"God dammit!" I yelled, anxiously putting my car into reverse, and
pushing the accelerator to the floor.
The tailpipe scraped hard against the rough asphalt as my car bottomed
out, causing sparks to fly and the neighbor's dog to bark wildly in the
window in front of me. "Fucking hell..." I mumbled. "That thing isn't
even a dog... it's a giant rat..." I thought to myself. I quickly
shifted the car into drive and tore away from my apartment complex.
This was supposed to be a great day, but it was starting out like a
wreck. I was going to have a meeting with my boss this morning about a
potential promotion, and I was competing with this jerk Johnson in the
cube next to me. I was exceptionally better at my job, but this guy's
family was friends with the company owner. But of course, on this of all
days, nothing was working out for me.
My hot water heater wasn't working, I cut myself shaving, and I slept
through my alarm. However, I wouldn't have overslept had I not been
arguing with my girlfriend until 2:00 AM. She went on for hours about
how she felt I wasn't at all a remotely adequate mate. I'd heard the
same complaints numerous times before, but I swear this time she was on
the brink of breaking it off with me. Of course, I merely capitulated to
all her accusations if only to get her to shut up.
Sometimes I wished I didn't have to deal with that bitch anymore...
Merging onto the highway, I was immediately met by the usual rush hour
traffic. Sighing heavily, I resigned myself to the fact that now I was
going to be exceedingly late for work. Flicking through the radio
stations, passing over the pop princess of the week, skipping over the
sports report, I settled on the news. The drone of the reporter would
have nearly put me to sleep had it not been for what I saw next.
Pulling up to the right me, a new "traffic buddy" had been assigned to
me, or "buddies" would have been more apt. A group of teenage girls, who
couldn't have been more than 18, were presumably all carpooling to school
in expensive car. Scoffing, I cynically thought, "Daddy must be pretty
well-off."
Being in my late 20's, I wasn't sure if I'd quite hit that age where
looking at teen girls was perverted or not, but I did regardless. I
watched them, almost synchronously dancing in their seats to what I
assumed was some popular song. So beautiful, hair bouncing, young
breasts jostling, and all smiling seeming so happy. They didn't seem to
have a care in the world.
It made me harken back to the days of high school where girls like that
would never have wanted anything to do with me. I wasn't as though I
unattractive. I just never really had the confidence to approach them.
Of course, if I tried now, I'd wind up in jail or on some news program.
Still watching them, I felt that much more perverted, but I couldn't keep
my eyes off this one blonde in the back driver's side seat. I watched
her smile with her sparkling blue eyes. It made me wonder what it would
be like to live a life like hers. No doubt she had some attractive,
confident boyfriend with whom she was having awkward but wildly-
passionate sex. It all seemed so carefree, so easy, but, then again, I
really knew nothing about her or what it was like to be a teenage girl.
All I could see was that she and her friends were all happy, and I
couldn't find a ray of light in my miserable life at all.
Eventually, their lane of traffic began to pick up speed, and that served
to release me from my reverie. Just as I was about to turn my head back
towards the burgundy SUV in front of me, I stole one more glance to the
right. I was startled when the blonde met my eyes. She just stared at
me for a moment with a look that almost knew my frustration with the day.
It felt like an eternity, like I was a deer in headlights that had just
realized it was over for me, but she gave me a cute smile with a wink and
blew a kiss at me. That was my saving grace.
I was dumbstruck, still looking to the right as the girls pulled away,
and I was assigned a new "buddy". A large, overweight guy, in his too-
tight T-shirt noticed me gazing that way and gave me a weird look before
flipping me off. I shook my head and returned to my trek forwards to the
office.
For the first time today, a smile came to my face. I thought of that
nameless blonde and her friends... but mostly the blonde. A sensation of
excitement coursed through my chest in a way that I hadn't felt in a
while. It was as though she was in my mind and taking up residence. It
was certainly a better image than my frumpy girlfriend, or a better
thought than the chewing out I was going to get for being late. But it
wasn't quite the same as a happy fantasy. No, it felt like something
more. Something I couldn't quite place. Kind of like an infatuation or
perhaps an obsession, but different.
It wasn't long before I'd arrived at the office. In reality, I was half
an hour later, but my thoughts of that girl made my trip feel
instantaneous. I knew I was already 20 minutes late for the meeting my
boss, so I practically ran from the parking lot, adrenaline pumping,
while trying to concoct some sort of excuse for being late. Dashing into
the building, and to the series of central elevators, I grabbed one and
started my ascent to the 14th floor.
Wiping the sweat from my brow, I noticed a familiar sensation was missing
from my left hand. A shock coursed through my body as I realized I'd
left my bag and my laptop in the car. Everything for my review meeting
with my boss was on that. Without it I was screwed, but it was already
far too late for me to head back to the car. "I'll just have to wing
it." I thought nervously.
Approaching the door to my boss's office, I knocked softly and heard a
bellowing, "Come in!". Sheepishly, I approached turned the handle and
went in. "You're late." stated my boss with a gruff and vaguely pissed
tone. I attempted to explain the situation, but he wanted to hear
nothing of it. Despite being late, he allowed me to sit down and present
my position as to why I should be promoted.
I fumbled and stumbled over my words, trying to remember my PowerPoint,
but eventually made it to the end. My bossed seemed somewhat intrigued
at the beginning, but that quickly turned to an annoyed and bored
attitude as displayed by his face. At the end, he simply gave me, "That
was a very nice presentation, Mr. Montgomery. I'll let you know by the
end of the day." I smirked and nodded as I exited the room, thanking him
for his time... and immediately dashed to the bathroom.
A sudden wave of panic and nausea had come over me, and I needed a
toilet. When getting into the men's room, I leaned over and placed my
hands on the marble counter around the numerous sinks. I looked at
myself in the mirror, and thought my hair looked a bit shaggy. "Guess
it's time for a haircut." I thought aloud. I turned on the water, and
cupped some into in my mouth with a hand, and the nausea seemed to
subside.
I still had another seven hours of work ahead of me, and had to get
through the day, if only to know my boss's decision. I went into a
stall, pulled my trousers and boxers down, and sat on the toilet seat. I
pulled out my cell phone and started looking around Pinterest while I
peed. Scrolling around the pages, I started to look at some of the
fashion posts. There was this really adorable outfit that some girl
posted with black biker jacket, lacy cream dress, black tights, gray
cable-knit over-the-knee socks, and heeled biker boots. "That's soooo
cute!" I thought to myself.
"What the hell?!" I said astounded with my thoughts. I shook my head out
of it, and realized I was sitting to pee. I quickly pulled up my boxers
and my pants together and got out of the bathroom. With a bit of
paranoia in my mind, I looked around before exiting. I quickly made my
way over to my cube and turned on my PC. I didn't know what to think of
what I had just done.
Johnson put his head around the cube wall and shouted, "Yo, bro! How'd
your meeting go?". I really just wanted to punch him, but I wasn't about
to risk my promotion over this bag of dicks. I simply replied, "Oh, hey
Mike. Yeah, went pretty well, I think," with an uneasiness in my voice.
How a guy like that could ever be considered for a promotion was beyond
me, but nepotism works like that.
"Awesome, man! Hope you get that promotion!" he emphatically said,
before tucking his head back around the corner. I returned to my
computer, logged in, and opened an Excel file that I had been working on
for a budget. About halfway working through the document, I thought,
"Ugh. This is hard! I hate math!" So I opened up my web browser.
Within minutes, I had tabs open to Pinterest, Lookbook, and Facebook. I
was looking through them, trying to find new outfits, chatting with
people, and looking up makeup tutorials on Youtube.
Hours passed by as I moved on to cute cat videos, and window shopping on
the Forever 21 website. When 4:00 rolled around, I was looking at this
sundress and gladiator heels that I thought might be nice for the summer.
My boss, came up from behind me, and cleared his throat to gain my
attention. Shocked, I quickly closed the window, and spun around in my
chair towards him.
"Montgomery! What the fuck are you doing?! I needed that budget an hour
ago!" he yelled. "Shit shit shit shit shit..." I said in my mind. I'd
totally blown it off, and I wasn't sure where the afternoon had gone.
The best I could muster was, "Uhm... my copy of Excel stopped working.
IT was supposed to come up and look at it." Not really accepting my
excuse, my boss made a finger gesture to come with him, and we walked to
his office.
"Brian, I'm not sure what to do with you..." stated my boss. It wasn't
often that he used my first name, so I was a bit thrown. "Your
presentation this morning was inadequate, your performance has been okay,
but not enough to grant you a promotion, and... " he droned on. I
stopped listening to him, thinking it wasn't anything I was interested
in, and my mind slipped back to that blonde from the traffic jam. I
thought of her smile, and her wink, and her airborne kiss.
By the end of the conversation, all I did was simply nod when my boss
stated, "...and that's why we're not offering you the promotion." I
grinned and stood, but then looked down at my fingernails and frowned. I
asked him, "Do you know where I can get a good manicure around here?". I
didn't really pay attention to his response, and just turned to walk out
of his office.
Proceeding to the elevator, I thought again of the cute blonde, her
friends, her little dance in the back seat of that car. I kept debating
in my mind her brief appearance. Did I want to fuck her, or... did I
want to be her? I debated the pros and cons in my mind and that's when I
heard my phone ring.
