after.
I remember her sister,

before he or she adapted
to the environment
within, and evolved
him- or herself
into the opposite sex,
whatever that was,

the survivor,
the fittest, Darwin would say.
I do not know
what to call her,
nor does my Beatrice,
whom I follow
down the straight
and narrow way
that leads us on.
