BEEEEP BEEEP BEEP. In a moment's notice. Alison went from comfortable slumber to shock as her alarm began screeching at her. For a moment she had nothing but her instincts of fight or flight and was ready to attack her assailant. The offender, a small black rectangle with red lights, indicated that the day was Monday, and the time was 8 am. Alison, having partially recovered from the shock, reached out and began pressing buttons on the little machine until it shut its' equivalent of a mouth. I shouldn't have set it to be so loud, she thought to herself, but I can't risk being late on the first day. After 4 years of study and frustration and finally graduation, Alison had secured an internship, no less than a paid internship with benefits, at a prestigious institution specializing in botany. In fact, the place was unique as it was host to several small bio-domes, replicating environments around the globe, and even creating new ones. While the Rocky Mountains Botanical Institute had yet to create any major breakthroughs, it regularly provided smaller discoveries and insights that justified their funding.
Alison had an hour to get on campus, but that hardly was an issue as she was residing in an apartment building owned by the Rocky Mountains Botanical Institute, literally across the street. She had just moved in a week before, so the place was still unfamiliar, but her entire life she spent organizing and preparing, so everything was ready for her. Her change of clothes lay out on the table, formal but not too formal as she was inevitably going to spending time both inside a laboratory as well as among the soil. She grabbed them and headed to the bathroom. She placed the fresh clothes on the sink and turned on the warm water in the shower. Alison rapidly then stripped her pajamas off, because while she had all the time in the world, her anxiety got the better of her. She calculated that there was no time to wash her hair so she put on a shower cap and hopped in.
Dome 8, Dr. Ella Smith. Dome 8, Dr Ella Smith. Dome 8, Dr Ella Smith. She repeated that information in her mind over and over as if it was a phone number that she couldn't write down. She slathered herself with soap and rubbed frantically. Years of work were going to be paid off. Sure, this was an internship, but it was also a foot in the door for her. Any amount of experience she would gain here would translate to career success, and if she performed well enough, she might even get a permanent position here. A simple lab assistant job here translated to three professors' salaries. She might even continue onto her master's while here, and gain both the prestige and the additional financial incentives of being a full time researcher.
What was supposed to be a 20 minute shower was unknowingly cut down to 10 minutes, but it was hardly an issue as her excitement and anxiety greatly improved her efficiency. And, truth to be told, she had been religiously cleaning herself daily since she moved in, aiming no less than perfection on her first day of what could be a long career. As she had shut the water down, she reached for a towel and dried rapidly and thoroughly. All that was left was to put on her clothes, get a quick breakfast, a brushing of the teeth, and then make her way down to her new work place.
As it turned 8:40, Alison had finished all she needed to do and was already heading out of the door of the building. All I have to do is head to the dome... Wait, which dome was it?! She combed throughout her mind, trying to figure out the number. The bio-domes were arranged into sets of six, forming a hexagon with one large building in the middle. The central building was certainly not where she needed to go, but the building provided many services, including additional storage, lab space, conference room, a cafeteria with a bagel place, and most importantly for Alison, administrative services. I might get some help there, she thought. But to her time was running out and she had to make a decision. Take a gamble and head to a dome, or risk losing time asking for help.
