Awakened by a relentless buzzing from the building entrance, Marta heard yelling quieted by three floors distance when it stopped. Glancing out the window, she saw Joe looking up at it. Beside him a blond man slightly balding spread hands in a plea pose, all she could see from a high perspective. They vanished into the building.

Joe knocked. "Are you descent?" he yelled through the door.

"Not enough, but come on in," she yelled back, at least the end part. Sitting up, leaning on pillows against the wall, she brought the comforter to her waist.

"Hey," said Joe looking uncomfortable.

"Hey," said Marta smiling beautifully back. She witnessed him relaxing and his true smile returned. His brother followed him inside. Having a similar nose and eyes, the brother's long thick strawberry blond hair brushed back to reveal a retreat as his pate grew towards bald. That and an essence in his eyes of distrustful discomfort constituted differences from his older brother. And he had a couple inches height over his already tall sibling.

"Marta, this is my brother Roger. Did he wake you?"

"What time is it?" she asked.

"Noon."

"It's fine. Hi Roger."

"Hey," said Roger with an uncommitted smile.

"I bought bagels and cream cheese," said Joe. "I'll brew some coffee."

"Sounds good."

"Roger decided to surprise me. He came all the way down from Minneapolis."

"I got here yesterday, but you weren't home."

"Where'd you stay?" asked Marta.

"YMCA," said Roger.

"This is my apartment," said Joe. "As you can see I have no room for you."

"It's cheap."

Marta laughed and Joe shook his head and shrugged.

"No, I mean the room I'm staying in. Weekly's even cheaper."

"What's going on?" asked Joe. "What the fuck are you doing here?" Emotions kept in check, only the words avoided neutrality.

"I..."

"I should call Mary," said Marta. "She might be worried."

"Who's Mary?" asked Roger.

"My roommate."

"Is she as pretty as you?"

"Prettier."

"Invite her over."

"Jesus Roger..." said Joe.

"If you don't mind," Roger responded complacently.

"Why not?" shrugged Marta. "She could use some good company."

"You're alive," Mary croaked having been woken up.

"And happy," replied Marta.

"I'm not keen on being trapped in the man's den," Mary responded to Marta's invitation.

"How about a picnic in Lincoln Park?" asked Marta on the phone but looking at Joe who nodded. "You could use a change of scenery." She cupped the phone and whispered. "His brother's here and he's cute."

"Alright goddamnit, give me an hour. Where do you want to meet?"

"Let's meet at the zoo entrance."

"Fine," Mary sneered and hung up.

Marta chuckled. "Quite contrary," she sighed.

"I guess we'll wait on the bagels," suggested Joe.

"Let's not," said Marta catching disappointment on Roger's face. "Right Roger?"

"I'm starved," he said and began cutting open a bagel.

"Do you mind if I shower?" asked Marta.

"Of course not," Joe replied. "What's mine is yours."

"Sounds ... nice," Marta smiled, grabbing her backpack. "Don't wait for me to eat."

Roger already chewed a bite.

"So!" grumbled Joe.

"I had to escape," Roger explained.

"You had one more year!"

"What would I do with a philosophy degree?"

"It gets you in the door. It increases your salary."

"I had enough. I should have gone to school somewhere else. Anywhere else."

"You could have done better in high school, got a scholarships, moved from mom and dad's shadow."

"And yours. Fuck you Mr. Lawyer."

"Jesus!"

"I probably should have taken some time and went wandering like they do in Germany," said Roger quietly, easing his brother's anger. "Maybe I might have stumbled on what the fuck to do with my life. But I had to placate mom and dad and fall in love with Carol."

"What about Carol? Four years you're with her..."

"Crazy, hunh?"

"Have you talked to her?"

"We stopped talking."

"You schtupped her best friend."

"I schtupped a lot more than Donna. But Donna was definitely a mistake."

"But Carol's such a lovely girl."

Blonde and blue eyed and corn fed, Carol looked the part of the farm girl she was except cuter and more petite. "Have you seen her lately?" asked Roger.

"Did she get fat or something?"

"Nah, she's more beautiful than ever. Even furious kicking me out of our apartment she looked beautiful, maybe more beautiful. For a fraction of a second she gave me that glance, that glance I love, that loving glance. I'm such a fuck up!"

"You'll hear no argument from me," said Joe.

"Fuck you, asshole, suck up. Sucking up to everyone, where did that leave me?"

"Bullshit. Don't accuse me of causing your mess of a life. And believe it or not it goes both ways."

"What are you talking about?"

"I showed you ambition which obviously you rejected. You showed me a player. I saw you seducing women. Every party you joined without Carol you had some bimbo in the corner. I hated that you cheated on her, but otherwise I wanted to be you."

"Really? I like pussy. I love to fuck. Variety rules. I figured you to be the selective type. I mean half the girls preferred you, but got me as second option."

"I'm a male, Roger. What do you think?"

"I think you should have said something. I could have helped. The sluts would have been all over you."

"Sluts, hunh? You're the slut. I respect women."

"Jesus bro, they're just human beings, as lustful and wanton as men. Being in awe of them gets you nowhere."

"You're right. But I enjoy respecting them even if it keeps me from fucking them. And what about Carol?"

"I don't know. If she fucked around she kept it well hid. I guess I'm a hypocrite because imagining it makes me feel a little sick and jealous."

"Definitely a hypocrite."

"So have you met Marta's roommate?"

"Yes."

"And?"

"She won't be easy."

"Not a slut, hunh?"

"I didn't say that."

"Depends on your definition," said Marta testily, wearing the outfit she arrived in, her hair in a towel.

"Sorry," said Joe.

"Whatever. Fix me some breakfast. She'll like you, Roger."

"Why's that?"

"She's angry too. And like you she wouldn't know love if it slugged her in the face."

"I've been in love. Maybe I still am."

"You sure?"

"Never mind. If she's a challenge..."

"Not up for it big boy?"

"It's not worth the work and if it's just a tease or some kind of game..."

"She's a tease alright. What about your love?"

"Yeah, she took time. It was worth it."

"There you go."

Two things became apparent during the visit to the zoo: Mary felt jealous of Joe and hated him. Otherwise they had a pleasant time. Even the cold breeze of fall didn't dispel pleasantness. In fact, as Marta used Joe to warm her and eventually Mary used Roger similarly, it helped.

Roger took center stage as usual. "Goddamn, remember that one tournament? Betty must have just given you a blow job and you come out all dazed with your pecker flying in the wind."

Bless Me Father 5 Prodigal

Bless Me Father 5: Prodigal By Deane Christopher Edited by Steve Zink "So, what gives? Have you had a change of heart?" Gabriella asked the former Catholic priest as the two of them went about the task of preparing dinner at the halfway house. "Have I had a change of heart about what?" Karen quizzically responded. "About informing the Millers that you're pregnant. I mean, even though you're only their daughter in a physical sense, there's no getting around the fact that...

Caleb 17 The prodigal Returns

As always my thanks to Neurparenthetical, whose untiring vigilance makes my illegible scribble readable. Any residual errors are left there purposely in order to give you guys something to do. Enjoy. – and please, whatever you feel about the story feedback is always appreciated. I can’t improve if I don’t know where I am going wrong. Caleb 17 - The prodigal return I was stunned. Over and over, I examined the memory. There was no doubt. It had been my power that had been in play. It appeared...

Prodigal Father

Inspired by the song, “Prodigal Father” by John Flynn. Thanks to Crkcppr for his early read and Todd172 for beta reading. Thanks always to my Sweet Inspiration blackrandl1958 for her encouragement, advice, and of course, her editing. John and Gail were both from broken families, with all the heartache and hardship that implies. Even before the divorces, they were forced to endure the accusations and recriminations their parents threw at each other. It was a rare night to go to bed and not be...

The Light Behind The WorldChapter 21 Prodigal

The birthday party was dazzling, dizzying and impossible. All the people we had seen working, as well as so many more behind the scenes, had completed the preparations and transformed the house and the grounds into a wonderland of light, color and music. There was a string quartet playing under a tent in front of the house. Down at the dock, the more flamboyant and energetic group we'd seen warming up when we'd returned played fiddle, guitar, banjo and harmonica, with a couple humorous and...

The return of the prodigal son part two

Note : This story is completely fictional! The return of the prodigal son part two by Tony Smith As would be expected the brother and sister who had just engaged in a spot of coitus were racked with feelings of shame, embarrassment, self loathing and a steely determination that it would not ever happen again. They stuck to their guns for very nearly two hours and then: “I am feeling very horny Liam; why don’t we use one of the master bedrooms?” Without warning Wednesday forced her hand down the...

Prodigal Daughter

Orange moon above the hills behind the town, icicles decorating every tree and garden lattice, miniature snowdrifts in the ornate pathway down the hill from the Morrisons’ house to the guest cottage where Maura had lately been banished, a dazzling cold white afterglow on every surface in the December night, the stray snowflakes dotting her coat and her hair, the bustle of the impending Christmas party in the house behind her but not a soul in sight ahead…Maura was chilled to the bone, but she...

Prodigal Son

It was a long Saturday evening when I walked back into the small studio apartment I shared with my little sister. Given how young she was at a budding 18 years old, her side of the room was all pink and covered in lace, while my side had a more austere and efficient look. There were two things that were similar about us : first was our shared passion for gaming and indeed both sides of the room were dominated by gaming setups, hers in a rainbow color that constantly irritated me, mine with a...

Prodigal Daughter

As the plane taxied to a stop beside the terminal, I asked myself if I could go through with everything. It had been four months since I had left this wretched place, my hometown, with memories happy and sad, a guilty heart and, unknowingly at that time, with a son inside me. There was nothing to regret my life here, I thought sadly as I picked up my handbag and walked to the door, except for two nights that had forever changed my life. And, in my darkest moment of despair, I wished for a...

“SO, HOW MANY DATES you got tonight?” Howard asked as he soaped up my face. I only do this when I’m going out for something special and tonight was a concert at the zoo. “Well, let me see,” I said. “There’s the wives, Melody and Lissa, and our girlfriend Kate.” “When are you going to marry her?” Donna asked as she watched, waiting for her chance to get her hands on my hair. “Kate’s special. She probably won’t want to join the partnership until we’re out of school,” I said. “We’re working...

WE GOT INTO LAX at eight in the morning before the rest of the team arrived so we could meet Kate and Wendy. After we got checked in by Copa Airlines, we went to the gate to meet the rest of the team transferring to the same flight. “No Ice Queen?” Coach Elliot asked. “She’s in London at the Olympics,” I said. “She sent these delegates in her place. This is Wendy and this is Kate. Coach Elliot.” “We all have our little entourage,” Coach said. “Welcome to Team USA.” About twelve hours...

AND THEN IT WAS OVER. Our new friends flew back to Romania. Team USA headed to California and we caught a connecting flight to Seattle. Lissa, Melody, Bree, and Whitney got back from London on Sunday afternoon and we spent a week recovering. For me, that meant painting. Kate and I went to the studio. I’d focused so much on racquetball in July that I felt I was months behind in producing the paintings for my show in December. I was finally happy with the sketch of Bacchanalia and was ready to...

OUR BIRTHDAYS CAME AND WENT. It was no big deal. We were too busy for more than a celebratory dinner. After Labor Day, life had accelerated. Kate and I spent as much time as possible in the studio, but one end was now stacked almost to the ceiling with the fall fashion line from Ice Queen Sportswear. Melody, Lissa, and our new part-time assistant Penny were ironing, hanging, filling orders, and keeping the books. We considered expanding the studio to a second bay. And Penny ... Penny was a...

I STOOD OUTSIDE Wendy’s door trying to get a handle on what I knew would be waiting for me on the other side. As soon as I’d made my initial proposal, the conversation and planning had been taken away and I didn’t get another word in. And I wasn’t finished. Wendy and I worked out a signal when she needed special time together. With my three other wives chatting and planning their solo weeks with me, she’d silently tapped the stone at her throat. I could see a range of emotions flick across...

LISSA AND I WERE ALONE at Opens. Our sportswear was on consignment in the Raquethon booth, though we had to swing by each day and replenish the stock. It hadn’t started snowing in Minneapolis yet when we arrived on Tuesday, but the temperatures were in the thirties at night and forties during the day. I entered the tournament ranked ninth by virtue of the points I’d won at Intercollegiates and World’s. I was lucky. That meant I drew a bye in the round of 32 that played Wednesday. I had the...

THE INVITATION to Party with the Pros said ‘dress to impress.’ Lissa and I were back in our black attire as we entered The Pourhouse at ten p.m. The party was already in full swing. We weren’t slated to play Sunday until ten and eleven in the morning. We figured if we didn’t drink and left at midnight, we’d be in fine shape. It was still going to be a killer on me, though, to leave my singles match and walk right onto the court for doubles. But I wasn’t stressing out over the matches. All I...

FOR THE REST OF OCTOBER and most of November, life was defined by the coming exhibition. I had six paintings in progress. Kate was in the same situation. Even though we got special treatment at PCAD, we did have class projects and papers due. College took another interesting twist. It was more like a laboratory for our careers than a classroom. We met separately with Doc Henredon at least once a week. He cross-checked our progress on the paintings and our progress in class. My Art and...

KATE AND I FLEW FIRST CLASS, non-stop from Seattle to Atlanta at Clarice’s insistence. We were treated like royalty and I even had a glass of wine. Kate declined. I don’t think they would have carded her. Clarice had told us we had an anonymous investor in our project. He was paying all expenses, first class everything, and for having the printing done. In return, he would receive print number one of each of our works. Clarice handed us a VISA cash card each and told us that we were to cover...

AFTER LUNCH, we went back to work. Gerhard seated us on opposite sides of a proofing table with direct, color balanced light. On the table he put a stack of my first Bacchanalia prints. I WAS TOO ANGRY to inflict myself on anyone else. I couldn’t go to my room because Melody and Lissa were having a special time. And here I was, standing in the hall naked. I knocked lightly on the Trips’ door. When it opened, I asked Willow if I could borrow a pair of pants and a shirt. Well, that was easy enough. None of the three of them were wearing anything. THAT WAS WHAT I WAS EXPECTING. I’m stupid in love, but I’m not always just stupid. Ever since Washington passed the Marriage Equality Act, I’d been expecting it. When the law went into effect last weekend, the newspaper had been full of the reports of gay marriages all over the state. I’d noticed Melody more often referring to Lissa as her wife. And Lissa had been doing the same. The news didn’t seem to be affecting my cock in a negative way. I pushed at her again. “Ohh.” “I take it from...

THE ORGY BEGAN PROMPTLY AT TEN. The boys were in bed. Mom and Dad were playing cards with Lexi and Jack. Hmm. Lexi and Jack. They were beginning to look more like a couple. I needed to check in with Melody about how she felt about it. I got the bathroom first and was told to wait in bed. I could hear the voices and laughter in the hall as one after another of the women in my life used the bathroom, showered together, and gathered outside the bedroom door. So, Lexi would become the boys’ grandma, which they already call her. But if Lexi married Jack, she’d also be the boys’ stepmom which means that their other stepmom is their stepsister.” We all giggled as we tried to sort out the relationships. “I don’t care,” Melody said. “Lissa agrees, Jack and Mom both deserve to be happy. THE CLICHÉD DESERT ISLAND was a mere suggestion of yellow sand and green leaves where two lovers came together. In the background, the world imploded, sucking the stars of space into its wake. My emotion laid bare on the canvas. Sunday night, I’d slipped out of bed after midnight, leaving my four queens. I’d gone to the studio in a fog—a dream that wouldn’t let me wake up. I HAD TO PAINT. I slipped out of bed early Saturday morning without waking any of my lovers. That burst that we’d experienced last night—that moment where Kate and I both wept our climaxes. It spoke to me. There was a word for it. I needed to find that word in the paint. I almost carelessly tossed a canvas on my easel, noting that it landed vertical. Fine. I clamped it and pulled my paints together. I couldn’t see the whole piece yet, but I could see blue—lots of ultramarine, fading to...

AWARDS WERE DELAYED because of the length of our match. There were still two pro matches to be played, but the crowd was already thinning. At seven we were called to the podium. We joined a bunch of other players, coaches, and fans to have a victory dinner and dragged ourselves to the hotel. I WENT TO WENDY’S ROOM after I’d put the boys to bed, trying to explain to them that Kate was going away for a while, but no, it wasn’t like when Meddy’s daddy went away. She and the Trips were going on an adventure and we’d hear from them soon. I said it with conviction—as if I believed it. Every time I looked at any of my lovers, I felt their incriminating judgment. I’d driven Kate away. I’d let her drift, hidden what I was painting, held back some portion of my trust. It was my fault that...

“FAMILY MEETING,” Melody announced after the boys were in bed. The four of us had been together every night, but we never had a family meeting in bed. We’d enjoyed some quiet lovemaking with each other, Wendy even surrendering to Melody’s attention and then devoting herself to Lissa. But in the quiet, after we’d settled and pretended to be asleep, the bed still shook with our mourning. We clutched each other, trying desperately to fill the hole Kate’s of departure. THE HOUSE WAS QUIET when we left Wendy’s room. Rio gave me a quick kiss on the cheek and said she was meeting a friend in the guest room. Mom and Dad lined up on one side of Wendy with Lexi and Jack on the other and I took the next picture with Century Link Stadium in the background and the Sounder’s band playing nearby. Finally, we all headed for Carmine’s. Wendy had scarcely...

THE RECEPTION WAS BACK AT THE HOTEL. Sandra had everything ready for guests by the time we were out of the receiving line. The four of us rode in the limo taking a long route instead of the direct two blocks to the hotel. We drove about a mile along the lake and through downtown with people on the sidewalks waving at the “Just Married” sign on the back of the limo. The two brides sat opposite Wendy and me and kept looking at each other and giggling. It was infectious. “Old Nebraska blessing...

MOM AND DAD HEADED BACK to Nebraska on Monday before I went to Doc’s summer class. Lexi was staying with Jack another few days, but decided she needed to be back in Boston before Mel and Liss got home from their honeymoon. Wendy decided that now that the house was empty, she would do a thorough cleaning. There were two other students in the specialized affresco class. Adolfo Mazzarelli was exactly like his name sounded—tall, dark, handsome, Italian. Only he wasn’t Italian. He’d changed his...

THE WORLD GAMES. It was the Olympics for sports that didn’t get an Olympic berth. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) sanctioned sports for international competition. They had to certify that there was an organizing body that kept an international rule book and had agreement from all member countries. But not every IOC sanctioned sport was played at the Olympics. Many were deemed too small or specialized to merit that level of competition. So, while the Olympics were held in even years,...

“TONY, YOU HAVE TO DECIDE what your final project will be and get it before the review committee.” Doc collared me after class. We were at the interesting point where we were trying to paint images on wet plaster and none of us were rushing to leave after class. It was so foreign for being just more painting. “When do I need that, Doc?” I asked. “I don’t even have a concept.” “The schedule is for you to file your proposal the first week that SCU is in session this fall. Classes start the...

“MR. AMES, MISS PERKINS would like you to come to her dressing room. Would you come with me, please?” I looked at Wendy, Melody, Lissa, and Bree. They flicked their fingers at me, so I went with the house manager. The show was supposed to start in ten minutes. There were flowers all over Allie’s dressing room. More flowers, I thought, than there were people in the audience. Allison threw herself into my arms as soon as she saw me. “Tony! I’m so scared!” “Allie, honey. You’ll be fine. This...

FOUR MONTHS. Four months! God damn it! She’d been gone four months. I was pissed as hell and so relieved to hear from her that my anger evaporated into hope. “Come home, Kate. I’ll come and get you. Where are you?” I already had my keys in my hand and was grabbing my jacket. For all I knew she was in Oklahoma, but I was going to go get her. Now. “I’m out ... outside,” she stammered. It sounded like she was shaking. Lightning lit up the window as I ran upstairs. “Yes. Outside where? I’ll...

THE BELL RANG at the studio. I’d finished painting over an hour ago and was staring at it while I tried to compose the story that revealed the picture. Kate was at the door. “I asked if I could come and collect you for dinner,” she said simply. “May I come in?” “Don’t you have a key?” I asked. “It’s not my studio anymore.” “It will be. When you are ready.” “Melody said when you disappear like this it means you are in your zone and something wonderful would come. May I see it?” “I don’t...

HOLY FUCKING SHIT! My mouth was open so wide, Melody splashed water into it. She pulled me to my feet, stepped out of the tub, and handed me a towel. I started to dry and she slapped my hands away. “That’s for you to dry Lissa. I’ll dry you,” Melody said. Lissa stepped out of the tub looking every bit like Aphrodite Anadyomene rising from the sea to walk into my arms. I would paint that one day. I focused all my attention on caressing and loving the woman who had just declared she would be...

“IF I DO THIS AS A COMMISSION, I won’t have anything to sell. All my work will be attached to the walls of the chapel,” I said. “Are you having second thoughts about being able to complete it?” “It’s not that,” I said. “Well ... maybe a little. I never expected anyone to take the whole project and say I had nine months to paint forty panels. But, I’m more concerned with what my agent has to say about me not producing anything salable in that time.” “We need to worry about that. You did a...

FIRST FRIDAY ART WALKS are a tradition in Spokane, a city with civic pride and a cool downtown. Clarice scored the Dormann Gallery for Kate, right in the heart of downtown. People walked from one gallery to the next and made a night of it. I doubted that there would be a lot of sales, but the gallery was busy from the time we got there about three in the afternoon. Jack left the boys with Molly in Seattle and joined Clarice and Paul, her lawyer. When she was comfortable that Kate was settled...

THE FIRST BATCH OF PLASTER was stabilizing for application on Monday after Thanksgiving. I’d have four weeks of painting before we left for Nebraska for Christmas. With Doc’s help, I got Morgan and Adolfo to assist me on the project. They got class credit and a stipend for their work and would be recognized at the dedication and in my book. We were using traditional techniques and they did all the plaster work, preparing my cartoons, and transferring them to the wet plaster before I got to...

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON, I was in the studio trying to make sense of my quarterly sales report and deposit slip from Clarice. I guessed it looked okay, but I had no idea what the heck I’d sold, how much I earned—other than the amount of the deposit—or what I still had available. And this report didn’t even include the showing in Vegas. I was about to shove everything in a drawer when Penny came in to do the Ice Queen books. Her job was a little slower now that we weren’t shipping as much from...

THERE WAS SO MUCH catching up to do. I hadn’t seen my folks since August. My life was focused on my project and rebuilding my relationship with Kate. Mom proclaimed that I was still too thin, and put a huge piece of hot Dutch apple pie in front of me. With ice cream. “Okay,” Lissa said after Melody had poked her in the ribs for the thirtieth or so time. “Everybody. My wife wants to announce the worst kept secret of the year.” She stuck her tongue out. Melody laughed and kissed her. She stood...

WE TOOK THE BOYS BACK to Seattle with us as Jack headed to Boston with Lexi to help her prepare to move west. We also took an entire extra suitcase filled with baby clothes. I had no idea Mom had kept so many of mine. Lexi promised to bring all Melody’s baby clothes with her from Boston. “Kate? Where are you going?” Lissa asked as Kate headed downstairs. “Uh ... to my room?” “Are you going to go back there now? Didn’t we resolve this?” “Can I? May I?” “Kitten,” I said softly, “won’t you...

RIO EXCUSED HERSELF soon after being thoroughly kissed by each person there. “I want to be home at whatever hour Matt comes dragging in,” she said. “Besides, I think this party is headed where I don’t need to go without his okay. Which, by the way, he will probably give, so watch out!” We all laughed and when she left, we started cleaning up the mess. With only nine of us at the party, it was easy to put the house back in order. I came in from taking the recycling out to find the seven...

IT WAS SEVEN-THIRTY I was depressed and starving. Stupid combination since there were people who really were starving. Melody, Lissa, and Wendy waited to have dinner until we got home. They’d fed the boys and after I’d hugged each of them, Damon and Drew went to their room to do ‘homework,’ as they said. “Third grade is tough and Damon is trying to set a good example for Drew in first grade. It’s so sweet I can hardly bear it,” Lissa said. “How do they feel about having a baby sister...

VALENTINE’S DAY WAS COMING. I was informed by my family that I would take a four-day weekend and would not be painting that Saturday. They had a schedule of who would be paired with whom on each of the four days. I was to go to the studio on Thursday after I’d finished at the chapel. Melody and Lissa would be together and Kate and Wendy would be together. “So, Friday you will be with Melody, Saturday with Lissa, Sunday with Kate, and Monday with Wendy,” Melody announced. “Um ... but ... um,...
