Jason took himself off to Grandma's room, and sat down at her dressing
table. The surface was strewn with old makeup and perfume bottles, which
meant that the room always had a heavy, flowery, almost sickly scent in
the air. The mirror had dozens of small photos jammed into the frame,
and Jason looked closely at the faces, recognizing a few heartthrobs
from the 60's and 70's. Perhaps Kitty had been a bit of a catch when she
was younger. She certainly looked pretty glamorous in her photos from
that time. He made a few mental notes from the photos, and then started
to get undressed...
It was fast approaching 2pm, and the inspector would be arriving in just
over 30 minutes. As Jason readied himself for his transformation, he
thought about what he was doing. In all the prep he had done for his
college application, he had never done female impersonation. He'd seen
drag shows, but this was nothing like that. Despite the reliance on a
theatrical look, this would actually be an impersonation of a real
woman. He would have to convince the inspector that he was genuine. It
didn't have to be totally life-like, just close enough to be convincing.
Perhaps he could flirt a little? With a man? Jason shuddered at the
thought, and turned his mind back to the task in hand.
He had decided to shave his legs, since he knew he would have to wear a
dress and hose (torch singers never wore trousers - not glamorous
enough) but the outfit he had previously picked out for Peggy was a
little snug on him, and he could not get the red dress to look right,
even after strapping himself into the old fashioned foundation garments.
He was wearing an all-in-one girdle which held him in tightly from
shoulder to crotch, and had firm, pointy bra cups which he stuffed to a
generous size to fill out his bustline. He had attached some shiny tan
colored stockings to the garters on the girdle, having a terrible job to
get the seams straight. He had decided to add a short panty girdle which
he padded out to provide a convincing butt and hips, and now he felt
trussed up like a turkey. Because the red dress was a bad fit, he had
instead chosen a more simple black satin sleeveless shift dress, but
with a stunning, thigh length gold lam? jacket over the top. Once he was
in the clothes, he felt very constricted and had some difficulty getting
comfortable to sit and do his make-up.
As he started to select pots and paints for his face, he soon realized
he knew only one 'style' of makeup. He had been preparing for his Drama
degree by working with local amateur theatrical groups, and was getting
pretty good at makeup for the stage. Since that would be in keeping with
the character he was creating, he wasn't too worried, but he wondered
what the inspector might make of a mature woman dressed to the nines as
if she was about to hit the stage. And he didn't really know the
techniques needed for a more 'toned-down' everyday look.
He started by slathering his face with panstick, covering his eyebrows,
and using different colors to contour his cheeks. He powdered heavily
with setting powder, creating a dry, matt finish to his skin.
Satisfyingly, he thought it aged his face appropriately. He emphasized
his eyes with dramatic lines of kohl above and below, and then added
extravagant false lashes. Once he had drawn in new, feminine eyebrows,
he applied a bold streak of rouge to each cheek. He finished his lips in
a bright, scarlet red, Then he took a dark pencil, and started adding
some accents around his eyes and the corners of his mouth. The thick
makeup was very aging, and the addition of a few creases and wrinkles
added a few more years. By the time he was finished he looked like a
sad, painted old woman, using cosmetics to relive a long-passed time of
her life. It was just the look he was going for.
He added a jet-black wig which had bangs at the front and heaps of curls
on top, and as much blinging jewelry as he could find in his Grandma's
jewelry box, including clip-on earrings with long strands of diamante.
Rather than fiddle around with false nails, he decided to wear simple
white silk gloves, which would also hide his smooth-skinned, young man's
hands. Looking in the mirror, he thought he saw a resemblance to an
aging Liza Minnelli. He slipped on some low-heeled patent court shoes,
settled himself into the well-worn leather couch, and called to his mum,
using his best impersonation of Grandma's voice.
"Marion, Marion dear, would you please come here for a moment?"
Marion slowly popped her head round the door, apprehensive of what she
would see. Her hand flew to her lips.
"Oh, my!"
"Well, do I look ready for my close-up, dear?" Jason continued to use
the slightly high-pitched, gravelly tone he had chosen for his
impression.
"You look...quite, er, quite...oh, Jason, I'm so sorry about this."
"For God's sake, Mum, don't call me Jason. You need to always call me
Mother - OK?"
"Oh, oh yes, dear." Now that he had completed the transformation, Jason
realized that the riskiest part of their plan was not the disguise, but
the nervous way his mother was acting. She was obviously not at ease
with what was to come.
"Mum. Please, concentrate, You just have to relax, and go with the flow.
Remember I am your mother, that this is just a routine visit, and just
try and be agreeable, and cooperate as best you can. Above all, try to
be friendly and relaxed with this guy."
They had a few minutes before the inspector was due to arrive, so while
Jason settled into his surroundings, gathering picture frames around his
couch and making the room smell even more perfumy, Marion cleared away
his male clothes and started to prepare some tea. At two-thirty exactly,
the doorbell rang.
Jason remained in his Grandma's room while Marion opened the door. He
heard the words of greeting from down the hall, but couldn't quite work
out who was speaking. The voices got louder as they approached the room,
until he heard Marion announce
"...and this is my Mother. Mother, please meet Elaine Booker, she's the
inspector from the DHSS I was telling you about."
Jason was happy that his mother was heeding his advice, and she seemed
very relaxed. But he had assumed the inspector would be a man, and he
was shaken when he realized he would have to convince another woman of
his disguise. Elaine Booker was a striking woman. Tall, athletic
looking with short, tidy hair. She wore a tailored suit, not unlike a
man's business suit, but cut with elegant lines to show her trim waist,
and long legs. She was pleasant, but also rather business-like. Jason
realized he would have to be very focused to maintain the charade.
"Pleased to meet you, dear," Jason almost screeched out. "Please sit
down." Keeping up this high-pitched rasping was going to make his throat
sore by the end of the afternoon.
"Likewise, Mrs Jones," she replied, as she firmly used her backside to
force a space for herself in the pile of cushions on the other end of
the couch.
"I know you were expecting Mr. Carruthers, but he was sent on a three-
month secondment, so I have been brought in from Head Office at short
notice to cover for him. In fact, I only arrived yesterday and today is
my first day doing these inspections."
Marion was smiling warmly at Ms Booker. She seemed quite taken with the
elegant and assertive woman.
"Would you like some tea? I've made cake, too," she offered.
"That would be marvellous," said Elaine, and smiled back. Then she
turned to Jason.
"Now, dear, I've read your notes, and I can see you've lead a very
interesting life, and I'd love to hear some of your stories. But first,
I need to get some details down. So I need your full name, date of
birth, age last birthday and a few other personal details."
As far as Jason was concerned, this was the easy stuff.
"My full name is Noreen Emily Tibbs, but my stage name was Kitty
LaBeaux, and all my friends call me Kitty." Jason smiled at Ms Booker,
and patted her hand warmly with her own gloved hand. "So you can call
me Kitty, too."
"Thank you, Miss LaBe...err..Tibbs, I mean, Kitty." Elaine smiled back
at Jason. For the next few minutes, Elaine Booker ran through a list of
routine questions, which Jason answered with ease, interspersing his
answers with a few rambling anecdotes of nightclub life in the 70s,
which he recalled from bedside chats with his Grandma. He felt he was
doing a fabulous impression of a slightly dotty old woman, at ease with
her past and her appearance.
"Now then Kitty, I need to get some information about your health
issues. OK?"
"Of course, honey, I think I'm doing all right for an old girl who's
been round the block a few times, eh?" said Jason, winking broadly at
Elaine.
"Oh, really? So you would say your health is generally good?"
Jason caught himself. His mother had made a number of claims for medical
expenses, and he didn't want to contradict anything.
"Well, considering everything...I guess my memory is a bit dodgy, but
that might just be old age."
"I have to verify some claims here for sleeping pills, diuretics,
support hose, opticians cost and incontinence pads. Now, have you been
having problems sleeping?"
Jason was scrambling a little now. "Err...oh, yes...the pills were very
helpful."
"And the diuretics? They're normally for high blood pressure, but they
do make you pee a lot...perhaps the reason for the incontinence
pads...?"
"Yes, yes, of course dear."
"Ok. I still need to get a doctor to see you, to make sure you're
following your drug regimen. I've also got a claim here for dental work
relating to dentures, which I will need to get a dentist to check out.
Otherwise, I think I have everything I need. Just a few questions for
you, Marion"
Jason smiled at Elaine, but he was squirming inside. Thank goodness this
was almost over.
"Now, Marion, I need a few questions about your income status. Tell me,
do you have any other income apart from the Social Security?"
"Well, my son Jason gives me a little, but he's off to college...I mean
he's gone to college so I can't really count on that. He'll need all his
money to get by."
"So you will have a spare room now he's away? That's interesting. You
see, the authorities encourage claimants to raise as much income as they
can for themselves, and renting out a room is a good source of income.
Oh, and I've just had a marvelous thought! I still haven't got anywhere
to live for the next few months. Perhaps you would consider letting
Jason's room to me for a short while? I'm sure my expenses would allow
me to be quite generous."
"Oh, that's a great idea! Mother, wouldn't that be fabulous? Yes, I can
clear up Jasons's things, and I'll give the room a quick clean, and move
his clothes out of the wardrobe. Oh, it'll be perfect."
Jason tried to look aghast at his mother and signal his dismay without
blowing his cover. Now she was being too cooperative, and his mother's
enthusiasm could not be countered. A generous deal was soon struck for
his room, and Ms Booker prepared to leave. Elaine looked intently at
Marion as she spoke, and did not break eye contact when Marion looked
back at her. In fact, she smiled very coyly.
"All I need now is for both of you to sign these forms to confirm that
this is a truthful and valid declaration of your status, and I can start
arranging the other visits."
Under the deep covering of powder and rouge, Jason was turning pale. He
felt the wave of nausea run though him as he realized the deep peril of
his situation. Meanwhile his mother was enthusiastically signing away
his immediate freedom on those dreaded forms.
Elaine Booker handed Jason the pen, and slid the forms in front of him.
Jason could barely hold the plastic pen with his shiny satin gloves, but
he managed to produce a convincing scrawl that looked like Noreen E.
Tibbs. Elaine suggested he remove the gloves to sign, but Jason knew
that would give the game away.
As Marion showed Ms Booker to the door, Jason could hear them in deep
conversation. Though he could not make out the words, it did not sound
very business-like, more of a chit-chat, which went on for some time.
When the door closed, Marion returned to Grandma's room with a big smile
on her face.
"Well, she was a very nice person. Very, very nice."
Jason exploded. "What the hell have you done?!? Why did you offer her my
room? Don't you remember we could go to jail for this?"
"My dear, don't worry, it's perfect. You're going off to college, so we
can rent out your room and help get the money for the trip to Spain."
"Oh, right, yeah, of course. And while I'm at college, who the fuck is
going to be Grandma?"
He wasn't sure if it was the expletive directed at his mother, or
whether it was the realization sinking in, but his mother seemed to
deflate like a punctured balloon.
"Oh my goodness, what have I done? I thought it was such a good idea. Oh
Lord..."
