Lance stared at the ceiling above him. He was once again in the Forestgrove jail. He had been in and out so often that he had his own cell that they reserved especially for him. He never did anything over the edge like murder or steal. He just got a little unruly when he had a little too much to drink and they would take him to the jail until he sobered up.

He wasn’t exactly sure why he was in Forestgrove anymore. It was just this little town that he had come across in his journeys. He had been wandering since the rest of his party had abandoned him. He had been a thief then and when something had gone missing they had blamed him and threatened to leave him behind. Obviously it hadn’t been an idol threat since the next day he found himself alone in the inn that they had been at.

Now he wasn’t the little thieving boy he had been before. He was older and far wiser and knew that stealing often ended up badly, especially when it was magical items that you stole. He looked down at the last item he had ever stolen. A mage had been carrying it and for all of the years that it had been in Lance’s possession he had yet to discover its true purpose or how to unlock its power.

It was just a simple necklace. A leather sash with an intricate clawed hand hanging from it grasping what appeared to be a pink transparent marble. Whenever he had shown it to anyone they had just waved it off as an ornament of some kind.

It didn’t really matter to him that much what it was. To him it had a great deal of sentimental value since it was proof that not everything was worth stealing. It had absolutely no purpose other than the fact that it looked nice and if he were to ever get hit in that exact spot with an arrow it might stop it.

He tied the leather sash back around his neck as he heard the guards coming down the hallway to release him back into the city. They stopped and one guard shook his head as he looked down at Lance.

“You’re here again? Why don’t you go do something with your life? Do you not have anywhere to stay so when you get cold you go drink yourself silly or something?”

Lance silently got up and walked past the guard ignoring him. The guards never understood anything that was going on. He wondered if they actually ever really tried. In either case it didn’t matter to him what they did as long as he didn’t have to put up with it. He had far better things to do with his time then put up with some stupid guards trying to psychoanalyze him.

He arrived at the front desk to the jail and awaited the return of his sword which they had confiscated to make sure he didn’t do himself or anyone else any harm while he was in the cell. It was more of a formality than anything else because in his drunken state it wasn’t even as if he could use the weapon to do anyone any harm.

After retrieving his weapon Lance stepped outside the jail and ran his fingers through his light brown hair. It came down to about his shoulders, which was good for him because it helped hide his face when he desired to not be seen and if he needed to escape for whatever reason he could often pass himself off as a woman. When he came out of the jail he saw a large group of people gathered around a sign. He walked over and carefully read over what had been written.

“The Silver Wolves are looking for new recruits. If you are interested in joining a party of intrepid adventurers seeking fame and fortune then come to the auditions at the White Dragon Inn.”

Lance blinked as he finished. Usually posters like this didn’t interest him.
