When he came to, he was lying on the bed in his room. He was still
wearing the corset and hose, but the dress and heels had been removed.
Again, he forced himself to respond slowly, so as not to give himself
away. Looking around, he realized he was alone. This time, he called out
for Marion.
His mother appeared after a few moments, looking slightly ruffled. Her
cheeks looked flushed, and he couldn't tell whether it was exertion or
perhaps she was wearing a little blusher. She certainly didn't wear
lipstick very often, as she was doing now. He wondered how long he had
been out of it - several years maybe?
"Elaine, she's awake," Marion called, and Elaine entered the room
purposefully.
"Now then Kitty, you gave us a big scare. Marion and I are very worried
about your health. You need to take your tablets regularly - here..."
she offered Jason two more of the little yellow pills which he swallowed
- "..and you're not wearing your pad again." Jason squirmed, and
realized he was lying in a damp patch on the bed.
"You've been giving your daughter a real headache, and she seems quite
frazzled." Jason noticed Marion seemed to smirk to herself as Elaine
said this. "I've decided we all need a bit of a break."
'What was this woman talking about' thought Jason. He just needed to get
her out of the house so he could...damn, what was it he needed to do.
Something about going to Spain to sing in bar, I think. He tried to
respond, but his mind was so foggy, and he could not find the words he
wanted to say. His mouth opened, and he let out a harsh little, high-
pitched grunt.
Marion came forward. "Oh, yes Mother, it's for the best. You know how
hard it has been for me looking after you all these years. I'm happy to
do it for you, you were a wonderful mother to me as I grew up, but I
just need a little break right now." Though the haze, Jason realized his
mother seemed to be talking to Kitty. Had she cracked? Did she believe
he really was Kitty? He was still trying to make sense of it all when
the sleeping pills hit him again, and he feel deeply asleep.
They were at a seaside holiday camp. It was the middle of the day, and
Jason, Marion and Elaine had just left the beach. Now they were sitting
at a table in a big hall, watching the talent contest. Teenage boys
climbed on stage and did impersonations of long-gone celebrities,
teenage girls went up in threes and fours and performed bad covers of
girl band songs. Suddenly the lights went down, and a spotlight picked
out Jason. The announcer was calling him to the stage.
"And now, all the way from Winston's Night Club in Soho, it's Kitty
LaBeaux!!"
Jason turned and looked at his companions for an explanation. His mother
was now dressed in a very sexy cocktail dress, and was dripping with
diamonds, while Elaine was dressed in a man's tuxedo. They were both
clapping and cheering, Elaine was whistling with two fingers in her
mouth. Both of them were motioning him to climb up on stage. Jason stood
up and started walking towards the stage, but then froze in confusion in
the middle of the floor. Suddenly a male dancer, bare-chested, well-
toned and bronzed, and wearing only dress pants ran to Jason and grabbed
his arm. He tried half heartedly to pull Jason to the stage steps, but
Jason resisted easily. Then another dancer appeared on his other arm,
then another dancer and another until Jason was surrounded, then he was
scooped up and carried prostrate to the stage. The dancers swing him
around, so that Jason could gracefully slide from their grasp. He
carefully placed his gold stiletto heel on the stage, and used the
dancers to lever himself upright. It was difficult in the tight, golden
sheath dress which clung to his thighs and held his ankles close
together, but he was propelled upright, and steadied himself, just as
the band finished their intro. Squinting through his long, black
lashes, he reached for the mic stand with his long, golden gloves, and
pulled the mic close to his glossy scarlet lips...
"The night is bitter,

And suddenly you're older,
And all because of the man that got away"
As Jason crooned out the sexy words, he felt two muscular arms snake
round his waist from behind, and hug him tightly. He saw Elaine's arm
draped around Marion's shoulder as they watched closely. For a moment
Jason felt safe and comforted by the embrace, then suddenly he screamed,
and sat bolt upright in bed.
He looked around and realized it was morning, but he had no idea what
time it was. He labored to sit upright - everything physical seemed to
take so much effort recently - and leant back against the scented
pillows. He noticed three large suitcases standing next to his wardrobe,
and remembered what Marion had said last night about having a break. For
a split second he felt annoyed that Marion and Elaine had packed his
clothes without letting Kitty choose, until he realized that was not the
point at all. Gathering his thoughts, he realized he had to make sure
his disguise was intact before he could confront them.
He went to the wardrobe, and found there was not much left to choose
from. He was still squeezed into a one piece, tight control girdle, and
he was wearing thick, tan-colored support hose. But he felt he should
face the women with defiance this time, and picked a striking black
swing dress with red polka dots and a halter neck. He added a number of
black silk petticoats to fill out the full skirt, and slipped on a pair
of black, open-toed high heels, with a red ribbon on the toe. He
accessorized the dress with a wide red belt at his waist, a red chiffon
scarf at his neck, and of course a slash of thick scarlet on his lips.
He added large red hoops to his ears, and a sumptuous long black wig.
When he looked in the mirror, he realized he looked more like a 50s
starlet than a 73 year old woman, but the look gave him some much needed
confidence, given that the pills seemed to be making him feel so weak.
He arranged himself decorously on the couch, and called out in his Kitty
voice to Marion, who quickly appeared.
"Marion, what's happening to me?" he croaked.
"Kitty! You look so beautiful! Well, let me tell you. You're going on a
little holiday. Elaine has been brilliant, she's arranged it all. We've
packed your bags, she's just gone to get the transport, you're going to
love it."
"MARION! Stop!" Jason tried to remember the last time he had called her
Mum, but like everything these days, it was lost in the fog. "Marion,
where is she taking me?"
"Well, it's called Greenways, it's the local old peoples home, but they
specialize in people who are a little, you know, slow on the uptake.
They have doctors and nurses who can look after you and see to your
meds. She told me it's very nice there. They have lots of activities,
they even put on little shows in the afternoon."
"Marion. I'm not old. I'm not even a woman. Remember?"
"I know dear, but you have been acting very strange lately, what with
your little faints, and the strange dreams, and the constant tiredness.
You haven't been yourself, and since Elaine arranged this place which
has doctors and nurses, I thought it would be a good place for you to be
checked out while we're away. So long as you stay in character, you
should be well looked after, and they might be able to sort out your
issues."
"What? Sorry, while you're away?" Jason felt his strength slipping away,
along with his recently renewed confidence.
"Yes, Elaine realized it's been such an exhausting time caring for
Grandma, she's taking me for a short holiday to France. Lots of good
food, great wine and sunshine..."
"How long will you be gone?"
"Oh, no more than two weeks..."
"No! I'm not going to be in that place for two weeks?" Jason's addled
brain was trying to process everything he was hearing. Part of him was
trying to think of a way out of his situation, part of him was planning
what to wear when he performed for the old folk. His brain began to ache
from the effort, when Elaine returned and came in through the door with
two tall men in uniform.
"Marion, the ambulance is here to take Kitty. Please say your goodbyes
to her, I would like to give her her meds, then I'll explain to her
what's going to happen en route."
Marion leaned down and carefully kissed Jason, taking care not to smudge
his lipstick. She gave him a quick wave and left the room. Elaine rather
roughly forced Jason to swallow a handful of tablets, including a couple
of green ones he had never seen before. Then Elaine helped Jason up
from the couch, and positioned him in the wheelchair. Carefully placing
Jason's wrists on the arms of the chair, she started to bind his left
wrist to the chair with a leather cuff. As Jason tried to pull his hands
away, one of the ambulance men grabbed his other arm. In no time at all,
Jason was bound into the chair by his wrists and ankles. He gave a
cursory tug on both cuffs, but he was overwhelmed by fatigue and an
overwhelming sense of defeat. Elaine came round in front of the chair,
and knelt down in front of him.
"Now then, Kitty, my dear. I'm sorry about the cuffs, but it's standard
procedure for transporting patients in the ambulance. We wouldn't want
you to spoil those lovely soft, smooth hands..." Her voice was dripping
with sarcasm. "...and I don't want you to start striking out at me when
you hear what is going to happen next. Then again, once those tablets
start kicking in, you probably won't need the cuffs any more."
One of the orderlies came round behind Jason, and tipped back the
wheelchair. He spun him around and headed for the door.
"Wait! We forgot something." Elaine went to the bedside table, and
opened a draw, searching for something. "Ah, here we are. OK, let's go."
The orderly wheeled Jason down the hall and out through the front door.
The ambulance had a small ramp, and he was pushed up into the back. He
noticed his suitcases had already been loaded, along with a few
cardboard boxes with some of Grandma's keepsakes. One box seemed to be
full of the makeup items from her dresser. The wheelchair was locked in
place, and the door closed. As the ambulance pulled away, Jason looked
out of the windows for some form of escape.
"Now, we really do need to look after your well-being. I mean, I haven't
even seen you wearing those special glasses that cost the State so much.
Maybe that's why you've been having headaches? Here, let me slip them
on."
Elaine still had the spectacles she'd taken from Kitty's bedside table
in her hand. They were brown tortoiseshell, with diamante inserts on the
corners. They were large, and butterfly-shaped, like a 50s secretary
might have worn. They matched her current outfit perfectly. But as
Elaine slipped them on him, Jason realized that his Grandma had very bad
vision, and he could see almost nothing but a blur through the thick
lenses. He concentrated hard, screwing up his eyes, but nothing would
come into focus.
"Are you having trouble, dear? Don't worry, you'll get used to them
fairly quickly. In fact, in no time at all you won't be able to see
without them."
As the ambulance bumped along, Jason no longer had any idea which
direction he was heading. He felt rather than watched Elaine move
alongside him and lean close to his ear.
"Kitty, dear, I am SO worried about your health. You seem to keep having
these little episodes, and for a woman of your age we can't be too
careful."
Jason noticed how she emphasized 'a woman of your age', but he knew
there was little he could do, so he forced himself not to show any
reaction.
"You've been having these fainting fits, your delusional episodes seem
to have increased, you've been increasingly incontinent, and I'm sure
you've been having the strangest dreams. Well, you sure should have been
while you've been taking that double dose of Olanzapine. Oh, sorry, my
mistake, two tablets twice a day, that's FOUR times the recommended
dose. No wonder it's so difficult to keep reality and fantasy straight
in that sweet little head of yours while I've been filling you full of
drugs. Do you even know who you are any more? Are you a fading old has-
been torch singer with a fetish for lipstick and powder, or are you just
a smart alec, state defrauding student - with the same fetish?"
Jason wanted to react, but whatever pills Elaine had given him before
they left were now in full effect. He knew she had slipped something
extra in there, and he was now feeling as weak as a kitten.
"Well, I've decided to sort that out for you. I am very well connected
where you are going, and the resident doctor there - Dr Mortimer - is a
colleague of mine. This is not the first time we've had to deal with a
'difficult' patient. But don't worry, it's very, very secure. Dr
Mortimer is going to make sure that you keep taking ALL your meds, he's
going to make sure no-one gets too close to you to examine your - ahem -
female credentials, and as a licensed psychotherapist, he's going to
help you with some therapy for your identity crisis. You're going to
have a lovely room there, with all your costumes, makeup and memorabilia
around you. You're going to perform regularly for the residents, and
tell them stories of your days on the boards. You might even meet a
respectable old man, who will take to you and shower you with adoration
and affection."
"You see, you're a special lady. You might look like you're in your
seventies, but we both know you are not yet 20 years old, so you can
look forward to a long-term relationship. Or two, or maybe even three.
And while you are there, Marion and I are going to set up our home
together. Oh, Marion - she is such a sweet one. You probably never
understood that she has always been attracted to women, but I noticed,
and we hit it off that very first day. Then, once I worked out what you
two were up to, I knew I just needed to get YOU out of the way."
"And here's the irony. Instead of uncovering your fraud and sending you
off to jail, you made it so easy for me to simply push you in even
deeper. Do you realize how much money Marion and I will be able to claim
from the State to have you staying at Greenways? With that money, your
continuing medical expenses and your pension, it will be more than
enough for us to have a good life together, and to keep Dr Mortimer
happy. Of course, you'll need to be there for a long time. Marion thinks
you are just going to be there for a couple of weeks, but once she hears
that your condition has deteriorated, your delusions have got stronger,
and you need constant medical attention, she will just accept it. And if
you have any thoughts of spilling the beans, remember that now you're on
the inside, it's your dear, sweet, simple mother who would carry the can
for all this fraud, and she will head to jail."
By the time Elaine had finished speaking, Jason's muscles were drained
of energy, and he could no longer hold up his head, which lolled against
his bare shoulder. The ambulance slowed down for a tight corner, and
then Jason heard - but of course, could not see - the set of large
metal gates that swing shut loudly behind them.
