A Bit of Bass
Chapter 1: Indy Punk
Chase Price sat on the weight bench in his room, doing curls with a 40
pound dumb bell. His massive arms swelled on each raise and the veins
pop up from the skin. He did 20 quick pulls then switched to the other
hand before repeating the process. Just as he finished he heard clunky
footsteps in the doorway.
He looked up to see a scantily dressed girl in platform boots and
rainbow colored hair. "Ah, so that's why no spikes tonight. Afraid
you'd sweat 'em out before we even hit the pit?"
Chase smiled at the girl, his sister Alysia, and replied "What? Spikes
to a Casualties show? May as well be wearing one of their t-shirts." He
stood up, looking down admirably at his muscular arms. They were his
favorite feature and went perfectly with the rest of his body, truly
massive for someone just preparing for high school.
"God, you are such a meathead." Alysia shook her head and smiled at her
brother. "Get a move on Adonis, we're gonna miss the opener."
Chase brushed the green hair back away from his face and replied, "Just
finishing my pump, I'm good to go Lili." He grabbed a patch covered
denim vest and slipped it on.
Alysia groaned and rolled her eyes at the use of the childhood
nickname. "Cut that Lili shit or I'm taking the ticket back."
Chase threw his hands up in a gesture of capitulation. Alysia grinned
at the victory and the two left his room. As they headed down the
hallway, he thought about how glad he was that Alysia was able to visit
this Summer. They had been so close before the divorce and with her
living across the country with their dad, they hardly ever got to see
each other anymore. He hated to admit it, but he missed his big sister.
Alysia and Chase walked down the hall and through the living room,
rushing past their mother and 9 year old sister Tricia. Their mother
called, "Wait a minute you two." They reluctantly came to a stop as
their mother rose off the couch. Their mother approached them. "Now,
you know the rules home by 11. I don't care if it is Summer."
They answered in near unison, "Yes mom."
As their mother reached them, she continued, "And be careful, that club
is in such a nasty part of town. You mind your sister while you are
there Chase. "
"Yes mom," they answered, though Alysia had to fight rolling her eyes
at the idea that she needed to be protected.
Their mother pointed to her cheek and they both gave her a kiss on the
cheek, just wanting to avoid the fight. "Have fun you two."
They left the house and headed to the relatively well preserved
cavalier that Alysia had recently received for her 16th birthday. They
piled in, though Chase was forced to pull his knees close to his chest
to fit in the small car, and the problem was only exacerbated by the
trash covered floor.
They drove downtown, unable to converse over the music blaring from the
stereo system, but they were comfortable in the conversational void.
The drive was actually quite short and they pulled into a small parking
lot near a club called the blast chamber. They got out, unafraid of the
dodgy neighborhood because of a combination of youthful arrogance and
the fact that Chase was larger than most grown men despite being only
15. They made their way into the Blast Chamber, one of the only places
to see a decent all ages punk show in Indianapolis. The line at the
door was almost gone by the time that they arrived and after a fairly
invasive pat-down they entered the club.
It was a classic open club with a cement floor and raised stage. They
stayed near the back for the opener, and got a couple bottles of water
as they watched the depressingly quiet and low key opening act. Chase
didn't even actually catch their name, but he certainly thought they
sucked. As they opener wrapped, Chase chugged the rest of his water and
made his way toward the center of the club. The opening chords to
Police Brutality came out of the massive amps that the band placed on
stage and the crowd started to roil.
Chase threw himself into the pit and came alive. He loved coming to
punk shows and never felt more alive than in the pit. He loved it so
much that it took him several songs to realize that something was
wrong. He felt too good, as strange as that seemed, but he realized
that he was starting to feel almost euphoric, like the music messaged
every cell in his body. "Shit" he said, stumbling to the outer edge of
the pit, " I think I got dosed." He forced himself through the crowd,
feeling ever stranger. He felt so good that he could barely keep from
giggling and his steps became more awkward as if he were severely
drunk.
He barely made it to Alysia upright as Punk Rock Love played. He
grasped the collar of her jacket and slurred, "Lili, I feel weird." She
barely got a look at his eyes, which were now an intense shade of
orange rather than the hazel they once were. She stared shocked for a
second and whispered "Shit." She tried vainly to catch him as he
started to fall and she called for a medic.
Chapter 2: While you were sleeping
Chase was in a deep sleep when he was awoken by the sound of a voice.
"What the hell are you doing?"
He wondered who that was. It sounded familiar. After a beat, he
recognized Alysia's voice. He opened his eyes and looked around the
room, expecting to see Alysia, but being surprised to see his room
empty.
A different voice responded to Alysia, he recognized it as their
mother. "What? I was just going to make a phone call." That seemed to
sound so close, but must have been coming from across the house.
"What the fuck?" Chase said, now thoroughly confused. He started to
hear other sounds now, a ticking clock, a child humming a song. Jesus
it was like every sound in the house was coming from a foot in front of
his fact. The weird thing was, he was easily able to process all of it.
Every fine detail of the sounds was plain to him and easy to
differentiate.
Alysia spoke again. "I saw your laptop. The MCO? Seriously?"
Her mother responded, "I don't need to account to you young lady, but
even if I did, you are supposed to contact the MCO in situations like
this."
Alysia cried, clearly getting upset. "Please, do you know what those
monsters do? They are the mutant SS for Christ's sake."
Her mother called back, getting heated, "Don't you talk to me that way
and not everyone who works for the government is a Nazi. You have got
to stop listening to than anarchist propaganda."
Alysia yelled back, "They are monsters. They make mutants disappear.
And Jesus, this isn't a neighbor or something, that mutant is your son!
I should never have said anything"
The bottom fell out of his stomach.... A mutant. He should have
figured. He must have been hearing them from across the house because
of some kind of power. "Fuck..." is all he could say.
The argument continued between Alysia and their mother. "So What? I
have to make sure it is safe to have around you and Tricia!"
There was a pause before Alysia responded "It? Did you just call him an
it? For Christ's sake you are a monster. He's your child! And not all
mutants are dangerous you know."
Their mother said condescendingly, "You only think that because you
don't have a child in danger. These things need to be controlled, they
are like wild animals."
Alysia was furious by then, the anger wringing in her voice. "Some of
US are dangerous, but most of us are just people trying to get by."
There was another pause as their mother took in the meaning of that
statement. "No... "
"Afraid so mom. 2 for 3, what do you think the odds are that Tricia is
in for a rough adolescence?" Alysia asked, a sting in her voice.
"How dare you? How can you even say that about her? She is an innocent
child!"
Alysia's tone changed as she got her head back under control. "Listen,
just calm down. I... we aren't going to be a danger to anyone."
Their mother calmed down a little at the shifted tone. "You can't be
sure of that." She took a deep breath "This is just... a lot to
process. I don't think I can handle this."
"Just relax mom. Step away from the phone." She put a hand over the
receiver. "I have an idea. Hear me out. How about I talk to dad and see
if he would mind Chase coming back with me? Chase gets away from you
and Tricia and there's no chance that he ends up is a black cattle
car."
Their mother took a deep breath and said, "Okay. Fine. Call him." Chase
heard someone walking and then the phone being dialed.
He pulled himself up out of the bed and started to walk toward the
mirror on his weight bench. He felt tired but otherwise pretty good. He
thought to himself, "Did she say that I was a mutant? That's crazy." As
he walked, his pajama pants started to slip so he held them up with one
hand.
He looked into his mirror and was puzzled for a second. The first thing
that struck him was that his hair had grown several inches, his normal
brown roots exposed like it had been months since his last dye job
instead of days. Then he noticed the intense orange eyes. "What the
fuck?"
He leaned in to get a better look at his face and saw that it had
changed subtly. He couldn't tell exactly how, but he could see it was
... different somehow. Only once he looked down and took in the full
picture did he notice the other changes. He was smaller, maybe 2 inches
shorter and down several pounds of muscle. He was still big for his
age, but no longer the mountain that he had been when he left the house
yesterday.
He was stunned by the sight for a second, but took the three steps to
the scale he used for his daily weigh-ins. As he stepped on and the
LED's flickered, they settled on 210.5. He had lost more than 22 pounds
in less than a day. "Maybe not so crazy." He shook his head and turned
his back on the mirror and the scale, trying to push it out of his
mind. He pulled on a shirt and a pair of jeans which he belted tightly.
It was only then that he noticed that he was no longer hearing noises
from all round the house.
He exited his room and made his way down the hall toward the stairs. As
he returned to the first floor, he saw his mother look his way then
quickly avert her eyes and move toward the kitchen. He muttered to
himself, "Love you too mom."
He headed toward the lounge and entered just in time to hear his sister
say, "... will be there in a couple of days. Love you too." She hung up
and looks toward Chase. "Chase! You're up. Listen, there's
something..."
"I heard the talk between you and mom. Somehow. So I caught that part."
He looked at her, hoping she wasn't freaked out by his new eyes. Then
unconsciously he looked down, letting his now longer hair hand over his
face. "What did he say?"
Alysia walked over to him and put her hand on his chin, gently pushing
it up until they are looking at each other. "He said he was so happy,
he couldn't contain himself and that of course he could never turn away
his child."
Chase smiled at that, genuinely relieved and happy. "Guess I have some
packing to do right."
Alysia nodded. "Yeah, I don't know if mom is done or just delayed so
the sooner the better. I figure we pack and get some shut eye, Head for
South Carolina in the morning."
He nodded. "Okay. She uh, she is not gonna want me back is she."
Alysia paused for a few seconds. "Honestly, I don't think so. She
didn't take the news well."
He pusheed his hair back absentmindedly. "Shit Listen Alysia I want to
talk about the mutant thing, but I don't think I can take much more
right now so can we handle it on the road?"
Alysia smiled at him warmly. "You got it squirt."
He reached out and wrapped her in a hug without saying anything. She
wrapped her arms around him and they stayed that way for several
minutes, comfortable in the silence as always.
Chapter 3: On the Road
The next morning, Chase crammed the last of his important possessions
into one of the cardboard boxes. After he finishes packing, he stepped
onto his scale one last time and looked down. The digital readout read
203.2 and that was fully clothed. "Well at least it seems to be slowing
down." He said before picking up the scale and dropping it in the box.
He picked the box up and looked around one last time. "Damn. Well chin
up boy, new adventures around the corner."
He walked out of the house. He said goodbye to his mother but she only
sort of grunted in response and walked away. He exchanged a brief hug
with Tricia and walked out to the car, trying hard not to look back.
He put the box in the back seat and slipped into Alysia's car, pulling
the door shut behind him. Alysia, already in the driver's seat looked
over at him. "Ready for a new life kid?"
He looked over and put on a weak smile. "I better be."
Alysia looked back to the road and said, "Let's get a move on then."
They started down the road and Chase chanced a look back, seeing Tricia
waving goodbye. He returned the wave and put on a smile in case she
could still see him.
They rode in silence for a while, listening to an old Clash album. It
was nearly an hour before Chase pulled together the nerve to reach over
and turn down the stereo. "So. I guess I am a mutant."
Alysia nodded, keeping her eyes on the road. "Looks that way squirt.
You doing okay?"
Chase paused for a second and said, "I don't know Lili. This is a lot
to take. I mean you hear a lot of stuff about them... us I guess. Plus
I think I am." He trailed off.
Alysia interrupted, "Still changing. Yeah. I can tell. Your hair is a
wreck and what have you lost like 40 pounds?"
"Pretty close," he confessed. "And yeah, I am changing. I don't know
what into though. I'm worried I am going to turn into some kind of
fr... something strange."
"Well, no sense worrying, you couldn't stop it anyway. And if you end
up deep in GSD, at least you will still have me and dad." She chanced a
look over at him and a smile. "We'll get a better idea once they do you
a profile."
"At least there is that," he sighed.
"Even in the worst case, you'll make it through," she said, though she
was actively ignoring the possibility of a burnout.
"I hope so." He paused for several seconds, looking out the window.
"What's it like? Being a mutant?"
"Well you are about to find out." She let out a brief laugh. "It's not
so bad honestly. I mean, I am lucky with my looks relatively unchanged
but even the real GSD cases can do okay. Hell, I even go to a special
school. I only mention it because I am pretty sure you will be joining
me there next month."
Chase looked back at her. "Yeah? That could be cool, at least I know I
won't get mutant-bashed there. Listen, Alysia. I have to say thanks for
taking up for me. I haven't heard that stuff about the MCO before but I
am guessing you know more than I do and arranging for me to live with
dad. I just. Thanks sis."
Alysia waited for a second, then responded "No worries bro. I always
have your back. Have you noticed anything strange yet? You said you
heard us across the house."
"Yeah, it was like you were right there in the room, I haven't gotten
it to happen again though. Um... What's your thing? If that's cool to
ask?"
She laughed. "Yeah, It is kind of the first question usually. My power
is kind of embarrassing honestly. I make people tired."
He raised an eyebrow and asked. "Seriously? You are so boring it's a
superpower?"
She punched him in the arm without looking away from the road.
"Asshole. I can stimulate production of a couple of chemicals in the
brain to make people tired. Just drowsy at first but groggy in maybe a
minute and asleep within 5."
He smiled at her. "What's your code name? Warm milk? Chemistry
lecture?"
She hesitated. "... It's Lullaby."
He burst into laughter which continued for several seconds, but the
time it stopped tears were running down his face and his sides were
aching. He finally trailed off and wiped his eyes.
She waited for him to finish and said, "You are an asshole squirt, but
I love you anyway."
He replied, gasping to recover but obviously sincere, "Me too sis."
They sat in silence for a while, watching the world go by.
Chapter 4 - Reunions
They took the straight shot from Indiana to South Carolina, aside from
2 stops for food and a couple of rest stops along the way. Almost 12
hours later, the cavalier pulled into the driveway of a fairly large
house. A man in a Rush T-shirt sat at a table outside the house looking
at a laptop, Chase's father Tom. He looked up as the car came closer
and closed the laptop. He rose from the table as the car pulled close
to the house and walked toward the driveway.
The car came to a stop and Chase and Alysia got out. They spent several
seconds stretching their muscles. The man got close and called out,
"Hey kids, how was the drive?"
Alysia replied, "Fine dad, long but fine." She started messaging her
butt. "My ass is asleep."
Their dad replied, used to such comments, "Thanks for the update." He
walked past Alysia and grabbed Chase in a manly hug. After breaking the
hug, he said, "Hey son, how are you holding up?"
Chase paused for a second. He hadn't actually thought about it. "I
think okay. Honestly, everything is happing so fast, it's hard to
tell."
His dad nodded walking over to grab Alysia in a quick hug. After the
hug, he turned back to Chase. "Yeah kid, you ... are going through some
changes. I would never have recognized you if I didn't know."
Chase ran a hand through his hair, a nervous habit. "I don't recognize
me and I'm betting it will keep going."
His dad nodded. "Well, come on you two. Let's unload this monster and
get you settled in Chase. We have a couple of hours before your power
testing." As if to emphasize a point, he grabbed a box from the back
seat.
"Awesome", Chase said, unenthusiastically. Part of him was dying to
know, but he also dreaded finding out he was going to be some kind of
monster. It still seemed like a dream and some kind of analysis only
felt like it would make it all real.
Chase and Alysia both grabbed boxes and walked after their father and
into the large house. Their father did well for himself as one of the
owners of a software design company. It was nothing big name but he had
30 or so employees and never worried about upcoming bills. They walked
through the house and Chase got a pang of sadness as he walked past a
recent picture of himself. At the end of a hall, they walk into the
fairly large, but sparsely appointed room that Chase used when he
visited and started unpacking.
The process of unloading the car and preliminary unpacking went pretty
quickly with the three of them working together and they were finished
and they got most of the unpacking done before they needed to leave.
The three of them piled in to the father's Jeep and backed out of the
driveway. Alysia, from the back seat, placed a reassuring hand on
Chase's shoulder as they started to go down the road and Chase focused
on trying to calm down. It was less than 5 minutes before the Jeep
pulled in to a familiar house.
Chase looked at his dad, puzzled. "Is Uncle Bobby coming?"
His father shook his head in response. Alysia piped up from the back
seat, "Not exactly."
Chase was still confused but just shrugged his shoulders and left the
car. They waked down the Japanese garden styled walkway which lead to
the door of his uncle Bobby's house and knocked twice. After a few
seconds, the door is opened by a man in an open Hawiian shirt, Chase's
uncle Bobby. He looks at the group. "Oh hey everybody, come on in,
Chase, you are looking thin man, give that extra weight to your dad?"
Tom punched Bobby in the arm lightly.
Bobby turned and escorted them through the house and down the stairs to
the furnished basement. When they were all down there, Bobby put his
hand on a nondescript section of wall. This elicited a series of beeps
and a section of wall fell down, revealing a huge room that looked like
some kind of lab.
Chase couldn't help but exclaim, "What the fuck?!"
Alysia let out a giggle. Bobby turned to him and said, "Did they not
tell you?" He turned to Tom and said, "You can't just surprise an
emerging mutant, you never know what'll happen assface."
Chapter 5 - Under the Microscope
Chase was still in shock as he wondered into the massive room. He
looked around, seeing the machines covering the walls and some
scattered around the room. He looked finally to his uncle. "What the
hell man?"
Bobby said in a relaxed manner, "I am a mutant too man. Nothing flashy
but I am a divisor and gadgeteer. You know, the machine dudes. I did
the hero thing for a while but the whole thing was just too...
aggressive. Ya dig? Now I make a little scratch on the side doing power
testing." Chase just nodded unable to articulate a response in the fact
of the thought of his stoner uncle Bobby fighting crime. Bobby pointed
to a couch in the game room. "Aly and assface. Park it on the couch.
Watch some T.V. and we will call if we need you." Alysia and Tom sat as
directed, though they rolled their eyes in unison as they did.
Bobby walked to a table nearby and grabbed some sort of gun. He placed
it against the meat of Chase's left forearm and squeezed the trigger.
When he moved the gun, there was some kind of sensor pad on his arm.
Bobby quickly repeated the process on Chase's shoulder, other arm,
other shoulder, neck, chest, and back moving clothing out of the way as
needed. In less than a minute, Chase was covered in an array of sensor
pads. Bobby tossed the gun casually back on the table and the guided
Chase toward a Sealable chamber the size of a small room. Bobby turned
to Chase. "Okay, we will start with the Q and A." He grabbed a clip
board and a pen off the side of the chamber.
Bobby looked at the clipboard. "Obviously you are smaller and your eyes
have changed, anything else?"
Chase shook his head. "Nah."
Bobby looks up at Chase. "Still shrinking?"
Chase nodded slightly. "Yep. But I think it is slowing down."
Bobby made a quick note on the chart and said, "Awesome. That's great.
What have you noticed power wise, if anything?"
Chase thought for a second. "Uh... nothing really. I heard some stuff
from across the house once but I can't control it."
Bobby nodded and made another note. "Okay, cool. Your dad already gave
me most of your medical history so I can skip most of this crap ...
bum... bum ... bum... Ah!"
"Have you noticed any changes in your usual medical state aside from
the size?" Bobby asked and looked back at Chase.
Chase responded, "My hair too, but that's it."
Bobby placed a hand on Chase's shoulder. "Have you felt any
overwhelming urges to murder someone or commit major property crime?
You can tell me little dude."
"Uh... No?" Chase said, unsure why he asked.
Bobby nodded. "Awesome. Now the fun part. Step in." He motioned to the
Chamber.
Chase complied and entered. He noted that it appeared empty when the
door closes and sealed itself.
He heard Bobby's voice through a speaker concealed in the chamber.
"Alright, this thing is my baby. I call it the Standard Exposure
Variable Intensity Chamber or SEVIC. This baby will expose you a
different energies in slowly modulating intensities and the sensors
will tell the computers when you are on the verge of a cell reaction to
the energy and shut down that signal. We will go one at a time and fair
warning, this will sting."
Chase said, "Okay. Let's do it." There was a pause. "Wait! How is that
fair warning?"
The light in the room started to get brighter and reached a blinding
intensity before suddenly turning back to a reasonable level. Then
nothing happened for several seconds. Chase yelled, "Uh... I think it's
busted Unc."
After a second, the voice from the speaker responded. "Nah, little
dude. It's just that the radiation arrays are usually invisible."
Chase nodded. "Oh, okay. Wait... Radiation!?"
A laugh came over the speaker.
Suddenly, Chase started to hear a low, very slight tone. It got louder
and deeper over time, getting to normal speaking level and building. He
started to feel a pleasant tingle all over as the sound built, but no
pain in his ears. "Woah, that feels weird." It got louder and louder,
the pleasant tingling getting even stronger and more pleasant as it
built. It maintained the high volume for several seconds before a
buzzer sounds and it stops. The pleasant tingle continued, like his
body had charged up the feeling.
Chase had the time to say, "What the..." before an arc of electricity
hit him, leading him to cry out in surprise. There were several more
energy based indignities over the next few minutes.
The door opened up to reveal Bobby smiling. "We got some solid data
little dude. Totally worth it."
Chase rolled his eyes. "Easy for you to say."
Several other tests follow at various stations around the lab. So far
as he could tell, he couldn't project or manifest anything, appeared to
be "Slightly invulnerable" which Chase pointed out seemed stupid, had
no apparent psychic or magical ability, and was "clearly retarded" when
it came to tech. Chase thought this last was thoroughly unfair. Who was
Bobby to say that was supposed to be a raygun and not a rad sculpture?
Fascist.
The real surprise came when Chase hit the physical tests. He topped 50
Miles Per Hour on a treadmill and above baseline human potential for
reflexes and agility. The tingle from the chamber began fading during
the physical tests, but Chase didn't say anything since he figured the
scanners would pick it up. He took his place on a Hydraulic strength
tester and began doing lists. He was just pushing 600 over his head
when he heard Bobby yell "Oh shit!" Bobby hit a button on his wrist and
Chase felt the machine get extremely light as the pressure was
released.
Chase raised an eyebrow questioningly to his Uncle but said nothing.
Bobby said, "Okay we are done. Get a water and have a seat with your
family. I will check some data and get a report."
Chase nodded and headed to the couch with his family. They are watching
an episode of Survivorman. He plopped down heavily on an open seat and
started watching along. Only a few minutes passed before Bobby walked
out of the lab, the massive doors closing behind him and the wall once
again looking like any other basement.
The three on the couch looked up. Tom spoke first. "What's the skinny
bro?"
Bobby paused for a second and grabbed a tablet off the normal looking
computer desk. He opened it and pressed a few buttons. "Okay, well it
looks like you are an exemplar but we figured that, based on your
physical results you are a solid 3 and that is where I will list it,
but you have the potential to amp that up. Which brings me to my next
point. Your body is doing some kind of metabolizing of sound. You hit
the max of that chamber with no issues and that was enough to make an
average person permanently deaf. From my readouts, you will get amped
physically by intense sounds, but it won't last too long. I suspect it
had mostly worn off by the time we tested your body so we don't know
your limit on that end."
Chase nodded on the last bit, thinking of the tingling.
Bobby went on, not taking note of the nod. "This sort of metabolizing
might eventually crop up a warp or energizer trait, but nothing yet.
That's it power wise, so I am just putting you on as an exemplar 3 and
calling it a day."
Chase nodded. "Cool."
Alysia said, "Boring as always Squirt."
Their dad sat silent.
Bobby started again. "And the exemplar thing, you are clearly changing
but it is slowing down. Regenerators move faster changing but you may
not be all the way done for 5 or 6 months. I noticed pushing your
muscles was costing you mass so I would recommend taking it easy of you
want to delay the change as much as possible. That's why I called the
strength test early. It cost you a pound before I caught it."
Chase nodded. "I can do that. I mean I want to stay me as much as I can
right."
Alysia piped up. "Though of a codename yet bro?"
Chase looked at her. "Kinda, What do you think of Bass?"
Alysia nodded. "I like it. You blend into the background and get no
respect."
He gave her a look and she stuck her tongue out at him.
Bobby nodded. "I think that may be free too. But I will tag it as that
for now. You can always change it later." He pushed a button on a
device at his wrist and a nearby printer spit out an ID. "There is one
thing I need to say though... It's about the changing."
Everyone else went still and silent. Chase was certain he was about to
be told he is going to turn into a monster.
Bobby turned the tablet around revealing some kind of chart. "This is
your DNA profile." He made a motion on the screen and it zoomed in.
He continued. "This is one pair. See how this one is X shaped?" He
pointed to one of the chromosomes. He didn't wait for an answer. "And
see how this one is sort of the same but with one really short leg?"
Alysia let out a gasp. Tom tensed up. Chase had no idea where it is
going and just looked somewhat confused.
Bobby continued. "That shouldn't have that leg. It is short because it
is still growing that leg So... your Y chromosomes are changing into
X's meaning you are turning into a girl." He let that sink in
You could hear a pin drop. Alysia put a reassuring hand on her
brother's shoulder. Tom stroked his chin thoughtfully. Bobby looked
almost in shame at Chase.
Chase let the silence sit for a second then said, "Well. Shit."
Chapter 6 - Aftermath
There was minimal conversation before everyone left the basement. Tom,
Chase, and Alysia made their way back to the car in silence. Tom
started the car and pulled out, the car still covered in the shocked
silence. It was a couple of minutes before Chase spoke about the issue
at the forefront of his mind. "Does mom know about Bobby? Was he the
reason everything... turned?"
Tom kept his eyes on the road and considered the question. "She doesn't
know. But he is probably the reason honestly. When you kids were what,
5 or 6, your mom started letting a lot of that anti mutant media bleed
in to her. It got to the point when she was saying some pretty hateful
stuff." He let out a sigh. "At first, she would be careful or lay off
if I asked, but when she started accusing me of being soft on mutants,
I had to get out. I mean, Bobby has been my best friend since I was
born. It wasn't right."
Chase said, "Does she really hate us so much?"
Tom shook his head. "No. I don't think she hates mutants. She's not
about to sign up for humanity first, but I think she is scared and
ignorant. That wouldn't be an issue honestly, but she refused to learn
different."
The silence returned to the car for the rest of the trip. They pulled
back in to the driveway of Tom's house and he said, "I need to go in to
the office to take care of some stuff. You two going to be able to take
care of yourselves?"
Alysia nodded. "We'll be fine. Go. Be businessesey."
Chase nodded silent assent.
Chase and Alysia exited the car and waved to their father as he pulled
away. They turned and walked toward the house, Alysia taking the time
to pull her keys out and unlock the door. As they shut the door behind
them, Alysia looked to Chase. "How you holding up Squirt?"
Chase looked her in the eye. "I think I am okay. I feel like I am under
the gun a little, just like waiting until I'm gone and some girl is
gonna be left." He shook his head again.
Alysia nodded with understanding and sympathy. "I know it is scary but
it is still going to be you when you are done you know. I mean your
body will be different but you will still be you up top." She tapped
gently on his head.
Chase smiled. "I hope so."
Alysia smiled back. "I promise."
They fell silent at that and after a second, walked to the living room
and flipped on the television. They settled on watching some DVR'd
episodes of Archer. It was a nice distraction for Chase and Alysia
wanted to let him relax a bit. About half way through the second
episode she couldn't take it anymore and said, "Have you thought about
what to call yourself?"
Chase looked at he, confused. "Yeah, Bass, like it says on the ID."
Alysia shook her head. "No, you asshole. Your name. Chase probably
isn't going to work when you look like a girl."
Chase replied sarcastically, "Unless they think it's a code name."
Alysia threw a stereo remote at him. "Seriously, you may want to think
about it. "
Chase wiped the smirk from his face and honestly answers. "I will, but
I am not ready yet."
Alysia paused briefly. "And look, I know this is going to be
uncomfortable but I have to put it out there. There is a lot of stuff
to being a girl that you aren't going to know. I mean not just social
stuff, that too, but like body stuff."
Chase tried to interrupt. "Oh god Alysia don't..."
Alysia kept right on talking. "No!. This is important. There is shit
you don't know and you will need to. It's not like mom is gonna give
you the talk so I want to make sure you are ready. "
Chase shook his head. "If I pick a name will you stop taking about
this?"
Alysia nodded. "It'll buy you 2 weeks."
Chase said, "Fine, I'll take Amy for now but you can't use it yet."
Alysia smirked. "Deal."
The business being settled, they sat watching television for several
hours until their father returned. Tom entered the house and saw them
planted on the couch. "You two seem to have had a real productive day."
Chase gave the okay hand signal. Alysia gave Tom a thumbs up. Tom
continued talking. "Chase, I was thinking that since you are going to
be changing over time you might have a rough time in a normal school.
Alysia has been attending a school specifically for mutant kids and I
think it might be a good idea for you to think about it. I picked up
and application that you can fill out over..."
Chase interrupted, "I'm in."
Tom was surprised. "Really? Don't you want to think about it."
Chase replied. "Nah, Alysia already brought it up and I figured I would
bet better off with mutant kids, especially while I was still changing.
Pass it over big man." He held a hand up over the couch open, so his
dad had a target.
Tom walked over and handed the application and a pen off to Chase.
"Good work Alysia. Great foresight."
Alysia gave Tom another thumbs up in response.
Chapter 7 - Time marches on
Chase stepped on the bathroom scale. 137 again. This was the third
straight day. He glanced at the height chart by the nearby mirror and
saw that he was still around 5'6. This was a comforting sight. As far
as he could tell, he had finally stopped losing height and mass. It was
nice to know that he wasn't going to just fade away. Then a wave of
dread hit him. Now that he was done shrinking, he was bound to start
changing.
Chase examined himself in the mirror and as always marveled at the
changes he had been through in the month and a half since moving in
with his father. In addition to the lost height, his formerly massive
muscles had faded away into ghosts of their former selves. They were
still plain in the mirror, but it was the tone of a gymnast rather than
the body builder's muscle that he used to have. He noticed that the
changes seemed to have already started in slight ways. Chase hadn't
saved in 3 days and his chin was smooth as when he was a little kid.
"Damn..." he said, wondering and dreading what he was becoming.
He pulled on a t-shirt and jeans, just slightly baggy and one of the
cheap temporary sets he had bought to help bridge the gap until he
stabilized. He glanced around the half packed room and smiled at the
thought they he was going to be around a bunch of kids that had the
same experiences.
He rushed down the hall to the kitchen where Alysia was already waiting
for him. "Bout time Chase. I've been waiting and the meters running."
Chase looked at her and replied wryly, "I'm not paying you. Come on
ass."
They headed out and piled into Alysia's car, which was significantly
cleaner than when it carried him here from Indiana. Alysia drove them,
a transplants album playing through the speakers, filling Chase with a
pleasant tingle as his body took in the sound. It was about 20 minutes
to the open air mall where they intended to spend the day. They didn't
notice the black sedan following several cars behind them.
Alysia and Chase parked in the spacious lot near the mall. They had
just gotten to the courtyard near the entrance when they heard a
strange voice call from behind. "Alysia Price, We have a message for
your uncle."
Chase and Alysia turned together and were confused and stunned by what
they saw. It looked like three men cosplaying as villains from a 1990's
cartoon show. The smallest of the three has long metal claws. The
medium sized one had several barrels ominously sticking from various
joints, and the largest appeared to be almost entirely cybernetic and
larger than Chase had been at his full size.
The one covered in weapon barrels spoke, and they recognized his voice
as the one that called to them, "You can't retire from Upgrade's shit
list!"
The one with the claws said, "Don't fight us and we will make sure you
live."
Alysia cried, "Oh, Shit." And dove for cover.
The large one looked at Chase and said, "Walk away dude, you don't need
to be here."
Chase smiled and shook his head. "Sorry bro. I'm involved."
The guy with the claws made a move then, attempting to come at Chase
from the side. The man wasn't particularly fast and was no match for
Chase's enhanced reflexes as Chase saw the coming easily. He avoided
the claw swipe, though it did pretty much destroy his shirt, before
delivering an uppercut cleanly to the man's unprotected chin, knocking
him very unconscious.
A mechanical laugh came from the big man who then came at Chase in
slow, lumbering steps before swinging a massive fist at him. Chase
dodged it, but the metal surface of the fist hit a decorative brick
planter, and knocked a small area into powder. Chase started to get
nervous then. He had suckerpunched the first guy, but this one would be
more aware and looked more dangerous. Plus he still had a buddy.
Since it looked like the other guy might shoot something, Chase stepped
in tight to the big guy to cut the shooter's lines of fire, but then
was devoted to dodging and looking for an opening on the man's armored
body. He was able to get a glancing strike at the man's unprotected
underarm, but of course, this did little damage. This went on for some
time, and Chase realized that he couldn't keep up forever and he was
already pushing himself. He caught brief glances of the guy with the
gun barrels shooting toward where Alysia was hiding.
Soon, he noted that the guy with the gun barrels was getting less and
less accurate as time went on and seemed to be wavering on his feet.
That was when he realized that Alysia was using her powers. He smiled
and nodded, but that brief distraction was enough for the big man to
get close enough with a shot that Chase was forced to the ground. As
the big man raised a fist to turn Chase into a fine paste, the gun guy
yelled. "I'm done with you bitch. Ear protection!"
The big man took a split second to flip a switch on his helmet, which
gave Chase the time to stand and get ready to dodge. The man with the
gun barrels hit a button and something that looked like a radar dish
came up from his shoulder. After a brief delay, it began to put out an
intense noise which would be extremely painful and kept getting louder.
The mall patrons who hadn't already run inside somewhere clutched their
ears and screamed and cracks began to appear on the windows nearby.
Anybody nearby without ear protection would be pretty thoroughly
disabled. Anyone of course except Chase.
Chase felt power flow through him, not just the normal tingle from loud
sounds but a full on rush of sensation. He gasped in surprise and
pleasure and then it seemed like the world changed. It was like
everything was moving in slow motion. As the tone faded, the huge man
took another swing at Chase, thinking he would be too stunned to dodge.
Chase struck out, his fist clamming into the oncoming metal fist. This
was followed by the screech of rending metal as Chase's fist passed
through the man's now obviously mechanical arm with almost no
resistance. The large man let out a screech and started to flail as he
apparently felt some kind of pain from the damage and he was in no
condition to keep fighting.
The man with the barrels had started to move toward the likely disabled
Alysia so he could take a clean shot. He barely made it three steps
before chase had moved to intercept. "Boy did you bring the wrong toy
to this party," Chase said before grabbing a battery pack that appeared
to go to the man's weapons and tearing it off, leaving sparking wires
behind. Chase then grabbed the confused and frightened man by the back
of his BDU vest and gently choked him unconscious with it.
The world sped up again, though Chase could feel he was still
overflowing with energy. He moved to where Alysia had taken cover and
found her on the floor, blood trailing from one ear. She was somewhat
punch drunk and took a look at Chase before saying, "Hey Squirt, I can
see your tits."
Chase, confused, looked down. He saw, much to his surprise, small, pert
breasts plainly visible through his slashed shirt. As the sound of
police siren's approached, Chase covered his breasts with his hands and
yelled, "Damn it!"
Chapter 8- Fallout
As the siren's got closer, Chase shifted his arms so his left hand
covered his new assets from view and pulled out his phone. He uses his
right hand to send a text to his uncle saying. "Hey Bobby some dudes
came after Alysia to send a message from somebody named Upgrade. The
cops are on the way. We could probably use an adult."
The reply came shortly after. "Son of a bitch. On my way."
Chase let out a sigh of relief, then with a strike of insight replied
to Bobby, "Bring an extra shirt."
Alexis was just starting to come around by the time the cops arrived in
earnest. Some well-equipped officers restrained the three dudes that
Chase had fought. Several other officers began interviewing witnesses,
several of which pointed in Chase's direction. Chase considered his
options and decided to just cooperate. They were clearly in the right
and these were just locals so this would probably be fine.
Several cops slowly circled Chase and Alysia. One of them called out,
"Please put your hands on your head."
Chase let out an angry sigh but complied, placing his hands on his head
and allowing his destroyed shirt to fall open. Another officer called
out, "Go ahead and cover yourself Ma'am but keep your hands where we
can see them."
Chase let out another sigh at being called Ma'am, but managed to keep
his cool as he crossed his arms over his chest.
As the officers got closer, one of them demanded to see Chase's
identification. Chase shifted his arms so one was covering his whole
chest and said, "Yeah, sure. I am reaching for my wallet." He reached
his free hand into his pocket and pulled out his wallet. He used his
teeth to open it and pull out his Mutant ID. The officer approached and
took the ID then took several steps back and began talking on the
radio. Chase noticed that he could clearly hear the officer and the
responses over the radio as the dispatch officer ran a background
check. Once the officer received a reply that I was registered and had
no criminal record he approached again and handed Chase his ID back.
The officer informed Chase that he could put the ID away and relax.
"Why don't you tell me what happened here Miss ... Bass?"
Chase shook his head. "These assholes rolled up on us and attacked my
sister. I stepped up and tried to help her."
The officer took out a notebook and began taking notes. "So you are
saying that these men attempted to attack someone while in your
presence and you intervened for public safety?"
Chase raised an eyebrow and looked at the officer confused. "I ...
think that is what I am saying?"
The cop nodded and looked to Alysia who now appeared to be conscious,
but was still on the ground. "Is that true Ma'am?"
Alysia blinked several times, trying to clear her head still then
nodded. "Yeah, that's what happened. I think they said they were
working for somebody named Upgrade."
The officer made a few more notes. "That makes sense. He causes trouble
around here sometimes and he has been running pretty wild since Tubular
retired."
Bobby's voice came from behind Chase that said, "He caused quite a bit
of trouble before I retired if you remember." Bobby walked up to Chase
and handed him a crumpled up t-shirt. Bobby looked at the officer and
said, "Hey John."
The officer looked at Bobby. "Hey man. You know these two."
Bobby nodded. "Yeah, they are my brother's kids."
"Ah," the cop said. "Well that explains it then I guess. Glad nobody
was hurt."
Chase remained silent despite thinking that the cop had a pretty
strange definition of hurt since he kind of shattered the bug guy's
arm. He slipped on the shirt, which was extremely oversized, but at
least covered him. After it was on he looked down and saw that it had a
Grateful dead logo but was otherwise plain.
The cop gave a signal to the officers encircling them. The other
officers broke rank and headed off to other business at the scene. He
then said, "Listen Bobby, I think this will all shake out fine and I
can always find you so go ahead and tell the kids that they are free to
go."
Bobby gave the cop a handshake and said, "Thanks man. Stay safe out
there."
The officer just nodded and walked away, leaving Chase and his family
behind. Chase reached down and helped Alysia to her feet. She wobbled a
bit but found her balance after a few seconds. She said, "Nice moves
bro."
Chase shrugged his shoulders and didn't respond.
Bobby pulled a small device out of his backpack and ran it over Alysia
then Case. "He looked at the screen, then put it away. "Okay, you
little dudes should be fine. I didn't pick up any Major internal bleeds
so you should not be too busted up."
Chase nods. "Yeah, I feel fine. And Alysia just took a hit from some
kind of sonic thing, but it was pretty dispersed."
Alysia nods. "Yeah, I'm solid, it just screwed with my balance for a
bit.
Bobby said, "That's great. I'm glad you two are okay. I would recommend
not saying anything to your dad about this. He worried enough about me
when I was doing that superhero stuff, I can't imagine what he would do
when he heard about this."
Alysia and Chase nod in unison. "Okay, I will let you kids get back to
your shopping. You... may want to look into some new clothes Chase."
Chase said, "Yeah, I haven't seen the extent but I noticed that fight
cost me some time."
Bobby patted Chase on the shoulder a few times. "It will work out for
the best. I can tell." Then he gave Chase a broad, reassuring smile.
Chase felt batter at that and waved goodbye. Bobby turned and headed
back to his car.
There was a pregnant silence for several moments before Alysia piped
up. "Well, this shopping trip just got a lot more involved, sis."
Chase looked at her. "Come on, don't get started with that. I told you
I am not..."
Alysia interrupted, "Have you seen yourself?"
Chase said, "No but I mean I don't feel any different."
Alysia pulled Chase toward a nearby store window and Chase was stunned
when he saw his reflection. The first thing he noticed were the
breasts, which were not large, but were plainly obvious even under the
baggy shirt. The real shock came when he came to his face. "No way." He
said quietly. He saw that his features had softened greatly, his
formerly masculine face now clearly feminine. Between his small body,
long hair, breasts, and feminine face he now appeared even at a focused
examination to be a young and pretty, if somewhat butch, young woman.
"Fuck me."
Alysia piped up. "You may want to be careful with that one."
Chase shook his head. "I am not ready for this."
Alysia responded, "Well, you better get there because you are going to
be a girl to everyone you see. Might be time to start going by Amy
sis."
Chase sighed deeply. "Yeah, I think you may be right."
Alysia wrapped Chase in a hug and held it for several seconds. Chase
said, "Okay, let's get this over with. I leave myself in your capable
hands."
Alysia let go of Chase and smiled. "Don't worry. You need clothes, but
I will help you keep it in your style."
Over the next several hours, Alysia helped Chase select a wide variety
of clothing that wasn't overly objectionable to him. Their father had
sent then with a credit card expressly to get Chase new clothes so
money wasn't going to be an issue and by keeping to the punk aesthetic
helped keep him calm about it. The car was loaded to nearly overflowing
with bags, anything from underwear to a plaid dress that Alysia begged
Chase to buy. When it was all loaded, they got in the car and headed
for home.
As they drove home, Chase looked to Alysia and said, "Thanks for your
help Lili, I really appreciate it. This isn't easy for me."
Alysia smiled. "I know, but I will help you in any way I can. You are
my sister and I am going to be there for you Amy."
Chapter 9 - Dazed and confused
The next month went by quickly for Chase. He saw some slight changes,
most notably his voice getting higher, but overall, he wasn't too far
off from where he was the month before. He was certain that this was
due to his careful avoidance of using his powers. His bags were waiting
by the door to go with him to his new school. He was wearing a tight
sports bra to keep his new breasts, which he had since learned are on
the small side of B, under control. Over this, he had on a tight
fitting Clash shirt.
He frowned sourly at how his breasts still showed and ultimately
decided to throw on a biker jacket. Satisfied with how it looks, he
pulled his long, 2 tone hair back into a ponytail. He walked out the
door, grabbing two large duffel bags on his way out. He met his dad in
the front yard. He tossed his bags into the rear of the open top jeep
and swung into the car. They made idle chit chat on the short ride to
the bus station, but Chase was uncharacteristically quiet. He had
really gotten used to having his dad around and was already a little
homesick. He consoled himself with the fact that he would meet Alysia
at the school again soon.
When they got to the station, the bus was already there, so he quickly
gave his dad a hug and promised to call before grabbing his bags and
walking onto the bus. He handed his ticket to the driver and walked to
the back of the mostly empty bus before plopping down in a seat. He
pulled out his MP3 player and oversized headphones, settling the phones
around his neck rather than on his ears. He hit play and heard the
music clearly even though the volume was fairly low and the phones were
nowhere near his ears. He had starting doing this a couple of weeks
before to get better at what he had started calling body listening.
He listened to his massive music collection on shuffle as he watched
the world go by. The ride long, and made longer by the multiple stops
along the way. By the time the bus pulled in to Dunwhich, he was close
to going insane. The last ten minutes of the trip seemed to go on for
an eternity, but eventually the bus pulled in to a stop in front of the
travel depot. Chase stood up and snatched his duffel bags as he
practically ran off the bus. He didn't look back, but clearly heard two
people get off the bus behind him.
He made his way in to the station to wait for the vans as he had been
instructed. He went to talk to the attendant at the counter and was
informed that it would be almost 2 hours before the vans were due, but
that they had a reception set up it a waiting room. Chase thanked the
guy and walked toward the waiting room, placing his bags on a trolley
marked for academy luggage. He walked in to the waiting area that was
empty of people, but filled with food.
He made a plate of food and had just set down on a couch when he heard
two people walking up and one cried, "Oh, thank you god, another
twink."
Chase said, "Huh?" and looked up to see an obviously effeminate boy
walking towards him and an attractive blonde girl coming behind. They
looked familiar.
The boy approached quickly and threw his arms around a very surprised
Chase. He said, "I was so sure that I was going to be alone here and
the first person I see is another Femme boy."
Chase meekly tried to respond, still shocked, "I ... Uh... I'm not..."
At the sound of Chase's voice, a look of realization came over the
girl's face. She quickly leaned in and whispered to the effeminate boy.
Chase clearly heard her tell him that she was pretty sure that was a
girl.
The guy leaned back. "Oh, I'm so sorry hun. Way to make a first
impression right? Anyway, I'm William Fisher, Will if you must. It's a
pleasure to meet you."
Chase shook his head. "No problem dude. I'm Ch..." Chase had been
dreading this moment for a long time and he tossed things over in his
head. Clearly he wasn't passing as well as he thought and it was only a
matter of time anyway. He decided to screw it and make the jump. "I'm
Amy." He reached out and took Will's hand. He had already decided he
would call the boy Will by that point.
The blonde girl spoke up and gave Chase a wave and a friendly smile.
"Hi Amy. I'm Kristen. Kristen Potts. It's nice to meet you. I saw you
on the bus and wondered if you were going to Whately too." At this
point, the newly labeled Amy recognized them as the two from the bus
had gotten on back in Boston.
Amy responded, with a smile of his own, "Nice to meet you too, and yeah
I'm set to go to the school. Grab some food and take a seat. Looks like
we are going to be here a while. "
Will said, "You don't have to tell me twice," then made his way to the
table that held the fancier looking deserts.
Kristen sat down next to Amy. "Yeah, you would think they would
coordinate a little better."
Amy shrugged. "So, do you and Will know each other?"
Kristen shook her head. "Not before today, but we chatted up a storm on
the bus. He's a little stuffy but actually seems really sweet."
Amy nodded. "That's cool. So you two are... ya know... special right?"
Kristen got a horrified look on her face for a second, but then a look
of realization. "Oh... you mean mutants. Yeah, well I man, I am and I
am presuming Will is since he is going to school."
Will walked up at this point, carrying a plate of delicate looking
snacks. "I'm afraid so. Doomed to a life of ostracism or the closet,
and a mutant on top of it." He smiled at them, hoping for a positive
reaction to the joke.
Amy let out a chuckle and Kristen gave Will a halfhearted smile.
Will waited for someone else to talk, but seeing that he still had the
floor he asked. "So ladies... what do you do, I'm guessing it is
something since neither of you beautiful girls look like you are stuck
with GSD. Issues. I'll go first I suppose. I am ... a bit unique. I
have an instinctive sense of any physical activity. Basically I can use
a kind of ESP to master anything physical I try."
Amy said, "Woah. That's pretty awesome. I'm just an exemplar." He
shrugged. "And I'm not actually done changing yet so... I may end up as
one of those GSD kids in the end."
Will gave him a dismissive wave. "Nonsense honey. You are going to be
gorgeous. You'll be knocking those..." Will gave Amy an appraising
look. "...people who are romantically interested in you away with a
stick in no time."
Amy raised an eyebrow. He thought, 'Does this guy think I am a
lesbian?'
Kristen thought for a second and said, "I'm a shifter, but I can't
really control it."
Amy smiled at her. "Damn. I feel so boring."
The three of them got to know each other quite well over the next few
hours and Amy discovered that he actually really liked both of them.
This was surprising given Will's upper crusty vibe, but once you got
through the pretense he was an entertaining guy. He thought Kristen was
a really sweet girl, but just needed to come out of her shell a bit.
Other students trailed in until there were maybe 20 kids waiting. Amy
met a few others briefly but found himself sticking close to Kristen
and Will. At precisely 4:00 a stern looking Asian Woman came in and
quickly ushered them, in alphabetical order, onto the waiting vans.
Luckily, Kristen was sharing a seat with him and they chatted amicably
for the whole trip to Whateley.
Chapter 10- Welcome home
The bus pulled through the gate and Amy noted weird faceless gargoyles
flanking it. He was legitimately impressed by the grounds. The place
was beautiful. It looked strange being so empty though, like a ghost
town. He still wasn't quite sure why they were being brought in early
but he wasn't overthinking it.
They pulled up in front of a four story brick building. When he got off
the bus, he saw a plaque marking the building Poe Cottage. The kids
unloaded their bags and set them in the entryway before being led to a
common area in the Cottage. The stern looking Asian lady, Ms. Shugendo
apparently, walked to the front of the group and the kids slowly
quieted.
Ms. Shugendo spoke. "Welcome to Whateley Academy. The official opening
speech by the headmaster will be tomorrow with the rest of the school,
but we make a point to give a special talk for this group every year.
There is a reason that you were brought to the school a day ahead of
the rest. You all have something in common, aside from your mutations
that is, you all have what some would term alternative lifestyles. That
is you are gay, lesbian, transgender, or so aggressively bisexual that
it could cause an issue. Understand that there is no judgment. You
aren't being punished. Quite the opposite. We understand that people in
your position have significant difficulties even without factoring in
your mutations."
"There is a significant bias in most of the educational system. That is
why Poe Cottege is here. You need have no fear of being exposed to your
room mate or neighbor because they are in the same boat as you. We,
admire the fact that you were honest enough to list this on your
application, but we must now ask that you check that openness somewhat.
That prejudice is still here at the school among some and with the
powers of the students in play, there could be extreme problems if
there were to be an incident. Please keep the reason for Poe a closely
guarded secret and if you choode be open, please don't out any of your
cottage mates."
"There are two main reasons for us bringing you here a day early. In
addition to letting you get accustomed to the arrangement and the
campus, you being here a day early helps to let you all blend in to the
background a bit when your classmates arrive."
There was a brief Q and A but Amy didn't find any of the details
particularly interesting. Ms. Shugendo then introduced Ms. Horton, the
house mother for the cottage. Ms Horton gave a quick outline of the
house layout before handing the floor back.
Ms. Shugendo motioned to three people standing off to the side. "We are
now going to break you down into smaller groups so you are a little
easier to deal with. These are Jade Sinclair, Bunny Cormick, and
Brandon Fellows. They will be your student guides today and help you
all get settled in. Good luck and welcome."
The three people off to side each had a clip board and took turns
reading off names. Amy Price was called by a small Asian girl. Amy was
surprised, guess Alysia bugged dad long enough for him to call for an
update. Oh well. He made his way toward her with the rest of the group
but was curious why that group was so much smaller than the other 2,
and was the only one with both sexes, weird. There were only 4 of the
new kids, counting Amy. It was Kristen, a tall, lanky boy whose race
Amy couldn't discern, and a preppy looking white boy. This guide was
really young looking to.
Once they rounded up, the small Asian girl smiled and waved. "Hello
everyone and welcome to Whateley! I am Jade Sinclair, codename
Generator. Please follow me and I will show you to your rooms. We will
all be going to the same places eventually but they put the groups in
shifts so nothing gets too crazy. Grab your bags and follow me" She
lead them upstairs after they grabbed their bags.
"Bugs is going to take the," she whispered, "lesbians," before going
back to normal volume " around the main hall and Brandon, if he can
focus, will be showing the gay boys around the grounds. I will show you
to your rooms and let us have a private chat." She stopped and turned
to face them. "Since they sent them all separately, hopefully you have
figured out that you are all changelings." The group all look around at
each other, assessing and looks of recognition crossed their faces.
Jade giggled. "That's right you are all switching genders. Luckily, we
have two boys and two girls so the girls will be in rooms 205 and the
boys in 207."
She continued, "Before getting things packed away, we should take a
little time to chat. Why don't we all get to know each other a little.
I'll start. I am Jade and I am a divisor, but not an overly powerful
one. I was also born a boy. I am not really big on talking about my
past but if you are really curious I will talk to you later. Maybe I
shouldn't have started after all. Oh well." She pointed to the white
guy.
He perked up. "Uh... hey, I am Taylor Quint. I am a minor exemplar and
a package deal psychic. I am from a suburb of New York. I changed
pretty recently so I am still getting used to the whole thinking of
myself as a gay guy thing. I am kind of Geeky, collect comics. I dunno
I am bad at talking about myself."
Jade pointed to the tall guy. He nodded. "I am Jose Kinkaid, but just
Kinkaid please. I am mainly a Gadgeteer but I have a little exemplar so
I got the switch too. Single mother who loved Jesus more than me,
brother in a gang. Usual poor Chicago story. And for the record I am
now, very straight." He gives a wink toward Amy and Kristen and Amy
barely managed not to vomit.
Next Jade pointed to Kristen. She looks shyly around the group and
takes a deep breath. "I am Kristen Potts. I am a reactive shifter, so I
can't really control it well. I ... used to be a boy but" she put her
hand on her chest "This is me now." She smiled at that, clearly taking
comfort in the change and Jade smiled at her knowingly. " I am not that
exciting otherwise. I love to read and I am pretty in to fashion. And
since everyone is saying it, I am ... into both."
