Seeker Clans, the Gathering, part 2 Ta Ray was on Aviara, trying to find the latest two who had been given a Seeker Clan Ring by Sharda. The Queens Council had given him two names. A male named Spinner, and a female named Honey, but they hadn't gotten a definite location and the local Avian's weren't any help either. He was becoming frustrated and called Trader to find out when Fern might be available to help. "She's on her way home with a stop on Sagittarius Three," said Trader. Then he filled him in on the upcoming meeting with the Sisters of Light and the Council of First Beings in three days. "I'll be there." he assured Trader before hanging up and turning to his freshly delivered meal at the truck stop. 'We are being watched,' came Sweetgums silent alert. He closed his eyes a second to see through her eyes, who was watching them. There had been a lot of people watching them since their arrival, and for Sweetgum to make note of it only meant she thought it important. He'd rented a small motor coach so that he wasn't having to jump everywhere. Now he sent Sweetgum to fetch the small pouch with his extra cash. It was just a means to give her a reason to pass the couple without suspicion. She remained visible all the way out as she went out the farthest entrance to go past the young couple. The boy and girl were about the same age, seventeen. And though they were cautious, they didn't shy away from Sweetgums proximity. They also watched her until she jumped inside. Sweetgum was probably the only Chow in existence that enjoyed wearing what she called her jewelry. Other chows refused to wear a collar with their Intergalactic Registration tags. But Sweetgum's held something extra, a small Matrix that wasn't really large enough to be used for much of anything. But this crystal he'd discovered pulsed with energy whenever it was close to another Matrix. Both he as well as Sweetgum had felt its flare of energy as she passed the two. That the pair had felt it as well was apparent by their reactions, and the pulse of the Imprint Matrix that one carried. Sweetgum reappeared outside the coach and made her way back to him. He took the pouch and petted her slowly. 'Thank you Love. Now we can follow their Matrix,' he told her silently knowing that Sweetgum had established a Psychic link to the pair as he had done with the Matrix they carried. Getting the waitress' attention he said, "This is for the young couple's meal." Then handed her a GC20 coin. "Sir, this is three times what they owe for the meal," he was informed. "Then keep the rest as a tip. Do you know the young couple?" he'd already paid for his own meal in advance since he wasn't sure if he'd be able to finish it before having to leave. "Oh, that's Spinner and his friend Honey. They've been trying to barter for a ride off planet. But they don't have any funds, and they won't sleep with any of the drivers for it," answered the waitress thinking that he was like a lot of the drivers passing through, wanting a sexual partner for the long stretch between planets. "Thank you, you've been helpful," he told the waitress and added another GC10 coin to the tip beside his plate. From the corner of his eye he saw the boy give something to the girl who quickly stood and went outside. There she pulled her thin jacket closed in front as the wing slits opened to let her extend them out the back. She pushed her hood back as she turned to wave at the boy before taking flight, and there it was, the tattoo of the Wind Clan. 'It's amusing,' commented Sweetgum. 'I wonder if Prescious' Bondmate would rip her wings off.' She was referring to the waitress who was now hovering close by hoping to dally with Ta Ray in the motor coach before he left. 'Not my cup of tea and Gwendolyn knows it,' he reminded his Chow. 'Of course Gwen might be happy to know that she has won my heart.' In fact, since the loss of his wife before Impressing Sweetgum, Mistress Gwendolyn Heart was the only woman he'd been with. He'd never even used one of those that was 'for rent by the hour', something that Gwendolyn admired about him. He quickly finished his meal, then stood up removing his own light jacket. In doing so he knew everyone could now see the tattoos clearly that adorned his left arm. His hair still covered his forehead though as he walked towards the far entrance. He paused at the table, "I understand you and your friend are 'Seeking' a ride. I'm heading toward Omega Seven, and then Iridani Five soon." He emphasized the word 'Seeking'. "I'm not sure about," began Spinner, his eyes studying the tattoos on Ta's arm. "High Priestess Sharda was lying when she told you to avoid other Seekers. I just want to help you learn what it means, especially since I am sure that like all the others she didn't tell you anything. And you can assure Honey that I am not looking for sexual companionship. But I do have a meeting with other Seekers in three days, so I'll be outside in the coach if you decide to join me for the trip." In the motor coach he busied himself with a bit of tidying up while he waited. Of course he knew why the young couple hadn't found anyone to give them a ride. The Avian Government refused to allow non-adult Avian's to travel off planet without a male parent to assure that they returned. It wasn't actually the government's decision as much as a response to those it represented. But not many of the off world drivers knew that the police would not actually stop a traveler unless an actual crime had been committed or there was a formal request by a family. He didn't have to wait long. Spinner knocked on the door and he answered it, inviting him in. "Is your offer only for Honey and I, or does it extend to others?" asked the boy. 'Three others,' stated Sweetgum picking up the thoughts. 'One is their two-year-old child.' "Of course they are welcome to travel with us. Do they by chance know that you are Seekers?" he asked. "They're also Seekers. Well not as old or experienced as Honey and myself, they've only had their rings for a few months. Sharda told them to find us to be 'Imprinted' with our Matrix," stated the boy. "And did you imprint them?" asked Ta Ray. "No, Honey said we should wait, it didn't feel right to imprint children the way we were by Sharda." Ta could feel a bit of resentment toward the former High Priestess. 'They come,' informed Sweetgum. "Is it really safe for us to be with other Seekers of different Clans?" asked Spinner Eyeing Sweetgum warily. "Very safe, and you should know that if there is a threat, Sweetgum will fight just as hard to protect you and the others as she would me. Probably even more so for you and Honey's child," stated Ta, Sweetgum threw her head back and yowl hooped her agreement. "I should tell you beforehand though, Sweetgum adores children. All Gambichow's do, they become very protective of them. And Sweetgum will be giving birth soon, so she's exceptionally maternal." He talked him through how to get acquainted and then they let him be the one to invite the others inside as three Patrol cars pulled into the lot. Ta Ray quickly took in the ten and eight year olds following Honey who herself was carrying her son 'Vision', and realized that this might be one of those times where the police actually stepped in to stop them from leaving due to the ages of the three youngest involved. He was watching the police with a wary eye as he introduced himself to the new arrivals. Peach was eight, Tumbler was ten, and both a bit frightened. Especially when they saw that more police were arriving now that the younger children had been spotted. "I need for you all to trust me here," he said. "I am about to call someone to help us all leave without them," he motioned towards the police, "Knowing that we have left." And then he called Gwendolyn. "Ta, I've missed you. How soon before you return?" she sounded anxious. "I'd love to return now but I need a bit of help first," he said. "I am on Aviara with four new Seekers and an infant. And I'd like to be able to Jump us all safely to Iridani if I might jump to you there?" "You know where my Cottage is, I'll meet you there," she answered. "Thank you Love," he blew her a kiss then ended the call. The only thing holding the police back from the coach was the fact it was rented by an Orion Ambassador. "Quickly now, grab what you need to take, then everyone hold hands." Five minutes later the planetary Police Captain opened the door of the motor coach to find it empty. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Iridani Kitten Academy, Headmistress' Cottage; Gwendolyn took in the four new Seekers with Ta Ray and understood why he had to leave the way he had. After a very enthusiastic greeting, he called Trader to let him know what was happening. "Fern actually is about two hours out, she's bringing two members of the Mountain Clan, and Spirit Woman Sidestep. She said to tell you she was sorry for the delay," Trader told him. "Tell her not to worry, we all got here safely. Is Sugar or Spice around there by any chance?" asked Ta. Now Trader chuckled, "Spice is right here waiting for the school bus to drop off the girls. Do you need to talk to her?" "I have five new Avian's with me, four Seekers and a toddler," he said as Spice stepped into the view. Seeing the four Avian's she touched her forehead, "I see you friends." Of course she had her and Sugars infants with her. "We see you," responded the children. "Ambassador, please bring them to the diner. I'll let Jojo know so they can meet Nochi as well. Oh and Izzy and Roamy are there at the Academy." They soon jumped to the Diner with Ta Ray. Ta knew something was up by the way Trader was acting, but what? Leading everyone to the private section he didn't have long to wait. Dr Tsing was here checking over two new Seekers, when she looked up he saw the Clan Tattoos. A Bone Clan and a Sun Clan, but they looked like they'd been run through a ringer. "Missy Wyoming found them on 'Too Far Gone', I think we need to make sure anyone going there has a non-Seeker Jumper handy though," stated Trader. "Why is that?" Ta was now curious. "Our new friends," he nodded toward the four Avian's, "only have one Thrall Matrix between them?" "You can feel a shielded Matrix again?" Ta asked with amazement. "Dad, I could feel at least a hundred if not more on that planet," he responded. "Tizzy, Kricket and Nor Vey almost lost it themselves." "Son, what aren't you telling me?" asked Trader. "We were in such a hurry to get everyone out of there we didn't take time to shield the ones those two had collected. Nirisanni Tay had five Thrall Matrix on her. The Bone Clan Seeker had nine, he's in pretty bad shape." Trader didn't have to explain any more as he looked over the others in the room. With fourteen unshielded Thrall Matrix together they wouldn't need to touch one to be imprinted. They were already showing signs of feeling a Crystal's Thrall. And the most probable reason the two newest were in such bad shape was because no one had ever taught them how to shield a Matrix. They'd been carrying them with them all together in the same bag with nothing to insulate them from each other. Too Far Gone was on an newly created outer spur of the freeway leading into the Earta Quadrant. But still how would two newly imprinted Seekers get pulled all the way out there? It was a long way to follow the call of a Matrix, especially since none of the other Seekers had been drawn there. And he as well as Fern had been closer than anyone. Getting Ta's attention Trader said, "I think we need a Bio-Ship to run a survey." "Good luck, they all just left out of here in a hurry headed toward Demonia after that incident with the Queen and Cardurann and Zandra being found." Everyone turned to look at the speaker. Niesha Creed was seventeen, the oldest of the newly revived Ancient Children. "What's happening in Demonia?" asked Ta Ray. "I wonder if they'll be back in time for the meeting with the Sisters of Light?" wondered Trader. The meeting was set for two days before Halloween, and all of the schools, including the Indian Schools were celebrating it. "They should be back," assured Niesha. "Hub would never disregard an arrangement." They were still sitting there when Pole Dancer arrived. Of course by now the experienced Seekers had all of the Matrix' separated and shielded. "Everyone, this is Banjo and Julip," Fern introduced the two Centaur teens with the Mountain Clan Tattoo's. Seeing Niesha, Mistress Sidestep asked, "Are you excited to meet Tangie Athene-Regent?" "Who?" asked the teen? "Crylon Regent's O'shawi wife," she was looking around confused now. "I thought that was why you were all here, to plan for Crylon's welcome." "Crylon was sent on an exploration mission by his father. But no one has heard from him. And there has been no sign of the O'shawi families since they left before even the First, First Queen of the Phase Spiders was created," Niesha began. Now Sidestep realized that her visions and dreams were not something that everyone here knew about. Not even the A'shiwi. Now she wondered how the Avian's and Demonians would react to the fact that they were actually descended from the O'shawi side of the family of Ancients. She soon stopped wondering about that as three of the local Spirit Women joined her here. They shared hugs, and Sidestep hugged her daughter who was Fox's new Apprentice. "Have you come to bless Midnight Angel, Momma?" she asked with excitement. "Midnight Angel?" "Tuti's new foal," answered Fox. "She was born at Midnight last night. That is where we are headed now. But we saw Centaur One and decided to stop." "Oh then we will ride as far as the Shelter and then go on foot as is custom." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ In the private section the gathered members of the Seekers Council now met. "I've never encountered a Matrix like those before," Tessa the eldest member of the council stated. "Nor have any of us," Tizzy confirmed. There were three of them, and they had been brought by the Seekers rescued from 'Too Far Gone'. "Any word on when Hub and the Bio-Ships will be back or what it was that got them all fired up?" asked Ta Ray. They were waiting for Veeda to arrive before discussing how best to deal with the accidental exposure of Oshiwa, Colleen and Tammy. Veeda had been at school assessing whether Prissy and Glorri had been affected. They had been at Fender Skirts across the road at the time. Suddenly Veeda rushed into the diner and without any explanation she up ended a crystal salad bowl over the one that Trader had setting before him. "No, shield it," she demanded. "Where you get Bio-Stasis Matrix? Very powerful." Everyone just looked at her stunned. "That Bio-Stasis Matrix," she explained even as her shaking hands stretched out toward it. "So they can make new Bio-Ships with these?" asked Tizzy. "No. this, this not from Bio-Ship." Her fingers trembled as she caressed the outside of the bowl. Then she gasped, "This Trojan's Matrix. He U'shiwi. U'shiwi bad, very bad." Her face took on a look of horror and she feinted. "U'shiwi?" asked the others in unison. "Shield them, all of them. We have to retrieve those that are in the vault," said Ta Ray, Sweetgum had fed him images from Veeda's mind. He looked up to see a figure striding purposefully across the lot to the Diner. This was the only one they'd removed from the Vault to study as a group. "Dad take it now, get it off the planet," Trader said to him as Ash' Nihau Creed reached for the door. In a second he grabbed the Matrix and was gone. Ash' Nihau stopped just inside the door looking around at everyone, then zeroed in on the Seekers. "You have a Matrix here. Where is it?" she demanded. Tizzy removed one from her pouch. "This one?" "Do not try to fool me child, I felt a Bio-Matrix." Still slightly groggy Veeda finally sat up. "You right Tizzy, three Thrall Matrix too much to channel same time." "Channel, you tried to channel the power of three Thrall Matrix at the same time? Why, you are not a Tuner." Ash' Nihau said unaware that Veeda was at that moment rubbing her thumb around in circles on an unused A'shiwi Stasis Matrix under the table. This one was nowhere near as powerful as the Bio-Matrix. When she noticed the movement Ash' Nihau demanded she hand it over thinking it was the Bio-Matrix. As she started to hand it to her though Ash' Nihau grabbed it, closing her fingers around it fully. "Yes," she said gleefully, then she gasped as her body began to shimmer and shrink. In less than a second the Matrix dropped to the table top. Veeda delicately picked it up with a piece of hide, wrapping it tightly. "I not stupid Ash' Nihau. My mother teach me also to tune," she said to the Matrix before she placed it in her pouch. "Veeda, where did she go?" asked Trader. "She back in Stasis. She be very mad when she get out." "But you need an array to use a Stasis Matrix," gasped Fern. Now Veeda giggled. "I north point, you other five points. Six points to Stasis Array." They just stared at her unbelieving that she had manipulated the Seeker Matrix that each one carried. "But why did you do that?" Tizzy finally asked. "She go," Veeda made a circle around her ear. "Whacko," she grinned with glee remember the word she wanted in Universal. "You can't tell me that you learned that on Tall Tree," said Fern. "No, we taught her," said Night Wolf and Reader as they made their presence known. Reader held out her hand and Veeda gave her the Matrix. "She was unstable, becoming demanding. She is also the only Pureblood Ancient left. And she would become as bad as Cylon if left free long enough," predicted Reader. "If she had her way every ancient in Stasis would have been awakened by now and we would all be doing her bidding," said Night Wolf. "She wants to rebuild the A'shiwi into a dominant race again. But she wants it done right now." Reader took the Matrix now and tucked it safely in her own little pouch. "Until the Council of First Beings can determine what to do about her. Did you know that she sent two untrained Seekers to 'Too Far Gone' aboard a Road Builder?" "You know about 'Too Far Gone'?" asked Ta Ray as he returned from wherever he'd gone. "It is the Ancient equivalent of the prison on Halcion," said a new figure as she appeared in the midst of the room. Then she held her hand out toward Reader who carefully placed the Stasis Matrix in it. "I have asked the Road Builders where the order to build that stretch of freeway came from. It is now being closed. They will provide Missy Wyoming with a safe escort home." "Are you mad at Veeda?" asked Reader. "No the Council is not mad. Had she gotten her hands on even one of the three now on this planet, she would have released forces ten times worse than Cylon himself." She reached out and caressed Veeda's chin, "You have done your mothers proud today little one." There was a pause, "If you would be so kind as to bring me those Matrix' so that we can ensure they are returned to where they belong before my Brother and his O'shawi wife Tangie arrives." "The O'shawi?" "Yes Cardurann, the Ancients who spawned the Demonian, Draconian, Avian and Ruuk races. Oh they also created the Dragons, Gambichow's and the Unicorns," she was smiling. "They are visiting with your lovely wives and Daughters but will be here tomorrow." "Thank you Sylvia," said Ta Ray as he handed over the Matrix which she held up and said "Galaxia, if you would please?" It disappeared from her open palm. "Now could someone direct me to where Mistress Sidestep might be found? She needs to know that she is invited to witness the meeting with the Sisters of Light." "She's at the Tyler Ranch. Tuti had her foal, Midnight Angel," supplied Oshiwa. "Would you like for me to fly you out there?" Smiling warmly she answered, "Only if you have permission first." "Oshi, take the Diner Shuttle," said Paula. "And your sisters. And you can deliver the mail that Pinto dropped off from Earth this morning. But let Sequin fly on the way back." "Yes Momma," she hugged her and raced out the door to prep the shuttle, her sister's right behind her, eager for a chance to see the new foal

Blood of the Clans Ch 17

The three story-tellers stood at the prow, looking at the faces of the love-struck women, as they heard the story of Garreth and Therese. They couldn’t help but feel they were telling a love story, the way they all sighed and moaned, at all the romance of it. They had made it to the tip of the western coast and came to Neist Point Lighthouse, perched atop a jagged out-cropping of rock, the sheer bluffs surrounding it. The yacht plowed through the breaking waves, making the turn to head north...

Dragon Clans Bk 02 Pt 06

An early frost had turned the Japanese landscape coppery brown as the Kawasaki BK117 helicopter sped over the low mountains heading out of Tokyo. The land was rugged, but held an inherent mystery that Michael found intriguing. It was a stark contrast to the emerald greens and deep browns that Michael had just left behind in England. Three helicopters now wound their way northwest from Tokyo toward Sado Island in the Niigata Prefecture. A few of Onji’s people had met them when they had landed. ...

Blood of the Clans Ch 13

While Garreth and Grayson awaited the start of the trial, James MacRae had already broken the cease-fire pact and sat with several leaders of smaller clans, at the head of the table of Andrew MacDougall. Andrew, sat on his left, in his deteriorating Dunollie Castle, while to his right was a captain of the Earl’s guard, dressed in full regalia for representation of his position. McCauley Fraser, Harlan Douglas and Jacob MacLean sat to either side of Andrew and the captain. He had put it to the...

Blood of the Clans Ch 38

Early in the morning, Douglas Wallace set off in his carriage with an escort of guards for Edinburgh, remaining true to his word. About the same time, James MacRae was on his way to the MacLean, Douglas and MacDougall clans. He wanted his dreams of victory to become real and he too didn’t want to lose what he had already invested in this campaign. Any objections aside, these clans needed to be trained hard and fast to be ready for the plans of attack. Taking the long way down the western shore...

Tavish did his best to accept the reality of the events that had transpired in centuries past and agreed Garreth and Arabella had produced a child together. Tom looked at Argus and then to his uncle, before speaking. ‘Uncle Stuart, does this mean that you and Argus are related then?’ ‘So it would seem, Tom. I’ll ha’e tae go through the lineage wi’ him and see where he fits in, but it does look like we are a blood relation from the same heritage.’ Stuart told him, smiling at Argus. ‘So, is it...

Garreth MacLeod stood with his mother, Julia and his younger brother, Peadair at the battlement wall, watching the birlinns sail out into Dunvegan Bay. Little did they know how life would change, with the events that would soon follow. His father, William, thirteenth Chief of the MacLeod’s of Harris and Dunvegan, was setting out to battle with the MacKenzie’s, after they had attacked MacLeod clan members along Loch Alsh. Garreth, only seventeen at the time, wanted to go with him, but was bid...

Two days after MacRae and his men left Inverlochy, two more groups had come to the castle with news. A pair of messengers in French uniform were given entry to see the Earl, the senior officer bearing word for Therese. Two hours after they left to return to the ship, Garreth and Grayson, along with twenty, heavily armed men rode in with four prisoners in tow. They dismounted, but left the men tied to the horses, their men keeping watch over them. Garreth and Grayson walked into the main...

Glenn MacDonald stood at the prow of the black birlinn, his hand holding the figurehead of a grey dragon as they crossed the choppy waters of the inner sea on the way to the Isle of Skye, the thoughts of his kin slaughtered and burnt, still weighing heavy on him. As they approached the south shore, he yelled to the men in the other birlinn to make for Castle Camus and set up defences. He sadly saw the small fishing boat of Jacob Dornie, his arm draped lifeless over the side, the sail still...

Iain saw his men following MacRae towards the shore and broke from cover. Screaming as loud as he could and waving his arms, he hoped his brother, or one of the others would hear or see him. Grayson joined him, both waving their arms and yelling the MacLean motto and then more voices joined in. Stuart MacLean was riding with his clansmen in the last half of the charge, when his arm was pulled by one of his men and told to turn and look at the two men on the battlefield. ‘Uncle Stuart, are you saying the Irish were involved in the fighting as well?’ Tom asked him. ‘Aye Tom, the Irish in question were the relatives of Laird Hamish MacDonnell, as well as descendants of the MacDonald’s. They had a few castles on the north-east coast, one called Kinbane Castle, which means ‘White Headlands’, because of the white limestone of the area, another being Dunluce Castle, which was a bit farther doon the coast from it and yet another on Rathlin Island. It was getting close to mid-day the following day, when Therese first caught a glimpse of the coast of France. The confirmation of seeing it made her heart jump with excitement. The entire trip was made in thought and now it held in her heart, if those thoughts would come to pass. The hazy line of mist finally gave way to the coastal splendour of St. Brieuc, the same place she left from in misery, but now returning to in joy. Even the brightly painted buildings took on a cheerier complexion. ...

The gardens were alive with light and colour, as the streaks of sunlight filled the grounds of Dunvegan. High up in the Fairy Tower, banners were raised and the soft wind had them fluttering gently. Servants and staff were busy at first light, preparing food and drink for the feast afterwards. The hall was decorated in bright colours of cloth and...

The arrow tip followed its target slowly, staying on mark and waiting for the right moment to release. Kyle MacDonnell was a skilled hunter and waited patiently, keeping the tension on the bow taut. Blood of the Clans Ch 41

Tom and Deb awoke the next morning and once breakfast was over, they headed outside to the gardens and imagined what it was like over four hundred and twenty years ago, when Garreth and Grayson joined with their ladies. They walked along what they imagined to be the flower-lined path and tried to imagine pipers leading them to the altar. Coming to a clear area of grass beside a low garden wall, Deb felt they had come to the spot Uncle Stuart had described. She turned to look back at the castle...

Ch. 7 The memory bloomed vivid for Michael as he raced into the fortress. Nicholas standing over Ian’s body. Blood dripping slowly down the dagger’s point, leaving a muddy crimson stain in the sand. Cold dead eyes locking with his for an instant before Michael was dragged away. ‘I could have saved him.’ The thought had haunted Michael ever since that afternoon. Watching Ian’s life essence slip away while Nigel and Sims had pulled him back from the carnage. He understood the reasons,...

Blood of the Clans Ch 10

Colin MacDonnell rode with haste through the countryside towards the attacking MacRae’s. It was his duty to watch them and ride back when they started to march for Donan. Having lived, travelled and hunted in the area all his life, he knew the best route to take and where he could safely watch them without being spotted. It was his deepest hopes as he prayed, that he could live through this night and return to his wife and family, alive and well. He’d seen the results of battle with Claymores...

Grayson and his men were also up before the sun broke over the mountain peaks. Breaking camp and mounting up, they followed River Sheil to the mouth and turned west, to ride along the shore to a narrow crossing of Strath Duich, shallow enough for them to traverse it. They were just making their way along the coast of Loch Duich, when the sound of cannon fire broke the misty morning silence, sending wildlife fleeing from their safe positions. Grayson knew immediately that the battle had started,...

Stuart could see that many of the guests were getting tired, but still interested in the story. Feeling it should be told to completion, he thought of something to really make it hit home with a flourish. ‘How about I finish here and let everyone get a good sleep. In the morning, we’ll rise early at six or so and we’ll go fer a sail on the yacht. I’ll ha’e a breakfast prepared tae eat on board and we can stop in and get a bite later on in one of our stops. ‘If ye’ll remember, Garreth has asked Therese and Grayson has just asked Heather. Grayson and Heather, along wi’ Sorley and Randal, are sailing back tae Tioram.’ Stuart reminded everyone, and got nods and ‘Ayes,’ in return. Tom and Deb both looked anxious to hear what Stuart was going to tell them. Stuart looked at them and smiled, then gave them a wink, before starting in. ******************** The birlinn turned to port and sailed into Loch Moidart, the afternoon sun glittering off the...

Blood of the Clans

Chapter 1 April 1589 — Loch Leven The drenching rains fell heavy as they often do in spring, in the western highlands of Scotland. Through the trees in the early morning, grey haze, a flash of lightning illuminated the murderous eyes of a small army of clansmen peering upon the sleeping village. The evil in the eyes of the leader showed the mindset on carrying out the events about to happen. They made their way into Ballachulish on the south shores of Loch Leven, the thrumming of rain on...

The dark, purple clouds hung low on the mountains, heavy with moisture and were releasing their burden rapidly. The fierce winds were driving it on a slant, almost level to the ground, but five riders were mounted and ready to ride north, soaked already but unconcerned with the weather. Harlan looked at his clan and then to the others riding with him. Eamon had agreed to go to see James MacRae and explain what they had found to him. He was completely unaware of the ramifications his disclosure...

Garreth had his men roused before the sun had finished breaking over the mountain tops. The birlinns were loaded the day before, so all he had to do was prepare them for the battle plans. ‘Clansmen, we sail fer Donan tae guard the passage from the sea. There’s no question they’ll see us from the castle, but we need tae get as close as we can, tae see how many men are there. We’ll make camp on the shore tae keep watch on the castle, as well as the sea, until the MacDonald’s and MacDonnell’s...

The Justice rocked against the anchor chains, as its guns roared, its shots peppering the thick stone walls. Chunks of stone sprayed off the walls, leaving foot deep impressions behind. From the south, MacRae watched as the cannon took shot after shot, until it found the gate. The wood shattered and splintered open with the impact, leaving the castle open to attack. From across Duich, the thirty two pound cannon barraged the west wall, demolishing the new cannon battlement and any means of...

Grayson helped the women aboard by genuflecting on one knee and allowing them to use his leg as a step, while Glenn helped his aunt and cousin up and into the boat. Once aboard, Grayson gave the order to sail and waved to them, as they wound along the loch towards open water, the mid-morning sun bright in the cloudless sky. Grayson turned back and...

Malcolm MacDougall stood in Dunollie, looking at the brilliant display lighting up the early morning sky. The sun broke the horizon and lit the morning in golden brightness, but the brightness on Lismore outshone it, making those in and around the castle take note of it. What bothered Malcolm about it, was the closeness to where the birlinns were hidden. After dressing, he made his way down the steep, stone steps to the hall and called the men together. Since the massacre of the Fraser’s, the...

Blair could see his father and yelled out to him, but he was still too far away for any assistance in cover fire. MacRae sat on his horse and watched, as Grayson’s birlinn closed on...

Chapter 3 Time seemed to stand still as Aoife embraced Michael. Standing there, wrapped in a golden leathery cocoon, Michael was tense, his muscles flexing, ready to endure what was to come. Aoife felt the tension coming off Michael in waves. ‘Be calm Michael, there is nothing painful in this. It will be a sensation the likes of which you have never known, but it does not cause pain.’ Aoife’s calm, safe tone reassured Michael. He relaxed into her embrace, still pensive but resolute with his...

The guns of the Justice were battering down the walls of Knock, as shot after shot of solid iron kept crumbling the blocks apart, while other shot burst into flames when it hit. The birlinns kept racing towards it, the men readying arrows and lighting a fire in a steel pot. Then you hear another cat enter the small den, but this one has a different scent than the warm smell of the nursing she-cats. You slowly...
