It was Saturday and there was a dance that night. I didn’t want to go, but my friends insisted. I wasn’t in the best mood that night and I wasn’t very sociable. I sat as a table, almost asleep. Lance was actually having fun, I noticed. Joey and Chris, along with Justin were always very hyper. But me, I was bored out of my mind.
“Justin, cheer up,” Joey said, coming over to sit. “What’s wrong?”
“Everything,” I muttered.

I sighed. “Nothing.” “What’s stuck up your butt?” Justin demanded.

I looked at them. “To get you off my back.”
He shrugged and rose. “You don’t know what you’re missing!”
“Yes, I do,” I replied. “Trust me.”
I sat there a little while longer and then I got up and went to the bathroom. I splashed some cold water on my face and looked into the mirror.
“God, Jonas, lighten up,” I said to my reflection.
A boy that u recognized from one of my classes came out of one of the stalls. “Boy, you look like hell,” he said.
“Hey, Rick,” I greeted. “You can tell, huh?”
“It’s that obvious.”
“My friends insisted, or else, I’d have stayed home,” I said.
“Well, if you need to get away, look me up,” he said.
“Thanks, Rick,” I said.
He left and moments, later, I went back to my table. I sat there for a long time before someone sat a glass of punch in front of me. I looked up and there was a beautiful girl standing in front of me. She was a beauty, with long blonde hair and blue eyes that seemed to look right through you. Her breasts were large. A D-cup, I guessed.
“You look like you could use some company,” she said.
I looked at her. “Oh, yeah?”
She nodded. “Is this seat taken?”
“No,” I said. “Please, sit.”
“Such a gentleman,” she said, sitting.
I took a drink of the punch that she had given me. It tasted funny, but I didn’t give it any thought.
“I’m Christy,” she greeted.
“Jonas,” I followed.
We talked for a long time and then she excused herself and went to the ladies room. I rested my head in my hand and soon, I fell into a deep sleep.
When I woke up, I was in the back of a pickup truck. My head felt like a ton of bricks fell on it. I sat up and looked around. Lying beside me was Christy. All I had on were my jeans. I looked around and found my shirt. I turned and woke Christy up.
She opened her eyes and looked at me. She smiled. “Hey, baby.”
“What happened?” I asked her.
She smiled and kissed me. “We had one hell of a night. Do you need a ride home?”
“No,” I said. “I’ll walk.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah.”
“All right,” she said.
We climbed out of the truck and she got into her truck and drove off, leaving me standing there, dazed and confused. I realized that I was standing there in the school parking lot. I began the walk home, which normally was a few blocks away, but today it seemed miles away. Halfway there, I had to sit on the curb because I grew dizzy and I felt sick. I rested my head in my hands and closed my eyes. I thought I heard a car pull up along the curb, but I wasn’t sure until I heard a familiar voice.
“Jonas?” I looked up and it was Lance and the others.
“Where in the hell have you been?” Justin demanded. “We’ve been looking everywhere for you.”
I only stared at them. I attempted to get to my feet, but I stumbled and fell against Lance. He and Justin caught me.
“Are you all right?” Joey asked me. I was quiet.
“Aren’t you going to say something?” Chris asked and, again, I didn’t reply. They looked at each other and then back at me.
“Jonas?” Lance said. He sighed. “Come on. Your mother is worried sick.”
“Wait,” I said. They looked at me for a moment. “What happened last night?”
“You tell us,” Chris replied. “We looked for you and it was like you vanished. We couldn’t find you anywhere.”
“Did you try the parking lot?” I muttered.
“What?” Joey said.
“Nothing,” I said. “I wish I could remember, but I can’t.”
“You don’t know where you were last night?” Chris asked, looking at me like I was crazy.
I shook my head. “The last thing I remember, I was talking to Christy and . . . ”
“Christy Lewis?” Joey asked. I nodded. “She’s trouble, man. You’ve got to remember something.”
“I don’t,” I said. “I wish I did.”
“Where were you this morning?” Lance asked.
I looked at him for a moment. “School parking lot.”
“The school parking lot?” Chris said. “You are lucky the cops didn’t pick you up.”
“I suppose,” I said. They took me back to my house in Chris’ car and my mother went ballistic. “Mom, I’m fine,” I assured her. “Go to work.”
“Are you sure, Honey?”
“Yes,” I promised. “Go.”
“All right,” she said. “You guys take care of him?” she asked the guys. They nodded. “All right. Bye, Honey.”
When she was gone, the five of us sat in the family room.
“God, I wish I could remember something,” I said.
“Do you remember what happened after you talked to Christy?” Lance asked. “Did she give you something?”
I thought for a moment. “Just a glass of punch,” I said. “Then she went to the bathroom and never saw her again until . . . until this morning.” My eyes widened and I looked at them. “You don’t think we . . .?” They looked at each other. I looked at Joey. “Would she go that far?”
“I wouldn’t put it past her,” he replied.
“My God,” I muttered. The phone rang. It was Christy.
“Hey,” she said. “How are you feeling?”
“Like hell,” I said.
“It can’t be that bad,” she said.
“Christy, what happened last night?” I asked her. “What did you give me?”
“Punch,” she replied.
“What was in it?” I demanded.
“Just a spike,” she said.
“Of what?”
“Does it matter?” she asked.
I sighed. “You’re not going to tell me, are you?”
“Nope,” she said.
“Did anything else happen?” I asked her.
“You mean did we fuck?”
“Did we?”
“You were great,” she said. “Best night of my life.”
“What?” I said.
“You were the best I ever had, Jonas.” I remained quiet. “Do you mind if I come over later?”
“Yes,” I said, firmly. “Christy how could you?”
“Come on, Jonas,” she said. “It’s not that bad.”
“But what if…?”
“Don’t worry,” she said. “I’m on the pill. I’ll talk to you later, okay?”
“Sure. Bye.”
“Bye.” We hung up.
“Well?” Joey asked.
I stared at him for a moment and he knew the answer. “She says she’s on the pill,” I said. “Oh my, God,” I said, falling back into my chair.
Later, Christy did come over and she talked me into going to a party at her friend’s house. We took my father’s old car. There was music blaring when we arrived and the moment I was inside, someone shoved a glass full a beer into my hand.
“No, thank you,” I said and tried to give it back.
“Drink up, man,” he said. “There’s a lot and we don’t want it to go to waste, do we?” he laughed. “I’m Max.”
“No, thank, Max,” I said. “I don’t drink.”
“What?” he cried. “You don’t drink? Here we go again,” he muttered. “Hey, Steve! This boy says he doesn’t drink!”
“Does he smoke?” I heard from somewhere in the crowd.
Max looked at me. “Do you smoke?”
“No,” I replied.
“No!” Max yelled back.
Moments later, a big guy, twice my size, appeared in front of me. “Why in the hell are you here if you don’t drink or smoke?” he demanded.
“I came with Christy,” I said.
He laughed. He took the small class of beer from my hand and replaced it with a larger one. “A hundred dollars says you can’t drink all that,” he challenged. “Straight.”
“No. I—”
“Wimp!” somebody shouted.
I looked at Christy. She smiled and nodded. I looked at everyone, my face and ears burning with humiliation. I took a deep breath and brought the glass to my lips and drank every drop. Everybody cheered and Steve patted me on the back so hard it nearly knocked me down.
