Chapter 1
The bright sun beat down on this hot, stifling August afternoon as the crew began setting up for the next take. Jo could definitely think of better places to be than Santa Fe in the middle of August. As Pete Henry placed the megaphone to his lips, everyone tried desperately to make a move from their sitting positions. It was just too damn hot to be alive.
"Okay, folks. Everybody on the set, let's get rolling!"
As Jo picked herself up from the chair, a dizzy spell hit her. As she looked down, everything started spinning around her.

"I'll be just fine, Pete. It's just this heat. It's gone straight to my head today. Just give me a minute and I'll be ready to roll."
"Hey, Mike. Get Jo something cold to drink, will you please? The sun's got her rocking!"
"Sure, right away. I'll get her some ice cold lemondade," the man smiled as he winked at young, beautiful Jo.

"Believe me, Pete. I wish I did. I might have been able to sleep better last night. This heat is just unbearable. How the hell do people live in this part of the country? I'd drop dead after a week!"
"Hang in, k**. We only have another three days and we're off! Back to LA. Back to the beaches, mountains and tennis courts!" Pete smiled.
"This is one time I'll be ecstatic to hit LA International. I've never missed that town so much in my life!" Jo laughed, looking as if she were about to faint.
"Here you go, honey, one ice cold lemonade on the rocks. Don't take it down in one slug or you'll really die. Sip it easy," Mike suggested, handing Jo a napkin.
"You're a doll, Mike."
"You've just made my day by saying that Miss Jo Ross," Mike smiled, walking back to the crew and set.
Jo sat and drank her glass of cold lemonade savoring every mouthful that went down. Anything cold felt like a lifesaver. Pete was with the crew giving directions about the next take, and everyone walked around like zombies. The heat was really getting to everyone.
Santa Fe was gorgeous, but the burning sun was something Jo could never live with. It got hot in LA, but not quite like this. She'd never done a picture in this part of the country. Almost every film she'd done to date had been shot in Europe or California. This was number seven and one she wouldn't forget too easily.
Pete Henry was a fabulous director and that was the main reason Jo had accepted the role. She'd worked with Pete in France on a film called, "My Love For You," and Jo considered this one of her best films to date.
Seven films at twenty-two wasn't bad, and to consider one of these a good film was even better. Jo knew actresses and actors in their fifties who still weren't satisfied or even considered one of their films good. At twenty two, Jo could at leat feel satisfaction with one of her films. And hopefully, this one would also be a work of art she could be proud of.
When Jo first received the script and sat down with it she knew she was interested. The final decision was made when she found out it was being directed by Pete Henry. That did the trick.
Deep down, Jo felt that the director was the most important part of a film. When you were as young as Jo, you still felt a bit insecure about your craft and abilities. Jo knew she needed a strong director and Pete Henry was definitely a strong director.
She had a lot to learn about film and she knew it. But the last five years had certainly been good for her. Work had been coming in constantly and she was fortunate to work with some fine people.
Starting out in LA at sixteen was difficult. Jo was a very mature girl and never looked her age. Trying to get interviews with agents and managers was quite degrading for her in the beginning. As the cameras started rolling, Jo and her leading man, Tim Scott, acted out their scene with ease and a steady flow of emotion. Jo had worked with Tim once before, but never opposite him. They both had bit parts in a police movie about two years ago and had chatted briefly on the set a few times. "Well, if I got a chance to exercise my emotions off the set I wouldn't have to take advantage on the set," Tim smiled, slyly.
"Next time you pull that shit while we're filming I'll cause a scene in front of the whole crew and make a flying asshole out of you!"
"I dare you, bitch!" Tim smiled, teasingly.

"I'm fine now. Thanks."
"Tim giving you trouble?" Sue asked, sympathetically.
"How did you know? Does it show on my face or something?" Jo laughed.
"Well, I figured from the beginning when I knew you were playing opposite each other that he'd be after your ass. Tim Scott has a reputation for being a real Casanova! Half the ladies in Hollywood would love to get their hands on him, honestly, I don't see why!" Sue exclaimed.
Jo had to laugh at this last remark. "Oh, really? Don't you think he's handsome, and masculine and all that shit that the fan magazines say?"

Sue looked at Jo, quite puzzled, but said nothing. Finishing up their sandwiches and drinks, the girls cleared up their dishes and headed back for the set.
"Okay, let's get rolling," Pete's voice yelled from his megaphone. 'This is the last shot for the day, k**s. So let's try and do it in one take and then we can all pack it in. I know you're dying to get the hell out of here and lie in your air-conditioned rooms and take a dip in the pool. So let's get it down the first time."
The next scene was a fight scene between Tim and a new young actor named Brad Dee.

Resuming the take, the fight scene continued and the take was good. "Okay, that's it for today, k**s. Get a good night's sleep and I want you all on the set at six tomorrow morning. Not ten after, or five after, but six on the button! Got that?" Pete ordered with the authority of a gestapo officer.
"Yeah," came a chorus of muffled voices.
Everyone headed back for their motel rooms as the cars pulled out from the set. The crew would remain a couple of hours longer to pack up the equipment and make sure everything was in order.
The first thing Jo intended to do was jump into the swimming pool at the motel. It was only about six thirty and she was certainly going to take advantage of the early day. For the past two days they hadn't finished before ten.
Pulling into the motel parking lot, Jo saw Tim getting out of his car and heading for his room. Trying to figure the best way to handle someone like Tim Scott without being c***dish, Jo decided to acknowledge him but show him absolutely no added attention.

The bright sun beat down on this hot, stifling August afternoon as the crew began setting up for the next take. Jo could definitely think of better places to be than Santa Fe in the middle of August. "Okay, folks. Everybody on the set, let's get rolling!"

"Hey, you okay, k**?" a young, female voice asked.

"Sure, right away. I'll get her some ice cold lemondade," the man smiled as he winked at young, beautiful Jo.
"Sit down for a few minutes and then after the drink we'll see if we can get you to stand without wobbling," Pete teased. "Maybe you been hitting the booze, huh, k**? Have a little bottle stashed in your room or something?" he laughed.
"Believe me, Pete. I wish I did. I might have been able to sleep better last night. This heat is just unbearable. How the hell do people live in this part of the country? I'd drop dead after a week!"
"Hang in, k**. We only have another three days and we're off! Back to LA. Back to the beaches, mountains and tennis courts!" Pete smiled.
"This is one time I'll be ecstatic to hit LA International. I've never missed that town so much in my life!" Jo laughed, looking as if she were about to faint.
"Here you go, honey, one ice cold lemonade on the rocks. Don't take it down in one slug or you'll really die. Sip it easy," Mike suggested, handing Jo a napkin.
"You're a doll, Mike."
"You've just made my day by saying that Miss Jo Ross," Mike smiled, walking back to the crew and set.
Jo sat and drank her glass of cold lemonade savoring every mouthful that went down. Anything cold felt like a lifesaver. Pete was with the crew giving directions about the next take, and everyone walked around like zombies. The heat was really getting to everyone.
Santa Fe was gorgeous, but the burning sun was something Jo could never live with. It got hot in LA, but not quite like this. She'd never done a picture in this part of the country. Almost every film she'd done to date had been shot in Europe or California. This was number seven and one she wouldn't forget too easily.
Pete Henry was a fabulous director and that was the main reason Jo had accepted the role. She'd worked with Pete in France on a film called, "My Love For You," and Jo considered this one of her best films to date.
Seven films at twenty-two wasn't bad, and to consider one of these a good film was even better. Jo knew actresses and actors in their fifties who still weren't satisfied or even considered one of their films good. At twenty two, Jo could at leat feel satisfaction with one of her films. And hopefully, this one would also be a work of art she could be proud of.
When Jo first received the script and sat down with it she knew she was interested. The final decision was made when she found out it was being directed by Pete Henry. That did the trick.
Deep down, Jo felt that the director was the most important part of a film. When you were as young as Jo, you still felt a bit insecure about your craft and abilities. Jo knew she needed a strong director and Pete Henry was definitely a strong director.
She had a lot to learn about film and she knew it. But the last five years had certainly been good for her. Work had been coming in constantly and she was fortunate to work with some fine people.
Starting out in LA at sixteen was difficult. Jo was a very mature girl and never looked her age. Trying to get interviews with agents and managers was quite degrading for her in the beginning. She was a beautiful girl who looked like a goddess. Her physical presence was incredible! And this was something that always seemed to bother Jo. Are they using me for' my beauty or because I'm a good actress?
Jo had an incredible body! She stood about five feet six inches and weighed about one hundred and ten pounds. Jo had modeled from the time she was ten years old, and decided at sixteen to try the big city. Hollywood! Her mother told her she'd have a hard time because she was part Indian, but Jo was determined to make it somehow, someway! She figured if she couldn't make it as an actress she could always pick up some money by returning to her modeling career. It was difficult for Jo to leave her mother, but she felt she had to make a move and live her life. Her and her mother had been together and alone for twenty years. She loved her mother for being so strong and never ever letting her down.
Now Jo was a working actress. She had one of the best agents in LA and offers were coming in left and right. When Jo first arrived in LA she realized you needed more than a beautiful face and body to make it.
So, for two years Jo did some modeling and office work and spent her nights studying acting with some of the finest coaches in LAShe spent some time with some acting groups and workshops and when her coach finally felt she was ready, he threw her out into the big, cruel world!
"How are you feeling?" asked a voice from behind her chair.
Jo looked around and saw Sue Palmer's young, pretty face. Sue was helping out with costumes on the film and was a young student working for the summer. She had just started her first year of college that Fall and was totally awed by working on a real Hollywood movie.
"Oh, I think I'll probably survive," Jo smiled, attempting to rise from her seat.
"Need a helping arm?" Sue laughed.
"I think it may come in handy right now," laughed Jo.
Sue grabbed hold of Jo's arm and they both walked towards the crew. Sue kept looking at Jo as' they continued walking and Jo started feeling quite self-conscious.
"What is it, Sue?" Jo asked, curiously.
"Oh, nothing, excuse me, you're just so beautiful, Jo," Sue answered shyly.
Laughing, Jo replied, "You're not so bad yourself, k**!"
Looking at each other, they both burst into laughter, walking arm in arm towards the crew.
"Well, you seem to be hanging in," Pete said, seeing the two girls grinning from ear to ear.
"Did you ever hear of an Indian who couldn't handle the sun?" asked Jo, teasingly.
"It's that Irish blood in you. It's strong. Too strong! The Indian blood would have had you on the set and working hours ago," Pete teased.
As everyone got into their places, the make-up girl came over to Jo and gave her some last minute touches. In most of her films, Jo always used very little make-up since she had a flawless complexion and was usually quite tan.
As the cameras started rolling, Jo and her leading man, Tim Scott, acted out their scene with ease and a steady flow of emotion. Jo had worked with Tim once before, but never opposite him. They both had bit parts in a police movie about two years ago and had chatted briefly on the set a few times. Tim was a handsome, strong, muscular man who stood about six feet and weighed in at about one hundred eighty. He had sandy blond hair and hazel eyes and a lovely chiseled face. All the girls working on the film went weak in the knees when he was around. He knew this and loved taking advantage.
The love scene was going line, but nearing the end of the shot the camera dolly hit a bump in the track and shook the camera so the scene had to be shot over.
"Okay, k**s, let's take two! Quiet on the set, please!" yelled Pete.
As Tim and Jo began the embrace for their love scene, she felt as if Tim's arms were trying to squash her to death. Not making any comments, Jo carried on as well as she could so that no one would notice her discomfort, and then cut the scene again.
When the time for their passionate kiss came near, Tim pulled her tightly towards him and placed his mouth on hers, prying his tongue between her lips. Jo, not wanting to cause the flow of the scene to halt, carried on as calmly as she could without causing a scene.
"Okay, cut. Good take, k**s, take a five minute break!" Pete ordered.
As everyone started walking toward the canteen, Jo approached Tim and grabbed his arm.
"Hey, what the hell are you trying to do, Tim? I don't go for that shit when we're working," Jo exclaimed quietly, but sternly.
"Well, if I got a chance to exercise my emotions off the set I wouldn't have to take advantage on the set," Tim smiled, slyly.
"Next time you pull that shit while we're filming I'll cause a scene in front of the whole crew and make a flying asshole out of you!"
"I dare you, bitch!" Tim smiled, teasingly.
"If you're so hot on my ass why haven't you ever tried making me off the set, Mr. Stud?" Jo mocked.
"Because I know what a bitch you are and I know I'd probably not get to first base with you."
"That's pretty ballsless not to even try. But you're probably right."

"Only to pricks like you, Mr. Tim Scott, not to human beings!' she smiled.

"Yes, I agree with you there. It's part of my craft. One of the most important things in Acting is observation, my dear, and I've been observing you and discovering things!" he smirked.
"Well, good for you!" Jo smiled, and walked away.
Entering the canteen, Jo grabbed herself a ham sandwich and a cold coke and went in a corner to gobble down her food. Sue Palmer saw Jo from the other side of the room and walked over to join her.
"Hi, how are you?" Sue asked, smiling.
"I'm fine now. Thanks."
"Tim giving you trouble?" Sue asked, sympathetically.
"How did you know? Does it show on my face or something?" Jo laughed.
"Well, I figured from the beginning when I knew you were playing opposite each other that he'd be after your ass. Tim Scott has a reputation for being a real Casanova! Half the ladies in Hollywood would love to get their hands on him, honestly, I don't see why!" Sue exclaimed.
Jo had to laugh at this last remark. "Oh, really? Don't you think he's handsome, and masculine and all that shit that the fan magazines say?"
"No," Sue replied quite seriously.
"Well, neither do I," said Jo.
"He's a real bastard as far as I'm concerned. My dad was the cameraman on three of his films and he's told me some stories about old Tim Scott. He's married with six k**s! Do you believe that? He has a lovely, sweet small-town wife who just puts up with all his shit. He's fucked just about everybody in Hollywood!"
"Great! Sounds like a real nice guy, Tim Scott," Jo smirked.
"Well, I'm not interested and this is one ass he isn't going to get his hands on," Jo commented.
"I thought for sure you would fall madly in love with him. I'm so glad to hear you say that. I wouldn't want to see you with that dirty son-of-a-bitch!" exclaimed Sue.
"No, honey. He's definitely not my type. As a matter-of-fact, I'm not a big one for men!" Jo said, quite casually.
Sue looked at Jo, quite puzzled, but said nothing. Finishing up their sandwiches and drinks, the girls cleared up their dishes and headed back for the set.
"Okay, let's get rolling," Pete's voice yelled from his megaphone. 'This is the last shot for the day, k**s. So let's try and do it in one take and then we can all pack it in. I know you're dying to get the hell out of here and lie in your air-conditioned rooms and take a dip in the pool. So let's get it down the first time."
The next scene was a fight scene between Tim and a new young actor named Brad Dee.
Brad was a real sweetheart and Jo took a liking to him the first time they met. He was a naive, honest k** just out of high school. He was s*******n, but looked about twenty-three. He was built very big and muscular.
Jo had a chat with him for about a half hour the first day they started shooting this movie in Los Angeles. He was so sweet and innocent Jo wanted to grab him and hug him. As the two men fought in the Hollywood fashion, Jo wished that the blows Brad was administering to Tim's head were the real thing. That bastard really needed someone to set him straight. He really thought he had the world by the balls, well, not with Jo Ross!
In the middle of the scene, Pete cut the shot. Tim had cut Brad's lip and the blood was filling up his mouth. When Jo realized what had happened, she ran over to the young boy and started dabbing his Up with her handkerchief. Someone got some cold water and a towel and Jo cleansed the boy's lip.
"Oh, I'm okay, really, Jo. It's only a little cut. Let's get this scene over with so we can call it a day," Brad said, spitting out the blood in his mouth.
As Jo dabbed at the side of Brad's mouth, she looked over at Tim and smirked. She had a feeling that the blow to Brad's mouth was not accidental.
"Look, this'll give the scene a bit more reality," Pete laughed, telling everyone to get in their places. "Are you okay, k**?"
"Really, I'm fine, Pete. Let's shoot," Brad replied.
Resuming the take, the fight scene continued and the take was good. "Okay, that's it for today, k**s. Get a good night's sleep and I want you all on the set at six tomorrow morning. Not ten after, or five after, but six on the button! Got that?" Pete ordered with the authority of a gestapo officer.
"Yeah," came a chorus of muffled voices.
Everyone headed back for their motel rooms as the cars pulled out from the set. The crew would remain a couple of hours longer to pack up the equipment and make sure everything was in order.
The first thing Jo intended to do was jump into the swimming pool at the motel. It was only about six thirty and she was certainly going to take advantage of the early day. For the past two days they hadn't finished before ten.
Pulling into the motel parking lot, Jo saw Tim getting out of his car and heading for his room. Trying to figure the best way to handle someone like Tim Scott without being c***dish, Jo decided to acknowledge him but show him absolutely no added attention.
"Hi, care to have a drink a little later, pretty lady?" Tim asked, suavely.
"No thanks, I'm really bushed and I think I'm going to call it a night early," Jo smiled with difficulty.

Jo proceeded to her room and changed into her bikini. There was almost nothing to the suit, except for a few patches and some string. It was one of those shoe-string bikinis and if anyone could wear it, Jo could. Her body was made for bikinis.
Looking in the mirror and adjusting her suit, Jo reached for a hair clip and placed all her lovely, long, black strands on top of her head. Satisfied with her appearance she left for the pool.
From the stairs she could see that there were about three or four people sitting around the deck of the pool. Jo wasn't in the mood for any social mingling, so she headed for the empty side of the pool.
Lying her towel on the floor, she walked to the edge of the large, k**ney-shaped pool and plunged in with a splash. Swimming from one side to the other for a few times, she finally grabbed one of the floats and relaxed on it for a while. Closing her eyes, she let the float drift in the pool as she felt her muscles at ease for the first time that day.
Suddenly, she felt the float spinning in circles as if it were in a whirlpool. Opening her eyes quickly, she turned her head and saw young Sue Palmer smiling, gleefully.
"Hi. Thought I'd come and keep you company, do you mind?"

"Yeah, I really like Brad. I talked to him for a while yesterday. We've never really spent any time conversing before then. He seems so sweet," Sue smiled, staring into the water.
"Well, I think I'd better go upstairs and get changed," spoke Jo.
"Jo, can I come up to your room for a while? I really don't feel like hanging around this pool any longer and I don't want to go to my room just yet. It's so boring," Sue exclaimed.
"Sure, honey, let's go," Jo smiled.
Heading for the stairs, dripping wet, the girls made their way to Jo's room. Entering the room, Jo started for the bathroom to remove her wet bikini. Wrapping a terry-cloth towel around her voluptuous body, Jo returned from the bathroom.
