Actually, Shelly had no intention of stopping off for Mark when she started her drive to the airport. But, when she saw him in the yard watering the flowers, she was struck with how good it would be to give him a memorable afternoon. Turns out Shelly was a pretty nice kid, too. It just wasn't a social handicap for a girl, especially a girl who looked like she.
The drive to the airport went quickly. Before he knew it, Mark was being strapped into the back seat of the glider. He was impressed at how efficient and in control Shelly was as she made the preparations for the flight. She spoke to the older man who would pilot the tow plane as an equal, and he clearly was treating her not as a hot babe teenager, but with real professional respect. Both gave a careful inspection of the glider verifying that everything was shipshape.
As she climbed into the glider, Shelly pointed out the intercom that she could use to talk to him while in flight. Her cockpit was completely separate from his, so he had wondered how they would communicate. She emphasized again that he was just to sit still and not try to do anything but enjoy the flight. Mark felt a little nervous as the tow plane began to drag them forward. The glider bounced ungracefully along the runway, then jerked airborne. They continued to lurch from time to time at the end of the towline. Then Shelly said "Here goes!" and the plane cut them loose.
Mark was in ecstacy! The instant the glider was on its own, everything went smoothly, and as the plane pulled away, peace and quiet reigned. Mark had been in planes before, but nothing matched this! The glider swooped and soared on the thermals. The view was spectacular. "Are you having fun?", Shelly said. Mark could only give a dopey grin and an emphatic nod. "I can't hear nods you know!" Mark laughed. "I'm having a great time", he said.
They continued to soar along. This was the greatest experience of his life. Then, suddenly, he heard a loud sound. It was like someone was tearing a heavy piece of cloth. "What's that?", he said. He could see the tension in Shelly's posture. "Hold on, I'm checking." Suddenly the sound recurred, even louder than before. "Mark, we have a problem. The right wing is tearing off. I'm going to have to bring us down. I'll try to find an open space, but there are a lot of woods below us, so it may be tough. I know it's ridiculous to tell you not to worry, but you need to try to relax. I'll do everything I can to get us down safely."
The next few minutes were a total blur to Mark. He could feel the unsteadiness of their wounded craft. He saw the treetops coming closer and closer. He felt a jerk, heard a horrible crashing sound, and then oblivion.
"Mark! Mark!" The words came through a fog. He could hear the fear and tears in Shelly's voice, and wanted so badly to take them away. But he could barely force his eyes open, and when he did - the pain! "Mark, are you all right?" "No, my leg hurts. I've never felt so much pain!" He looked up at Shelly. There was a cut on her forehead, and blood and tears were streaming down her face. Her shirt was torn, and he could see bruises on her arms.

"I know, I'm just going to have to scream the whole time we're doing it" And so he did. It was absolute agony, but eventually he found himself lying on a flat surface. His leg hurt so much!
"Where are we?" "The glider is caught in some trees. I was able to pull a section of the broken wing and wedge it among some big branches. I thought it would be better than being on the ground. Mark, your leg is broken. It looks like a simple fracture, but I have to pull the bone back in place. It's going to hurt terribly."
"OK, I'll just have to deal with it", he said. "I'm going to have to take your shirt off", she said. "I found a couple of branches to make a splint, but I need something to tie them with, and my shirt isn't enough. I'll cut it off you, so you don't have to move so much."
