Session Six
Ava stared blankly at the clock, feeling the weight of each second settle into her body. Anxiety rushed through her when she realized that in exactly one hour she would be sitting across from Dr. Prescott.
Everything had changed since their last session. She understood everything with renewed clarity, but there was a war waging inside her. Ms. Ambani had given her the freedom and acceptance that she had spent a lifetime striving for, and for the first time ever, she didn’t need to pretend to be something or someone that she wasn’t.
Every day she stepped deeper into Ms. Ambani’s world and realized more and more that it was where she belonged. But, at the same time, being with the Doctor felt like coming home. It had been that way since the beginning. The first time she had seen Dr. Prescott, she had felt the shock of every inch of her body coming to awareness at the same moment, and she felt terrified, captivated, breathless.
Despite that, the greatest joy in her life had come from playing in the shadows and surfing the fringes. That was where her desire lived, and finding people like her had salved the wounds of a lifetime of rejection, shame, and self-loathing.
The deeper she dove into this new world, the more she realized that this was where she belonged. She knew that she couldn’t straddle both worlds. She knew that the Doctor was attracted to her, but it was a sanitized version of her, gutted of all of her kink and grit. She knew that she couldn’t live like that, but she also knew that she couldn’t stomach the idea that she had to sacrifice the love of her life to feel whole. The Doctor was her soulmate. Time was edging in on her, and she began to get ready for her appointment. She slipped into a pair of dark blue skinny jeans, wriggling until they snugged around her hips. Then decided to pair them with her favourite, very worn, oversized grey sweater and a pair of knee high black riding boots. She slicked her hair back so tight against her scalp that she tore out a few strands in the process. Then she dragged a painful breath into her tight chest as she locked the front door and headed for her appointment.
Twenty minutes later she was summoned into Dr. Prescott’s office. She stood up, swallowed a bubble of fear, walked over the threshold, and slipped into her regular chair. Something felt different today. The room was still welcoming and warm, but there was a coldness in the Doctor’s eyes and a tightness in her expression that sent a shiver down Ava’s spine.
It had been a week since they had seen each other, and their last session had ended with her being summarily dismissed. Ava was angry then, and she was angry now. But today’s anger was equally matched with desperation and sorrow that burrowed in her belly as she crossed her legs and leaned back in her chair.
She didn’t know what to do. She was addicted to the pull of the connection that she felt with the Doctor, but she also needed a space to be honest about who she really was and what she really wanted. At the moment, her whole world revolved around Madison and their adventures, and she needed someone to talk to about them. Maybe the Doctor hadn’t been the best option, and maybe she hadn’t read the situation well, but that didn’t change the fact that her life was splitting at the seams, and she needed someone that could help her stitch it back together.
Dr. Prescott regarded her with cold detachment, but when she looked into her eyes, she could see that there was something deeper there. The longer they sat together in silence, the more the mask peeled away. Eventually, the moment came when the Doctor’s expression softened and flooded with sorrow, her gaze begging for compassion and understanding.
Ava wanted to take her in her arms and hold her, but she knew that she couldn’t. All she could do was sit across from her and be brave enough to lean into the discomfort of the situation. It was too much, and she was sick of all of the wordless conversations that had occupied their every interaction. She needed more than this, she wanted someone who was brave enough to really show up for her, and showing up meant being honest and vulnerable.
She understood that Dr. Prescott had more to lose than she did. She knew that this wasn’t a game despite the fact that she had treated it like one. She needed desperately to bring this relationship into the physical world, where they could touch each other and have a real conversation. She just didn’t know what she had to do to make that happen. Everything that she had tried had failed. She knew that she had to be the one to make the move, but that made her angry. She was sick of begging for love. For once in her life, she needed someone to woo her, and she needed someone to prove that she meant something, that she mattered.
She couldn’t do it, not again. Not this time. So, if that meant that she was going to lose the Doctor, then that was something that she would have to accept. She was resolved to stop chasing love, it was time for someone else to make the big gesture.
‘What do you want?’ Ava demanded, her voice rising in frustration.
She jumped up from her chair and stormed over to the window. ‘What are we doing?!’
Turning quickly, she walked over to the Doctor’s chair and kneeled down in front of her.
‘You don’t want me,’ she murmured, as she leaned her forehead into the Doctor’s knees and let silent tears trail down her face.
Dr. Prescott rested her hand on the back of Ava’s head, stroking her gently with her thumb.
‘I didn’t meet you in a bar Ava, or on some dating site. I’m supposed to be helping you. Do you realize how much of a violation it would be for me to abuse that trust by allowing something to happen between us?’ Dr. Prescott whispered, as Ava looked up at her.
‘This isn’t who we are supposed to be to each other, you get that right? We just met in the wrong place. Are you really going to let that determine our destiny?’ Ava asked, her voice pleading and cracking as she rested her cheek on the Doctor’s legs.
Dr. Prescott stroked Ava’s hair, while they sat together in what felt like endless silence.
‘You’re fired.’ Ava said, her voice hard and determined.
The Doctor’s hand stilled.
‘There. Now we can be whatever we want to be,’ Ava said, the tears still drying on her face but a hint of hope creeping into her voice.
‘Not yet, but one day,’ the Doctor replied, leaning forward and reaching down to hold Ava’s face between her hands.
Ava looked up at her, resting into her palms and breathing in the scent of her skin. She was confused, but she wanted to prolong this moment more than she wanted to understand it.
The Doctor’s eyes lit up and sparkled. ‘When you’re ready, I’ll find you.’ Her voice was soft and laced with promise.
Ava opened her mouth to protest, but it was silenced by one firm, hard kiss. Her lips were soon replaced by the Doctor’s thumb, which silenced any protest.
