Chloe HAD elaborated on her comment at the gun store to Carl. She had been visiting her Grandparents, as she did almost every summer. She had been riding on the wheel guard of the tractor, and listening to his stories. He had been having trouble with some coyotes, and was carrying his shotgun, a pair of rifles, and had had the old pistol on his hip. He had taken the opportunity to do a little target shooting to teach his only grand daughter how to handle and shoot guns. She had fired both of the rifles and was fairly good with them, but when she fired the shotgun, an old double barreled coach gun, she had pulled the front trigger first, and it had fired BOTH barrels at the same time. The kick had put her on the seat of her pants. Grandpa had helped her up, and checked to see if she had been injured, then had dusted her off, and hugged her, explaining what she had done wrong. She had fired the shotgun several more times, impressed at how big the pattern, as her Grandpa had called it, became so soon. She had asked her Grandpa if she could shoot the old pistol, and after much wheedling, and pleading, he allowed her to hold it first, because, "It's so old and heavy, Sweetie, and you might get hurt." She hadn't given up, pleading almost to the point of making him angry. He had finally given in to her. He took her to a stand of trees, and cut an X in the bark of one of them and stepped off 10 paces. He had carefully handed her the gun. "It's a Walker Colt. It has a 14 inch barrel, and weighs almost 5 pounds. I load it with black powder, and don't shoot it much, because it kicks like a mule. When ya shoot it, hold on tight, and use BOTH hands. You have to cock the hammer to fire it. It's what is called a single action pistol." He handed it to her and held her shoulders to set her in the right position. It HAD been heavy.
