The sound of brakes disturbed everyone except the two teenage girls. Willis Street was picking up after the mid-afternoon lull. She headed to the gift shop in the hospital foyer. At its entrance were balloons, cards and various other silly trinkets. Even in usual times it would be hard for a forty-two year old mother of two daughters to know what to get. Then she noticed the café next door. The collection of cakes and pies looked more like the things she remembered boys liking. She bought the two most expensive items, an overpriced slice of pre-packaged gateau and a box of Swiss chocolate.
The hospital had coloured lines on the floor so it was easy to find the orthopaedic ward though the maze of corridors. It was a shock the nurse orderly on the ward reception desk looked little older than her eldest, though she was efficient enough directing her to the boy’s room. Angela realised she needed to stop thinking of him as “the boy”. He was called Simon. Simon might be young, but he had put himself between a moving bus and her daughters. That deserved a little more respect than “the boy”.
Angela paused at the door. She peered through a window wanting to make sure she had composed herself before he saw her. There were four beds, each with curtains that had been pulled back. One bed was unoccupied and two had elderly men with broken legs. Simon was in the corner, his arms and leg heavily bound, visible because the sheet was arranged under them.
Only Simon turned to look up when she came in.
“Hello,” said Angela, because there was nothing else she could think to say.
He nodded and turned back to his book. His face was surprisingly untouched. It was slightly chubby, as was his body.

She stepped towards him.

He looked embarrassed and uncertain what to do. Angela smiled at him.
“I was not sure what to bring you. Balloons and cuddly toys somehow didn’t seem right.”
He smiled and relaxed a little. Again he mumbled something inaudible.
She carried on. “I can see you like reading so next time I’ll bring you something to read. Will this do for the moment?”
She handed him the cake and chocolate. He took it and tried to put it on the bedside cabinet with his good arm but as he moved he winced. Angela took them and placed them for him. This time she heard a more distinct “thanks”.
“Are you alright? Is there anything else you need?”
This time she heard him.
“S’alright. They’re doing what they can.” He pointed to his limbs with his good arm. “Not much they can do now but wait.”
Angela saw she would need to take the lead so took off her jacket and pulled up a chair.
“Have you had many visitors?”
He shook his head. “My parents. A journalist but he got kicked out by the nurses.”
“No-one else from school or other friends?”
He shook his head. “I just split up with my girlfriend. I was in town to cheer myself up getting a couple of graphic novels when…”
He shrugged.
“Anyone from the bus company?”
He shook his head. Angela felt angry.
“They say the driver was drunk or d**gged up or something. They’re probably more worried about court cases than anything else.”

She was taken aback, a little offended but also amused. His tone was direct, an honest plea rather than anything nastier. Something else stirred in her that it took a moment to recognise. In a dark recess of her mind, constructed as she had taken on the responsibilities of career and family she loved, had been placed all thoughts that were inappropriate for this grown-up self. Now a couple of thoughts escaped. One was the, weird in the context, pleasure of thinking “A-ha, I know what I could give him that would be more than a token.”
More important was the memory it stirred of who she had been before she took on responsibilities. Her older self thought how inappropriate it was for this young man to make such a suggestion to someone in her position.
