutie," I heard as I entered the kitchen. Bobby you look so sweet I
heard from Cathy. Mrs Johnson and Cathy both had seen me dressed in a
dress. I stood there in total shock, I couldn't move. Cathy, I think
brought me out my state I was in. Mom and Mrs. Johnson were just
standing there smiling at me. I wanted to run but could not as Cathy
had grabbed my hands. Instead I started to cry. Cathy wrapped her arms
around me and said, "Don't cry Bobby, I'm your friend." I cried,
"Everyone will know now." Cathy assured me it would be our secret and
she would never tell anyone. Mom told Cathy and I to go to my room and
play and we would eat later.
Up in my room Cathy said that she knew about the dresses because she had
picked them out for me earlier in the week with Mrs Johnson, and that
her mother knew as well. She said she liked me and didn't want me
turning out like the bad boys in the neighborhood. She further said she
knew I had a softer side that needed to expressed. With that being said
she kissed me and hugged me. I actually over the next few months began
to enjoy wearing my dresses. I even went over to Cathy's house wearing
them and of course to Mrs. Johnson's home. Cathy never teased me or
called me names.
