I hate this drive. You'd think they'd make the trip from home to school
more exciting so that there's some good reason to leave the house. The
high school where I teach isn't in a very exciting part of the city. The
school's nice though. However, the fact that I'm there to work seems to
detract from its beauty. It must be nice for the students though.
I drive into my usually parking spot and collect together my stuff. As I
walk to my class room I find myself watching the students. When they
arrive in the morning, they go and get together with their friends and they
sit and talk about the weekend or last night's party or who John Smith is
screwing around with. Me, I don't get anything like that. A few people
pass me on the way in and say "Good morning Mr Light". Occasionally
another teacher might say something more genial like "Morning Joe". It
seems like the teachers are more associates than friends.
I go into my class room and find the usual mess I leave there each night.
There's a pile of unmarked papers on the desk, I better get round to doing
those in my first period. I haven't got a class first. I sit down and wait for
the inevitable moment.
Somewhere in the distance, a bell shrills.
I hate that bell, I think no matter what I did, I could never escape its awful
sound. It will haunt me until the day I die.
I can hear students milling around in the corridor. Occasionally one might
stick his or her head round my door and ask if the papers have been
marked yet. I assure them that they will be ready by today's music lesson.
Eventually silence falls upon the empty halls.
I take a moment to clean my glasses and then turn over the first paper.
"Morning Joe, what are you doing?" the sound comes from the door and
makes me jump a mile high. The voice is beautiful though and I recognise
the person straight away.
I look up and find Miss Carla Delaney, the physical education teacher,
standing, in all her glory, at my door. She always seems to look beautiful
even after a long class. I often wonder how she does it.
"Oh, nothing just marking a few old papers."
"Could you spare a few minutes, I need some help moving something."
I look down at the first paper, still unblemished by my marking pen,
sitting on the desk in front of me. I'll just have to tell her that I'm busy
and that she better find someone else.
"Sure, I'll be there in a minute."
"Thanks!" she smiles and heads back to the gym.
I curse quietly to myself, replace the paper on the pile and get up to follow
her.
I never really go to the gym. It's a huge room filled with all sorts of sports
equipment. I give her hand moving some gear around and then take a
moment to sit and collect my breath.
"You look exhausted." Gee, I wonder how she noticed that.
"Yeah, I'm not in the shape I used to be."
"What's the matter Joe, you seem down."
"I don't know Carla, well maybe I do. They tell us when we're young that
school days are the best days of our lives. Then when we get old we tell
our kids the same thing. I only just realised it's true. I watch the kids at
this school, they have circles of friends, parties, they change boyfriends
and girlfriends at will. I miss all that. I don't know what I'd give to go
back to school."
"What if you didn't have to give anything, what if I could send you back
to school right now?"
"That would be wonderful. Hold on, Carla, what are you saying?"
She smiled at me again. "I'm just saying that if that's what you truly want
then I can organise it. Though, you couldn't go back as yourself."
"How could you do all this?"
Once again, a subtle smile. "I've dabbled a bit, I know a few weird
things. Ok here's the rules: you will be a student at this school, in this
year, you will be an orphan who was adopted by me, making me your
effective parent, the rest is up to you. Who do you want to be?"
For the first time I considered her proposition seriously. I could think of
worse mothers. "I used to really like sports, how about a person involved
with school sports. Football I think this time." I used to play baseball but
if I'm going to change I may as well change a lot.
"Are you sure this is what you want?" She had a cold seriousness in her
voice.
"Yeah."
All of a sudden I blacked out.
I came round. I was feeling really strange. Slowly I opened my eyes. She
was looking down at me smiling. I must have been laying on the gym
floor. I slowly sat up and got one hell of a shock.
Looking down I saw that I was wearing a pink sweater and a denim skirt.
Beside me on the floor was a folder with some notes hanging free and a
small school bag. I also had, to my astonishment, breasts! I examined my
body. I was a young girl, maybe about 5'6". I looked across at the wall
length mirror used for dancing. I guess I looked "cute". I had long red
hair and a petite body.
Carla sat down beside me and began doing my hair.
"Are you happy with your new body?"
"Carla, this isn't really what I expected."
"Don't call me Carla here. You can call me Miss Delaney her and mom at
home. I always wanted a daughter."
"Who am I?"
She finished doing my hair and looked at us both in the mirror. "You are
Jodie Delaney, my adopted daughter. You are what you asked for. Now
you better start getting ready, you have PE next and I don't like people to
be late, not even my own daughter."
"This isn't what I asked for, I wanted to be on a football team!"
"You said you wanted to be involved with school sport, and you are. You
have cheerleader practice after school and you've got the big game on
Saturday."
I looked carefully at my reflection. This couldn't be so bad, I guess I'll
give it a go. I hope my replacement has fun with those papers. I stand up
and help Carla. I give my new mother a hug.
Somewhere in the distance, a bell shrills.
