Summer is here, and for most young American men, that's a good thing. No school, warm weather, loads of free time, parties, and everything else that comes with total freedom from school and other obligations. The days are getting longer, the wildlife has moved back in to the suburbs, kids are playing outside, and barbeque grills are smoking. It truly is the best time of the year.

I'm not so lucky, however. Having just graduated high school, I'm left with no job, no car, and no girlfriend. My parents have been planning a three month trip to sail a big chunk of the world with some friends of theirs for some time now. Dad has been saving up for years, and this is the year that he could afford the boat (or, "ship", as he insists we call it) and supplies that they need. Just ten minutes ago, I saw their tail lights heading out the driveway, around the corner, and not to return for far too long. Someone has to watch the house, and mom tells me it might as well be me, considering I don't have much better to do. Luckily, they set me up with a small weekly allowance for food, entertainment, and that sort of thing.

With no siblings to share the house with, and nowhere else to go but my small chunk of middle-American suburbia, the only person I can spend any time with is my best friend, Sam Wilson, who lives just a block away. Our parents have always been very close, apparently close enough to all hop on a boat and sail the world for a quarter of the year. Sam is likewise in the same situation as me, although he's probably got it a little better considering his family is rather well off compared to my own.

Sam also has no wheels, his parents took his vehicle away from him after he ran out of gas for the third time. Sam has always been a bit of a rebel compared to myself, but he's a legitimately good guy. Where I excelled in math, science, and other academic endeavors, Sam really took off in sports. While I'm no pushover, Sam has always been the athletic one, and along with that came no issue picking up girls.

Unfortunately for him, losing his vehicle likewise meant losing his girl. Asking your cheerleader girlfriend if it's okay for her to pick him up is a surefire way to wind up single in a hurry.
