Rachel and I had only had some personal conversations on a couple of occasions. I knew she was single and by choice and she knew I was married and that things were complicated. Beyond those peripheral discussions, we had never talked about our personal life outside of the office. That was fixing to change. It was a huge gamble for me, knowing how strongly the company felt about managers getting involved in the personal affairs of employees.
“I have some pull in HR and I’d like to bump your hourly wage from $12 an hour to $19 an hour.”
Rachel sat in stunned silence as she processed what I had just offered.

“Now, the hard part,” I added. “You should know you can turn down the raise and we can still negotiate a few things. I want you to feel comfortable and no pressure in the additional job responsibilities that I might be asking of you.”
Rachel looked at me in silence. It was hard to read her.
“Can we talk about those responsibilities over dinner and a drink?” I asked.
“Are you asking me out on a date?” Rachel asked.
“No,” I replied. “I am a married man and I just thought it would be better to discuss work things in a more casual environment.”

I turned off my computer and met her at her desk outside of my office.
