"Is this guy bothering you?" a male voice said.
I released Melissa's wrist and turned to stare in the faces of Matt and Mark.
"What are you doing to my girlfriend?" Mark said.
"Just talking," I said.
"Doesn't look that way," Matt said. "Looks like you were hassling Melissa. You give trouble to the girlfriend of my friend, you give trouble to me."
"Okay," I said recognizing the threat. I faced my palms toward them in a harmless gesture.
"We don't want you around Melissa," spoke Matt for both of them.
"We're both in gymnastics," I informed.
"Then quit."
I laughed. I shouldn't have done it in front of them but I couldn't help it. There was no way I would quit.
Matt was faster than I expected. He grabbed me from behind under my arms and held me tight. Mark moved forward and I predicted pain.
"Let him go!" rang out Coach Carson's voice.

Coach smirked then said, "Let's go!"
Matt and Mark sat as though they dreaded VP Henderson's office. I sat confident that I would be exonerated once again. Coach Carson was my witness. Melissa was with us this time and she fidgeted.
"So what brings you to my office on such a sunny day," said Henderson. "I certainly would prefer to be outside in the sunshine."
"Can I talk first?" asked Melissa to Henderson. She looked at Carson and appealed. "Coach?"
"Go ahead, Melissa," said Coach.
"I've known Jack a long time. He keeps asking me out and I keep telling him 'no'," she stated.
Where was this going? I had a bad feeling about this.
"He's gotten more aggressive and this time he grabbed me. Fortunately Matt and Mark arrived and forced Jack to let me go."
The mood of the room changed instantly. Matt and Mark looked at me with goofy smiles. Coach's face expressed shock. My stomach dropped to the floor and seeped into the carpet which would make it difficult to retrieve.
"Melissa!" said Coach obviously trying to hold her composure.
"You came at the end, Coach. You didn't hear," Melissa said.
"Coach?" Henderson said.
"Matt held Jack. Mark was about to punch him."
"We're tired of him harassing Melissa," said Matt. "He needs to learn a lesson."
Mark nodded eagerly.
"I don't want Jack suspended," Melissa said.
"I decide that," interrupted Henderson.
"He's a good guy but he has enough girlfriends," said Melissa. "He doesn't need me too."
That statement brought curious looks from everybody else.
"Jack?" said Henderson.
"I promise to stay away from her," I said.
"We both do gymnastics," Melissa added, "but that's all professional."
"Nothing happens there," Coach said. I guess she saw where things were headed.
Henderson said, "So we can go back to everyone being civil with each other?"
Everyone nodded including Coach.
Coach and Melissa were late to practice. I imagine Coach gave Melissa a verbal scolding for lying to Henderson.
"Jack?" said Coach during practice. "Can you stay late after you get dressed? I need to talk to you."
"Sure, Coach," I replied.
