The mid-21st century, AD 2061. The future has not quite turned out the way everyone a half-century earlier might’ve expected. For example, most nearly every adult in the developed nations has a computer implant and quantum wireless network interface in their heads. They call it a “com-imp.” It’s like having a personal computer that’s wired upto your brain; but it’s a whole lot faster than anything fifty years earlier. The solidstate hard-drive is based on DNA, and most can contain a few thousand terabytes of information. Enough to store every memory of every experience you ever had, though most people fill it with the usual useless trivia, junk, music holovids, and other mundane stuff. As a side-effect though, people’s memories are tied into the com-imp as well. It becomes part of their brain, part of their mind.
After all, most people get them implanted before 12 years old, or earlier, down to as young as seven. Helps with school. A vital part of normal life in the mid 21st century.
Security on these devices is super tough; they’re technically un-hack-able, can’t be infected with viruses or trojans, impossible to crash or break into over a network. So, most folks trust them. They’re S-A-F-E, right? Won’t get brain cancer from them either, because the chips are all biotech and use light instead of electrons.
One of the main advantages of having a com-imp is access to all the skills, data, and knowledge that you might want – you just need to practice the stuff you download and pretty soon you can do it. Want to learn Tae Kwon Do? Then download the skills, practice the moves until your body gets used to it, and within days you’ll be a Master. What used to take years to learn now only takes hours if it’s purely mental, or days if you have to physically practice it.
Kids go to school and by the time they finish Year Six, they have multiple university doctorates. High school is just a big party. University campuses are nearly empty except for robots in the research labs, and automated security guarding the perimeter (they make their money selling the research data, and act as huge data servers).
What’s the catch, you might ask? Ah, well, there’s a doozy, a huge problem, made worse because almost nobody knows about it, kept super duper secret by governments and corporations for decades...and that’s where things get reeeeeeal interesting.....
One of the big deals folks get with their com-imp is the Library of Consensus Certified Facts (called “certifacts” in common speech). It’s like a hyper-sized wiki of information that the relevant majority of experts agrees is true and useful. The way it picks experts is by field, right down to those who live in a neighbourhood being rated as “experts” on that neighbourhood with more influence than outsiders who have never been there. These certified “facts” go down to details such as friends & family being rated as the “experts” on each other’s clothing style and experiences. Makes sense, right?
The system has become so much a part of normal life that people accept whatever is certified as "fact", while hordes of simulated intelligence software bots adjust the "certifacts" to smooth over any contradictions - - - often influencing individuals memories in the process. Nobody likes contradictions, so it's seen as a good error-correcting process.
Of course, there’s a loophole that very, very, very, very few people have a clue exists, but the powerful people know about. A loophole that advertisers and government intelligence agencies and propaganda ministries have been abusing for decades. Although it’s (alleged to be technically) ‘impossible’ to deliberately re-write or hack the system, it’s easy to influence it by rigging the votes and expert ratings. That’s what the corporations and governments have been doing.
Nobody else is supposed to know about this... until some smart little bunch of teenage and young adult hackers with the sort of ridiculously superhuman skills in computing that only became possible with the com-imp data downloads, worked out that with a bit of really hard work, and some verrrrry sneaky infiltrations of the local server hardware - physically - to put in their trojans, that they could do what nobody (not even the corporations & governments) had achieved before.
They could deliberately, at a whim, re-write the certified “facts” of people’s existence. Effectively, they could change whatever was thought to be a “fact” to be a different “fact”. About anything. About anyone.
Not quite as good as rewriting reality, but being able to alter everyone else’s memories of what’s true and what’s false is so close that it hardly matters. They can’t change emotions, make someone fall in love on a whim, or instantly wipe out anything that has physical evidence. They can’t control a person like a puppet. But just imagine, being able to change the “facts” of law on a silly impulse, or change the “fact” that the cute girl next door wears a long dress most days to being a “fact” that she can’t recall ever wearing any skirt longer than half-thigh, and neither can anyone else recall her wearing long dresses.
