They had been there nearly year, the drift had gone further but there was still no sign of the gold; perhaps that was why McKinley hadn’t returned, perhaps he was thinking that she was on a losing streak and why invest? She’d give up soon, he hoped.
The weather began to get colder, the animals fewer. They had a couple of wild meadows nearby and spent time cutting and sheeving the hay for winter feed. The first flakes of snow fell.
“Conference time” said Mary whilst they were taking turns to bath and wash each other. It wasn’t a normal shareholders’ conference, them all being naked. Thirteen year olds were married mothers in some states, she looked at her daughter and thought ‘not yet please God’.
Still, now there were three women, they all agreed, and if she wasn’t actually a part owner if the mine like her mother, she had a vote in important decisions.
“Conference time” said Mary “Is it time to give up? Maybe Papa was wrong, we haven’t seen anything, not a sniff of gold. McKinley must be laughing”
“I doubt that, until you give up he’ll be terrified you might find something”
“But we haven’t! We won’t! It’s hopeless!” Mary was depressed and frustrated and now near tears. Jesse ran across from the bath, Marie and Cavendish both noticed the slight bounce of her small breasts, the slight wiggle of her bottom as her pelvis began to take on womanly attributes. She hugged Mary and said:
“I vote to carry on, we must be close, we must be!”
“One for, one against. What about you two?” Mary said
“I need to think” said Cavendish, “let me sleep on it” And so it was agreed that Marie and Cavendish would vote tomorrow. For the first time in a year he opted to sleep alone. He hadn’t intended to hide away in a Californian valley for a year, but he had enjoyed the work, the mining, the company. If they moved on they might not be able to stay together. On the other hand there was no point in mining for a non-existent seam of gold. They all knew Crazy Pete who was convinced, with no evidence, that the seam had turned 90 degrees and that he would strike gold and be richer than Midas soon. He’d been saying that for years. Even McKinley took no interest in buying him out. He talked to himself, dressed in rags and dug with worn out tools. He was, as even the preacher had once said, crazier than a bitch on heat. The preacher was a pretty basic kind of guy, which was just as well considering his flock.
In all events, the weather made the short-term decision for them. That night it snowed heavily, by morning it had made it plain they were here for another winter.
Somehow, though, the heart had gone out of the mining. They still went to the tunnel and walked, and crawled in to the face; but their progress wasn’t as focused. Cavendish and Mary would sit in the dark and talk.
The winter got deeper, they ventured out less. One day Mary burst in, she called softly to Jesse, “Come, quietly to the door. Look! I thought I might have scared it away.”
