"John!" Claudia called as you opened the door of your house. "So good to see you!"
"Yeah, you too," you say, trying not to look too eager as you throw your arms wide and offer a hug, one she accepts before pulling away a little too quickly for your liking. She smiles at you, reminding you why you have such a crush on her. The smile is shy, a little awkward, and attached to an uncommonly beautiful face, framed by dark hair that cascades in waves over her shoulders.
"May I come in?" she asks, reaching down to grab her suitcase.
"Oh, of course," you stammer, so transfixed by her you forgot to invite her yourself.
"Lovely house," she says admiringly as she steps into the hallway. "I can't believe it's for students." You're not quite sure what has prompted this, the only things in the hallway being the stairs to the second floor, two doors leading to your downstairs bedroom and the living room cum kitchen, and a vast amount of crap crammed under the stairs. Perhaps she just means that it isn't absolutely filthy, which in fairness is true.
"Yeah," you say. "It could easily be like, a family home or something."
"Yeah definitely." She looks around. "So, where am I?"
You're about to answer when footsteps on the upstairs landing cause you to look up. A cute blonde girl appears at the top of the stairs, and you roll your eyes.
"Hello," Claudia says politely. "Are you one of John's housemates?"
"Er, no," the girl replies with slight embarrassment. "I was just... never mind, I'm just leaving."
"Oh," Claudia replies. "Oh."
You'd warned her about this. You shared the house with 3 people, two boys and a girl. One of the boys, Cameron, was something of a player, bringing back girls most every night and shagging them, annoyingly enough, in the room directly above yours, the sounds of frenzied coupling providing an almost nightly lullaby. The scene currently playing out of one of his conquests leaving was one you had been witness to many times.
It seemed that Cameron simply could not stop himself from acting this way. The way he interacted with Lily, your housemate, was proof of this. They were purely friends, but he didn't seem able to stop himself from flirting, or touching her, not overtly sexually, but definitely like he was trying to initiate something. She flirted back in fairness, friendly flirting, but she'd broken up with her boyfriend recently, and had told you that even while he comforted her he did it like he was trying to pick her up. He just loved women, and 9 times out of 10 they seemed to fall for his mysterious charms.
You'd told Claudia all of this over text. She'd replied "hahahahha, almost every night? He must be good."
"You got everything?" Cameron appears now at the top of the stairs. The girl looks up at him with something approaching fawning adoration, which seems to make him... uncomfortable?
"Yes thanks," she replies smiling. "Nice meeting you."
"Yeah, um..."
"Bye then."
She heads down the stairs, passing you and Claudia, before exiting the house with a last lovelorn look at Cameron.
Cameron breathes a sigh of relief, before turning to the two of you. "Oh hey, are you Claudia? John told me you were coming, I'm Cameron. Nice to meet you."
"Yeah, nice to meet you too," Claudia replies, looking at him curiously.
"She's in the living room right?" Cameron asks you.
You nod. "Yeah uh, Claudia it's just through here."
"Ok, thanks."
She follows you through to the living room, two sofas ready to be made into beds. "Pick whichever. They're both the same, so neither's gonna be comfier than the other probably."
"Ok, thanks." Cameron enters behind the two of you, walking with a strangely self-conscious gait towards the kitchen. You follow his trajectory quizzically.
