Donald took the day off to finish up the porch and he was sawing a 2x4
when Cindy came by.

think anybody that could talk to Susan about that is either Lillian or
Regina."
"I heard about her."
Donald said, "Ya, Lillian and Elbert are at the retirement home now
and we might see them this weekend. Lillian was kind of a matriarch
though she wasn't one who stayed at that motel."
"Bye I will come and see her later."
Donald waved and said, "Goodbye."
He went back to work and worked on it until noon and then he went to
his Tahoe to get his lunch when Regina came home.
Regina looked at the porch and said, "Honey, you have gotten a lot
done. I may have to make up something just to see you in those sexy
work pants."
Donald laughed and said, "I just may have to wear them more often for
you and heck might build a smoker in the backyard."
She laughed and said, "How about I make lunch for us."
Donald said, "I can't turn that down."
She went in and started making lunch for them and he nailed down a 2x4
to a 4x6 and he went in to wash up.
He went in and he saw that Regina made deviled egg sandwiches with
apple slices and had ice tea.
"I was thinking about inviting Earl and all the girls for dinner
tonight."
Donald raised his eyebrow and said." You aren't thinking about playing
matchmaker are you."
She laughed and said, "No, don't worry I know he isn't ready yet still
mourning the loss of his wife. No, I think it would be good for the
girls to hear his story and I think he would enjoy another evening of
socializing."
Donald replied." Ya, you are probably right he did enjoy our company."
She said, "Ya, and has anybody ever documented that night?"
Donald said, "I don't think so."
"That is strange you would think that the children and grandchildren
would love to know."
"You are probably right."
They started eating and Regina said, "I have started missing deer
hunting."
Donald looked at her stunned.
She said, "Really, you think a girl like me would not want to hunt?
Isn't that a little sexist."
Donald thought about it and said, "I forgot where you came from before
you were transformed you came from that small town in Oklahoma. and it
is Michelle who is the city girl."
Regina laughed and said, "Ya Newkirk and Michelle came from St. Louis.
Ok, you are forgiven for now.'
Donald smiled and said, "Hey I hope you forgive me more than just this
one time because I put my foot in my mouth pretty regularly."
They both laughed and Regina said, "Of course I will always forgive
you."
Donald asked, "What was your favorite hunting gun?"
"I used a 30-06 and it was a bolt action the rifle that I had was a
Remington 700."
Donald whistled and said, "Wow, that is a nice rifle."
"I loved it that is the rifle I used since the 8th grade."
Donald said, "Is that what you are going to get this time?"
"I hope so I was able to put the tightest groupings with that rifle
talking 2" at 100 yards."
Donald whistled and said, "Wow, I am impressed and you know I
understand women are more accurate shooters than men."
"I forgot about that so be prepared to be outshot by me."
Donald said, "Go to Snyder's Sports if anybody in this town can outfit
you with a Model 700 30-6 it is them, The manager Jack Edelson he eats
lives and sleeps firearms."
"I will keep that in mind."
"He grew up around here and like most of us well pretty used to that
crazy motel."
"I will keep that in mind."
All of a sudden there was a knock on the door and it was Michelle and
Regina got up to get the door.
Michelle said, "I need to see your fiance."
Regina said, "Come on in we are having lunch."
Michelle said, "I can't believe it somebody has an interest in your
house."
"You didn't list it yet did you?"
"No, won't be listed until your wedding."
Donald said, "OK, just go back and get the person's bid of what he is
willing to pay but tell him or her I am not willing to sell just yet
but if it is a good enough bid they can get the first crack at it."
Michelle said, "OK I can do that."
"So how are things at the office?"
"Other than that person showing interest pretty routine today."
Regina said, "I was going to try to invite Earl over for dinner if you
want to come."
Michelle asked, "Is the man whose mother was one of the ladies of that
motel or hotel?"
Regina said, "He is and he has an interesting story about his mom and
dad."
Michelle said, "Just let me know when he takes the invitation I would
love to meet him."
Regina said, "I will let you know."
Michelle left and Donald helped Regina clean up and then after that he
went back out.
He started putting down the 2x4s and nailing them down and then after
that, he put the railings around the porch and he saw he was finished
by 3:30.
He started to put his tools away and clean up then Regina came out.
She looked at the porch and saw it was done and said, "This looks so
good,"
Donald replied, "Going to the hardware store to get some paint so I
can match the porch with the house. What about work?"
Regina said, "My assistant manager said I can take the rest of the day
off since today is a fairly slow day. Besides that one girl, I put her
back on probation and she can't mess up anymore."
"OK sounds like everything is under control."
Don went to his Tahoe and backed out of the driveway and then he
headed back into town.
He got to the hardware store and the manager said, "Donald how can I
help you?"
Donald said, "I have to get about 4 gallons of this color paint."
He showed him the label and the manager said, "This don't look like
your house."
Donald said, "It isn't it is a porch for Regina's."
"That is your fiance isn't it."
Donald shook his head he is still amazed at how fast news travels in
this town.
He went back and they mixed the color and the manager said, "This
should do it."
He wrote out a check for $40 and he walked out to his Tahoe and next
thing there was a car pulling in.
It was Earl and Earl said, "So Regina invited me over to her house
this evening."
Donald said, "So are you coming?"
"I am and what is that paint for?"
"Regina's porch."
Earl said, "You are a great guy."
Donald laughed and said, "I hope so. I will see you there this
evening."
He closed the tailgate and got in his Tahoe.
He started it up and backed up and headed back to Regina's and got
there within in 15 minutes.
Regina came out as Donald was unloading the paint and she said,
"Forget about painting the porch Earl will be coming over this evening
go ahead and go home and clean up.'
Donald said,"I saw Earl OK I will go home to clean up."
Regina hugged and kissed Donald and she said, "I do love you babe and
I can't wait to be your wife."
Donald said, "I can't wait to be your husband."
He went out to his Tahoe and within 10 minutes he got back to his
house.
Inside the house he went into his laundry room and stripped naked and
threw his clothes into the hamper.
He went into his bedroom and got out a pair of boxers and then went
into the bathroom.
He turned on the water and when the water got into temps he stepped in
and pulled the curtains.
He lathered himself up and then rinsed himself off and heated up his
face then turned off the water and stepped out of the shower and then
shaved and stepped into his bedroom.
He went into his closet and got our a pair of slacks and then he sat
on the bed and put on a pair of socks and then got on his slacks.
He then went into the dresser and pulled out a red knit shirt and put
it on then put on a pair of loafers.
He went back to the bathroom and combed his hair looked in the mirror
and then looked at his watch.
It was now 5:00 and he got in his Tahoe and then he stopped by the
liquor store and got a case of beer and a couple of bottles of wine
and then left the liquor store.
He drove the 10 minutes to Regina's and it was now 5:30.
He went up to the front porch and walked in with the wine and beer and
he kissed Regina.
Regina looked and shook her head and said, "I can't believe you. But I
have to say you clean up so well."
He said, "Thank you hon go ahead and chill the wine."
The first guests to show up were Michelle and Alan and Michelle said,
"Don, you look so good. Oh, Don, that person was offering $300,000
cash. I told him when the house goes to market he can have the first
bid."
Donald said, "Good."
Alan said, "Hello Don."

"That porch is looking good."
Donald said, "I only have to get it painted. Anybody wants to help I
will take volunteers."
Regina said, "Honey really?"
He laughed and said, "I don't care for painting."
As they were laughing and talking Amy and her new boyfriend and there
was Susan and Cindy came in and Susan looked ashamed as she came to
apologize.
She said, "Please forgive me of my behavior."
Don said, "Please don't worry about it that was Adelaide's doing. She
brought back my deceased wife back to complicate things. We have a man
coming and you should listen to what he has to say."
She said, "OK, I will thank you."
Just as if on cue Earl knocked on the door and Regina came to the door
and said, "Earl, why don't you come in. Earl this redhead is Amy that
blonde is Michelle the lady you already know is Stephanie that other
redhead is Susan that other brunette is Cindy."
Earl said, "The one thing about that motel, Adelaide sure gives us
some good looking ladies."
Michelle said, "I understand that you had a unique mom."
"If you are talking about her being a product of that what was once a
hotel yes she was and I was the youngest of us 5 children."
He looked at Susan and she still looked a little ashamed.
Earl asked, "What is wrong dear?"
"I came unto Donald like his deceased wife."
Earl said, "When my mom was transformed from a man to I guess the word
is androgynous well that witch as a bonus also soured milk in this
farmer's cows."
She said, "Really, let me tell you the story about her.'
"Anyway where that motel is was I believe a witch's coven. Anyway, the
town's people got tired of them being there so they killed what
witches they could and chased out the others. Now the last witch as
she was being dragged off well, she cursed the land that the motel
sits on. People would mysteriously die in one of the rooms and that
hotel shut down after my mom stayed there. My mom came around 1910 I
believe she was going to be this town's blacksmith well of course by
next morning this town didn't get a blacksmith. My dad married her
about 5 years later and I was born in 1946."
Susan said, "I feel better now."
He said, "Good, I am glad. Now, you are the newest addition to Silver
Springs."
Cindy asked, "Are you androgynous?"
He laughed and said, "No, but that doesn't necessarily make me
normal."
Cindy asked, "Would you marry a woman like me?"
Earl looked at her inhaled and said, "If I was ready to date and marry
of course I would. I lost my wife about 5 years ago due to breast
cancer after 35 years of marriage and I found out the other night I am
still mourning the loss. But I bet you ain't ready to date or marry
yet either."
She said, "No, but it makes me feel good that you would."
Earl said, "This has been going on now for about 3 generations and the
men here don't look at ladies like you as strange."
Susan asked, "Really?"
He laughed and said, "When this has been going on for as long as it
has well we look at women who have been through that spell as pretty
normal."
Susan said, "I been feeling like a freak."
Earl said, "Well, this town is a freak town so being a freak town and
you girls being freaks makes you normal. Some people here would say I
am the biggest freak of all."
Everybody laughed and Regina said, "Dinner is ready and I tried my
hand at Shepard's Pie."
Earl said, "UMMMMMM Delicious I love Shepard's Pie."
Regina said, "This is my first time cooking it so we will find out."
Regina put the 10 x12 casserole dish of Shepard's Pie down and salad
with dinner rolls.
Don and Earl had a beer and everybody else had glasses of wine.
They all took a bite and Earl said, "This is absolutely delicious."
Everybody ate and everybody was filled up and there were leftovers and
after Don and all the ladies helped Regina clean they got out of the
kitchen.
Regina said, "Why don't we go out to my new porch."
They walked out and everybody was impressed with the porch.
Regina said, "Donald just finished building it."
Don said, "Still have to paint it."
Alan said, "I can't believe how nice this porch is."
Earl said, "You can't have a good house without a porch."
Regina said, "I think I will keep him. Susan, I want us to be friends
at first I was a little angry not so much at you but Adelaide because
I felt like that Adelaide wanted to rip Don from my arms."
Susan said, "I like that and yes, I want us to be friends."
Regina and Susan hugged and when they separated Susan had tears of
happiness.
Earl asked, "Do you mind if I light my pipe?"
Regina said, "Of course not."
Earl took out his pipe and shook out tobacco into the bowl of his pipe
and then struck a match and he lit his pipe.
He inhaled a little and then he said, "This is a nice little spot."
Regina said, "Thank you."
Earl said, "This is a great little town now we have a few people who
have lived here for 10 years or less and some of those people were so
unnerved at the spell that they had to leave."
Cindy said, "Silver Springs is so beautiful but I noticed around that
motel was like a desert."
Earl said, "I think it is because of that curse that Adelaide has
cast. She went by 2 names Adelaide and Adele now why I have no idea.
She lived in Silver Springs for about another 45 years and then she
just vanished. "
Susan asked, "So when did she vanish?"
Earl said, "I was a young'un I believe about 10 so I believe about
1956. I can't remember exactly."
Regina said, "You should document your family history."
Earl said, "You know mom did write some things down about her life I
remember her always taking time to write a diary. I think she may have
written about 5 to 6 volumes maybe more."
Regina said, "Really?"
Earl said, "I never thought anybody would be interested. You being
this interested mom would have probably loved you."
Regina said, "I am going to have to make sure you are invited to our
wedding."
Earl smiled and said, "I would love that."
Earl took out his pocket watch and struck a match and saw it was
already 10.
He said, "Gracious me it is getting late and I am afraid I am at my
best behavior which won't last very long so I am going to have to go."
Regina hugged Earl and she said, "Earl, you are family to me."
Earl whispered, "I believe I have a new family member."
Earl walked towards his 1972 GMC K20 and Don said, "Nice looking
truck."
Earl said, "I bought it new in 72 and mom thought I was insane for
financing it for $5500."
Don said, "That was expensive."
Earl laughed and said, "I struggled for 2 years to get it paid off but
it has done me well."
Earl opened the door and climbed into the cab and started up the truck
and backed up then headed down the road.
Susan said, "I forgot to ask him what he did."
Regina said, "I can write the directions down to his house and also
write his number down for you."
Susan said, "That would be wonderful and right now I just want to be
friends with him."
Regina said, "Dear, he would be honored I am sure."
As they were leaving Donald said, "I thought you said you weren't
playing matchmaker."
Regina said, "I am not and neither one is ready for anything more than
friendship but I saw they were hitting it off. Susan wanted to ask him
some questions like what he did and various other questions and wanted
to get to know him better."
Donald said, "Well I knew he was a good guy and tonight confirmed it."
Regina said, "I would love to see those diaries."
"He will probably give you an opportunity to look at them"
Donald said, "Good night honey I do love you."
Donald and Regina kissed each other and then Regina said, "I do love
you also and good night."
Donald walked to his Tahoe and he got in and he started it up and
backed up and turned into the street.
Regina closed the door and Stephanie said, "Well, Earl is quite a man
isn't he.'
Regina replied, "Yes, he is but he does make me feel better about the
prospect of conceiving a child."
Stephanie said." I am the same way if I ever get ready to marry a
man."
Regina said, "Good night Stephanie and I have to say life is looking
so good for me. That definitely includes meeting you and Cindy and I
also have a new appreciation and respect for the position that Susan
was in."
Stephanie said, "Good night Regina."
Regina went to her bedroom and this dinner went far better than she
could have ever imagined and yes, she saw she did have wonderful
friends and who she considered like family or even family.
She got dressed for bed and she brushed out her hair and as she pulled
back her covers she still couldn't believe how her life has been here
in Silver Springs. She crawled into bed and almost immediately after
her head hit the pillow she fell into a restive sleep.
