"She'll have plenty of time to figure out her life and what she wants before you move up to Boston."

"Deal, I will be creative and dirty." They spent the rest of the afternoon attached to each other when not joined." One the ride back to the city Curtis commented that he'd never seen them so happy if that was possible. At dinner it was just Kent and his father.

"I have something to discuss, seriously, with you. I want all your advice and suggestions and anything else you want to share. Just don't tell me no."

"Is she pregnant?"

"I'm asking Shay to marry me." William sat back looking at his son.

"Have asked, or plan to ask?"

"Not formally but I already know her answer, if that makes sense."

"I can't say I'm surprised. Or completely opposed. You do know that this can't get in the way...."

"It would be a long engagement. After undergraduate. I want to commit to Shay."

"You think you can do that? Especially separated for up to a year?"

"It would, help, with my commitment."

"And what advice and all would you like?"

"I thought you'd have any number of things to caution me about and recommend or demand."

"It's your life son. I've promised myself that it you stuck to my demands about school and career that I would not try to control you. I think you'd have to agree that I have lived up to that."

"So no warnings about pre-nups and all."

"Don't insult the girl. Your mother and I didn't have one and when we parted she got a LOT of money. We still have more than we need. So, as an attorney, I say it's a wise thing. As your father who is fond of your soon to be fiancee', I say, don't insult her. That's your commitment. You marry her, you don't fuck off. If you do, you pay."

"Son, it's just money. I enjoy it's use and what it beings us, but you can't let it control you. Make your plans, then see what life brings. You have my blessing."

"Thanks. And please don't tell Lily, I want someone to be surprised."

"Understood. And you know where my man is. Large, but not gaudy."

At that time in her apartment Shay was letting Penny know.

"Shay, that's so exciting! You've really hit the jackpot and I don't mean the rich part, but that's nice too."

"It gets better. He insists that while he's away, you continue to stay here while we're at school locally."

"You don't mean?"

"Yes, he was clear about it. No other MEN for me. And he will be faithful to me."

"So, he doesn't want?"

"I think that includes you. He's almost challenging himself."

"Shay, I can't thank you guys enough. I have an appointment with the psychologist for next week. Being with a man, even Kent would be difficult." Shay hugged Penny to her.

"Take your time, I'm here for you."

When Kent invited Shay to his family apartment for dinner Saturday she wondered if this was it. When she arrived and saw William barely supressing a smile, she know. After dinner was over and the plates cleared Kent called for champagne. William and Shay waited. Lily wonder what the occasion was until she saw Kent produce and small box. She gasped and looked at William unsure what to expect. When she saw pride and satisfaction she began to cry,

"Do it right son." So Kent got on a knee and opened the box to show her a large, but not gaudy, diamond ring. Despite knowing what was coming she shrieked. Kent smiled,

"Shay Benson, I love you more than life, more than anything in the world. Will you marry me?" Shay sprung forward embracing her beloved.

"Of course, YES!" Kent slid the ring on to her finger. Shay admired it and showed William and Lily.

"William?"

"Shay, I already think of you as the daughter I never had. You've matured my boy faster than I thought possible. I can't beieve it's just a year now and he's gone from spoiled school boy to becoming a responsible man. I understand you're going to wait for school?"

"Whatever Kent wants. I'm happy to be his intended. I'll make him the happiest man ever."

"I believe you already do." Lily slapped his arm.

"William!" He looked a Lily,

"Oh. You know I don't always have a dirty mind. She does make the boy happy." Lilly and William needed no more proof than to look over at the couple, hugging each other. Shay wiped her eyes.

"I need to call my parents." Kent and Shay went to an adjoining room. Shay was happy that her parents agreed to use the new phones she'd sent them. It had taken them awhile to get used to all the functions.

"Hello?"

"Mamma, it's Shay. Press the green button......"

"Oh I can see you. This is nice."

"Mamma, I have big news. Kent asked me to marry him."

"Oh, that's so exciting."

"Look at the ring!"

"Oh my, oh my goodness. Shay, my sweet little angel, they've blessed you."

"I couldn't be happier. Is Daddy there?"

"Yes and we have news too. With the debt off, we were able to sell the farm and move into a nicer house. Your father got a job at that big new store opened just outside of town. So many jobs for local people. It's been a godsend." Shay glanced over at Kent, who shrugged as if knowing nothing. "Your father hasn't look so good in years. Francis, it's Shay. Big news."

"Shay?" Now seeing him on the screen she had to admit he looked five years younger. The stress of the farm and the debt off his shoulders.

"Daddy, Kent asked me to marry him."

"He put a ring on your finger?" Shay waved her fingers at the screen.

"Engaged. We'll marry after college. That's the plan."

"I'll be damned. I may have underestimated the boy. I'll apologize to him." Now for the first time in her life Shay watched as Francis Benson cried. "I'm so sorry. I do love you. Like a Daddy should."

"Daddy, everything happens and leads us to a place. I'm with Kent and I couldn't be happier." Kent asked for the phone,

"Mr. and Mrs. Benson, thank you so much for Shay. There will be an engagement party at some point. I'd be honored if you both would attend."

Lillian asked, "What would we wear?"

"Mamma, I'm sure it will be fancy and all, we'll go shopping, get Daddy a tux and all." They chatted a short while longer, then Shay asked Kent to take her upstairs.

"Just don't cut me with that thing." They scampered up to Kent's bedroom. At the table, William and Lily heard them on the stairs and smiled at each other. In the bedroom, then stripped, then stood together as if hearing a slow dance, circling each other, taking in the person they were committing to. Admiring the person they would be dedicated to, then Kent scooped up Shay and lay her across his bed.

"I have the easy part. Committing to you, to all this. Since I first saw you last year I knew I couldn't be without you. He moved onto the bed and hovered over Shay, kissing her everywhere then locking in an embrace, they're bodings molding and wrapping around each other, their hands gliding along, memorizing each part, their lips tasting and touching and stimulating. Taking their time, not wanting to rush into something that might end, they enjoyed each other, then when they could bear it no longer, Kent entered Shay and they were one. Sharing their bodies, melding into a singular entity. Shay held her head alongside Kent's. Her eyes closed, feeling him within her, feeling his body against hers, thinking of how far she'd come in one year.
