“Gary?” she kissed his ear hoping to get attention. “Gary, look at me, please.”
Gary rolled to his back and looked into his wife’s eyes. He saw the hurt, the pain, and the fear in them but remained silent and waited for her to speak. He waited for her to tell him she was leaving.
“When Jeff was here this morning,” she started but had to stop when her voice caught in her throat. She tried to swallow the lump that suddenly formed as she tried again. “I won’t lie to you when Jeff was here this morning, I almost gave in. I...” she stopped to wipe a tear from her eye. “I can’t explain what came over me but I wanted to feel him. I wanted to know what another man would feel like.”
Gary closed his eyes and took a deep breath as he listened to his wife’s confession. He knew that no matter what had happened this morning, either in his office or in the kitchen of his own home, everything was about to change and there was nothing he could do to stop it.
“I was about to go to my knees before him but I ran instead.” Helen then rolled onto her back and covered her eyes with her arm. “I had a very hard time listening to your sermon this morning because all I could think about was what would have happened if I stayed.”
“You, you would have...” he couldn’t finish the sentence.
“He tried to blackmail me. He let me know that everything we have here – the larger salary, the larger house, the freedom to continue my work in the schools, could all come to an end if I didn’t cooperate with him.”
What Helen was trying to do by telling him this was to shift his attention away from his guilt and focus on something else. She still could not look into his eyes as she pressed on. “It was exciting to be alone in the house with another man. When he pinned me against the counter and told me what he wanted I almost came. “But you fled,” he said.
“Yes but probably not for the reason you might think.”

It was quiet for a long time until she finally heard him start to snore softly. Her own slumber wouldn’t come for a long while yet.
The last class of the day just ended and Lois was walking toward the exit when Heather Willet stepped next to her.

“You’re pretty good in Algebra. Would you mind helping me study for the final exam?”

“Please? I could really use some help and old man Finnegan is not very good at explaining.”
Lois had to agree with her on that point. She had a natural knack for mathematics so it was easy for her but she knew others struggled in his class. As she thought about what to do, she glanced at her wrist and saw the bracelet with the words “What would Jesus do” and she had her answer. “Sure. When would you like to get together?”
“Now is a good time. I mean, nobody would be at my house so there wouldn’t be any interruptions.”
“Ok, just let me text my mom to let her know where I’ll be.”
Heather’s house was only a couple of blocks from hers and the walk to the Willet’s house only took them a few minutes.
