full of thorns
and wary,
even of the cloudbursts
and the rain?

and heart enough,

for a household full
of children.
But that was then,
before the Cataclysm,
and this is now,
after.
I remember her sister,
who'd been her brother
once, before the Change,
before he or she adapted
to the environment
within, and evolved
him- or herself
into the opposite sex,
whatever that was,
a transgender woman,
the survivor,
the fittest, Darwin would say.
I do not know
what to call her,
nor does my Beatrice,
whom I follow
down the straight
and narrow way
that leads us on.
