Chapter 24: The Gate
Friday, August 6, 1971
“She says they should be landing in about an hour,” I reported to everyone at the table after I broke my connection with Penny. “They must have left Honolulu in the middle of the night.”
“They didn’t fly through Honolulu,” Grace interjected.
“Lockheed contacted us day before yesterday saying that your new TriStar was ready. So I had the flight crew fly it to Washington to pick up Penny and the rest of your security team and then fly straight to Tapato with a stop in Mexico City to refuel,” Adriana explained. “That’s okay, isn’t it?”
“Yeah. We figured it was cheaper to keep it here since Tapato isn’t charging us very much for parking,” Grace said.
“That’s great!” I told them.
“Of course, we’ll have to house your flight crew here for two weeks, until we fly home. But somehow, I don’t think they’ll mind too much,” Grace added.
“Where’s Larry?” Captain Tab asked his daughter as she joined us.
“He’s still in the galley,” she replied as she reached for a biscuit. “Can you pass the gravy?”
“Is he coming up?” her father prompted.
“Don’t know,” she replied while taking her first bite. “When I left, he was washing dishes. Somehow, I think his main priority today is going to be finding a new cook.”
“Since you have so many more of your security team coming, if you like, I could help out in the galley,” Karla offered.
Before I could say anything, Amy said “Shelly and I could help her.”
I just stared at her for a moment. She wasn’t usually one to volunteer so quickly.
“What-t-t?” she asked. “Shelly’s a great cook and besides, we both want to go.”
“And I’m sure the rest of us wouldn’t mind helping out some, too,” Eve added.
“Wait a minute,” I told them. “Just how many of you are planning on going with us?”
After some discussion, it turned out that my four of my wives, Hanna, Abby, Ileana, and Sandy wanted to go. And if Abby was going, then her sister, Deedee and Hanna’s sister, Allie wanted to go too. Along with all three of my administrative assistants, Adriana, Grace, and Vickie. Then there was the Foundation team; my sister Nicky, along with Izzy, Amy, and Shelly. Then there was Rose and Eve who also wanted to go, along with Aida and Lydia. Of course Shelby said she needed to go to chronicle our adventure and Narvenia said she had been sent here to observe, so she was going as well.
“ ... and with my security team and me, that makes thirty-three. Can we handle that many people?” I asked Captain Tab.
“Easily!” Barbara replied before her dad could say anything. “The Ramona was originally set up for a full complement of eighty-seven officers and crew, so your thirty-three, plus the eleven crewmen we currently have, plus my dad, Larry, and me, doesn’t really put much of a strain on her. Of course, I know that Larry and dad want to add at least another half dozen or so crew, but until then, if everyone pitches in, we’ll be just fine.”
“So ... does that mean we can go” Vickie asked Captain Tab.
“Whoa!” Captain Tab said as he put up both of his hands with his palms facing out. “Hang on there, sailors. While Barbara is correct in that the Ramona will handle all of you okay; let me remind you that this is not a pleasure cruise. Everyone will have to work. And when we shove off, we probably won’t be back until we either find the ship or we run out of time. So it’s very likely that we won’t be back for thirteen days. Are you all sure you want to be gone that long?”
There was some general murmuring all around the tables as everyone discussed this new information.
“Captain Tab? Can we take some extra clothes and stuff with us?” Aida asked.
Most of the conversations around the tables ceased as they all listened for what he would say. After all, this was important.
“The general rule is one duffle bag per sailor. That’s because storage space on a ship is at a premium,” Captain Tab explained. “And I’ll advise you to take everything you might need in the way of medicines or feminine products, because once we shove off, there are no convenient drug stores in this part of the Pacific.”
No one challenged his statement or asked anything else as they continued their discussions.
“You know, I almost wish I was going with you,” Catherine said in a low voice. “If it wasn’t for Liz coming in, and all that will have to be done for the new consulate opening, I really think I’d go with you.”
“And you would be most welcome to come along,” I told her. “But I’m glad that you are going to be here to keep an eye on the company while I’m out there.”
I knew that Kip and Karla would go, but with my nine additional security folks arriving soon, I wasn’t sure if Beth or Luisa would want to go.
“I’ll go if you need me to,” Beth stated slowly. “But I’ve never been at sea for that long. I mean, I did okay yesterday, but for that long... ?”
“That’s fine dear,” Catherine told her. “I’m sure David would appreciate it if one of you stayed.”
“I’ll go with you,” Luisa said quickly. “I AM supposed to be watching out for you.”
That about accounted for everyone in the dining room, now for the others...
“Are you up yet?” I thought to Anna.
“Of course. I’m just not ready to come over there yet. I’m still a little queasy,” Anna thought back.
I briefly filled her in on what was happening and what everyone was thinking.
“I’m so sorry, Michael, but I think I’ll pass this time. It would not be much fun being out on a ship with you while I’m feeling like this. I am so envious of Mikeya!”
“Mikeya?” I asked.
“Yeah. She hasn’t had a single episode of morning sickness. Some women have all the luck!” she thought disgustedly.
“You just take care of yourself and our unborn daughters. I’ll be back soon. I love you,” I thought as I opened my heart to her for just a moment.
“I’ll miss you, Michael. Please be careful,” she replied.
“Michael?” Rachael asked as she slid into an empty seat across from me. “Would you think ill of me if I didn’t go with you?”
I didn’t answer her right away while I scanned her. I wanted to make sure I understood her reasons for not going. It turns out that she got seasick easily.
“Not at all,” I finally replied. “Are you okay staying here? Or do you need to get back home? I’m sure we can work something out to get you back to San Diego if you need to.”
“Are you kidding? Leave Paradise?” she quickly exclaimed with a smile. “No, thanks. I’ll be just fine here. And I have much more research to do on Lydia’s codex, so I won’t be bored. I do love it here. In fact, I love it so much, if Kalani will have me, I may never leave.”
That reminded me that I should check in with the queen. I found her and Mikeya together, about to go into another of their seemingly endless meetings. So I quickly explained what was going on, and how she might have a little more peace and quiet around here for a while.
“Not too long, I hope. And I hope you find your treasure soon,” Kalani said.
“We’ll miss you” Mikeya added, and then they were gone back to the business of running the country.
“Michael? We’ve talked it over and want to go with you,” Vickie said, apparently speaking for all nineteen of them.
That’s okay with me, if it’s okay with the captain,” I replied.
“Not my ship. Not my decision, Captain Mike,” he quickly replied, emphasizing the last two words.
“Goody!” said Grace. “We gotta go get packed. We’ll meet you on the ship shortly.”
With that, they all quickly turned and practically ran from the dining room.
I was just starting to address this “Captain Mike” business with Captain Tab when multiple shrieks started coming from the lobby. I quickly scanned and discovered that my security team had arrived just as the girls were leaving. The bedlam continued for several minutes as the girls all made their re-acquaintances.
Then my security team entered the dining room. They were all wearing an impressive array of armament and carrying green, military style duffle bags. No words were spoken as they lined up across the table from Captain Tab and me. When they didn’t say anything, I waited. This was their show. I did look over at Kip, but he had his eyes elsewhere. And she was standing at the end of the line closest to him.
“Michael, may I introduce the newest members of your security force?” Penny finally spoke. Then without waiting she continued.
“This is Serkia,” she started.
“How do you do, sir?” Serkia asked politely and surprisingly in very good English.
“And Vie.”
“Hello again, sir,” Vie said, also using proper English.
“And Pipiti.”
“It’s good to see you again, sir,” she said in almost perfect English. “And very much thank you for the wonderful automobile!”
The girls all giggled at the obvious ad-lib, however, Penny silenced them with a glance as she continued.
“And Shelia.”
“It is an honor to serve you, sir,” Shelia stated. I was impressed since she had not even heard of our language two months ago.
“And Nina.”
“Hello, Mr. Michael,” she said shyly.
“And Terry.”
“Shelia’s correct, sir. It is an honor to serve you,” Terry stated. No doubt she was showing off her superior language skills.
“And Mary Ann.”
Mary Ann looked at me but didn’t say anything for a moment. Penny looked at her sternly and the others whispered words of encouragement. Finally Mary Ann looked at me and said in halting English, “Thank you for, ah, allowing me to serve you, ah, sir.”
“You’re welcome, Mary Ann. And that was very good,” I replied.
“And of course, you remember Unevia,” Penny added.
“I am most anxious to rejoin you, sir,” she said quickly.
“Not as anxious as someone else I know,” I thought to no one in particular as I looked at the crooked grin on Kip’s face.
Rising and quickly going around the table, I hugged Penny to me as I said, “Welcome back, my beautiful Security Chief. I have missed you.” Then going to each of the girls I shook their hands (or, in the case of Pipiti, got a big hug) and told them how well they had done and how glad I was to have them with me again. There was some general clatter in a language that I didn’t understand, but Penny simply said, “Girls!” and everything became English again.
“And now, sir ... it’s been a long trip and I’d like to get everyone settled into their quarters and have a nice long bath, followed by a longer lunch and an even longer nap,” Penny told me.
“Unfortunately, Chief, I cannot accommodate you at this moment. Why don’t you all sit down and have some breakfast while I fill you in. We’ll be leaving Tapato within the hour and won’t be back for a couple of weeks,” I told her.
“Where are we going, sir?” she asked quickly.
“On a treasure hunt, boss. We’re going with Michael to try to find a sunken treasure ship.” Kip told her.
As we were talking, a woman I recognized as the manager of the hotel entered and made a bee-line to my table.
“Excuse me, sir. The queen would like you to contact her. Immediately. She said you’d know how.”
“What do you need, my Queen,” I thought to her before the manager had even left the room.
“An extra dozen hours in the day would be nice, but I’d settle for your arms around me tonight,” she thought with a sigh. Then immediately “I’m sorry, I was just dreaming. I just wanted to warn you that your Lieutenant Commander friend is trying to cause trouble,”
“What’s he up to now?” I asked.
“Well, he came in here first thing this morning, threatening my staff and trying to bully them into giving him a warrant for Captain Tab’s daughter,”
“Some people never learn,” I thought to her
“Do you remember meeting Mr. Coates from the State Department the day before yesterday?” she asked.
When I told her that I did, she continued.
“Well, I just called him and this is what he said we should do.” Then she proceeded to outline her plan.
“I’m sorry that this will delay your search even longer, Michael,” Kalani told me.
“Don’t even think about it. This is a small problem that we need to deal with before it becomes a big problem,” I told her. “Now, you get back to work and I’ll take care of the Lieutenant Commander. I love you! “
“I love you too, Sweetheart. Hurry back to me.”
I quietly filled everyone in on the plan and then quickly left the dining room, looking for a phone. I thought it interesting that instead of Kip shadowing me as he usually did, it was Serkia and Terry who followed me out.
After my lengthy phone call with first Mr. Coates and then an even longer call with the Secretary of the Navy’s Chief of Staff, I hurried down to the pier. I was just in time to see two Studebaker US6 2-1/2 ton trucks, obviously left over from World War 2, parked next to the ship while the crew used the small crane to load the eight pallets of stuff into the hold.
I knew that we couldn’t possibly need that much food, even if we stayed out for the whole two weeks. As if reading my mind, Captain Tab wandered over and leaning against the rail, proceeded to enlighten me.
“That, my friend, is why they’ll never let women serve on US Naval ships. There’s simply not enough room for all their stuff!” he exclaimed.
Amen!
We were still there, leaning against the rail and talking about our search plans when Captain Tab stood up straight and elbowed me gently.
