My dad got orders for Germany and he had to leave before the rest of us.
We stayed at one of my dad's buddies in Trenton, NJ. On major life
changing events for me, until we got our orders and followed dad to
Mannheim, Germany. I had turned 13 a month before we got there, I
believe it was 1968.
Shortly after we got there my step-mother's sister came to live with us,
I only had my own room for 2 months and had to give it up to her and room
with my big brother. He really did not like that, so, I told dad it's
OK, I will just sleep on the sofa.
School started, and my life just seemed to get more and more confusing.
I was I the library and 3 girls that I knew asked if I would mind taking
a little test for them, it will be a fun test. I thought that it might
be a good way to make some friends.
Susan then told me to stand over at the book case and show them I would
do some things. She said, "There is something on the bottom of your
shoe, see what it is." I looked over my right shoulder moved my foot by
lifting the heel and looked.
"Now strike a match," she said. I held my pretend book of matches in my
left hand, then using my right hand struck it going away from me. She
then told me to return sit down and cross my legs. I returned and cross
them at the knees.
"What type of test was that?" I asked.
Susan, replied, "It was a test of your mannerisms, and 3 of them say you
are 75% girl the other is a tossup, you walked over like a girl but came
back like a boy."
I was at a loss for words, sitting with a blank and vacant look. Nancy
one other the other girls came over and sat down and said, "It was just a
silly test it really does not mean anything, it's OK."
I said, "It was not silly for me I found out that I am 75% like a girl."
"You are cute and would look nice if you were a girl so don't be mad,"
Nancy said. I had hoped that it would lead somewhere but it did not.
They left, and I was lost in thought.
Walking home my mind was in a whirlwind I remembered the boy I tried to
be a girl with and the fact that I still would like to dress up. Nancy
did say that I would like nice as a girl and my aunt is about the same
size as me. I knew that I was going to see if I did like a girl, the
first chance I could I would. This time I was going to do everything I
could to be a girl.
I had to wait 3 weeks before that chance, dad told me Friday night he and
Bernie would be going out and I would be babysitting. I knew my aunt
would be working until late at the officers' club. 2 days to wait, 1
more day to go, TGIF at last.
Bernie said, "Give the kids their baths, do the dishes and bring up the
clothes from the drying room."
"OK," I said, "have fun."
"Baths and to bed," I said, "you two heard your mother." After bath time
I put them to bed. Now do the dishes and get the clothes. Then I could
dress up and see if Nancy was right. I then thought dishes dress up and
then get the clothes. Dishes done in record time.
I shaved in the morning did not have much hair but, I was going to do it
right. I went into my aunt's room to find the clothes to wear, a light
tan bra and panties, panty hose, tan and brown dress 3 inches above the
knees (hard to zip up the back) short sleeves and scoop neck line and 3-
inch-high heels that were tan. Oops, almost forgot the socks to fill out
the bra cups. Off with my clothes and into my aunt's. Next stop her
vanity for makeup. Foundation, eye brow pencil, brown and light cream
eye shadow, mascara, blush and dark wine lip stick. Then I saw what I
needed to finish my look a brown fall to turn my hair style into a
girl's. When I turned back to look in the mirror, the fall had worked
like magic.
I saw her looking back at me, Nancy was right I DID LOOK NICE AS A GIRL!
It was only from the waist up so, I walked down the hall to the full-
length mirror on the back of the bathroom door, I should say I tried to
walk. Almost fell, twice but, I did make it. A total picture of a girl
and I knew I had to be her as often as I could.
Just getting the clothes, will be a real chore. Down 3 flights of
stairs, 25 feet more to the drying room and back with the clothes. The
task needed to be done and if I wanted to be the girl in the mirror I was
just going to do it. She looked hot in her heels so, I had no choice. I
went down 1 flight of stairs before I noticed, I forgot the laundry
basket. Oh, well I did need to learn how to walk in these heels. I got
more confident with each step. Down the 3 flights to the drying room, I
opened the door and my heart stopped. A woman was getting her clothes
and turning to face me. I thought I would die, I told myself, (if it
walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it's a duck). She said,
"I don't think I've seen you before. Do you live in this building?"
"No, I live down the street I'm babysitting for the Fails," I said.
She said, "I don't know them."
Third floor on the right I told her. She was done putting her clothes in
her basket, then left.
I felt great, I passed the test she saw a girl and I gave her no reason
to think anything else. I did not even think about walking in high heels
on the way back up the stairs, it seemed as if it was the most natural
thing in the world for me to do.
I dumped the clothes on the sofa and was starting to fold and thought my
big brother could be home at any minute. No time to fold right now must
get out of these clothes put mine back on wash my face and hope he does
not come home until I am done. I had just got back to folding the
clothes when in he walked. Made it by 2 minutes. I finished folding the
clothes and I had put them back into the basket when everybody made it
back. They did not need to know how I enjoyed getting the clothes.
I tried to see the girl in the mirror as often as I could, and I had such
I good time, that is until my dad caught me. That's all for now.
