My crush on Jamie Campbell started in the summer of 1991. I saw
her at the movie theater and thought she was the most beautiful girl in the
world. The problem was her terrible personality. She was a snob. She only
hung out with the jocks and was really rude to us nerdy types.
Anyhow, I had asked her out and she replied with a simple, "no."
Now, I was crushed and found out that she later dated some older guy from
another school. After that went sour (in about a week), I decided to ask
again. She said, "maybe," and I was on top of the world. In order not to
seem too pushy, I decided not to pursue it for a while. Now this is where
things get weird.
My friend Jason Baldwin was a big Star Trek geek. He was always
trying to invent something or other and build weird things. He was into the
theory of dimensions and wanted to jump into different dimensions. He was
actually convinced that he could do it with small objects, but couldn't return
them. He backed up his belief by showing objects from other dimensions.
He showed me a small American flag from his dad's desk that he fired his
inter-dimensional laser pointer at and it turned into a Nazi flag with a big
swastika on it...a scary dimension. He noticed how an object was never
actually changed, but it's "essence" would be. In other words, the chipped
corner of the flag base was still the same, but the meaning of the flag was
drastically changed.
In any case, I became the towel boy for the basketball team while
Jamie became the team manager. Most people said that she did this just to get
close to the sweaty jocks. I agreed, but denied the allegations that I joined to
get closer to her.
It was a home game and we just lost as usual. I decided the time had
come to ask Jamie out again. She was wearing an adorable school colored
outfit with white tights and a short red skirt. As I began walking up to her, I
bumped into Jason again. He asked, "Are you going over there to ask Jamie
out?"
"Yes," I told him reluctantly. "Wish me luck."
"Here's a good luck charm," he replied, reaching into his pocket and
producing his pointer.
"Sure," I said, kind of laughing at the notion as I placed the device
into my coat pocket.
Suddenly she appeared from the bleachers and the dissipating crowd.
"Oh, it's you," she said as she kind of rolled her eyes at me.
"Hey, Jamie?" I said, starting to shake but I had to go for it, "I was
wondering..there was something we talked about a long time ago..."
She must have had a bad day because she cut me off. "No!" she
declared, "No, alright? I'm not trying to hurt you, but just...no."
"..." I was speechless.
"Look," she said, "I'm not trying to hurt you."
"..but..I"
"NO!" she slapped my jacket.
There was a loud snap as the object in my pocket broke in two. I felt
the device that Jason had given me. It had broken in two. I pulled out both
parts.
"Oh, I'm sorry," Jamie said. "I didn't mean to break your pen."
"It's not a pen," I said, "It's an inter-dimensional laser pointer thing I
got from Jason."
I pressed the two pieces together and a spark jumped down to the
floor. It playfully bounced around for a while and--without warning--
whipped around in a sudden arc near the Dragons team logo on the center of
the floor. A flash of light momentarily embraced the circle on the floor and
then disappeared with a puff of smoke. Like a curtain being pulled away the
new "Rowdy Rex" basketball mascot appeared. Most people were
completely lost, but I knew it was another dimension's team logo.
"Whatever that thing is, it's got to be worth a lot of money," Jamie
said. She glared for a moment, then lunged for it. "Give me that!"
She grabbed for the device, but only got half. She took a couple of
steps back and another arc jumped from her piece to mine. I was temporarily
blinded by the bright light.
I immediately knew what had happened. I was suddenly sitting on
the floor and I knew I had switched bodies with Jamie. I just knew it was
her body! I was sitting on a pillow and lost the sense of where I was, but I
could tell right away that I was now a girl, more specifically, Jamie. I just
knew it, but I couldn't say specifically why. I felt the soft skin on my face
and reached back to feel my hair, but it was in a ponytail. Hmm, this wasn't
right. Her hair wasn't like this before, she let it straight down. Could I be
wrong? I felt a nudge on my shoulder, "Snap out of it, Karen. That's the
game. Let's do the final cheer."
I looked up and saw Nikki, one of the friendliest cheerleaders I knew.
I just looked at her, dumbfounded, as she got up and waved for me to get up
and follow. But I didn't, instead I just sat there in awe as the other girls did a
cheer. I slowly looked down at my body. I was wearing a cheerleading
uniform as well, sitting on a little cushion. On top of one of the sweaters was
a small make-up mirror. I picked it up and examined my reflection. I was
Jamie, but with a different hairstyle and less make-up. But I couldn't
understand why I was being called Karen. At the end of their cheer, Nikki
approached me and asked if I felt okay. I lied and said yes.
Just then, the team walked by and all the girls began shaking their
poms and cheering the players, I nervously grabbed my poms and shook
them with fake enthusiasm. Suddenly I saw my own body among the
basketball players! Sure enough, he was walking toward me, but why was
he wearing a basketball uniform? It had to be Jamie. If I had her body she
had to have had mine!
He came up to me and stared at me a second, not looking happy.
"Jamie," I said, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean for any of this to happen. I don't
even know how it happened, but I'll do whatever it takes to get us back to the
way we're supposed to be."
Jamie just looked at me funny with my old eyes and smirked. "It was
just a little fight, Karen. I'm not really that upset." He kissed my cheek and
grinned. "Cheer up," he said and walked away. Okay, it wasn't her, but
whoever it was responded to Jamie's name and must be dating me.
I looked up at the score and saw that our team had just won.
Obviously a different dimension, I thought. I turned around and saw my
mother in the crowd. Now this was not normal, she never came to the
games. She never really had a reason.
She came right up to me as if she were still my mother. "Well," she
said, "I suppose we have to wait for Jim to get out of the locker room so you
can decide if you two will do anything tonight."
"Sure," I said with no clue what was happening.
"Something's wrong," she said with concern, "I can tell when
something is bothering my daughter."
Daughter? Me? Hmm, I guess this is DEFINITELY another
dimension. I must have been transported to a dimension where I was born
with Jamie's body. Of course! I remember my mother telling me that my
name would have been Karen if I had been a girl. I also heard through the
grapevine that Jamie's parents wanted a boy. Naturally, that wasn't Jamie's
personality from my dimension, this guy was actually nice.
I wondered what happened to Jamie's mind. I had her body, but still
was a member of my own family. When I looked up, I saw my former body
talking with Jamie's parents. It makes perfect sense now. I came to a
dimension where my soul was born in her body and hers was born in mine.
Everything else was the same, but this is what the world would have been if I
had only been born with this body. Also, Jamie's name was Jim in this new
world. The weirdest thing is that the two of us were dating each other. As a
girl, she didn't seem like a nice person, but the male version was very
pleasant. Also, he was a great basketball player, which I never had an
interest in, and I was a cheerleader, which Jamie would never have done. It
was perfect.
He came and asked me if I was interested in going out for a bite to
eat. I decided to go with him, but I needed to change my clothes first. I
knew this would be an interesting thing, I was removing my cheerleading
uniform and putting on whatever I would have worn here. I knew that the
personality that used to be in this body must have been "me" from this
dimension, so she would have similar tastes in clothing to my own. Only
now I would be the one wearing the clothes. I found my new name,
"Karen," on my locker in the Girl's Locker Room and stopped when my
hand grabbed the lock. I tried my old combination about three times and
knew it wouldn't work. I went back out and explained to my family and
Jamie that I had forgotten my combination. Fortunately, Jamie's dad had a
hacksaw that I was able to use to saw through the lock. It didn't bother me to
have to do that since it solved the problem. I pulled out a red duffel bag and
spread it open. A pink dress sat neatly folded inside. I picked it up and set it
aside. I grabbed the bottom of my sleeveless uniform top and pulled it up
over my head. I slid my canvas shoes and little white socks off my feet and
stood to remove the skirt. I felt around the back for the button and zipper,
but found it on the side. Seeing the location of the tag, I realized that this was
the design of the skirt. I had no idea that some cheerleading skirts have
buttons on the side, but it showed me how much I still had to learn. I
removed my sports bra and saw Jamie's...that is, my naked breasts for the
first time. It was shocking how "loose" they felt outside of the bra. I found
a normal bra inside the bag and put it on. I stepped in front of the mirror and
actually felt a little guilty for taking this beautiful body, but during the few
minutes I stood there, I came to grips with this dimension. The thing was
that it wasn't a "dimension" anymore. It was now a reality to me. This body
was mine here.
I put on the white tights that were in the bag and pulled the dress on
over it. My feet fit comfortably into the white dress shoes I had in the bag. I
took out my purse and folded up the cheerleading uniform to put into the
bag, deciding that the red and white ribbons would just remain in my
ponytail--even though it was part of the uniform.
When I came out, I saw Jamie patiently waiting for me. I thought
about how, as a girl, she had always been the drinking type and I wasn't.
You can imagine how surprised I was to see that here, he didn't drink at all.
Instead, we just went to Burger King and hung out. He didn't really try to
kiss me or anything, which is good because I was getting creeped out by the
circumstances. I sat there thinking about how I fantasized about switching
bodies with Jamie, but now I was really here. It wasn't even a switch, it was
more of a dimensional shift. Yes, I had the desire to be "inside" her body. I
always considered it a thing of respect. Even though her personality was not
the greatest, I thought of it as a compliment to her how I wished I could
experience her body from within. Most guys would look at a pretty girl and
think of her as an object. My desire was to understand her as a person,
another human being, an individual. Oh, to have an unbreakable union with
someone of the opposite sex such as an understanding of each other from the
soul. A genuine exchange of selves. Not of bodies, but of actual selves at a
spiritual level. I think that is what bothered me in that sparse restaurant that
night. I was sitting across from a boy who had always been that boy for his
whole life, with no experience of "her," that is my, body. This was a world
of Karen and Jamie as the cutest couple in the school. It wasn't my dream. I
think it may be better in some ways, but wasn't my expectation.
I had to tell Jamie that we couldn't last. We were probably the ideal
couple, but I needed time to adjust. Once I truly accepted this new life and
felt the realness that it was most likely permanent, then maybe I could go
back to him, but so many things had to be understood before that could be the
case. Only the future will tell.
I have adjusted fairly well in the last few months to this switch. I'm
cute when I dress up and I know it, but I don't think I'm arrogant. There are
prettier girls than me, but I never would have said that of this body before.
It's all in a person's perspective. Even though I have the body of the girl that
I put on a pedestal because of her looks, I feel like "the girl next door." I
enjoy cheerleading and finally caught on to some of the cheers and chants--
complete with motions--with reasonable confidence. People are trying to get
Jamie and I together again. There may be hope, but I'm not going to let on
too heavily so as not to get his hopes up. I have come to grips with this body
and it now feels normal to me and not something that requires great
adjustment, but I cannot help but wonder what has happened to the souls of
the Jamie from my dimension and the Karen from this dimension. I find
myself hoping that Karen has my body, which would make her appealing to
me--a soul so close to mine, with knowledge of both genders and still being
the opposite sex to my own. Yet I can't help but think that Karen is in the
female Jamie's body which is the clone of her old female body. That would
leave the mean, cruel female Jamie in my male body. And I can't help but
snicker at the thought of that. I guess it might be justice, if it is I can certainly
accept this as a new "forever."
