They had been there nearly year, the drift had gone further but there was still no sign of the gold; perhaps that was why McKinley hadn’t returned, perhaps he was thinking that she was on a losing streak and why invest? She’d give up soon, he hoped.

“But we haven’t! We won’t! It’s hopeless!” Mary was depressed and frustrated and now near tears. The preacher was a pretty basic kind of guy, which was just as well considering his flock.
In all events, the weather made the short-term decision for them. That night it snowed heavily, by morning it had made it plain they were here for another winter.
Somehow, though, the heart had gone out of the mining. They still went to the tunnel and walked, and crawled in to the face; but their progress wasn’t as focused. Cavendish and Mary would sit in the dark and talk.
The winter got deeper, they ventured out less. One day Mary burst in, she called softly to Jesse, “Come, quietly to the door. Look! I thought I might have scared it away.”
