Johnathan got home from work late Friday. He usually left an hour early at four pm but today he stayed late and ended up leaving well after 6:00. Even throughout his seventeen year marriage but now he was in the best shape of his life. John went upstairs, kicking off his shoes and leaving them at the base the staircase. As he walked up the stairs he untied his tie and unbuttoned his shirt slowly preparing to get undressed as he headed to his room. "Hey, guy, nice panties!" yelled an obviously drunk young man from the passenger side window. This was followed by a chorus of mostly inoffensive jokes and laughter. John wasn't worried and had the quick thought to go along with them.
"Thanks guys, glad you noticed," he yelled back to the vehicle which had stopped at a red light. This was met with raucous laughter and while at the intersection he looked over and saw the driver, a handsome young black man, shaking his head and laughing to himself quietly. Obviously he was the only sober person in the vehicle. For a second, while John was waiting to cross the street they made eye contact. Not usually one to flirt John flashed a quick smile and a wink. The driver returned a sly smile and for a moment John was sure that the handsome driver was checking out his ass. However the light turned green and the car drove off and John was left wondering if it was all in his head.
Later that night after showering and changing John thought about maybe trying to meet someone. He thought about trying a gay club but realized that even as a young man he hadn't liked clubs of any kind. He also realized that as a divorced semi-closeted thirty-nine year old the idea of going to a club made him cringe a little. There was always the internet, but the last time he tried that he just couldn't get past all of the gross pictures. So that left limited options. So he found himself at the small liquor store/gas station near his home just before closing picking out a bottle of alcohol thinking he would have a few drinks, listen to some tunes, and slowly drift to sleep. He was the last customer of the night and the clerk quickly locked the door behind him as he left. Just as he was walking out a car pulled up quickly, obviously trying to beat the clock.
"Sorry guy, they just closed," John called out helpfully. Just as the driver got out of the car and started walking toward the building.
"Damn," said a young but very masculine voice. John looked over and saw that it was the driver from earlier in the night. John looked the young man up and down. He was tall, maybe a little over six feet and obviously he worked out. He looked to be about twenty-four or twenty-five. He was black and had bit of modelesque look to him. Again, they made eye contact. John felt his heart skip a beat. Not sure if the earlier moment was real or not he nevertheless ventured a bit of small talk. Hoping to get a feel for the guy.
"So, you ditched your friends, huh?" John said casually.
"Not exactly," the man replied. "I was the designated driver for tonight and they all decided to stay at my friend's place. I was planning to have a few drinks, and listen to some music back at my place but..." the young man shrugged nonchalantly. "Guess I'm outta luck...unless you wanna sell me yours," he laughed making a halfhearted gesture towards the brown bag in John's hands.
John wasn't expecting such a friendly exchange. He made some comment about the contents of the bag being "old man's" drink and this led to conversation about alcohol. Before he knew it John had been talking to the man for twenty minutes. Throughout the talk John had noticed several things about the man that he liked. A quiet confidence, a sense of humor, and a masculinity that made John wonder if he was barking up the wrong tree. But through that he started to notice a slight flirtatiousness and it gave him the confidence to venture what he said next.
"Well," said John, "I don't know about selling but I can definitely share. My house is about ten minutes away from here and you can come over for a few drinks if that would interest you."
A sly smile. "That would definitely interest me. I'm Leo by the way."
"I'm John. Follow me."
They got into their cars and drove, shortly pulling into John's driveway. On the way in John was acutely aware that he had invited a stranger back to his place but he figured the risk was no greater than meeting someone at a bar. Once inside John offered to make them both drinks but Leo declined.
"I'll make my own if you don't mind. I don't want to make it too strong. I have to drive home and the last thing I need is a DUI."
"Oh, it's no problem," John replied. "More for me." He laughed and made himself a strong drink to settle his nerves and loosen up around his new friend. They kept the conversation light and John kept his glass full. By the time he was on his third whiskey and coke Leo had just finished his first. The conversation turned to working out.
"So where do you work out? I can tell you hit the gym pretty hard." John said, his nerves finally gone. The younger man gave John a slow smile and in his loosened state it made John melt inside.
"I usually just work out on base," Leo said. Referring to the small military base in that town.
"Ah, so you're in the military. I should have known. You definitely have the build for it." John said.
"Well, you're in way better shape than I am," Leo said, trying to deflect the compliment. "Your running has definitely paid off." He said shrugging his shoulders.
"Thanks," said John accepting the compliment. "I don't know about 'way better’ but I guess you've seen more of me than I have of you. Those shorts were pretty short. I don't know what I was thinking," John laughed.
"At least they look good on you," Leo said casually taking the conversation further into flirting territory. "I bet you'd be wearing them right now if I wasn't here."
"If you weren't here I'd be wearing next to nothing," John replied.
"You could wear next to nothing with me here." said Leo with a shrug. The look that John's new friend was giving him set him on fire and alcohol in his system had lowered his inhibitions. John wasn't sure how this would go. But he was more than ready to find out
