The next day we spent getting ready for the long trip to Threm's winter camp. All three of us worked together preparing and crushing the salt rock. Then while Roya used some of the salt to preserve our meats, Sheel finished the elk skin she had stretched over the drying rack.
We fashioning arrow quivers with shoulder straps and redesigned the furs we wore over our jump suits. These furs no longer needed to be as bulky for warmth because of our jumpsuits, so we stripped all the hair off them turning the material into leather, and then using thin strips of elk hide, we stitched our newly designed clothing into trim, light weight, comfortable outerwear.
We used some thicker strips of elk leather to fashion belts, which we tied around our waists and to which we attached our knife scabbard on one side, our atlatl and a small pouch on the other side in which we could carry miscellaneous small items like soap and hairbrushes as well as the flint and steel for fire making. The girls put together an extra belt with knife and pouch for Treeya, then they filled it with the same items they had inside theirs.
I stood for a long time just staring and admiring my two mates dressed in their new outfits. Unlike the hair covered bulky wrap-around furs, they now wore almost form fitting shirts and leather pants that tucked nicely into their new knee high moccasins. "I'm not sure," I told them honestly, "I just know."
"Well, I will not worry about it then, I'll just thank you." Sheel smiled broadly as she did some parading around of her own.
I took the backpack-quiver out of the storage box and loaded it with eight arrows, four of each arrowhead type, and then I supplied Roya's and Sheel's quivers with a similar supply of arrows.
Thinking of the long journey ahead of us, I didn't want to carry any unnecessary items along with us, but I didn't want to leave our valuable items in an unattended camp either, so we secured the storage box, along with the extra salt inside a notch between two large boulders, and then concealed the opening. Because they were light enough, we did take a few extra jumpsuits, moccasins, and other small things we might be able to use for trading in the event the salt was not adequate. We also took the belt and pouch the girls had made for Treeya and a spear in the event she decided to join us.
While the women prepared dinner, I retrieved the waterproof tarp. My plan was to use the travois and three left over short poles from the long hut as a framework then utilize the tarp as a cover for a traveling hut. The tarp would be much lighter to drag than normal furs but would still be suitable as protection from the elements.
Both women displayed disappointment when they saw me carrying the folded tarp, but after I assured them I would rebuild our bathing pool after we returned they cheered up again.
After we had eaten and went to bed, I paid back my two little mischievous beauties for their treatment of me the previous night. As I turned from one to the other and having heard their words that they loved me, but even more importantly, they had also told me with their eyes, with their smiles, with their hearts and I knew it was true, and I was happy.
