“Natalya Vasilyevna Antonova, please meet Larissa Sergeyevna Federova,” I said.

I laughed as the two girls instantly switched to Russian and I had to focus to catch everything that was said. Clarissa smirked and rolled her eyes, and I just shrugged. The gist of the conversation was hometowns, parents, churches, majors, and to Tasha’s obvious shock, Lara’s age.

“Perhaps we should switch to English so Sveta isn’t left out,” Tasha said in English.

“Mike looked like he was really struggling to keep up,” Lara said.

“He just doesn’t practice enough! His mother taught him Russian, but except at my house, plus the little bit Clarissa has learned, he doesn’t use it.”

“My mom and I use it occasionally,” Lara said. “But I pretty much only speak Russian to my dad and my step-mom.”

“She’s Russian as well?”

“Yes. He’d never have married someone who wasn’t Russian Orthodox.”

“Where are we having dinner?” Tasha asked.

“Chinese has become our meal of choice,” I replied. “It’s easy to get something that’s very good and follows the guidelines.”

“Then let’s go! Shall we take my Volvo?”

“Yes,” I replied.

We walked to the parking lot where, as usual, Tasha gave me her keys, and the four of us got into the car. I drove to the Chinese restaurant where we had a very nice meal and Tasha and Lara got better acquainted. I was very happy that they seemed to get along well and I hoped a nice friendship would develop, which would make it easier to have Tasha and her prospective husband as close family friends, should things go the way they appeared to be going. Of course, I’d thought the same about other girls before, especially Tasha, and things hadn’t worked out the way I’d expected.

When we finished dinner, we drove back to campus where Clarissa and Lara went into the dorm, leaving me to say ‘goodbye’ to Tasha.

“What happened to sixteen being too young?” Tasha asked mirthfully.

“She’s legally an adult,” I grinned. “And I had NO idea when we first started talking. I assumed she was eighteen or nineteen like all the other Freshmen.”

“I like her,” Tasha said. “She went to church with you last night and this morning, which is a very good sign, though she’s been away for a long, long time.”

“I know. That’s something for Father Nicholas to address, but to be honest, she’s Orthodox, even if she hasn’t been faithfully attending services. She immediately adapted to my fasting rule without any fuss, chose to go to church without me prompting, and hasn’t said or done anything which gives me pause.”

“And she’ll only be twenty-two or so when you’re ready to start a family, which isn’t too late.”

I chuckled, “Not everyone wants to be a mom by age twenty, Tasha!”

“And she’ll have her own school to be busy with, and it doesn’t seem as if she’s quite so needy as I am.”

“Needy?”

“What you call my desire for attention from you. My mom says I’m very needy in that regard, and I think she’s right. Do you remember how I craved your phone calls? And now your body?”

I laughed, “Does your mom know about THAT craving?”

“Yes. I decided to talk to her about us so that she’s prepared when my dad loses his mind. He is sure we’re sleeping together, but he elects not to officially notice it because we’re going to marry.”

“How is Sasha?”

“She’s fat!”

“Now that’s just not nice!” I replied with a silly grin.

“She’s doing fine and the doctor says her baby is fine and growing properly. She should have the baby sometime in the first half of June, as we calculated last Fall.”

“And Yaroslav Romanovich?” I asked.

“Has come to dinner three times, and is at the house this evening. I expect he will ask for her hand so they can marry before the baby is born.”

“There won’t be much of a honeymoon!” I chuckled.

“You are TERRIBLE, Mishka!”

“But it’s true! And they have to wait until after Pascha, because neither the betrothal nor the wedding can be done during a fasting period.”

“I would guess the Saturday before Ascension, which would be May 26th, two days after my graduation.”

That was going to play complete havoc with the party plans and possibly Maggie’s move, but there was no way I was going to miss Sasha’s wedding, if it happened. I would also need to attend whatever celebration was held for Tasha’s graduation, which would likely occur on that Sunday following the Divine Liturgy, conflicting with the gathering at my grandparents’ house for Liz.

“Just let me know,” I replied. “That’s going to be a hectic weekend as it is because Liz is graduating, too. But I suspect they really can’t wait if they want it after graduation and before the baby is born. I take it Sasha is happy?”

“Yes.”

“What about living arrangements?”

“They’ll live with my parents, at least until Sasha graduates. That will let Yaroslav Romanovich save so they can buy a house, and make it easier for my mom to help care for the baby while Sasha is in school and Yaroslav Romanovich is working.”

I chuckled, “And your sister gets revenge on your dad by having sex in her bed in his house!”

“You are SO bad, Mishka!”

“Tell me she didn’t have that thought!”

Tasha giggled, something she rarely did, “Perhaps.”

“I know the Antonova girls pretty well!”

“You do. Kiss me, please, and I’ll see you after Pascha.”

We exchanged a soft kiss and after Tasha drove away, I went into the dorm where Clarissa and Lara joined me in my room.

“You and Tasha are lovers, aren’t you?” Lara asked.

“And that’s my cue to leave,” Clarissa said. “See you at study group in twenty minutes!”

She left, closing the door behind her.

“Does Clarissa think I’m upset?” Lara asked.

I shook my head, “No, she was being silly with that bit of faux drama, but she did think we should talk about it privately.”

“I get the picture there is very little which you keep private from Clarissa, if anything.”

“True.”

“So, explain to me why you and I are standing here talking when you have a girl like Tasha available? A smoking hot blonde who clearly loves you, has obviously made herself available to you, is not only Orthodox, but faithful AND the daughter of a deacon!”

“I can’t check HER boxes,” I replied.

“I seriously doubt that,” Lara teased.

“I didn’t mean THAT way!” I protested, but I was laughing, too. “She wants a family almost immediately, and she is, as she described herself when I was speaking to her, too needy to have a husband who is absent or preoccupied with things other than her and her children. Waiting five or six years for kids is not on her agenda, nor is having a husband away from home for thirty-six-hour shifts during Residency when those kids would be born. She and I had long, long talks about this and concluded that she would be miserable, which would make me miserable, and there would be nothing either of us could do about it.”

“Divorce isn’t in either of your vocabularies, but you both feel that would be inevitable.”

“Sadly, yes.”

“Did she approve?”

I laughed hard, “You knew?”

“Mike Loucks appears to need not one, not two, but three «бабушки» to manage his life! I’ve met two, and I guess I’ll meet the third one at the end of the Summer after Jocelyn arrives.”

“I’ve been a serious project for Jocelyn, Clarissa, and Tasha for the past three years, as I mentioned when we were together that afternoon at Doctor Blahnik’s house.”

“How slow are we going to take this?”

“As slow as necessary to make it work, if that’s what we decide we both want in the end. The way I see it is we spend the next six weeks getting to know each other as well as we can, you go on your cruise, and when you return to Taft, we sit down and decide what we want to do.”

“Not, ‘I love you’, but ‘this will work for me’?”

“You seem to be even more logical and pragmatic than I am. And besides, REAL love isn’t something you fall into, but something you work towards.”

“Effectively an arranged marriage?”

“That was always in the cards for me, one way or the other. Tasha was my match.”

“So the future doctor got the hottest, sexiest, sweetest girl in the church assigned to him, and after sampling her delights, concluded he couldn’t marry her?”

“We concluded we most likely wouldn’t marry before we became lovers. Once we had that conversation, it was very simple to give in to what we’d lusted to do for years.”

“Give in!” Lara laughed. “Right!”

“Ask Tasha about that,” I grinned. “Tasha’s virtue was never safe from Tasha! She asked ME to preserve it for our wedding night, which I was faithfully doing until we realized that night might never come. Then she browbeat me into relenting on my commitment to her.”

“I think I understand how Tasha’s little sister got pregnant!”

“Clarissa told you?”

“Yes, walking back to the dorm while you said ‘goodbye’.”

“Tasha asked if you would be upset by us being lovers.”

“She would, because she sized me up instantly and appears to have given approval.”

“Actually, it was earlier. I simply said ‘I met someone’ and she knew the score. She asked about you being upset even before she’d met you.”

“How can I put this? You have some loose ends to tie up, and I’m getting the picture you want the rest of the semester and the Summer to do that before we have our talk. Is that accurate?”

“Pretty much.”

“I have $10 that says she has her eye on someone for when she moves here.”

“You saw him at church this morning — Nikolas Dmitriyevich. He was sitting just behind you during Sunday School.”

“Does he know?”

“Not yet! But once she moves here in about six weeks, she and I will reset our relationship such that she can pursue him.”

“That’ll be the world’s shortest pursuit! I can’t imagine any red-blooded guy resisting for even a microsecond!”

“Robby or Lee?” I asked with a grin.

“Any STRAIGHT red-blooded guy, you nut!”

“I agree.”

“As for tying up loose ends, I did walk into a situation with effectively zero information of any outside relationships. And clearly, if I was a jealous bitch, I wouldn’t have given you the ‘all clear’ for Sarah. Do what you feel you need to do, Mike. I have no claims at the moment.”

“And you are absolutely, positively, no question, OK with that?”

Lara smirked, “Just make sure you fuck her brains out and leave her begging for more; more she can NEVER have!”

“Didn’t you just say you weren’t a bitch?” I asked with a grin.

“No, I said I wasn’t a ‘jealous bitch’! There’s a difference!”

“Noted! My turn for a question. How sure are you about this?”

“About what? Us?”

“Yes.”

“Ask me at the end of the Summer when I’ve had time away from you to think it through. I actually think you’re very wise in that regard, because despite everything you see and hear, I am only sixteen. You’re basically asking me to make a commitment for the next seventy or eighty years based on our assessed compatibility. That’s not an easy decision, even if YOU seem to think it is.”

“Necessary, not easy,” I replied.

“Yes, but you’ve had the best part of ten years to work this out. I’ve had about ten days!”

“Very true.”

“And I do find your approach intriguing — you could casually fuck, and enjoy it, but once things looked as if they had potential for the future, you reset to dating and kissing.”

“You aren’t the first one to note that I treat girls I consider serious possibilities for the long-term differently. As you crudely, but succinctly put it, a ‘piece of ass’ versus potential spouse.”

“I’m curious, and I will not be upset, but you would have refused to fuck me if you’d thought I was a potential spouse from the get-go, right?”

“Probably. Or at least until I had a good idea where things were going.”

“Why is that?”

“It’s too easy to confuse sex for a true, intimate relationship, and it strikes me as a way to paper over issues that really need to be addressed before marriage.”

“Do you realize just how crazy this sounds, at least from one perspective?”

“Which?”

“I’m your girlfriend, or potential girlfriend, and you won’t fuck me, but you WILL fuck Sarah and Tasha.”

“In the twisted logic of my warped mind, that makes sense to me. Scary, right?”

“What’s scarier is that it makes sense to ME!” Lara said, with a soft laugh.

“Then I’d say we’re on a good path.”

“What about church? I think I need to receive the Eucharist at Pascha.”

“Father Nicholas just needs to talk to you about confession. I’m not exactly sure how he’ll handle it, but it’ll likely be what amounts to a life confession. And he’s really only going to care about the big things.”

“And exactly how do I tell the priest that we fucked and that I enjoyed it?” she asked with a smirk. “And that I want to do it again!”

“You don’t tell him that you and I had sex,” I replied. “He won’t want to know details. You just tell him that you’ve engaged in sex, but that you aren’t currently sexually active.”

“He knows you are, though, right?”

“And he has a pretty darned good idea who it is, as well, but he truly can’t say anything. When you and I start up again, he’ll know that, too, because he’s not an idiot.”

“And he’s OK with this?”

“No, of course not. But as both he and Father Herman back home have said, if they kick out any teenager or young adult who has engaged in inappropriate sexual behavior, they’d have empty churches. Father Nicholas isn’t one to lecture, either. And if he believes we’re going to marry, and are exclusive, that paints a very different picture.”

“So, license to sin?”

“Not even close,” I replied. “Acknowledgment that we have weaknesses and applying spiritual remedies. To be totally honest with you, I was FAR more active a year ago. And if you hadn’t come along, there was a very good chance I’d be celibate once the semester ended, possibly until I married.”

“You have that kind of self-control but don’t exercise it?”

“My weakness is pretty girls who want to have casual sex and with whom I want to have casual sex and who make themselves available.”

“So a guy, then!” Lara laughed.

“The most important women in my life tend to use the term ‘pig’ when I express that opinion! Teasing, of course.”

“Of course,” she deadpanned, but then smiled. “And if I have needs?”

“Then we talk about it, decide what’s best for both of us, and pursue that course. If we can’t come to some kind of agreement, then I daresay we have no business considering marriage.”

“A VERY good point. And now I think it’s time to study, right?”

I checked my watch, “Yes. See you for breakfast?”

Lara bobbed her head up and down quickly, we hugged, exchanged a soft kiss, and I gathered my books and notebooks so I could join my study group.

April 9, 1984, McKinley, Ohio

Clarissa was waiting for me when I returned from my run on Monday morning.

“Any problems?” she asked as we went into my room, closing the door behind us.

“No,” I replied.

I stripped off my running gear and got into the shower.

“No more modesty for you and me?” Clarissa asked.

“We’ve slept naked together for over a month, and made love! What’s left?”

Clarissa laughed, “You used to be careful about casually being naked, even after that night in Marietta.”

“Does that bother you?” I asked.

“No. I like looking at you and it tells me that you’re as comfortable with me as any girl you might ever be with.”

“Do you know what I’ve figured out?”

“Not unless you tell me!”

“Hmm, maybe it IS the chrism!” I teased.

“You’re an idiot, Petrovich, but you’re my idiot!”

“Thank you! What I figured out was that my mom was wrong. It’s not Jocelyn who is the risk if I have difficulties in my marriage.”

“And it’s a risk for me, too,” Clarissa replied. “I asked you to make love with me after Glenda and I broke up.”

“As close as we intend to be, it’s going to present a serious risk for both of us. I think we both need to commit to talking to someone if we feel ANY issues in either of our long-term relationships.”

“It has to be Jocelyn,” Clarissa replied.

“The girl my mom worried about?”

“It makes sense, given I expect her to be our closest friend. You even made the point about a new trio because your friend Dale seems like he’s going to end up in Washington State.”

“True. And if only she played for both teams, we might find a good solution!” I teased as I climbed out of the shower.

“Oh sure, I can see that. ‘Vladyka, I want to marry Jocelyn and we both want to have sex with Clarissa and I want to have kids with Clarissa.’.”

“Maybe not,” I chuckled, drying myself and then pulling on a clean pair of briefs.

I finished dressing and we left the room to meet Sandy, Pete, Fran, Jason, Lara, and Sarah for breakfast.

“If the Regents pass the rule change, do you know when it takes effect?” Sandy asked.

“Melody said immediately,” Fran replied, “though she hears someone is working behind the scenes to table the proposal for ‘further study’.”

“This must REALLY suck for you two,” Sandy replied.

“We hadn’t slept apart for two years!” Fran groused. “Even during breaks we’re together now.”

“When’s the wedding?” Lara asked.

“After Jason finishes his Master’s and gets a job. Getting married now complicates student loans for his post-grad work and my medical school.”

“How did you guys meet?”

Fran laughed softly, “He said he had a bottle of Jack Daniel’s. Two hours and half a bottle later we were a couple.”

“And that’s what you’re going to tell your kids?” Sarah asked.

“With a warning about the dangers of alcohol!” Jason said, shifting to avoid the elbow that Fran attempted to jam into his side.

“What’s the deal with tabling the proposal?” I asked.

“As a way to basically ignore it and let it die while being studied,” Sandy replied. “But Melody said her uncle contacted the university’s general counsel and let him know that tabling this would likely cause the ACLU to bring suit to prevent enforcement of the rules because they are discriminatory. That sort of forces their hand, because an injunction would mean NO rules about overnight guests. And he thinks he can get one.”

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 64 Am I Allowed To Be Nervous

January 20, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “I actually think that might be a good idea,” Doctor Mercer said when we spoke on Friday afternoon. “What kind of time limits would you suggest?” “I think I’d like to wait until I see you on the 11th. I’ll see Angie a dozen times by then, and I’ll have a better idea what to tell you.” “How is she?” “I know it might not have seemed like it, but it lifted her spirits and made her very happy.” “That’s good to hear. I take it there were no ill effects from...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 57 Domino Theory

January 1, 1984, McKinley, Ohio Chloe melted into my arms and molded her body against mine and we began swaying to All Out of Love. I very much enjoyed the full-body contact, but something just felt different. I realized that I, too, had been enthralled by our duet, but it had worn off. I wondered if that was true for Chloe as well. If it had, then she wouldn’t ask; if it hadn’t, and she did, I’d promised to say ‘yes’. And truth be told, I knew I wanted to feel the body which was currently...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 72 Status Reports

March 20, 1984, Rutherford, Ohio I arrived at the halfway house in Rutherford just after 2:30pm on Tuesday afternoon wearing my cassock to keep up appearances. I was shown into Mr. Gilbert’s office. He offered coffee which I accepted and we sat down in a pair of chairs next to his desk. “Is everything OK?” I asked. “Yes, it is. I just wanted a word with you so I could thank you for the help you’ve given Paul Reynolds. I started doing this six years ago when I retired from GE, and we’ve...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 7 Substitution

June 9, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “Unbelievable,” Milena sighed as she snuggled close. We were sitting very close together in bed, leaning against pillows which were against the wall, the sheet pulled up only to our thighs, and wine glasses in our hands. “What?” I asked. “That something so gentle and so slow could make me feel better than a night of crazy sex.” “Isn’t that what happened with Joel?” I asked. “You told me that mostly it was just making love then talking for hours.” “But we’re...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 29 All Grown Up

September 24, 1983, McKinley, Ohio On Saturday morning, I was up at 4:30am, quickly showered, dressed, and left Sophia in my bed while I went to the lab to take down the readings and complete the checklists. I was back about 6:10am and Sophia was still sleeping. I changed into my running clothes and headed back outside. As I ran, I thought about my conversation with Sophia the previous evening. I didn’t have an easy answer for Angie, any more than I’d had one for Jocelyn, and I was...

September 27, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “That was not what I expected, AT ALL!” I said when Robby, Lee, Angie and I left for karate on Tuesday afternoon. “Two kilos is distribution amounts,” Robby said. “Forget expulsion, he’s going to do some serious jail time unless he has a good lawyer who can arrange for him to cop a plea.” “The funny thing is,” Lee said, “he had such a rep as a partier, I wouldn’t be shocked if that was his personal stash!” “Oh, come on!” Robby exclaimed. “Do you realize...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 23 Labor Day Weekend Part II

September 3, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio “So now what?” she asked after about ten minutes of silence. A lot had run through my mind in those ten minutes. Jocelyn and I were two very different people, and I wondered if ‘Jos’ and ‘Mik’ actually still existed, or if they, too, had died as a direct result of that accident. And if they had, then what? Was there ANYTHING which could be salvaged from the past? Was Jocelyn even capable of having that kind of friendship? Her psyche was a complete mess,...

January 4, 1984, Rutherford, Ohio “How was New Year’s in Indianapolis?” I asked Dale when we sat down with our food at A&W. “Clara and I broke up,” he replied. “Whoa!” Jocelyn gasped. “What happened?” “It was building for the past few months,” Dale replied. “I’m not ready to be tied down as far as she wanted to tie me down.” “I don’t know,” I smirked, “I hear that can be fun!” Dale nodded, “Oh, it can!” Clarissa and I laughed and Jocelyn rolled her eyes as she had done so often...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 42 Kentucky for Christmas

November 13, 1983, McKinley Ohio Kimiko had spent the night with me on Saturday, and Clarissa joined the two of us to go to church. The previous night, when Clarissa had spoken my thoughts, we’d simply hugged, she’d kissed my cheek, and left, letting Kimiko know I was waiting for her. The previous twenty-four hours had been almost surreal, but also clarifying. But it wasn’t over just yet — I had my date with Tasha, which I felt was going to be equally enlightening. May 28, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio Later that morning, I stared at the phone, trying to decide exactly what I was going to say to Janey. My problem was, that even asking her to have lunch was fraught with problems. If we were seen together, AND it got back to Tasha, or worse, Deacon Vasily, that would be the end of any possible relationship with Tasha. And the more I thought about it, the more convinced I was that I didn’t want to do that. That said, I didn’t want to have the conversation with...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 76 Or Is It Triple Now

April 2, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “«Ты говоришь по-русски?»” I asked when I recovered from the double shock. “«Удивлены»?” “I don’t think surprised even scratches the surface!” I replied in English, not wanting to give up any nuances of my speech. “What’s your full name?” “Larissa Sergeyevna Federova. I was named for ‘Lara’ in Doctor Zhivago, but I go by Laura Sera Bragg. My parents divorced when I was little and both remarried. My mom changed her and my legal name to Bragg, which is my...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 5 Milena and Joel

June 3, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “You’re serious?” Milena asked, incredulous. “I am; you figured it out, and this is the talk we SHOULD have had.” She shook her head, “Now you have ME thinking about whether we should do this or not.” “Which was my entire point.” “Not to interrupt this moment of clarity,” Deb said quietly, “but is that invitation open?” I chuckled, “I’ll leave the answer to that to the pianist. Her opinion may have changed.” Milena sighed, “How the hell did a twenty-year...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 31 One Day At A Time

September 30, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Since the invention of the kiss, there have been five kisses rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind. Well, perhaps that was a bit of an exaggeration, but compared to other first kisses, this one was certainly memorable — a soft touching of lips, a light hug with Kimiko’s small, silk-covered breasts brushing lightly against me, and her hand lightly on my back. Kimiko broke the kiss, looked me in the eyes, and whispered,...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 47 Racial Purity

December 1, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “You really object to Emmy and Clark being together because they’re from different races?!” I asked, completely taken aback. “I’m sorry,” Kimiko replied meekly. “I was trying to describe how Japanese felt about mixed-race children, especially those of black American soldiers and Japanese women. But it’s really any mixed-race children or relationships, because they are not pure Japanese.” “So if you and I were to marry, and have kids who were half-Japanese,...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 17 Found Out

August 7, 1983, McKinley, Ohio The phone in my room rang late Sunday afternoon while Milena and I were relaxing and listening to music. “Hi, Mikey!” “Hi, Liz! What’s up?” “Guess whose parents came home WAY earlier than expected? Three guesses, and the first two don’t count!” “«Говно». Maggie’s.” “Right the first time.” “And?” “Grounded for two centuries, I think.” “Wonderful,” I sighed. “It’s worse, Mikey.” “How could it be worse?” “Her dad found the books you gave her and the...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 61 Make Love To Me Please

January 7, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “Thanks for the lift, White Boy!” Clark said as we got out of my Mustang. “Somebody had to drag your lazy black ass the last fifty miles, and I have sympathy for the mentally challenged,” I deadpanned. “Hey, Cracker, are you saying I’m dumb because I’m black?” “Not at all! You being dumb has absolutely nothing to do with the color of your skin!” “Fuck you, Honky!” “I love you too!” I grinned. We both laughed, shook hands, and with Clarissa following...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 9 Rules Infraction

June 25, 1983, McKinley, Ohio I awoke to someone pounding on my door and calling my name. A quick glance at the clock showed it was 2:50am. I quickly got out of bed, pulled on shorts and a t-shirt and went to the door. I opened it to see a girl in a robe. “What’s up?” “Cecilia said to come get you. One of the girls is really sick!” “Did someone call for an ambulance?” I asked. “I don’t know.” “Call right now. Use my phone. Where are they?” “243!” I hurried down the hall into the...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 50 Another End To A Semester

December 16, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Exams had gone well, and Clarissa, Sandy, and I didn’t have a Friday exam because of our work in the lab only had an evaluation, which we’d each received earlier in the week. We’d all received excellent reviews, which meant an A for the course for each of us. Our stats exam had actually been a breeze, as had the biochemistry exam. The psychology exam was moderately tough, but I was sure I’d achieved at least a B, which meant I would have an A for the course....

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 48 Is Something Wrong

December 3, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio The funny thing about temptation was that it only attacked our weaknesses. If we were strong, there was no real temptation. I had worked in the hardware store and the Quick Mart and I’d had plenty of opportunity to take money or items, but I’d never even considered it. There were fairly easy ways to cheat on homework and tests, but I’d never even given a moment’s thought to them beyond recognizing they existed. And I could go on and on about the things...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 62 Once More Unto The Breach

January 8, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “Is it always like that in the morning?” Clarissa asked. “Pretty often, but it doesn’t have the urgency, if you will, and it goes away pretty quickly once I get out of bed.” “Do you have ANY control over it?” “Limited,” I chuckled. “It pretty much has a mind of its own.” “That has to be difficult.” “Think standing in the altar, wearing acolytes’ vestments and seeing Tasha walk into church in a sundress.” Clarissa laughed softly, “She is gorgeous!” “And...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 75 Ive Had All I Can Stands And I Cant Stands No More

April 1, 1984, McKinley, Ohio Highly annoyed, I opened the door to find Bill, one of the nighttime campus security officers. “Hey, Bill; what’s up?” “Is anyone here with you, Mike?” “Another student, why?” “May I look? Just to see who’s here?” “If you tell me why.” “We got a call from an irate father that his fourteen-year-old daughter is in this dorm.” “Wonderful. Sure, step in; only Laura is here.” He stepped in and saw Laura, who was sitting on the bed. I realized given how small...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 74 Give Me A Break

March 30, 1984, McKinley, Ohio “Sorry about earlier,” she said. “My roommate was being a bitch.” “Something specific?” I asked. “She’s been on the rag ever since our second week here. Guy trouble. I guess she thought you were trying to use me.” “I can see why she would think that,” I replied. “You and I don’t know each other except basically by sight and name, I sang to you, and you came to my room.” “If I were totally clueless about life, I could see it. But I knew what was going on!...

February 27, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “Father, Angie had to withdraw from school for health reasons, and she’s gone home to Cincinnati.” “Lord have mercy! I didn’t realize she was ill! Do you have her home number?” I nodded and handed him a piece of paper, “You might want to speak to her mom first.” He nodded, “I’ll do that. She’s aware of Angela’s intention to be chrismated?” “Yes. They helped her find a church in Loveland to attend last Summer when she was home. They’re supportive, but...

Magic Medicine

MAGIC MEDICINE Christopher Halstead was at the end of his tether. He was only 50 years old but felt deep down in his soul that his useful life had come to an end. To understand why it is necessary to go back some twenty-five years. In 1992 Christopher married his childhood sweetheart Amy. He and Amy had grown up in adjacent houses; attended the same schools; and had had an unspoken 'understanding' from their teens. They only occasion they spent time apart was whilst they were at...

Good Medicine Sophomore YearChapter 26 Martyrdom

November 7, 1982, McKinley, Ohio “What’s up with you and Nancy?” Angie asked as we drove home from church on Sunday morning. “Nothing, really,” I said. “I’m taking her to dinner, but I’ll be back for study group. I missed last Sunday because I was at her house until fairly late. I can’t do that too often.” “You’re still interested in her?” “As a friend. If you recall, she had serious trust issues, and I don’t know that she’s past them.” “And if she is?” “I have no plans to have a steady...

Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 4 A Good Reason

June 1, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Wednesday at the Quick Mart was very much like Tuesday, though there were no deliveries, so I had time to work through a number of items on Mr. Sokolov’s list. That kept me busy, and away from Nancy except for when it was time for her breaks. She apologized again and I replied as I had before, just telling her to take her break. Maybe I was being a jerk, but I was honestly quite upset with her, and really didn’t think there was much to talk about. When my shift...

November 26, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio “So what did you say?” Clarissa asked after I relayed what Hannah had said. “I simply said I appreciated the offer, that I’d keep that in mind, then smiled and left the house.” “After Maggie gave you permission?” “I don’t need ‘permission’ from Maggie to do anything,” I protested. “And be serious, Lissa, do you think it’s a good idea?” Clarissa shrugged, “Is it all that different from Kristin? Or from Mindy and Emmy?” “That kind of thinking is a...

October 16, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “I started dating someone,” I said to Tasha as we relaxed in the whirlpool at Doctor Blahnik’s house. “You’re not cheating on her, are you Mikhail Petrovich?” “No. It’s not THAT serious, and it won’t be anytime soon, if it ever is. But I thought you should know because we promised complete truth and complete honesty. I don’t want any misunderstandings.” “May I ask about her?” “Her name is Kimiko Mei Takahasi. Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 15 Zenos Paradox

July 23, 1983, McKinley, Ohio Just as I had when Nancy told me that her mom had put her on the Pill, I missed a shift due to being completely surprised by Maggie’s question. I recovered enough to find the correct gear, and willed my heart to stop beating rapidly. The silence was deafening, but I needed to think about how I could answer her question. I wasn’t sure I knew the answer, but saying that seemed lame in the extreme. Almost immediately, I realized that I really shouldn’t have been...

July 28, 1983, McKinley, Ohio On Thursday evening I was sitting in my room, practicing my guitar after having spoken with Tasha and confirmed our date for Sunday. Just after 9:00pm, there was a knock at the door. “It’s unlocked! Come in!” The door opened and Milena walked in, closing the door behind her. “Hey!” I replied. “What’s up?” “Got some time for me?” “Always. Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 71 Spring Break Part II

March 15, 1984, Gettysburg and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania “You’re OK?” Clarissa asked when she and I got out of bed on Thursday morning. “Yes. Just kissing was fine, Lissa. Let’s get our showers and meet Jocelyn. We need to get on the road by 6:30am so we can be in Philadelphia by 10:00am.” We both quickly showered and dressed, then we met Jocelyn in the hotel lobby. Did that kiss bother you?” I smiled, “Not the way you mean. It was just, well, to be blunt, fighting a reaction. And losing.” Clarissa laughed softly, “I know. I felt it when I spooned. Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 12 Conflagration

July 5, 1983, McKinley, Ohio As I showered after karate, I wondered exactly what Angie had meant when she said that she’d changed, and what that meant for the future. Angie had told me that her counselor had advised against starting a relationship, so perhaps this was just Angie’s way of telling me that what Clarissa had suggested might be true — that Angie was playing the ‘long game’ and this was simply the next step. That made more sense than anything, but it also meant I needed to be...

Mike told me you were going to hang out with us tonight.” “Do you drink wine?” Becky laughed, “My pastor would have a cow, but he’s not here!” Milena laughed, “And shacking up with Mike, THAT would be OK?” “Well, no!” Becky laughed, blushing slightly. Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 21 Back to Class

August 28, 1983, McKinley, Ohio When I got up on Sunday morning, I showered and dressed, and then Kristin and I left my room and I found a note from Angie on the corkboard next to my door. It said she was getting a ride to church from the same woman who had picked her up the previous night and I shouldn’t wait for her. I shrugged, locked the door, and gave Kristin a quick kiss. She headed down the hall towards her room and I walked over to the elevators and pushed the ‘Down’ button. An...

In other words, you made me promise not to do it even if you changed your mind! And I made that promise!” “I can’t change my mind?” “You were very clear that I was responsible for you NOT doing that.” “But isn’t that up to me?” I nodded, “As an adult, in charge of her own decisions, it is. But you extracted that promise...

October 14, 1983, McKinley, Ohio “I’m worried about Angie,” I said as Clarissa, Melody, and I made our way back to the dorm from the Chancellor’s office. “I know you told the detective that you have no idea where she might be, but do you have ANY thoughts?” Melody asked. I shook my head, “If she wasn’t with her friend and she wasn’t at church, and her counselor hadn’t heard from her, then no, honestly, I have no idea. In fact, I was sure that win or lose, I’d win, from a certain perspective. “No, that’s not it...” I started. “Then let’s play!” “Are you sure?” She nodded, “I can’t think of a more fun way to celebrate my birthday!” I could, and I was sure that what I was thinking was exactly what she was thinking, and she was just...

May 6, 1984, Rutherford, Ohio “I’m curious,” Clarissa asked quietly, “but what about a patronymic in this case?” “Sasha hasn’t said,” Tasha replied. “Technically, it would be some form of Timothy, because Timmy Aston is the baby’s father, but I don’t think she’ll do that. She really could pick anything.” “What happened with the baby’s father?” Clarissa asked. “My dad, Timmy’s dad, and two attorneys worked out the deal. June 5, 1983, McKinley, Ohio My alarm rang on Sunday morning and when I reached over to shut it off, Milena groaned softly, stretched, and turned to face me, her glorious breasts rubbing against my chest. “Hi,” she said sheepishly. “What’s wrong?” “Nothing! That’s just it. Nothing is wrong. Good Medicine Junior YearChapter 24 Natalya Vasilyevna Antonova

September 3, 1983, West Monroe, Ohio Tasha was very quiet on the drive home from Jackson Lake, and I wasn’t sure what to say to her, so I stayed quiet as well. When we arrived at my house, we exchanged a perfunctory kiss. “Are you OK?” I asked. “Yes,” she replied. “I’ll see you tomorrow at church.” I got out of the Volvo and went into the house. December 17, 1983, Rutherford, Ohio After Vespers, Clarissa, Jocelyn, Tasha, and I went to Lou’s diner in Rutherford for dinner. “Is this Mike’s nightmare?” Jocelyn teased. “Or Mike’s ultimate fantasy?” “The three of you would be a nightmare,” I said flatly. “It’s bad enough to have ONE woman telling me what to do! January 14, 1984, Loveland, Ohio On Saturday morning, after breakfast, I’d said goodbye to Clarissa and gotten in my car for the drive to Loveland. The ninety minutes in the car gave me my first real time alone since returning to campus. Clarissa was doing OK, and I’d managed to spend a few hours over the course of the week with Sophia, and had a chance to be the octopus for Kimiko. It was an interesting dynamic, because Kimiko and I hadn’t been going out as a couple, so to outsiders, it...

April 5, 1984, McKinley, Ohio Students from all over campus came up to shake my hand, pat my back, or offer thanks. When Clarissa and I, and our close friends, left the auditorium we were confronted by Reverend Saddler. “I’ve never seen a more disgusting performance by an alleged clergyman in my life!” he declared. I shrugged, “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you’.” “That is...
