Thursday
My wife and I slept in on Thursday morning after our late night trip to the adult theater. The place we were staying didn't have a bar. She said it sounded nice, so I offered to take our purchases back to my room while she went next door. We split up at the entrance and my wife went next door to the lounge.
When I got to my room there was a light flashing on the phone indicating that I had a message. I threw our purchases on the bed and called the front desk. The message was 'call Walter.' I stopped to use the bathroom and then tried to call Walter. It was just after 6pm in California and I was pretty sure that he would still be in his office. I missed him at work and got the answering service. He was gone for the day. I moved our purchases from my bed to the closet in my wife's room and closed the connecting door without even thinking about it, then tried calling Walter at home. His wife answered. Walter wasn't there yet, but he was due any time. I tried again about ten minutes later and caught him walking in the door. His wife told me that he would be right there and put down the phone. It was another five minutes before he picked up the phone. The important message was that Steve had decided that he wanted to have his car so we were canceling the limo. "How did the convention go?"
"Just fine. Very interesting!" (Not!)
"Did my wife arrive safely?"
"Yes she did, and thanks again for flying her out."
"Not a problem. It was my pleasure. The very least I could do," he said; and so on for what seemed like forever until he finally said, "well, I should let you get back to that beautiful wife of yours" and we said our goodbyes.
It was a half hour by the time I made it next door to the lounge. My wife was at the far end of the bar sitting between two guys in suits - but then a good sized portion of the male population still all wore suits back then. As I approached I recognized them as two men from the conference. I made sure my wife saw me and grabbed a seat on the same side of the bar and four stools down from her. I'm guessing it was Tom nearest me, who turned to see who she'd smiled at. He and his twin brother Tim and I had a few drinks together here on Tuesday night after dinner. They were just about my age, maybe a year or two older. I was thirty five at the time and as mentioned earlier my wife, who prefers older men, was just weeks from her twenty-third birthday. The twins owned a network security company and had given two of the seminars I'd attended.
